Three-time Paralympic Champion Anna Grimaldi found success in an unexpected area this year. The Dunedin-based athlete was New Zealand's only gold medallist at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, claiming the gold in the T47 200m final. She narrowly missed medalling in the T47 women's long jump, the event she had dominated at the last two Paralympic Games. Grimaldi joined Piney to reflect on her success in Paris, in an unexpected event. “If someone had said ‘you're coming home from Paris with the gold', I would have said' I would have thought it was in the long jump,” she said. “It wasn't really on my radar to be winning the 200.” “It's been a, it's been a crazy, like, a bit whiplash, actually, because obviously the long jump didn't go so well, and then coming away with sort of the gold but like, in a completely different event... it was, it was incredible.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

From the outside looking in, the long jump event in track and field doesn't seem very complicated. You run and then, well, jump. What's so difficult about that? But, experts that know a little more than the average human say that the long jump is actually one of the most technically complex events in all of sports. And that's kind of like living out the Christian life. From the outside looking in it doesn't sound that difficult to make happen. You just need to love, rejoice, be patient, holy, and pure. How hard can that be? So, it's a bit of shock when the average Joe tries to live it out and simply can't. But, thank God that He is the ultimate spiritual track and field coach, and it is His desire to train us to succeed in this impossible event known as “living a godly life.” This is a fun biographical message in which Eric shares twenty brief stories in his life that explain the many technically complex moments in his journey that have made up his personal long jumping adventure.

Larissa Iapichino is the European long jump silver medallist indoors and out. She talks to The Warm Up Track about being the daughter of Fiona May, winner of two long jump World titles and two Olympic silver medals. Larissa is coached by her father, Gianni, who was also an elite athlete and coached her mother too, so how do they keep athletics and their family life separate? How does Larissa cope with having a famous mum and the inevitable comparisons that come with that? She tells us why it's important to pay attention to all of her life's different ‘spheres'; because she's not only an athlete, she's a friend, a sister, a daughter and much more besides. With her mother Fiona May competing first for Great Britain and later for Italy, what's it like being a child of both places? Why does Larissa love the rain in Derby, but not Italian rain? While her mother is her mentor, she's also a bag of nerves when her daughter is jumping – so where in the stadium was she when Larissa was winning European silver in Rome?Plus, you'll also find out why the BBC conjures up memories of visiting her grandparents in the English Midlands.Photo: Italy's Larissa Iapichino competes in the women's long jump final during day six of the 26th European Athletics Championships - Rome 2024 at Stadio Olimpico on June 12, 2024 in Rome, Italy. Yulimar Rojas of Venezuela is the Olympic Champion, World Record Holder, 4-time World Champion and 3-time World Indoor Champion in the Triple Jump. She recently announced that she will not compete at the 2024 Olympics due to an Achilles injury, ending her consecutive gold medal streak. The Triple Jump is often forgotten and far from the most popular events, especially compared to track events like the 100m, 1500m or even field events like the Shot Put and Long Jump. But in just the past 5 years, Rojas and a few other women have arguably produced the most dominance in the event that we have seen in over 15 years. The women's event is relatively young, only getting added to the Olympics in 1996, but in the 30 years since then, there have been a few different era's where women have pushed the boundaries of what is possible in the event. Since winning her first Gold medal in 2017, Yulimar Rojas has arguably ushered in a new era of women's jumping that will be on full display at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Despite Rojas' absence this year, the Women's Triple Jump is in very good hands and will likely be one of, if not the most competitive event to watch at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris this summer. Today we'll dive into a brief history of the Women's Triple Jump, discuss the different era's of the event over the past 30 years as well as highlight the top contenders for the podium in Paris later this summer. “Truthfully, this training season, I have been grinding like I've never grind before. I think getting second in Budapest was a blessing in disguise. Last year, I was working hard but wasn't doing the last rep of abs or finishing the last rep of 150s as hard as possible. I was going through the motions. This year, I am taking every rep and making it like my first rep…This year, I am just giving myself a chance. It's almost insane to watch myself do this because I've never been that die-hard of a track athlete. This year, I'm honing in on that. I think that also comes with my maturity in the sport. I'm turning 25 this year. I feel like I'm getting older and figuring out the way of life a little bit.” Tara Davis-Woodhall joins the show just days after winning the U.S. Indoor Track and Field Championships. She went 7.18m for the world lead, the second longest mark in U.S. women's history and moved her to No. 6 on the all-time world list. Last year, she earned her first global championship medal with a silver at the World Championships in Budapest. She is the U.S. long jump favorite for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials, where she'll try to make her second Olympic team. She was sixth at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. For the ultimate tips on longevity in women 40 and over we're diving into whole body vibration in this episode with a spokesperson and brand ambassador for Power Plate. Did you know whole body vibration was first used by astronauts to essentially add protection of bones when in space? Did you know the brand I use, Power Plate, has been available for 20 years? My Guest: Caroline Pearce, a former international heptathlete and bobsledder for Great Britain, seamlessly transitioned into a successful career as a TV presenter, reporter, commentator, and event host. Holding a First Class Honors Degree in Sports Science and a Master's Degree in Nutrition and Exercise Physiology from Loughborough University, she is also a published author and a go-to fitness and nutrition consultant. Currently a leading host and reporter for TNT Sports UK, Caroline presents pre and post-fight shows and interviews on the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) and boxing. She has also served as a host for ESPN, Fox Sports and NBC Sports. As a fitness and health expert with over 15 years of experience, she is an author, produced an award-winning DVD fitness series, and content contributor. She is here because of her 20 years as a master trainer specializing in Power Plate whole body vibration education. Her extensive athletic career includes achievements as a national heptathlon champion and silver medallist in the Long Jump. Caroline represented Great Britain in the European Cup Heptathlon Team and later joined the Great Britain Bobsleigh team competing at the World Championships. This is the second episode of our series made in collaboration with Two Circles, where we model the market for sport over the next decade.Today we analyse the role of the athlete, and to help us we're delighted to welcome Jazz Sawyers, British track and field athlete, two time Olympian, five time national champion who recently won gold in the Long Jump at the European Indoor Championships in Istanbul, where she broke the British record by breaking the 7 metre barrier for the first time.Off the track, Sawyers has developed a sports presenting career, competed in The Voice on BBC and also found time to study for a law degree. Joining Jazz are Leo Thompson and Christian Harrell-Baker from Two Circles. Together we ask what will the market for sport reward over the next decade, and what will it punish, who will win and who will lose? Jazz Sawyers is managed independently by Jon Kilmartin, Director of Media Strategy and Insights at Two Circles, and we thank him for his help in setting up the podcast. Hear the first episode of the series here, recorded live at the Two Circles Client Summit in London. Unofficial Partner is the leading podcast for the business of sport.
