Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! It's Ani-May, the month where we indulge in animated films from Japan! Hey, did you see the one about the busty high school girls with the short skirts and gravity-defying, rainbow colored hair who save the world by piloting giant robots with the one male who's an insufferable loser but for some inexplicable reason his classmates, his homeroom teacher, his childhood friend, her mom, and his sister all want to jump his bones? And there's a talking cat? Yeah, I guess that doesn't narrow it down. I should have been more specific. Anyway, I mandated we watch something else. A Silent Voice, is a about a guy who bullies a girl in grade school but feels bad about it and attempts to make amends years later. Will she forgive him? Should she forgive him? Are there giant robots? 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 15:47 - A Silent Voice review 1:07:04 - Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. Take 145: A Silent Voice & Your Name- The Essential Anime Series.
The latest film from Kyoto Animation veteran Yamada Naoko – known for K-On!, A Silent Voice, and Tamako Market – arrived in American theaters courtesy GKids this weekend, and both Sean and Jonathan made trips to the theater to check it out. Now working with Science SARU, Yamada's voice is as singular as ever, and while The Colors Within returns to some familiar narrative territory for the director – high-school students forming a band – the way this story is told is singular. It's an aggressively low-key, gentle narrative about quiet but profound emotions, and it builds to a musical climax that is an absolute knockout – one we couldn't resist recording a podcast about. Enjoy! And please look forward to Season 5 of Japanimation Station, our ‘Grand Tour' of anime, which we are excited to announce will be premiering Sunday, March 16th, 2025! So… things may be a bit rough and not make sense, and the future may not be as bright as we'd all like it to, but we're going to keep doing what we do for all of you as well as all of us - if only to serve as a momentary distraction from the world around us. The fun and shenanigans will continue, even if the real world reminds us how cold it may be, but we're going to fight the good fight going forward, be it big or small. And so should all of you since we're all going to be in this together. Preferably on the platform of "bluer skies," too, hint hint. Tällä kertaa puhumme Japanin koulujärjestelmästä ja sen kuvaamisesta mangassa yhdessä vieraamme, Afureko-blogin Cillan kanssa, joka tuntee Suomen koulujärjestelmää. Ajankohtaisena aiheena puhumme espoolaisen Museo Leikin näyttelystä Tokiosta Tapiolaan, johon on koottu suomalaisen Japani-harrastamisen historiaa. Welcome back for Part 6 of our Kyoto Vacation, entitled ‘Yamada Naoko Strikes Back; or, I Have no Voice and I Must Sound! Euphonium.' And while most of this part will deal with the second half of that title, today's subject is all about the aforementioned Yamada Naoko, the Kyoto Animation wunderkind behind K-On! and Tamako Market, and the director of what might well be the best thing we've watched all season: The 2016 movie A Silent Voice – aka The Shape of Voice – based on the manga by Ōima Yoshitoki. Part 5 of our Kyoto Vacation, “Kyoto Animation's Splendid Isolation,” comes to a close with one last adventure with the characters of Love, Chuunibyo, and Other Delusions, in their 2018 movie, Take on Me! The film finds Rikka and Yuta off on a journey across Japan as they ‘elope' after Rikka's big sister Toka plans to move her to Italy for her final year of high school. Many hijinks ensue, and while Sean and Jonathan are again slightly divided on how effective the storytelling is, as they were with season 2, we enjoy celebrating just what a funny, lively production the film is, and the strong ending it delivers this great group of characters. Enjoy, and come back in June for the premiere of Part 6 of our Kyoto Vacation, where we'll be reviewing the film A Silent Voice before leaping into the world of Sound! Euphonium. Get In The Mecha is officially back! In this episode I'm catching up on some of the analysis that I missed by talking about some of the sleeper hits of 2022 that I think are worth going back to. How does Tatami Time Machine Blues differ from The Tatami Galaxy? How does The Girl From The Other Side configure into the current anime landscape? What can music videos teach us about storytelling? All this and more in this episode. Thanks so much for your patience over the first half of this year (and before that) - I'm graduating this month which means I finally have the time to produce the podcast consistently again. One of the great struggles for Christians is figuring out how to navigate life in a world that doesn’t embrace biblical values. PATREON MOVIE DISCUSSION: This movie was selected by our Patreon Supporters over at the Cinematic Doctrine Patreon. Support as little as $3 a month and have your voice heard! Ani-May is almost over, but there's still room for one more episode! Melanie and Melvin discuss A Silent Voice, the popular Kyoto Animation project from 2016 about an elementary school bully who seeks amends during High School. The catch? He incessantly bullied a deaf girl, and must overcome his shame before he can apologize. Topics:(FREE PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 54-minutes reflecting upon Princess Mononoke, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Puella Magi Madoka Magica while also discussing the recurrent themes of Ani-May: 'Self-Destruction by Evil Desire', 'Acceptance of Reality', and 'The Maturity of Growing' complete with biblical verses and theological discussion! (FREE PATREON EXCLUSIVE)Melanie was still processing A Silent Voice and verbalizes that something felt off, but she doesn't know what. The two explore what that may be.Melvin details what makes the original A Silent Voice One-Shot so great at exploring themes of bullying, shame, guilt, and the fear of reconciliation.Melvin then shares some thoughts on the Manga adaption, a seven-volume expansion on the original one-shot that goes in strange directions, never fully satisfying the promise of a complicated, mature teen romance.Melvin then discusses his thoughts on the movie which are wrapped in his thoughts on both the One-Shot and the Manga and how it may be one of the worst things he's ever seen.Accounting for cultural differences, Melanie, as a school teacher, was really upset with how the bullying was handled by the school staff to a fault.Melvin observes that Princess Mononoke, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Puella Magi Madoka Magica permit an open-ended exploration of their complicated, mature themes. A Silent Voice, however, hand-holds so aggressively it almost bruises the knuckles.Unlike the Manga and especially the One-Shot, the fact that Nishimiya has such little screentime is stupendously felt.Recommendations:Your Name. Sophie was 'drawn' to it for the pretty cover art, although the themes addressed in the film itself are anything but... This week's movie picks are ones that we chose because of our strong emotional connection to them. The movie that Kevin brought to the table is Sean Baker's 2017 drama/indie film, The Florida Project. Willem Dafoe stars alongside many unknown actors which gives this movie a very real and raw tone. Drew's choice is the 2016 anime film, A Silent Voice which is about bullying, depression and social anxiety. Both of these films have some heavy subject matter and that's kind of what drew us toward these picks. We chat about a few other flicks at the beginning and pick a couple of comedies for next time at the end. As always, thanks for tuning in and we hope you enjoy this episode. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/distortedminds/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/distortedminds/support
