Kate O'Connor is not just good at one event... she has SEVEN! 800 Metres (indoor and outdoor), Shot Put, Long Jump, High Jump, Hurdles, Javelin! It's tiring just reading the list! The World Champion and Olympic contender for Team Ireland joins Alison on Weekend Breakfast for a brilliant chat about life as a heptathlete (and yes, how to say it!) — and what it really takes to be good at seven disciplines, not just one.Kate shares how she fell into multi-events “organically,” thanks a lot to her to her dad's encouragement - he is tell her coach to this day. She opens up about the toughest event to master, the mindset behind constant learning, and the whirlwind of medals, records and media attention! And perhaps the most important of all -- inspiring the young athletes of Ireland to live their own dream!Kate chatted to Alison as part of the SPAR and Eurospar Community Fund - helping more kids get into sport by investing in their clubs. The Community Fund initiative will see €60,000 awarded to 30 sports clubs across the country. Nominees are being asked to submit a short application to showcase how their club is ‘Hungry For Success'.Entries are now open and will close on Wednesday, July 8th.
In 1943, with Nazi Germany reeling from catastrophic defeat at Stalingrad, Hitler allegedly approved one of the most audacious assassination plots in history — a plan to kill Roosevelt, Churchill, AND Stalin simultaneously. All three Allied leaders. In one city. In one strike. Operation Long Jump, as it has come to be known, was an alleged German scheme to eliminate all three leaders in a single, devastating strike. The plan reportedly relied on a sophisticated intelligence network already embedded in Iran, a country that, despite Allied occupation, remained a hotbed of Axis sympathizers and covert operatives. German intelligence services, operating under a fractured and rivalrous Nazi security apparatus, are said to have activated assets in Tehran to support the mission — a logistical undertaking of enormous complexity in the middle of a world war. Yet the operation never came to fruition, and the reasons why remain a matter of significant historical debate. Soviet intelligence claimed credit for uncovering and dismantling the plot before it could be executed. Roosevelt, meanwhile, was persuaded to relocate from the American legation to the Soviet embassy, ostensibly for security reasons — a move that, intentionally or not, placed him squarely within the reach of NKVD surveillance and raised uncomfortable questions about Allied trust and communication security. The validity of Operation Long Jump has been questioned by historians ever since. British and American intelligence agencies expressed skepticism at the time, and the absence of corroborating German documentation makes the plot difficult to verify. Much of the evidence originates from Soviet sources, including confessions extracted by the NKVD through methods that were notoriously coercive. Historians point out that the operation, as described, would have been logistically near-impossible given the wartime conditions of 1943. Compounding the intrigue is the context of Roosevelt's rapidly deteriorating health, which made his presence at Tehran symbolically vital yet physically precarious. The conference went ahead, the leaders survived, and the war continued on its course — leaving Operation Long Jump as one of history's most compelling, and most contested, what-ifs. On Sunday, February 9th, the ISTAF Indoor Meeting in Dusseldorf Germany will use the new Take off Zone in the Women's Long Jump for the first time. This new change was very controversial and criticized by most long jumpers when first announced in 2024. So what is this new format and why have athletes been critical? From the outside looking in, the long jump event in track and field doesn't seem very complicated. You run and then, well, jump. What's so difficult about that? But, experts that know a little more than the average human say that the long jump is actually one of the most technically complex events in all of sports. And that's kind of like living out the Christian life. From the outside looking in it doesn't sound that difficult to make happen. You just need to love, rejoice, be patient, holy, and pure. How hard can that be? So, it's a bit of shock when the average Joe tries to live it out and simply can't. But, thank God that He is the ultimate spiritual track and field coach, and it is His desire to train us to succeed in this impossible event known as “living a godly life.” This is a fun biographical message in which Eric shares twenty brief stories in his life that explain the many technically complex moments in his journey that have made up his personal long jumping adventure.

A long overdue episode featuring 3 national champions from the 2024 Outdoor National Meet. Megan Johnson and Caroline McMartin went 1-2 in the steeplechase from Central College. We speak to them about how cool it was going 1-2, the great year of Central College, and what they did to buy in. The Freshman sensation, Haley Schoeneggee of Vassar, fills us in how she went from high school to being a national champion.
