This is a special live recording featuring 8x masters world record holder Sue McDonald, 61, in conversation with WRS host and producer Cherie; that's me. We sat down the Tracksmith track house in Boston on Sat., Feb 1, to a wonderful group who braved snowy weather for this terrific conversation. We get into how McDonald has stayed healthy and competitive over her 40-plus year career as a highly competitive athlete—in many sports. And how, at age 59, she looked over the record books and set to raising the bar for what's possible for women athletes her age. She targeted not one, but many world bests. In her training and preparation McDonald left no stone unturned, and she talks about it all. Plus what she's doing today to remain fast, and work to get faster. This conversation, and the terrific Q&A that followed, provides many useful tips and takeaways to use in your own training and racing. Whether you're a masters racer, or you aspire to be one someday, there's a lot here for you. Sue McDonald currently holds 8 world records: 400m and 800m indoor and outdoor; 1 mile indoor; 300m hurdles; steeplechase, and heptathlon. She was a heptathlete through college, and became a nationally competitive pole vaulter in her post-collegiate years. She has also competed as a triathlete, and in 2018, she ran the Boston Marathon (the storm year!). In 2023 McDonald set 9 world records for 60-64 masters women and was named the USATF Masters Track and Field Athlete of the Year. To put her records in a different context, McDonald set or reset 15 world records over a 16 month period. Today's discussion on the podcast is one of depth around the hot topic of NCAA roster limits and how they will fundamentally change the nature of the NCAA forever. In my opinion, there's no better person to have this conversation with than Liberty University's Assistant Track Coach and Meet Director, Mark Fairley. Coach Mark recently written a letter to Congress in hopes of standing before a Federal Judge in April as an advocate for the removal of the NCAA's new proposed changes to roster limits. Coach Mark discusses his involvement and how he has educated his own athletes at Liberty on this issue, getting many to participate and get their voices out there. Coach Mark is a native of Dubuque, Iowa, and has worked his way up the ranks since joining as an interim assistant. Coach Mark found success as an athlete in the world of triathlon, earning his professional racing license in 2019. Coach Mark was a standout athlete at Central College, where he captured the men's steeplechase national title at the 2018 NCAA Division 3 Outdoor Championships as a senior. He has the school record in the steeplechase with a time of 8:57.39. His other PRs include a 4:16.42 in the mile; 8:23 in the 3K and 14:42.67 in the 5K. He was the Central Region Men's XC and Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Coach Mark graduated from Central College with a bachelor's degree in Exercise Science. He has a Master's Degree in sport management and is working toward a second in biblical studies. In today's conversation, we go through Coach Mark's individual accolades and accomplishments, how he rose in his coaching career, and then tackle the hot topic of roster-limits. He takes me through the 2.8 billion dollar NCAA settlement, revenue-sharing, and roster-limits. We discuss all of this at length and what it means for the next era of the NCAA. It's one thing to be born with a gift. It's another thing entirely to use it.Kenny Bednarek could've just been a kid from Wisconsin that ran fast, but this kid had a dream. And as we know, it's the dreamers that make history.Ensuring his name became legend, Bednarek captured the world's attention when he first claimed silver in the 200m at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Following that monumental achievement, 2021 seemed to be a victory lap for Kenny.Claiming four Diamond League wins in Lausanne, Zurich,Doha, and Gateshead; and another in the World Continental in Ostrava, Kenny was awarded “Most Consistent Track and Field Athlete,” Diamond League Champion, and made history as the first sprinter to ever run sub 20 in 10 wind-legal races in a single season.Although he's definitely encountered his share of difficulties,Kenny takes even hindrances in stride. Demonstrating his tenacity in 2022, he not only claimed silver in the World Championships 200m - just seven months after breaking a toe– but also acquired two Diamond League wins in Rabat andRome. In 2023, shortly after suffering a grade two hamstring strain and grade three fascia tear, he made the USA team and finished 5th at the World Championships 200m, followed by his complete domination in Brussels, where he earned the Diamond League title. With his injuries a thing of the past, Bednarek has shown us that a healthy Kenny is a dangerous Kenny. With four personal bests and two coveted titles to add to his collection, personal bests and two coveted titles to add to his collection, this is undoubtedly the best season of his career. We caught a glimpse of what Kenny had in store when he started the year with a 100m win in the World Continental Tour in Kenya; followed by a personal best of 19.67 and a tremendous win at the Doha Diamond League. Victorious yet again in the Prefontaine Diamond League, he went on to achieve two more personal bests during the Olympic trials-clocking 9.87 in the 100m and 19.59 in the 200m. This was the first time Bednarek made all three teams (100m, 200m,and 4x100m) at the Olympic trials; and with the distinction of being a two-time Olympian, Kenny made certain he left the 2024 Paris Olympics decorated with silver for a second time in the men's 200m.While it didn't seem possible to top his already exceptional year of achievements, consistent with his character, Bednarek went on to attain his fourth personal best at the Zurich Diamond League with an incredible 19.57 in the 200m. And finally, to conclude a most magnificent season, Bednarek bolted to glory with a spectacular win at the Diamond League meet in Brussels and the distinction of being crowned the Diamond League Champion. In any event, it has been truly remarkable to witness the rise and reign of Kung Fu Kenny. He's transformed from underdog to 2x Olympic silver medalist, 10x Diamond League winner, World Championship Silver Medalist, 2x Diamond League Champion, World #2 in the men's 200m,and the silent warrior that's here and coming for it all.Click here to follow Kenny on Instagram!Support the show
In this episode of All Things Endurance, host Rick Prince chats with personal trainer, running coach and multiple Masters world champion track & field athlete, Sue McDonald. Rick and Sue discuss her athletic background as well as her coaching business. Additionally, Sue discusses important factors in working with Masters athletes, why she enjoys track events vs. longer road races and how she balances her training with her other obligations. About Sue McDonald Sue McDonald is one of the most successful masters track and field athletes in the world who also ran on the national level and competed in the Olympic Trials. Sue has multiple Masters world and national titles on the track, as well as many accolades including the 2023 USATF and World Masters Track & Field Athlete of the Year awards! Areas covered in this podcast: 1. Could you tell me about yourself including your athletic background and your coaching/fitness business?2. Like many coaches, you're balancing a lot including coaching, training and family. However, you're training for multiple track events at the highest level of masters athletics. How do you balance everything?3. What are the primary events that you're currently training for?4. Masters athletes represent a meaningful demographic for our coaches. From a coaching perspective, what are some things that a coach should consider when working with a masters athlete?5. The prevailing belief is that as humans get older, they get slower. While this is true from a physiological standpoint, we also see some masters athletes staying at the same speed or getting faster as time goes on. When working with masters athletes, what things do you find most valuable in retaining or increasing an athlete's speed as they get older?6. Speaking of which, what are some of your current records and associated times?7. You also do pole vault. What does the training look like for that?8. It seems that a lot of runners now are trending toward longer distances (i.e., ultramarathons) and not so much shorter distances – especially track. What is the allure for you of track vs. longer road races or ultrarunning? How, if at all, has your recovery strategy changed over the years?

The story behind becoming 2023 USATF Masters Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Masters 60+ track and field athlete Sue McDonald has been a competitive athlete most of her life. And she's been a competitor in a wide variety of events: she'd started out her collegiate career as a heptathlete and has since continued to enjoy working at multiple disciplines, as well as trying new events (like the steeple!). So in 2022, when Sue was looking ahead at entering the 60+ masters age bracket, she didn't have just one event she was aiming to rewrite the records books in, she targeted several. In the end, Sue set 9 world records in the W60-64 category: indoors 800 and 1500; outdoors 400, 800, 300H, 1500, and Mile, as well as the Steeplechase and the Heptathlon. For her stellar achievements, Sue McDonald was named the 2023 USATF Masters Track and Field Athlete of Year. This is the story of what it took for Sue to be ready for a record-setting year. She left no area unconsidered: nutrition, mental prep, coaching, strength, lifestyle, physical training. And she gets into it all. This is what it took her to become a champion, many times over, and raise the bar for masters athletes. Don't let 70 year old Linda Cohn's soft demeanor fool you! But most importantly though, having a lot of fun on this journey with fellow masters athletes! You can be any age to start your story she says. She definitely knows this first hand as she started her track and field journey at age 50. “It's really a chance to let fans get to know them off the track. I feel like a lot of people know you from the track but for them to really support you and follow you throughout the season, they need to know about you off the track.” My guest for today's episode is Tiara Williams. Some of you may be familiar with her since her post-race interviews have garnered quite a bit of traction in the past two years. She pushes all of her content on her Instagram page called Real Talk With Tee. Tee was a former heptathlete at Bethune-Cookman and then Texas Tech, which is where she first decided to pick up a camera and mic. Her rapid ascent in the track content creator space has been super cool to watch. She was part of The Magic Boost Program that I helped start, where our vision is for a track and field media landscape where those covering the sport more fully reflect and resemble the athletes competing in the stadium: youthful, diverse, and innovative. Tee embodies all of those values in the way she's able to make athletes feel comfortable, open up and still have some fun. You've seen her videos. Now get to know the woman behind them. Commercial : CU of GA STORY 1 killed A fatal multi-vehicle crash occurred in Powder Springs, resulting in the death of a 54-year-old man named Gregory Brown of Dallas. The incident took place at the intersection of Richard D. Sailors Parkway and Old Lost Mountain Road. Brown was driving east in a Toyota Corolla, while a 29-year-old woman was driving a Ford Mustang in the same direction. Simultaneously, a 26-year-old man was heading west in a Hyundai Elantra. The Hyundai attempted to turn left onto Old Lost Mountain Road and collided with Brown's Toyota, which then struck the Ford and a metal pole. Brown was taken to Wellstar Cobb Hospital, where he later passed away. The driver of the Ford sustained injuries and was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact Cobb police...........……... Read more about this at mdjonline.com Story 2: hearing Two Cobb County residents have sought to join a lawsuit against the Cobb Board of Commissioners over the redrawing of commission district boundaries. Cobb Commissioner Keli Gambrill, a Republican, initiated the lawsuits in response to the Democratic majority's use of "home rule" powers to redraw their district lines, specifically to benefit Commissioner Jerica Richardson. The county motioned to dismiss the case because Gambrill does not reside in the district affected. However, Gambrill has now requested the court to include Catherine and David Floam as plaintiffs, arguing that they were previously in Gambrill's district but were moved to District 3 due to the county's maps. Cobb County attorneys countered that the Floams lack standing. Both sides await resolution through the court process. Story 3: parade The city of Marietta is hosting its annual "4th in the Park Celebration" today, starting with the "Let Freedom Ring" parade at 10 a.m. The parade will have over 2,000 participants and is expected to draw a crowd of around 30,000 people. The parade route will be closed 45 minutes before the event, and roads around Glover Park will remain closed all day. The parade will start on Roswell Street, pass through Marietta Square, and end at Cherokee Street and North Marietta Parkway. The grand marshal of the parade is Charlie Duncan, a 104-year-old World War II veteran. The festivities will include arts and crafts, a kids zone, food, and free concerts featuring Scott Thompson, the Atlanta Concert Band, and the Patriarchs Band. The headline concert at 8 p.m. will feature the Atlanta-based band Boogilicious, and fireworks will be launched from the parking lot of First United Methodist Church at around 9:30 p.m. Due to limited parking, attendees are encouraged to use cabs or ride-sharing services, with the designated drop-off and pick-up location at the intersection of Lawrence and Waddell streets.........….we'll be right back Break: Dayco - ESOG - jrm STORY 4: ag Georgia's agriculture commissioner, Tyler Harper, emphasized the significant role farmers play in the lives of Georgians during a speech at the Cobb County Republican Women's Club luncheon. He reminded attendees that agriculture is the state's largest industry, contributing over $70 billion and more than 340,000 jobs to the economy. Harper, a seventh-generation farmer, highlighted the values of hard work, faith, and integrity instilled in him through his upbringing. He praised a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision that ruled against the EPA's expansive regulatory efforts in the Waters of the United States (WOTUS) case, stating that it violated property rights and gave the federal government excessive control over resources. Harper believes that farmers are best equipped to manage their own land and emphasizes the importance of sustainability in small, family farms. STORY 5: prize The winner and finalists of the 10th annual Poet Laureate's Prize in Georgia have been announced by Chelsea Rathburn, the state's Poet Laureate, in collaboration with the Georgia Council for the Arts. The prize recognizes an original poem written by a high school student in Georgia, aiming to inspire young writers and promote poetry. This year, over 200 students submitted their poems. The winner for 2023 is Eniola Badejo from Hillgrove High School, and the finalists are Isabella Fonseca, Andrea Lam, Celina Simone, and Jeonghyeon "Erica" Yun. All winning and finalist poems are featured on Atlanta Magazine's website. Georgia high school students are encouraged to participate in the annual competition, with details for the 2024 competition available on the Georgia Council for the Arts website in fall 2023. Story 6: walk Keli Gambrill, the commissioner for west Cobb, hosted her monthly "Walk and Talk" meetup at Allatoona Creek Park, marking the fourth event of the year. The purpose of these gatherings is to connect with constituents in District 1, enjoy nature together, and stay updated on the happenings in the northwest Cobb community. Gambrill initiated these events in March, aiming to meet people where they are and facilitate open communication in a comfortable setting. The recent event saw attendees like Josh Camp from MTB Atlanta, a nonprofit organization working to expand mountain biking trails. MTB Atlanta and Cobb County raised $23,000 for Allatoona Creek Park through a raffle and a bike race. Residents Vicki and Victor Williams also attended, appreciating the accessibility and exposure these events provide. The next "Walk and Talk" will take place at Lost Mountain Park on July 26..…………we're back, in a moment Break Elon – Ingle's 8- Drake Story 7: influencers Neely Young, former publisher of Georgia Trend magazine, spoke at the Kiwanis Club of Marietta about his book "Georgia Made: The Most Important Figures Who Shaped the State in the 20th Century." The book explores influential Georgians, including President Jimmy Carter and Martin Luther King Jr., covering athletes, politicians, activists, and more. While the repetitive nature of the sport challenged him mentally, he learned the importance of pacing himself and taking breaks to prevent burnout. Story 9: jamil McCeachern alum redshirt junior Jamil Burroughs, a defensive lineman for the Alabama Crimson Tide, has entered the transfer portal. Burroughs played in 20 games over three seasons and was expected to be part of the team's defensive line rotation in the upcoming season. However, his status came into question after reports of a physical altercation with an Alabama staff member. Burroughs' eligibility for the upcoming season is uncertain, and he may need a waiver from the NCAA to play. Burroughs is the fourth defensive player and the first defensive lineman to leave Alabama since the end of last season. The team has recruited new interior defensive linemen to fill the gaps.
