Historian Kate Fullagar tells the story of the intertwined destinies of Governor Phillip and First Nations leader Bennelong, beginning with their deaths and spooling gradually back to their first encounter.   This bold, unconventional approach allows for a wider lens and different perspective on their respective personalities and achievements, and on the events which brought them together at a time when Britain's colonial ambitions were to shape Australia for the next century.   Understanding, misunderstanding, conflict and a remarkable journey together to Britain give this double-headed biography a compelling and sometimes poignant narrative.   Life Sentences is produced by David Roach for Two Heads Media and edited by Kirra Jordan for PipeWolf Media. Old Millennials Remember Movies

Don't hate her because she's beautiful. Hate her because she's the smartest person in the room. While the marketing for “Legally Blonde” suggested a movie about a ‘dumb blonde squaring off against academia,' it's clear from the onset that Reese Witherspoon's Elle Woods is more than equipped to handle Harvard Law School and the spoiled rich kids who think wearing pink is a crime. The box office success of “Legally Blonde” propelled Witherspoon to the A-List (culminating in an Oscar win in 2005 for “Walk the Line.”) It's also a pretty unusual movie with each of the three acts working in their own distinct genre. Act I is a rom-com setup with Elle trying to win back her superficial college boyfriend. Act II is a “college” movie where Elle struggles to connect with the other Harvard snobs. And Act III is set in the courtroom (never mind that Elle has only completed, maybe, a single semester of law school). Luckily, it's all pleasantly comedic! Even after more than 20 years! Also, look! Sexism and toxic masculinity lives on forever! Old Millennials hosts Angela and Tyler examine the legacy of “Legally Blonde,” including how the movie drastically changes the tone of its source material (the book by Amanda Brown) and whether the great Jennifer Coolidge rescues the notorious “Bend and Snap” sequence. Also, one of the co-hosts is currently enrolled in law school! What's realistic about the depiction? Why did Harvard agree to let their school seem… well… less than stellar? How the hell does anyone manage a near-perfect score on their LSAT exam? Seriously, that test is hard! It's all here in the latest episode of Old Millennials Remember Movies, including a segment where Tyler tries to remember what he learned in Criminal Law (it goes poorly). Also, inexplicably, Tyler considers himself to be the “Elle Woods of his law school.” Good luck getting the Bar to consider your admission, Bud! Also discussed in this episode: Dune Part 2 (2024) (Dune Part 1 discussed in episode 115) Love Lies Bleeding (2024) Ricky Stanicky (2024) Damsel (2024) Spaceman (2024) True Detective: Night Country (2024 limited series) Loudermilk (Netflix) Star Trek: Prodigy (Netflix)

“You got into Harvard Law? What, like it's hard?” We're talking about 2000s comedy classic Legally Blonde with our friend Wolfgang La Vie, and whoever said orange is the new pink is seriously disturbed. This role sealed the deal, making Reese Witherspoon the titan of the industry she still is today. Reese's Elle Woods is a true feminist icon, and this movie holds up some twenty years after its release. We discuss the evolution of Amanda Brown's novel turned script. Going from a raunchy college comedy in the vein of American Pie, to a story of female empowerment, Legally Blonde was on to something making the “dumb blonde” the smartest person in the room. This cast is incredible. We get America's cute boyfriend from the early 2000s Luke Wilson, Selma Blair's anti-Elle Woods, and the dynamic duo Alanna Ubach and Jessica Cauffiel as the hilarious best friends. Jennifer Coolidge makes a truly iconic appearance as Elle's nail tech bestie Paulette. “So what's this Vivian got that you don't... Three Tits?” still sends us. Elle taught us many important life lessons as young gays. Always believe in yourself, workplace harassment is never okay, and everyone should know the golden rules of haircare are simple and finite.”  Thanks for listening and don't forget to subscribe, rate and review us on Apple Podcasts! www.patreon.com/moviesthatmadeusgay Facebook/Instagram: @moviesthatmadeusgay Twitter: @MTMUGPod Scott Youngbauer: Twitter @oscarscott / Instagram @scottyoungballer Peter Lozano: Twitter/Instagram @peterlasagna

Pioneers and Pathfinders

As we've discussed many times on the podcast, the access to justice gap is a particularly complex challenge to address, due to its links to systemic issues such as poverty and limited availability to legal resources and technology. Today's guest, however, is helping people overcome these broader obstacles to legal services. Amanda Brown is the founder and executive director of Lagniappe Law Lab. The organization's mission is to facilitate access to justice at scale for Louisiana's underprivileged populations through the use of technology, human-centered design, and operations principles. Upon graduating law school, Amanda was a disaster recovery attorney, using technology to assist victims of disasters with accessing public benefits and title clearing. She then worked as a Microsoft NextGen Fellow for the American Bar Association's Center for Innovation, helping support the design and development of the Legal Services Corporation's legal navigator program, which connects those in need with legal resources available to them. She went on to serve as a legal technology consultant for the Louisiana Bar Foundation on its statewide triage portal. Drawing on these experiences in legal tech and the A2J space, Amanda founded Lagniappe Law Lab in 2019. She is also co-chair of Louisiana's Access to Justice Commission's technology subcommittee, and she is a member of the Legal Services Corporation's Emerging Leaders Council. Today, Amanda tells us about Lagniappe Law Lab—and how the team is incorporating human-centered design in its work, the unique challenges that the Lab's clients face in Louisiana, and how she entered the A2J path.

Shannon, a superfan of the film, knew it was actually based on a novel, though the story of that novel's publication is a bit of a twisty one. And while Amanda Brown's book lays out the basic plot and character arcs that we all know and love from the film, the tone of the novel is a lot less cheerful and winning. Fundamentally, women believe that their lives should be safe, their bodies should be respected, their work should be valued, their families should be supported, and that the government should represent them. Relational organizing is surprisingly powerful. One simple conversation could be a game changer. Supermajority's work is to bring more people along in this exercise of radical imagination for true representation of these values. Partnership is built off of really leaning into each other's strengths.Amanda shares how that while COVID and lockdowns have forced Flatirons to get creative about how they cultivate relationships with missions partners, they've realized they can't sit back and become dependent on ZOOM meetings and virtual missions trips. It's time they start thinking about how to get face to face with their missions partners again, because you can't replace the power of that type of connection. And finally, when Flatiron's chooses a missions partner, they do so based on shared values and passions, and then commit to long term relationship with them. Doing this makes it easier to extend grace to each other when things get hard or don't work out as smoothly as they'd hoped. Relationships require commitment, so choosing the right partner in the first place is critical.Learn more about Flatirons Community ChurchLearn more about OneChild HERE!

We're diving into Blonde territory this week with another weak book/strong film discussion. First up is Brown's self-published novel, which...isn't great (Elle is unlikeable? She fails to see through Warner's BS til the end? None of the supporting characters matter?)Perhaps we're just blinded by the super fun film adaptation, which rectifies a lot of the storytelling missteps and also stars Witherspoon at her most winsome. Throw in a great cast (Blair! Coolidge! Garber!), a smart script that emphasizes female solidarity and believing in yourself (courtesy of Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith, the writer[s] of former episodes 'Ella Enchanted' and 'Trinkets') and you've got yourself a winner that (mostly) holds up.Wanna connect with the show?
