Corpus Christi is a coastal city in the South Texas, and the county seat and largest city of Nueces County. The city's name literally means, body of Christ in Latin, in reference to the Christian sacrament of Holy Communion. And while Corpus Christi has tons of history, its one roadside oddity, that has kept people curious and wondering of its origins...a giant red demon statue, resembling the devil, that guards a recycling plant on Leopard Street. CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales says county is applying for a $90 million Living Breakwaters Project grant, in collaboration with the Port of Corpus Christi and other jurisdictions to create a coastal ecosystem that would mitigate the impact of storm surges from coastal hurricanes and storms. The application is being made to the Texas General Land Office for funds through the Community Development Block Grant – Mitigation (CDBG-MIT) program.Judge Canales was just one of several participants in a November 10 virtual town hall meeting hosted by State Rep. Terry Canales. The two Canales’ are not related. The discussion centered on the economic impact of the Port of Corpus Christi. Other speakers included state Sen. Juan Hinojosa, state Reps. Todd Hunter and Abel Herrero, CEO of the Port of Corpus Christi Sean Strawbridge and Todd Staples, president of the Texas Oil and Gas Association and former commissioner of the Texas Department of Agriculture."Our Texas ports, whether seaports or land ports between Texas and Mexico, are incredibly powerful economic engines for the State," said Rep. Canales, chairman of the House Committee on Transportation. "Texas transportation is often overshadowed by highways and bridges—which are of course essential to Texas's economy—but I think it's time to shine the spotlight on our ports for a moment to showcase just how impressive yet bottlenecked they are.” Rep. Canales represents District 40 in the Texas House. This district is based in the Rio Grande Valley. However, Rep. Canales hails from Alice, Texas, and knows the Coastal Bend area well. In fact, Rep. Hunter said he considers Canales part of the Coastal Bend delegation.Rep. Canales pointed out that in 2017, the Port of Corpus Christi was the second fastest growing seaport in the United States in terms of exports, growing by $4.69 billion.”Texas is stifling the growth of its seaports by not having a dedicated maritime funding source to ensure that the state's ports can keep up," Rep. Canales said. Rep. Canales said he viewed the virtual town hall meeting as an opportunity to hear about a great Texas asset and how important it is the daily lives of Texas residents.
MCALLEN, Texas - State Sen. Juan Hinojosa has given a brief overview of the 2020 Election from a South Texas perspective. In an exclusive eve-of-poll podcast with The Rio Grande Guardian, Hinojosa discusses the recent visit to the Valley by Kamala Harris, the Democratic Party nominee for Vice President of the United States. He also discusses whether Texas is in play for his party, after decades of Republican control. And he talks about the political scene in Corpus Christi, which is the northern part of his district.Hinojosa, a Democrat from McAllen, represents District 20 in the Texas Senate. The district includes the western half of Hidalgo County, including Edinburg, Mission, and part of McAllen, Brooks County, Jim Wells County and the eastern part of Nueces County. Editor's Note: The podcast is the first of a two-part series. Part Two looks ahead to the 87th Texas Legislature, which begins Nov. 12, 2021. Part Two will be published later this week.

Dagger Island is an island in Nueces County, Texas and part of Aransas Pass, Texas. At one point in time, Dagger Island was a nearly continuous, solid island separating Corpus Christi Bay and Redfish Bay. Erosion, primarily from increased ship traffic to the Port of Corpus Christi, has decreased the size of the island and broken it into a chain of smaller islands. This decline altered the function and values provided to the Redfish Bay system, including protection of large stands of seagrasses, which are important for water quality in the bay. Shane and John Blaha talk to Paul Silva of Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the lead biologist for the Dagger Island and Ransom Island Restoration Project. ALAMO, RGV - Matt Ruszczak has confirmed that sales tax revenues continue to go up in the Rio Grande Valley.Looking at the latest numbers issued by the Texas Comptroller’s Office, the executive director of Rio South Texas Economic Council says the four-county Valley region experienced a 13.49 percent increase in sales tax collections in July, 2019 - as compared to the same month last year. “This is a very, very, very, good figure,” Ruszczak said. What makes the percentage increase even more impressive, Ruszczak said, is that there was one less Sunday in July 2019 than July 2018.Hidalgo County’s increase in sales tax revenues for July 2019 was up a whopping 16.79 percent, compared to the same month last year. Cameron County’s increase was up 12.89 percent, and Starr County’s increase was up by a huge 17.5 percent. Willacy County’s sales tax revenues for July 2019 were down 12.89 percent but Ruszczak said this county’s numbers have been fluctuating all year. He noted that year to date, Willacy County’s numbers were up 14 percent. “It looks like an aberration,” Ruszczak said. Across the Valley as a whole, the year to date increase in sales tax revenues is four percent. The July sales tax revenue figures for the state of Texas show a healthy increase of 9.35 percent. The increase for Nueces County is 8.86 percent, while the increase for Webb County is 9.21 percent. In the above podcast, Ruszczak also looks at individual cities in the Valley.

-Originally aired on 08/01/2015- Episode 26 of "In The Oil Patch" This week on "In The Oil Patch": host Kym Bolado and her co-hosts Alvin Bailey and Roy Holley have Eddie Martinez, the General Cargo & Information Representative at the Port of Corpus Christi. Eddie explains that the Port of Corpus Christi is ranked number five in the nation. He's expecting the Port to be ranked number four very soon due to the plethora of commerce that sails in and out of the Port on a daily basis. The Port's mission is to leverage commerce and drive prosperity, and with people like Eddie that allow the day to day operations to run as smoothly as they have been, the growth rate of the Port should come as no surprise. Eddie also tells our listeners what can be brought in and out of the Port, how the operations are funded, economic development and sustainability in the Eagle Ford Shale region and how many countries come in and out of the Port on a monthly basis. From the Port of Corpus Christi's website: "All Port Commissioners have served without pay and, over the years, except for $5,300,00 in bonds paid through ad valorem taxes for certain improvements, the Port has acquired and owns many millions of dollars of Port facilities. In 1985 a bond issue of $25,000,000 was approved for Navy Homeport facilities. Except for the "Homeport" tax bonds, all other tax bonds have been paid many years ago. "Although the statutes under which the Navigation District was organized and operates authorizes the voters to authorize a tax for operating the Port and for maintaining its facilities and although many Ports have such a tax, the citizens of Nueces County have never asked for such authorization. Except for tax bonds issued to construct facilities as above mentioned, the Port has been self-supporting. "Said another way, Nueces County Navigation District No. 1 (now the Port of Corpus Christi Authority of Nueces County, Texas) is unique in Texas political history, not only because of the relatively few in number of the Port Commissioners who have served over the 75 years of its life but because it has been self-supporting from its inception. The District has never had a tax for operations. It owns over 21,000 acres of land, of which approximately 16,000 acres is submerged land, 8 cargo docks an 11 oil docks worth millions of dollars, and, except for the Homeport bonds, has only issued $5,300,000 in tax bonds."
