Australia has been blessed with some of the greatest songwriters of all time. On their Mount Rushmore has to be Robert Forster and Grant McLennan of the Go-Betweens. What started out as spikey post-punk, eventually morphed into some of the most lush and perfect pop music ever made. If you don't believe me, listen to 1988's immaculate 16 Lovers Lane for proof. Not feeling they'd gained a big enough audience, the guys parted ways for a while until reforming in 2000 and keeping it going until Grant's death in 2006. Robert's solo work is also excellent and he's releasing a great new album, Strawberries, this week. We discuss how he writes such amazing story songs, his influences, the uniqoe story behind the new album and a ton more. He's one of the best there's ever been and we're lucky to have him.  www.robertforster.net www.patreon.com/c/thehustlepod

Refusing to wear headphones in the softest way imaginable, Robert Forster of The Go-Betweens' fame joins Björn and Sarah on the evening before his departure from Sweden after a month-long recording session. He takes us back in time to the recording industry of the 80s, explains how he taught Grant McLennan to play bass with zero musical training, and what it's like to be both a musician – and a music critic! Oh, and let's us in on the gig he played at the inauguration of the Go Between bridge in his hometown, while disclosing his favorite studio in the world as….

There was a time where Australian bands felt that the only way they were going to get noticed was to leave the country and head to London. Sometimes, this would translate to great popularity ...and sometimes, it meant bands would live under difficult financial circumstances while their music was not in danger of bothering the top 40. Welcome to episode 163 of Love That Album. I'm joined by previous guest Doug (aka Fnord) Buissuant and first timer, Darrin Irvine to talk about The Go Betweens and their 1988 album 16 Lovers Lane. Of course, we talk about the journey the band took from their origins in Brisbane through to living in London, and finally relocating to Sydney before calling it a day (well...sorta). The music evolved from clever indie pop in the early 80s to lush, beautifully arranged pop in the late 80s. We talk about how we saw the music evolve, being a Brisbane band under the police state of Joh Bjelke-Petersen, the friendship of Grant Mclennan and Robert Forster (and what that supposedly made the rest of the band feel)....and unlike some other discussions about the Go Betweens, we DON'T talk about Fleetwood Mac. 16 Lovers Lane can be divisive among fans – some prefer the earlier albums that were more angular sounding, and others love the beauty of their final album in their original incarnation. Where do we stand? Tune in. I am hugely grateful to the gents for taking the time to bring me their expertise and conversation about one of Australia's great bands that deserved more recognition from the wider public than they received. Also, thanks go to my friend, Pat Monaghan for the loan of his box set G Is For Go Betweens and for his conversations with me about the band (and about a ton of other music). Sorry it's been a while. Delighted to have Robert Forster as my guest this episode. Robert Forster is an Australian singer-songwriter, raised in Brisbane, where he currently resides. He's perhaps best known as one of the co-founders and leaders of indie-rock royalty The Go-betweens. The Go-betweens were formed in 1977 and had an initial run that lasted until 1989, before a reunion run from 2000 until 2006 when co frontman Grant McLennan died of a heart attack aged just 48. As well as a run of solo albums, Robert also ventured into musical journalism writing for Australian magazine The Monthly and sister publication The Saturday Paper. Some of his writings were collated together in the book The 10 Rules of Rock n Roll. On February 3rd 2023 Robert releases his 8th studio album The Candle and the Flame. The album was created during an incredibly difficult time for Robert and his family. His wife Karin, who plays violin on Robert's albums, had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and playing music in the evenings along with their son Louis was a much needed escape from the ravages of chemotherapy. You would imagine from looking at some of the lyrics, that this situation influenced Robert's songwriting on this album, but remarkably, just one song, She's A Fighter, was writing after Karin's diagnosis. Robert was fantastic company and had a lot to say. I really hope you enjoy our conversation. Insta: @sendingsignalspodcastTwitter: @signalspodcast

"Tender Years" The Brisbane-born Robert Forster is perhaps best known as a founding member of the legendary band The Go-Betweens. How legendary are they? Well, let's just say this: There's a bridge in Brisbane called The Go-Between Bridge. I was going to say they were one of the most critically-acclaimed bands of the last 40 years, but that falls short of the mark— they're one of the most critically acclaimed bands ever. Their nearly ten-album discography is a rare one in that every entry is a classic. The band ceased to be after the death of Grant McLennan, but Forster has pressed on with a winning solo career that got started back in 1990 and has yielded a classics like Danger In The Past, I Had A New York Girlfriend and his new one The Candle And The Flame. The Candle And The Flame is astonishing work. Recorded after the news that his wife and musical partner Karen was diagnosed with Ovarian cancer, Forster's normally meticulous process was put aside and he and his family—his son Lewis and his daughter Loretta and his wife Karen sat down and, unsure of the future, recorded the nine songs on the record with urgency and heart. The Candle And The Flame is a spellbinding listen. It's filled with the wondrous poetic precision that Forster is known for, but it also showcases a raw and dynamic feel that make every song brim with and sonorous grace It's truly wondrous work—an artistic and personal achievement that shows the power of art, the power of family and the power of hope. www.robertforster.net www.bombshellradio.com Stereo Embers: Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

“Swinging On The Moon” Steve Kilbey can swing from anywhere he wants in the universe; the moon, the stars, whichever planet he chooses. And yes, of course, he can also swing from the milky way. Because the fact of the matter is that Steve Kilbey is a musician whose talents are not only downright otherworldly, they're positively celestial. A poet, a painter, a singer, a writer, a partner and a dad, Kilbey is not only one of the most fascinating musicians to ever walk around on this planet, he's also one of the most productive. In addition to the 25 albums he's recorded with the Church, he's got almost twenty solo albums under his belt, along with numerous side projects with members of Game Theory, The Go-Betweens, All India Radio and Remy Zero. Kilbey's new double album The Hall of Counterfeits is a straight up stunner that's as raw as it is ravishing. In this chat he talks to Alex about the pressures of recording for a major label, why he's writing songs on acoustic guitar now and how heroin addiction ended up being a chapter in his life rather than a book. He also talks about his friendship with Grant McLennan, his penchant for being competitive and his favorite album by The Triffids…. https://waterfrontrecords.mywaterfrontstore.com/Product/94653/1?ffm=FFM_21f04e523dca1e9055cf4b6e20f53a16 https://ffm.to/thehallofcounterfeits www.thetimebeing.com www.thechurchband.net www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Find Alex on Twitter: @emberseditor And Instragram: @emberspodcast EMAIL: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Rockhistorier

’Rockhistorier’ starter denne gang i Australien. People Say” (1979)“Your Turn, My Turn” (1981)“Hammer the Hammer” (1982)”Cattle and Cane” (1983)“Part Company” (1984)“River of Money”” (1983)“Bachelor Kisses”, (1984)”Draining the Pool for You” (1984) “Spring Rain” (1986)“The Wrong Road” (1986)“The Clarke Sisters” (1987) “Bye Bye Pride” (1987)“Streets of Your Town” (1988)“Dive for Your Memory” (1988)“Rock and Roll Friend” (1988)“Going Blind” (2000)“Caroline and I” (2003)”Darlinghurst Nights” (2005)

Robert Forster: Live at The Old Museum, Bowen Hills, 20 July 2019 Robert Forster will be instantly recognisable to generations of music fans as co-founder of legendary Brisbane band The Go-Betweens. Throughout the late '70s through the 1980s, Forster and his songwriting partner Grant McLennan released a string of beloved albums, including the post-punk classic "Before Hollywood" and the perfect pop masterpiece "16 Lovers Lane". Though they went through several lineup changes, violinist Amanda Brown, bassist Robert Vickers and drummer Lindy Morrison are most closely associated with this period of the band. Following the dissolution of The Go-Betweens in 1989, Forster embarked on a steady run of solo albums, beginning with "Danger In The Past" in 1990. His solo career was put on hold when he and McLennan reformed The Go-Betweens with a new lineup at the turn of the century, now including Adele Pickvance on bass and Glenn Thompson on drums. This incarnation released three studio albums together, capped off by "Oceans Apart" in 2005, which won that year's ARIA Award for Best Adult Contemporary Album. Grant McLennan passed away in 2006 and in 2009 the band's legacy was honoured by the city of Brisbane when the Hale Street Bridge was renamed The Go Between Bridge following a popular vote. Since McLennan's passing, Forster has released a further three solo albums and had two books published. The first book, "The 10 Rules of Rock and Roll", was a collection of his music writings while the second, "Grant & I" was an autobiography. The band was co-founded and led by singer-songwriters and guitarists Robert Forster and Grant McLennan, who were its only constant members throughout its existence. Drummer Lindy Morrison joined the band in 1980, and its lineup would later expand to include bass guitarist Robert Vickers and multi-instrumentalist Amanda Brown. Vickers was replaced by John Willsteed in 1987, and the quintet lineup remained in place until the band split two years later. Forster and McLennan reformed the band in 2000 with a new lineup that did not include any previous personnel aside from them. McLennan died on 6 May 2006 of a heart attack and The Go-Betweens disbanded again. In 2010, a toll bridge in their native Brisbane was renamed the Go Between Bridge after them. In 1988, "Streets of Your Town", the first single from 16 Lovers Lane, entered the Top 100 on both the Kent Music Report chart in Australia and the UK Singles Chart in the United Kingdom. The follow-up single "Was There Anything I Could Do?" was a No. 16 hit on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart in the United States. In May 2001, "Cattle and Cane", from 1983's Before Hollywood, was selected by Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA) as one of the Top 30 Australian songs of all time. Requin: Requin are a three piece band from Brisbane that are playing an incredibly intricate math rock blend. Their harmonies will lull you perhaps into a false sense of security, but often bring you to a wholesome feeling of beauty amongst brutal time changes which always keep you guessing. They are comprised of Fionn Richards, Keeley Young and James Eyre Walker on a variety of instruments from keys, saxophone, bass pedals, guitars and drums. They released two singles, ‘Return to Sender’ in 2017 and ‘Blood, Sweat and Bees’ in 2018, all leading up towards an EP released in October of 2018 called ‘The Noisy Miners Swoop Him’. It was a 5 track beautiful recording which highlighted the complexities of their music and their direction which truly sounds unique. On stage they consistently blow people away and you can physically see the buzz around them grow as the crowds get bigger, as do the venues. One thing that no one can deny is that seeing Requin on stage is seeing three friends who truly love playing music together; their joy is palpable and one that spills out into the audience. Recorded Live at the Our Sound Festival on the 6th of April 2019. McKisko: McKisko, is an artist that really is hard to compare to. Her music is just that combination of sounds and energy that makes you existentially wander into a deep place of thought and end up with pure peace with the world because music exists. She has released three albums in her time, starting with ‘Glorio’ in 2009. She then won the Grant McLennan fellowship and moved to Berlin, which eventually formed the basis for her cult favourite album ‘Eximo’ in 2013. In 2019, we were lucky enough to receive another album called ‘Southerly’ released in February. ‘Southerly’ is an amazing body of work which showcases her incredible talent with an album that has such depth and you can feel the space and patience of the record. It was recorded in Point Lonsdale, a beautiful sea side town, and you can hear how the album ebbs and flows going in and out with the tide. This night we got to hear a few tracks from ‘Southerly’ and she was accompanied by a guitarist and a violin which was truly incredible. It felt like a collective moment for the audience that we were lucky enough to be a part of, and now so can you. Recorded live at Our Sound Festival at the Foundry.

Halfway: Halfway originally formed in 2000 shortly after John Busby, Chris Dale and Elwin Hawton moved from Rockhampton to Brisbane and met bassist Ben Johnson. Later, they added brothers Noel and Liam Fitzparick and by 2008 the group had released 2 records and picked up the Grant McLennan prize for song-writing. Recently, they’ve added ex-Go-Between John Willsteed and Luke Peacock to to bring that headcount up to 8. In February 2014 they released their latest record, Any Old Love, which received high praise from Mess + Noise, The Courier Mail and the Sydney Morning Herald. Recorded & mixed by John Robinson. Recorded at Big Sound 2012 Adele & Glenn: Adele Pickvance and Glenn Thompson were the rhythm section for the Go-Betweens during the ‘re-formation years’ between 2000 and 2006. In 2011 they got back together to play each other’s songs and released their first album ‘Carrington Street’ in 2012. They received some very nice reviews for their humble indie-folk record. Recorded & mixed by John Robinson Recorded at Big Sound 2012 Deadshred: Formed in Brisbane 2013, Deadshred finds members of Slug Guts, Per Purpose, Feathers and Thigh Master getting together to make noisey post-punk. In October of this year they’ll be releasing a debut cassette on Tenth Court Records. The tape is called ‘Thousand Yard Staring Competition’ and if lead single ‘Ratsakk’ is anything to go by then it’s going to rock harder than a belch in the ear. Recorded by Branko Cosic. Mixed by Josh Watson. Recorded at The Haunt, Brisbane. 4th July 2014. NUN: In April Nun’s self-titled debut album was co-released by Aarght! and Avant Records. Shadowy, brooding and drawing from a history of occultism in Victoria, the record follows on in the same vein as their first 7” released in 2012 on Nihilistic Orbs, the label for all things Dark, electronic and Australian. Engineered by Jack Farley. Produced by Grace K. Originally aired on ‘Straight to You’ for PBS 106.7FM. 7th January 2013. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 8-9pm, Friday 12 September 2014. Show production and engineering: Josh Watson.

Cannon: Cannon are one of Brisbane’s quiet achievers but you wouldn’t know it if you saw one of their shows. Yes, they’re loud, they’re messy and sweaty and look so effortless doing it all too because they do this almost every weekend. They released their debut album in 2011 and followed it up with a 7” single last year on Bon Voyage records, a Brizzy label that brought you the Feathers LP and later the debut 7” of Martyr privates. But it’s their dynamic unpretentious live presence that sets them apart from your everyday garage rock band. That and their songs are damn catchy too. Recorded & mixed by Josh Watson. Recorded at The Underdog, Mar 22 2014. Dag: The name Dag conjures up images of 20th century Australiana, a not so distant past but an endearing one at that. Dag main man, Dusty, channels his inner Grant McLennan and wears the Go-Betweens influence on his sleeve. I wouldn’t go as far as to call it dolewave (the unfortunate title for a new wave of Australian jangle-pop) and it’s more similar to Scott & Charlene’s Wedding’s sombre first record rather than the almost lackadaisical nature of a group like Bitch Prefect. Recorded & mixed by Luke Walsh. Recorded at Guilt Retreat 8, Nov 16 2013. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 8-9pm, Friday 18 April 2014. Show production and engineering: Josh Watson.
