The Midday Live Show Episode 29 of Season 4 is HERE!
Every year, the conventional wisdom about getting into college gives way to painful, new truths and exciting, new opportunities. Amy and Mike invited educational consultant Rebecca Stuart-Orlowski to return to the show with admissions notes for the HS graduating class of 2025. What are five things you will learn in this episode? How are colleges and students using AI and AI detectors in college admissions and college essays? Are more colleges requiring test scores this application cycle? If so, why? Why is there a dearth of SAT centers despite more colleges requiring tests, and what can students do about it? How will AP's recalibration of scores influence admissions decisions? Will the FAFSA be a disaster like it was for the Class of 2024? MEET OUR GUEST Rebecca Stuart-Orlowski, founder of Orlowski College Consulting, has worked in education for 35 years and has worked as an Independent Educational Consultant for 10+ years. She has a specialized Certificate in College Counseling from UCSD, a BA in Communicative Disorders from San Diego State, and two active teaching credentials. She taught deaf, LD, and 2E students for four years and was a college counselor at a small private school for 3 years. Rebecca specializes in gifted/2E, STEM, creative, homeschooled, and transfer students. Rebecca first appeared on the podcast in episode 369 to discuss ADMISSIONS NOTES FOR THE CLASS OF 2023 and in episode 526 to discuss ADMISSIONS NOTES FOR THE HS GRADUATING CLASS OF 2024. Les, Kurt, and Jason are angry… or at least Les and Jason are, while Kurt CLAIMS to be zen despite having suffered through the same movie as they did. But first, Kurt reports that Blac Chyna's daughter Dream made a song. But Blac Chyna says it's not a real song since it's not on streaming. Though it could still technically BE a song in the same way that Falling Like Snowflakes was technically a movie because a really bad movie is still a movie. Hallmark got an early start on Christmas in July by premiering the movie in June, which is a really cruel thing to do if this movie is, as the guys suspect, a group project created by some people that have been institutionalized. Through that lens, all those involved really did a good job. Through any other lens, though, this may instead feature people so miserable with their acting careers that they're trying to deliberately sabotage their work to get out of some very unhealthy relationships. If you're looking for a way to sabotage an unhealthy relationship, make sure you watch this movie with the people in your shared unhealthy situation and it will help you end things quick! Live from Holy Spirit High School, host Adam Walsh speaks with students from this year's graduating class. They chat about their high school journeys, what's next and where they hope to head in life.
Mdm Kay Kuok, Chair of the Yale-NUS Governing BoardMembers of the Yale-NUS Governing BoardProfessor Aaron Thean, Deputy President (Academic Affairs) and Provost of NUSProfessor Joanne Roberts, President of Yale-NUS CollegeFamilies, Yale-NUS community, and FriendsAnd dear graduates,Most of you were the class of 2020 in high school, your graduations disrupted by a once in a century pandemic. Today, as the Yale-NUS graduating class of 2024, your lives are mercifully not disrupted. It would however be tone-deaf to not recognize that many graduates in the Middle-East, Ukraine, or the US, won't be enjoying a commencement like yours this year. This is a heavy realisation as we traverse through life. Moments of celebrations and triumph for many are invariably juxtaposed with sorrow, loss, and sadness elsewhere. At your highest highs and lowest lows, know that there are others with a different luck of the draw.Graduates, recognising that life's peaks and valleys are inevitable can be liberating. It underscores the line “nothing lasts forever.” I think it also makes us less self-complacent, less territorial and possessive, more humble, and open to experiencing the next, the other. And perhaps, along those lines, more open to experiments. I want to explore the wisdom of experiments in the rest of this talk.Experiments can be scientific or social, public or personal. You can experiment with a business plan, a critical query, a new diet, a different workout, or just see if hearing someone out could give us an insight not feasible within our experiences.Consider hanging out with students from different majors an experiment. During my graduate school days, that very experiment led me to my life partner. Reach out to those from different religions, political persuasion, culture, or lifestyle, and see if their company and proximity make our lives richer and more joyous. If our mutual humanity can transcend our differences. These are experiments for the rest of your lives. And they will matter more as you delve into higher studies or jobs.If you're a scientist, your vocation is largely about testing hypothesis through experiments, but surely that's not where it ends.America is an experiment. Singapore is an experiment. Yale-NUS has been an experiment.Every new idea's worth is tested through experiments. Is it possible to send humans to the moon and back? Let's experiment, let's try. Is it possible to have a thriving, multicultural, multiracial society? Let's experiment. If it fails, try again. Some pursuits can follow the path of Thomas Edison, noisy and full of stumbles, but at the end, marked by glorious achievements. To paraphrase him, he never failed, he just successfully found the numerous ways that the experiment would not work. Some experiments can be spectacularly successful over a short period of time, thanks to luck, serendipity, or a stroke of genius. I wish you have those, but I also know that for the most you, that will not be the case. My hope is in fact that you leave this campus with the grit necessary to follow Edison's path, and don't shy away from your dreams at the first, second, or even third roadblock.Your exceptionally fortunate time at the Yale-NUS, in my view, has been an experiment of a lifetime. You could have gone to so many other places, but aren't you gratified that you came here? Reflecting on President Roberts's words, this place has hopefully instilled in you the patience, perseverance, and sense of community critically needed to make a difference. This beautiful campus, these dedicated and brilliant faculty, and these amazing facilities have nourished your minds over the past four years. That experiment of liberal arts in the heart of Singapore has been a resounding success. You made that happen. The legacy of this institution will never fade. So, let's embrace uncertainty, let's stand up against the fear of failure, let's move forward, secure in the conviction that your time here has provided you with the values and intellectual mettle to take on the world. We can write down an endless list of woes that afflict our planet; let them be your problems to solve. With your curiosity, empathy, and knowledge, let the experiments begin. Congratulations Class of 2024!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I prepared this podcast last year (2023) but did not get around to posting it until now (2024). It focuses upon the time a few years ago when I was asked to speak to the graduating class. The students were there and their parents. Plus the Chancellor and Deans and other luminaries. It was a really nice event. I did make one mistake. When I came to the campus in 1973 the state of Michigan funded over 80% of our budget. Today it is well under the 25% I mentioned, maybe closer to 15%. An event such as this was not a time to ask for money, but I thought I would plant the seed.

At their worst, graduation speeches are boring, trite, and pedantic. But at their best, they’re touching meditations on what it means to live a purposeful, fulfilling life. On this week’s episode of Apple News In Conversation, host Shumita Basu speaks with commencement-speech connoisseur Cristina Negrut, who has read hundreds of speeches and cataloged many on the website Best Graduation Speeches. This is a preview of their conversation.

Founded in 2019, Unity High School is one of the first Catholic high schools in the south metro and began with a single class of freshman. 2023 is a special year for the school as this will be the year that those freshman graduate (as seniors, of course) in Unity's first graduating class! You may know Matt Birk from his involvement within our local Church and state, as a father of 8 children, or perhaps for his 14-year NFL career. Regardless of how you know him, he's joining us to chat about what he's learned since Unity's founding and what he's looking forward to in the years to come. Featured: Issue 15.3, Nyr Acuavera -Fashion Design Nyr Acuavera, born on April 17, 2002, is a Filipino fashion student at West Valley College. Immigrating to the United States at a young age, Acuavera experienced social isolation from his peers as a result of his personal identity. To flee from the troubles of reality, he turned to escapism in the form of clothing, a theme woven into the breadth of his work. “I've found catharsis in using fashion as my armor,” Nyr states, “impenetrable by judgment nor changed by others. It's the truest form of my inner self.” His work contains a large scope of references, ranging from Ancient Roman literature to early 2010s internet culture. Still early in his career, Nyr Acuavera will be part of West Valley's Graduating Class of 2023, aiming to transfer into a menswear design program. He hopes to open a menswear label one day, showcasing Filipino talent on the world stage. Instagram: notnyr --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/content-magazine/support

Late last week, Paradise High School's Class of 2022 graduated. For the seniors who lived in Paradise and the surrounding area for all of high school, the past four years have been chaotic – to say the least. A few months into their freshman year in 2018, the deadliest fire in California history – the Camp Fire – broke out nearby and spread to their town. And they've also had to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. Guest: Colleen Hagerty, Freelance Journalist based in Los Angeles
