My guest today is Clemence Poles, a creative director, photographer, curator, and the founder of Passerby – an online magazine and community that celebrates the women who pass us by. Passerby features the cool creative women in New York, LA, and London, yes – but it also platforms the scientists, archivists, nurses and lawyers whose stories are rarely shared, much less celebrated. Clemence and I talked about our changing notions of success, the current saturation of curation culture, and the return of gatekeeping, among many other topics. I hope you enjoy the conversation. - @phoebelovatt @phoebelovattpubliclibrary @clemencepoles passerbymagazine.com

Nothing is civil about war, and nothing is ever as it seems in The Twilight Zone. This month we take a look at two Civil War themed episodes, "The Passerby" from season 3 and "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" from season 5. Each episode not only plays in the sandbox of Civil War themes, but also takes a look at the supernatural realm, passing through to the afterlife, family, and paying for one's acts while on earth. Each episode not only plays in the sandbox of Civil War themes, but also takes a look at the supernatural realm, passing through to the afterlife, family, and paying for one's acts while on earth. "The Passerby" includes a wonderful Abraham Lincoln portrayal from Austin Green, while "Owl Creek" is a short-film that was purchased as a completed project and edited to become last episode of The Twilight Zone ever produced. We had a lot to say about each of these wonderful episodes, and hope you enjoy our discussion. Sunrise Life - beyond skin deep conversations with freelance nude models
Jay Ban is a nurse as well as a nude model, she juggles both of these lives elegantly! We talked quite a bit about what it was like for her to just love modeling for the joy of creating art, modeling "tfp" (meaning unpaid) for so many years before deciding to take her efforts more seriously. Photographers offered to hire her frequently! So she made the shift into professional freelance modeling. My eyes were bugging out of my head when she told the story of the crazy passerby who caught her and another model posing nude for an outdoor photoshoot!! It was so fun and interesting having this conversation. Check Jay Ban out on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/jaybanmodel/ She is also on Model Mayhem https://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/3719216 Cover image by Jim Hagen

What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. Pieter Coudyzer made "The Passerby," writing and directing this beautiful animated film. Pieter took home Outstanding Short Film – Animation and Outstanding Screenplay – Animation at the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2021. I need every superlative in the dictionary to describe this film. It is an absolute must-see. Pieter jumped on Zoom from his home in Belgium to talk to me all about his life and work. Of course I had him answer the 4Qs above while I had him on the line. Writer/Director/Animator Pieter Coudyzer made the remarkable film "The Passerby." This film played at the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2021 and took home two awards; Outstanding Short Film – Animation and Outstanding Screenplay – Animation. I already called this film "remarkable," but honestly I would use every superlative in the book for this film. It is an absolute must-see. It was delightful to get to speak to Pieter without a time limit. I hope you enjoy hearing his story as much as I do. Something that generally goes unnoticed in chapter fifteen is that Yeshua/Jesus has ceased to be the main character, replaced by a multitude of “they” references. He is no longer the actor but the acted upon. What does this have to do with the forces of chaos, evil, sin, and death? And where exactly did the crucifixion take place?

Timestamps:00:45: The capacity of our brains to receive knowledge. Fancy way of saying "thinking." Is Art a kind of thinking, is it the same thing as our "normal" thinking?02:00: Art makes you think. It is thought. A cognitive theory of Art vs the spiritual perspective of Art. 03:10: If Art is just biological, is it still beautiful? Interpretation is key. When we look at "Art" it is beautiful to us and becomes special by holding beauty. 04:25: Does life lose something special when we think of ourselves as purely biological? 05:35: Don't think of it as "I'm thinking about it." Just think instead of putting titles or labels on the experience. Just look at it. Wittgenstein's notion of "Seeing as"07:40: Philosophers of Art. Art is a break from the thinking. It's not about fitting it into a category. Instead, we just experience it immediately, we submerge ourselves in the experience.08:50: Beauty in just being. Just existing is beautiful. From 1981 to 1993, Jane Greer edited Plains Poetry Journal, publishing poets who were reviving the traditional tools of “rhyme, meter, alliteration, assonance, painstaking attention to diction” which had been abandoned in favor of free verse. (These poets included names you will be familiar with from the Catholic scene today, such as Anthony Esolen and Mike Aquilina.) Then, as they say, life happened, and Greer didn't write a single poem for almost thirty years. But God's ways are unpredictable. After three decades of silence, Greer was suddenly struck with a poem while sitting in a New Orleans café. This began a steady stream of output resulting in her new collection, Love Like a Conflagration (which also includes the poems from her only previous book). Greer's poetry is musical, fiery and accessible, and has received high praise from many of today's foremost Catholic poets, including past podcast guests Samuel Hazo, James Matthew Wilson, Anthony Esolen and Mike Aquilina. Hazo writes: “There is not a poem in this remarkable book that will leave you unchanged or be forgotten … Each of these poems is as permanently current as it is consummate. [Greer] puts on the page the passion long absent from American poetry. I've never read a book as poetically and beautifully frank as this.” Contents [2:57] Style and intended audience of Jane's work [3:53] The introductory poem to Love Like a Conflagration, “Micha-el” [9:00] Structure of the collection [12:22] “Her Green Desire” [16:19] Jane's 30-year hiatus from poetry and providential return [23:13] “At the Cafe Pontalba”, Jane's first poem after 30 years of silence [25:27] Jane's beginnings as a self-taught poet and early influences [30:30] “Because God Wanted It”, a poem about unmerited grace [34:28] The relationship between Jane's spiritual life and her poetry [38:12] Dealing with lust in “Song of the Passerby” and “Pastoral” [45:08] Jane's work founding and editing Plains Poetry Journal [50:27] “Bourbon, Neat” and pure play with language [55:34] The immersive musicality and force of Jane's poetry [57:50] “Feminist Androgyne” [1:03:15] “The Haunting” [1:05:09] “Twice Betrayed”, a poem in Lazarus' voice [1:10:49] “In the Pool at the Bourbon Orleans” Links Read “Micha-el” https://isi.org/modern-age/micha-el/ Love Like a Conflagration https://lambingpress.com/product/love-like-a-conflagration/ This podcast is a production of CatholicCulture.org. April 10, 1834 Delphine LaLaurie, a prominent member of the wealthy Macarty clan, owned a massive mansion in downtown New Orleans. The wealthy socialite was known to throw extravagant parties for other rich socialites in the city and was well known in the area. However, like many wealthy and powerful individuals whom we discuss, Delphine had a dark secret hiding within the walls of her home. In the morning hours of April 10th, 1834, a fire breaks out in the LaLaurie mansion. Passerby’s begin to gather as fireman enter the building to assist with extinguishing the flames. As the fireman work their way through the building they stumble upon a terrifying discovery: The mansion has two sets of secret floors and rooms. Within these hidden rooms held something so heinous and macabre it is still talked about today… "The Tortured and mutilated bodies of slaves" Check out our socials for more updates! We look at consequences of bypassing and what motivates it, vs finding ways to quickly and consciously move through our shit. It's about CHOICE, AWARENESS, and INTENTION. Each year from Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve, you’ll spot The Salvation Army’s red kettles outside of grocery stores and shopping malls just about everywhere you go. The kettle debuted in San Francisco in 1891 in the midst of a depression that had thrown many out of work. A Salvation Army officer put out a crab pot on the ferry landing to collect donations to feed those who were hungry on Christmas Day. Passerby dropped in coins and the campaign was born. Now every year, about 25,000 bell ringers, young and old, brave the elements to help The Salvation Army raise money for local community programs. And yes, money given in your community stays in your community. Those gifts allow The Salvation Army to serve 23 million Americans a year. And in Redding, California, Captain Timothy Danielson runs the local Salvation Army kettle campaign with 100 percent volunteer bell ringers. Last year, those volunteers gave 2,300 hours ringing the bell. Collectively, they raised more than $136,000—a 7 percent increase from 2017. But as Danielson says, though critical for raising money to keep Salvation Army ministry going—the red kettle serves as a reminder to busy, Christmas passerby that hope exists. Wherever and whenever this ghost of my voice finds you I hope you are well. Welcome to the RunRunLive podcast Episode 4-327. Today we have a great talk with Kyle and Brent Pease who are a team of brothers that run races. I think you’ll dig their story and get a kick out of their running adventures. In the first section I’m going to talk a bit about flexibility and range of motion. In the second section I’m going to talk about Dr. Carol Dweck’s book, “Mindsets”. …It’s been a good couple weeks since we last chatted. I am recovered from my rolled ankle and running well. I’ve got a bit of a head cold today so I apologize for the sexy voice. I’m heading down to Atlanta this weekend, actually tomorrow, to run the Jeff Galloway half. It will be a good test race for me. I’m planning to go out at marathon pace, try to pace it well and close strong. Weather looks reasonable. It’s a hilly course, but that’s ok, I need the work and the practice. I raced the Mill Cities Relay last weekend. It’s a 5-leg, invitation only, local club relay race. I was the captain of a senior team. The legs are all different lengths but there’s one long one, leg 4, which is a 9.5 miles and that was my leg. We got perfect racing weather. It was mid-30’s and sunny with no wind – so it ran warmer than the temperature. I raced in short shorts, a long sleeve tech with my club singlet over it, a fuzzy hat and light cotton gloves. I carried a bottle of UCan. Leg 4 is an entirely slight downhill route that follows the Merrimack River. It’s additionally challenging because the leg before it is only 2.5 miles so you really don’t have much time to warm up. You basically have to jump out of the car and go. My plan was to pace it at near my target marathon pace of 8 minute miles then close hard at the end to mimic a step-up or negative split. Me being me, instead I lit out like a cat with its tail on fire and was racing in the low 7’s from the start. Once I got a couple miles in I managed to calm down a bit and came in with an overall average of 7:26 for the leg. I was happy with the time, because, like the Thanksgiving 5k it shows me that I have gotten some of my speed back. My legs were the constraint. I was hurting in the last couple miles with dead legs and wouldn’t have made it much farther. Someone took a picture of me on the course and my form is crappy. In the picture I’m over-striding. My quads were dead and it wrecked my form. With this additional data point I’ve pivoted my workouts to longer tempo training away from the speed work. I got 2 more 9+ mile step-up runs in this week going into Sunday’s race. I’ll see how marathon pace feels on the legs for the half and that will give me a good idea of where I am. If all goes well I’ll try to target a race in January to see if I can stretch it out to the full 42k. All good. I feel strong. The heart is hanging in there. …I drove up to Buffalo NY last week from where I live in Mass. It’s interesting to drive through upstate NY and Western Mass. 100 years ago this area was the center of industry and commerce. Each valley has a town with a brick factory, a rail line and a court house, but there’s not much industry anymore. I drove by the Erie Canal and many tumble-down farms and old buildings. It’s not to say that the area is super depressed or a wasteland, it isn’t. It just isn’t industrial anymore. It’s like a museum to the industrial age. But, when I see one of those finely crafted brick buildings in the landscape I see a person’s dream. Someone had the dream and the persistence to put a factory there or a house or a barn. They dreamed big of a better future. They bet big on a big future. They took leaps of faith and built without knowing what was going to happen. I wonder where those people are today. Where are they that believe in growth and abundance? Who among us has the curiosity and drive to build something new on the landscape? Maybe it’s me. Maybe it’s you. On with the show. Keep an eye out for Kyle and Brent when you’re out at races, say ‘hi’. I’m racing this weekend at the Galloway. Then I’m going to load up a couple cycles of high mileage to bulk up my distance on top pf my speed and tempo and with that, who knows? Maybe I’ll be ready to requalify. It’s a scary thing for me. Now that I find myself on the precipice again it scares me. But, you never know how a race is going to turn out until you stand on the starting line and take the test. I’ve got a guy recording the audio version of my MarathonBQ book. He does a podcast called the “Passerby” podcast which is about story telling. Remember if you stop getting the RunRunLive podcast every 2 weeks go into iTunes and re-subscribe to the new feed. …Last week. In addition to driving to Buffalo I was also on a plane in Alabama. When I got on the plane I mistakenly sat in the wrong seat. I knew I had an aisle seat, but I sat in D when I was supposed to be in C. This odd gentleman sits in the C seat and is looking at his ticket confusedly. He mumbles something about ‘I think you’re in my seat’. I check my boarding pass and say ‘you’re right – but it’s the same seat if you just want to stay there’.He says ‘no’ and he wants his seat. I’m like, ‘OK buddy, no problem’ and we do the dosey-doe and swap aisle seats right next to each other. The other passengers are giving bemused smirks and ironically raised eyebrows. The thing is, now that I’m in my correct seat, the C seat there’s an empty seat next to me. It’s the only empty seat on the whole plane. Karma. I try to be super nice to people this time of year because everyone is so stressed out. If you follow me on social media you might notice that I don’t jump on any of the hate and religion and politics stuff. It doesn’t affect me one way or another what you are angry about. You see, I figure I can really only control my side of the relationship. And even if you are doing a really bad job of executing your side of the relationship by, let’s say, being a dick, I still can only control my own thoughts and actions, and that’s where I focus my energy. So as we stroll through the end of the year why don’t you try to be the best customer that sales clerk has ever had? Why don’t you try to be the partner that your loved ones deserve? Why don’t you try to be that member of your community and society that holds up your end of the relationship? Because that’s under your control. And while you’re noodling that, I’ll see you out there. Wherever and whenever this ghost of my voice finds you I hope you are well. Welcome to the RunRunLive podcast Episode 4-327. Today we have a great talk with Kyle and Brent Pease who are a team of brothers that run races. I think you'll dig their story and get a kick out of their running adventures. In the first section I'm going to talk a bit about flexibility and range of motion. In the second section I'm going to talk about Dr. Carol Dweck's book, “Mindsets”. …It's been a good couple weeks since we last chatted. I am recovered from my rolled ankle and running well. I've got a bit of a head cold today so I apologize for the sexy voice. I'm heading down to Atlanta this weekend, actually tomorrow, to run the Jeff Galloway half. It will be a good test race for me. I'm planning to go out at marathon pace, try to pace it well and close strong. Weather looks reasonable. It's a hilly course, but that's ok, I need the work and the practice. I raced the Mill Cities Relay last weekend. It's a 5-leg, invitation only, local club relay race. I was the captain of a senior team. The legs are all different lengths but there's one long one, leg 4, which is a 9.5 miles and that was my leg. We got perfect racing weather. It was mid-30's and sunny with no wind – so it ran warmer than the temperature. I raced in short shorts, a long sleeve tech with my club singlet over it, a fuzzy hat and light cotton gloves. I carried a bottle of UCan. Leg 4 is an entirely slight downhill route that follows the Merrimack River. It's additionally challenging because the leg before it is only 2.5 miles so you really don't have much time to warm up. You basically have to jump out of the car and go. My plan was to pace it at near my target marathon pace of 8 minute miles then close hard at the end to mimic a step-up or negative split. Me being me, instead I lit out like a cat with its tail on fire and was racing in the low 7's from the start. Once I got a couple miles in I managed to calm down a bit and came in with an overall average of 7:26 for the leg. I was happy with the time, because, like the Thanksgiving 5k it shows me that I have gotten some of my speed back. My legs were the constraint. I was hurting in the last couple miles with dead legs and wouldn't have made it much farther. Someone took a picture of me on the course and my form is crappy. In the picture I'm over-striding. My quads were dead and it wrecked my form. With this additional data point I've pivoted my workouts to longer tempo training away from the speed work. I got 2 more 9+ mile step-up runs in this week going into Sunday's race. I'll see how marathon pace feels on the legs for the half and that will give me a good idea of where I am. If all goes well I'll try to target a race in January to see if I can stretch it out to the full 42k. All good. I feel strong. The heart is hanging in there. …I drove up to Buffalo NY last week from where I live in Mass. It's interesting to drive through upstate NY and Western Mass. 100 years ago this area was the center of industry and commerce. Each valley has a town with a brick factory, a rail line and a court house, but there's not much industry anymore. I drove by the Erie Canal and many tumble-down farms and old buildings. It's not to say that the area is super depressed or a wasteland, it isn't. It just isn't industrial anymore. It's like a museum to the industrial age. But, when I see one of those finely crafted brick buildings in the landscape I see a person's dream. Maybe it's me. Maybe it's you. On with the show. Are you the Traveler, the Passerby, the Samaritan, or have you been each of them? This is just one of the questions the parable of the Good Samaritan asks us.
The Fairy Palace, a story from China, is one of those quest stories about going on a trek to retrieve or obtain something of great value. It also features another common motif: someone with extraordinary skill in weaving, spinning, or sewing. And it really does involve fairies. And a palace. In our case, it also contains a few references to other stories, including Jack and the Beanstalk, The Emperor's New Clothes, Harry Potter, and the film Casablanca. We come to you from Delaware Seashore State Park, as we take a rare 4-day break in the middle of this, our second-busiest summer ever. We're wrapping up our July appearances at 33 Delaware libraries and 5 Maryland libraries, before going on to New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. On the way out here from Arkansas, we were able to stop at a log cabin in Tennessee that we've mentioned many times over the years in our popular story about the legendary hero who was born there: David ("Davy") Crockett. It looked very much as we'd pictured it, only more so. It really is right beside the Nolichucky River, which really does exist. We then spent Independence Day at Kiptopeke State Park on Chesapeake Bay in Virginia, hiking and kayaking and exploring the terrain in quest of something else that rhymes with those two things – a futile quest since we don't have bikes at the moment. But we did discover a fleet of concrete ships (we'll pause for a moment while that sinks in) that served during World War II when steel was hard to come by. Evidently they worked okay, because they're still afloat now, just waiting for double-takes. We've also been on a mission to put our feet on almost every board on almost every boardwalk on the East Coast, including those in Ocean City MD, Rehoboth Beach DE, and Bethany Beach DE. We especially enjoyed Ocean City because of Trimper's Rides, an old-fashioned amusement arcade that's been a fixture since before your grandfather was a grandfather. We hope the rest of your summer is as charming and memorable as a boardwalk (not a bored walk). Happy Listening,Dennis (Merchant, Son, Passerby, Second Fairy, Third Fairy) and Kimberly (Narrator, Mother, Old Woman, First Fairy)
We recorded episodes 6 and 7 on the same day, so the audio is still low on this episode as well. Sorry! We're working with new equipment and we'll get it right soon. This also means we were recording in the past, the future, and the present all at the same time. Mind blowing! Fairy Princess Holly from the We're Mean Because You're Stupid podcast is once again doing the Walk For Animals to benefit the Humane Society. Please help her out by donating to a very worthy cause that is near to all of our hearts. For every $25 donated, a total of $75 will be donated to the Humane Society. A little goes a long way. Click here to donate and help out. We talk about some more observations, some of which are a little embarrassing, but we all can relate to. Chris wants to hook up with a barely legal Hat Rack. RJ gets his first semi-hate comment on his site and is happy about it and wants more real hate mail. Many ramblings occur in this episode as we were getting tired recording two shows in one night. A reminder once again about Pride48.com. So far there are a total of 28 podcasters on board for the June 25-27 weekend of live podcasting. We got our recording equipment from B&H Photo Video. The equipment is great. It's our own screw-up for the low audio. Again, we'll get that fixed.
