While Max partied hard in Japan and Dan ventured down rockstar pathways, Sam was lucky enough to chat to the very talented Tory Robertson (Harbours, Passerby). On this episode we spoke about all things mental health, stigmatism around men’s health and adjusting to change. We also touched on the Sandtunes cancellation and what that means for music and whether or not triple j fans are legit or not.

I first came across the music of Max Stalling around the year 2000.  I believe it was my older brother, Kade, who shared a copy of Max’s 1997 record, “Comfort in the Curves”, with me.  By now, listeners of the podcast probably know how much I “geek out” on great songs and quality songwriting.  So, when I started listening to Max’s music, I couldn’t keep the grin from creeping across my face.  I often had those: “Damn…I wish I’d thought of that line” moments. Without writing “over your head”, Max is still able to weave more graduate-level lyrics and concepts into his music than a lot of writers I listen to, which is part of the reason I dig him so much.  Through our conversation in this episode it’s easy to understand why, as he explains that when he was a child, he would actually just thumb through the dictionary to find new words he didn’t know.  Then, there’s the fact that prior to his career as a singer and songwriter, he worked as a research scientist developing new food products for Frito-Lay.  We actually got to visit a little about that part of his career too in this episode.  I find that kind of stuff fascinating so I’m glad Max was cool with sharing. Max talks about his start in the music business which was suggested to him by several other songwriters and musicians he had befriended; specifically, Mark David Manders who Max is still close to.  Max also has the good fortune of traveling and performing with his wife Heather, who plays fiddle along-side him.  We visit a bit about Heather’s career as a fiddle player as well. She started playing at the age of 3 and her ability allowed her to eventually land gigs in Branson, MO with some of the biggest names in the business. While Max’s writing is unique, another thing that you’ll hear in Max’s music that is a bit uncommon is the use of a classical nylon-string guitar on most of his songs.  To me, that instrument just fits SO well with Max’s writing style and delivery. With his navigator chained up in the back scene, Max is back on the road, heading towards this rumored source of fuel. While Max is behind the wheel, Dog keeps an eye, and a shotgun, on the Gyro Captain. The pilot is wary of his four-legged captor’s temperament, but all three of them eventually arrive at the top of a ridge overlooking a compound beset on all sides by marauders.

While Max and Goose are going giddy over the Black on Black, Fifi and Labatouche are upstairs dropping exposition on us. We get rather shaken about the revelation that Max wants to quit the MFP, which was never mentioned before this minute, it's a topic so nice we discuss it twice! Trading journals are a part of the markets that can be very beneficial, especially to those people who are beginners in trading. Max (“Maximus” in the chat room) shares with us just how his trading journal has been preparing him to go live with real money. We discuss many other interesting topics too, but the part that really stuck out in my mind was how organized he is in tracking all his trades. Whether you’re a new trader or a veteran, I’m confident you can garner at least a few bits tips or tricks from our talk. Notes: Max’s introduction to the day trading the market was spurred by Clay’s 10k calorie challenge. This led Max to spark up a conversation with this resident advisor to which he found out that he was day trading the market in the morning before classes. While Max did the right thing by paper trading, he did not treat it seriously by any means. He treated it like a video game by not utilizing realistic figures that he would be using when he went live. Now that Max has gotten his feet wet trading speculative biotechs and technology companies along with countless hours of working on his craft, he now is involved in a co-op program though his school to trade full time for 6 months with advisors from JP Morgan and others in the finance industry. Max brings up a great point about how everyone trades differently and while his resident advisor trades successfully one way, it doesn’t particularly jive with him. There are many ways to make money in the market and everyone has to find what spot they fit best. Data is extremely important for Max. He strongly suggests that everyone use detailed journaling techniques to keep track of progress and spot potential trading issues that will impact long term profitability. There’s no argument or justifications to foolishness when you have the data logged and presented in front of you. Quotes: “I got some good information. While Max undergoes retraining at Manticore, Logan continues his quest to bring down the covert project that's risen from the ashes of the DNA lab fire. The two are reunited, but seem destined to remain apart, this time because of the retro-virus with which Max has become infected. At the end though, Manticore is brought to its knees again, and the name Sandman gives us pause regarding his role in the project.
