One of the iconic battles of the Civil War is Shiloh. Grant had seen nothing but success since he began his campaign at the beginning of the year. That run would come to an abrupt halt at Shiloh in April of 1862. Desperate to stop Grant, Albert Sidney Johnston was able to assemble an army and attacked. While the Confederates were able to gain an edge over Grant with a surprise attack, Union troops doggedly defended their ground. As the battle dragged on, Johnston was killed and command passed to PGT Beauregard who put a halt to operations. The next day, reinforced, Grant pushed Beauregard back. While Grant was stung by criticism, and demoted, he learned from his mistakes and showed what he was made of sterner stuff. Take a listen! I’ve got an exciting episode planned for you today. This episode will focus solely on listener questions but as an added twist I’ve asked my friend Grant Bledsoe over at Grow Money Business Podcast to join me in answering these questions. I think you’ll benefit from Grant’s expertise as a Registered Investment Advisor and enjoy hearing his perspective as he helps me answer your questions. Listen in to hear our two points of view about rebalancing in difficult markets, quarterly tax payments, and choosing between a lump sum or monthly payments. Outline of This Episode [1:22] How to rebalance your portfolio when dealing with difficult markets [7:00] What is the classification of REITs? [15:30] After a Roth conversion should you send in quarterly tax payments? [17:55] A $200,000 lump sum or $1500 a month payments for life? How to rebalance your portfolio when dealing with difficult markets With all of the market turmoil over the past few months, many of us are left scratching our heads when the time comes to rebalance. How are we supposed to rebalance when the stock market is so volatile? Grant sees 2 sides to this thought equation. One side contains the math and the other part has the psychology. The math side will tell you that you are better off investing all your cash at once. But, psychologically, not many of us are prepared to jump all in today’s turbulent market. Grant suggests waiting or using the dollar cost average to divide up the cash over the next year or two. He stresses that you should choose a reasonable method and stick with it. Consistency is key, especially in times of uncertainty. Listen in to hear my response to this timely question. How should REITs be classified? Do you have REITs in your portfolio? One listener wonders whether they should be classified as a stock or a bond. While Grant thinks they act more like a stock, I tend to put them in the same category as bonds, but really, they are neither. Most REIT funds will invest in big commercial real estate, such as hospitals and shopping malls. They behave in their own way since the returns are driven by rents, interest rates, and appreciation. Having REITs in your ‘other’ category is one way to diversify your portfolio. Discover the risks of owning REITs as well as the difference between traded and non traded REITs on this episode of Retirement Starts Today. Should you send in quarterly tax payments when doing a Roth conversion early in the year? One listener asks if you do a Roth conversion early in the year should you be making quarterly tax payments to the IRS? This is a great question to ask your tax professional. If you do your own taxes then the IRS website is the resource to help you with the logistics. Basically, if you have 90-100% of the payments prepaid you won’t incur a penalty. This is why it is important to understand what your tax burden will be. A $200,000 lump sum or $1500 a month payments for life? To people that love math problems, deciding whether to take a lump-sum or monthly payments may seem as easy as plugging in the numbers. But there are more factors to consider beyond the math. You should examine what your retirement plan looks like. Will you be receiving Social Security payments? Think about your risk tolerance and your longevity as well. Grant helps me answer this common listener question, find out his take on it by pressing play. Jim Grant of Grant's Interest Rate Observer has more than three decades of experience monitoring macroeconomic metrics, and he is aghast at the post-Great Recession era. We are in uncharted waters, in terms of low and negative interest rates and seemingly worldwide and unprecedented currency devaluation. While Grant is reluctant to offer timing for the next correction, in what he calls the "default cycle," he believes the US economy is already overdue. He also fears the next correction could be even more severe and long lasting than the previous one. Show notes: https://goldnewsletter.com/podcast/jim-grant-the-calm-before-storm-defaults-ahead/

Homesteady - Stories of homesteading farming hunting and fishing
"Close your eyes. I want you to imagine your dream farm...What do you see?" In this episode of Homesteady, Aust talks to two individuals in different stages of their journeys to the ultimate destination: The Dream Farm. You-yes, YOU! can go from owning nothing, to finding stepping stones towards the perfect spot for reaching your own homesteading goals. Stepping Stone 1: A Mission for what type of Property YOU want. The Proving Grounds is one example of stepping stones leading to a dream property come true. Grant Woods, a wildlife biologist who lives in 2000 acres in the Ozark Mountains in Missouri, documents and teachers others successful land management techniques through his web series and website, GrowingDeer.tv. Grant's "mission" was to manage his land for the optimal growth of both plants and animals, while enabling him to spend more time with his family. Grant's land is called "The Proving Grounds" because with it, he has proven that his land management techniques lead to successful, bountiful results. Stepping Stone 2: Don't wait! Start now. Practice. "If ever a person has looked at their life as a series of stepping stones laid out in front of them on the way to that big 'ol lake full of bass, that's Alexia." Not everyone owns 2000 acres of land. In his interview with Alexia Johnstone, The Suburban Escapee, Alexia talks about taking one small step at a time. A self-proclaimed "anxious achiever," Alexia urges the burgeoning homesteader to set a series of small goals, each with a result that is rewarding. Achievable goals allow us to build towards bigger goals by feeding our self-confidence with small successes. Wherever you live, whatever your life right now, PRACTICE the skills that will lead you towards your homesteading goals. Stepping Stone 3: The Property Search. Grant, Alexia and Aust all reflect on how jumping for the first piece of land they saw, or right to a giant farm, wasn't the right choice for their families, due to location, cost, or size. While Grant is already there, Aust and Alexia are both in different spots on their journeys to their Dream Property. After listening to this episode, are you motivated to learn more about land management, sustainability, and achievable goals on your way to owning your own Dream Property? Also, share the show with #iamhomesteady to win a subscription to Grow Journey! From the Suburban Escapee Hey everyone! It was lots of fun to be part of the podcast this month. I am so excited to have the opportunity to share the journey my family and I have embarked on to be more Homesteady. Want to amaze your friends with homemade tomato sauce? Here is the recipe, as promised. Nonna's Basic Tomato Sauce Ingredients: 2- 28 oz cans of crushed tomatoes 1-2 fresh tomatoes, if you can find good ones. Otherwise, leave them out. 2 cloves of garlic 1/2 small onion 1/4 cup olive oil (enough to cover the bottom of a soup pot) 1 tablespoon of Italian Seasoning Blend, OR 1/4 Tablespoon dried oregano 3/4 Tablespoon dried basil Garlic Salt or Garlic Powder, to taste Salt and Pepper to taste A soup pot or dutch oven To Make: If using, chop the 1-2 fresh tomatoes and blend them in the blender. Put aside. Coat the bottom of a soup pot or dutch oven with olive oil. Turn the heat to low to slowly warm up the oil. While the oil is warming up, chop the onion into thin strips and throw them in. Cook 2-5 minutes, until translucent, but not brown. Peel the two cloves of garlic and put them in whole. Let cook about a minute with the onions, and then pour in the two cans of tomatoes, and the blended fresh tomatoes, if using, and stir. Sprinkle in the herbs. Stir again. Taste the sauce and add salt and pepper to please your own palate. If the sauce seems overly acidic, garlic salt or garlic powder can take the edge off. If you use garlic salt, be aware that you probably won't need much regular salt. Add small amounts at a time- you can always add more, but you can't take it out! Partially cover and let simmer on low for 20 minutes. Stir every 3-5 minutes to prevent a burnt spot on the bottom. Then the sauce is done, it should nicely coat the back of a spoon. This makes enough sauce for 6-8 servings of pasta. Notes: If you are an experienced cook, feel free to vary the herbs. Rosemary, parsley, and thyme also are nice in this sauce. Fresh herbs work well too. If you use plain stewed frozen garden tomatoes or home-canned tomatoes, blend the tomatoes before pouring them into the sauce. I have found that you need to lengthen the cooking time due to the extra water compared to commercially processed tomatoes. This is particularly true for frozen stewed tomatoes. Mangia!
