“Naturalistic stimuli open up new exploration…”Dr. Christopher Baldassano is an associate professor at Columbia University and leads the Dynamic Perception and Memory Lab. With a background in electrical engineering from Princeton and a PhD in computer science from Stanford, Chris has pioneered innovative approaches to understanding memory and cognition. Following a postdoc at Princeton with Uri Hasson and Ken Norman, he joined Columbia in 2018. His research focuses on how the brain processes, stores, and retrieves events using naturalistic stimuli, hidden Markov models, and multivariate analysis techniques. In this episode, Peter and Chris explore the fascinating world of event structures and memory. They discuss Chris's pioneering work on event scripts, neural frameworks that act as cognitive scaffolds for autobiographical memories. The conversation covers how the brain segments continuous experience into discrete events, the role of event boundaries in memory encoding, and the critical function of the hippocampus in organizing these temporal structures. Chris explains his use of naturalistic stimuli and hidden Markov models to reveal the subtle dynamics of how we combine recurring information to respond more efficiently to future experiences. Along the way, Chris shares valuable insights on the evolution of neuroscience research and offers thoughtful advice for aspiring scientists navigating the field. We hope you enjoy this episode!Chapters:00:00 - Introduction07:37 - Transitioning from Computer Science to Neuroscience13:01 - Exploring Naturalistic Stimuli in Neuroscience18:11 - Hidden Markov Models in Narrative Perception22:46 - Event Boundaries and Memory Encoding27:49 - The Role of the Hippocampus in Memory33:01 - Implications for Mental Health and Memory Disorders38:19 - Enhancing Memory Techniques41:11 - Contextualization in Memory46:19 - Understanding Brain States49:01 - AI and Contextual Knowledge53:29 - Infant Cognition and Event Structures01:01:31 - Future Directions in ResearchWorks mentioned:2:28 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPLWOBmaLkY(Baldassano talk at NIH workshop on naturalistic stimuli)14:42 - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28772125/(Baldassano et al., 2017 - Neuron - "Discovering Event Structure in Continuous Narrative Perception and Memory")15:02 - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30249790/(Baldassano et al., 2018 - Journal of Neuroscience - "Representation of Real-world Event Schemas During Narrative Perception")18:24 - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29087305/(Vidaurre, Smith & Woolrich, 2017 - PNAS - "Brain network dynamics are hierarchically organized in time" - using Markov models in a different way)19:41 - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17338600/(Zacks et al., 2007 - Psychological Bulletin - "Event perception: A mind-brain perspective" - foundational work on event boundary processes)27:04 - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27121839/(Huth et al., 2016 - Nature - "Natural speech reveals the semantic maps that tile human cerebral cortex" - semantic information stored throughout the brain)37:15 - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22982082/(LePort et al., 2012 - Neurobiology of Learning and Memory - Jim McGaugh's study on highly superior autobiographical memory)53:01 - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36252007/(Yates et al., 2022 - PNAS - "Neural event segmentation of continuous experience in human infants")Episode producers:Xuqian Michelle Li

Their conversation features insights from two distinguished guests: Mandy Huth, an enterprise security leader with over 20 years of experience, and Whitney Merrill, a privacy attorney with a strong background in computer science and legal frameworks around consumer protection. The discussion opens with an exploration of individual liability for cybersecurity leaders and broader business leadership within organizations. Whitney Merrill argues that regulators like the FTC and SEC are increasingly holding individuals accountable for security and privacy lapses. The conversation highlights notable cases where executives have faced scrutiny, emphasizing the growing expectation for tangible processes and proper security postures within organizations.Mandy Huth underscores the importance of shared responsibility and accountability within a business, noting that security decisions are not made in isolation. She advocates for a collaborative approach where security leaders outline risks comprehensively to allow for informed decision-making across the executive team. Huth also expresses concern over the proliferation of CYA (Cover Your Ass) practices that prioritize documentation over meaningful risk mitigation, warning that this can dilute the effectiveness of security programs.Another central theme in the episode centers on the need for standardized frameworks and a common language to articulate risk across an organization. Both guests highlight the need for clear, consistent communication of risks to build a unified understanding among all stakeholders, from the board to individual teams. Piacente and Merrill emphasize that while existing frameworks like NIST and ISO provide a foundation, there is an ongoing need to adapt these frameworks to align with industry-specific contexts and evolving regulatory expectations.A significant takeaway from the conversation is the role of systemic risk and the potential outsized impact of seemingly minor vulnerabilities. Huth and Merrill caution against underestimating these risks and advocate for continuous improvement and adaptation of security measures. They suggest that prioritizing business-friendly security practices can help foster greater adoption and collaboration across the enterprise. The episode concludes with reflections on the future landscape of cybersecurity regulation and practice. Whitney Merrill envisions a shift towards democratizing security, making it more accessible and achievable for small businesses through standardized, affordable solutions. Meanwhile, Huth calls for a balance between regulatory clarity and flexibility to ensure innovative small businesses can thrive without being stifled by onerous security requirements.Overall, the conversation provides valuable insights into the complexities of cybersecurity management, emphasizing the importance of collaboration, clear communication, and adaptability in navigating modern security challenges. These discussions are essential for any business leader or security professional looking to enhance their organization's resilience against cyber threats.____________________________Watch this and other videos on ITSPmagazine's YouTube ChannelRedefining CyberSecurity Podcast with Sean Martin, CISSP playlist:

During a recent music lull, podcasts dominated my morning commute until Pissed Jeans shook me awake with their new record! The song "Moving On" hit me like a lightning bolt – from the killer intro riff to those raw, punk vocals, it was pure magic. Their latest album "Half Divorced" reaffirmed my punk roots, reminding me why I fell in love with this genre in the first place. These guys aren't just a band; they're a rebellion against the mundane. Taking a break from adulting, they crank out music that's loud, unapologetic, and utterly captivating. Randall Huth brought their story to life on the podcast – trust me, it's a wild ride worth tuning into. If you haven't already, crank up "Half Divorced" and let Pissed Jeans transport you to a time when punk ruled and conformity was nowhere in sight. Don't miss out – this is punk rock at its finest!
