We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2021 conversation with Richard Marx. ABOUT RICHARD MARX:Grammy-winning performer Richard Marx has sold more than 30 million albums as an artist, but if you only know him from late 1980s ballads such as âHold on to the Nightsâ and âRight Here Waiting,â you only know part of the story. A prolific songwriter, Marx has landed fourteen songs at the top of various Billboard charts, and has written a #1 single in each of the last four decades. His genre-crossing songwriting success includes âWhat About Meâ and âCrazy,â which Kenny Rogers carried to the top of the Adult Contemporary and Country charts, respectively; âEdge of a Broken Heart,â a hit for the female metal band Vixen; âThis I Promise You,â a Top 5 pop single for NSYNC that stayed at #1 on the Adult Contemporary Chart for 13 weeks; Josh Groban's debut single âTo Where You Are,â which also reached #1; and âDance With My Father,â which Richard wrote with the song's performer, Luther Vandross, and which earned the pair the prestigious Grammy Song of the Year award in 2004. Additionally, Richard has scored three major hits with Keith Urban: the Top 5 âEverybody,â and the #1 singles âBetter Lifeâ and âLong Hot Summer.â  Despite all his songwriting success, however, Marx is best known as a singer and performer who today jokes about his 80s hairstyle and of-the-era drum sounds. But the songs are undeniable, all of which Marx wrote and produced himself. His debut self-titled album yielded four Top 5 singles: âDon't Mean Nothing,â âShould've Known Better,â âEndless Summer Nights,â and âHold on to the Nights.â His follow-up, 1989's Repeat Offender, was even more successful, going quadruple-platinum and earning two number one Billboard pop singles, âSatisfiedâ and âRight Here Waiting,â in addition to the Top 5 âAngelina.â More hits followed, including âKeep Coming Back,â âHazard,â âTake This Heart,â âNow and Forever,â and âUntil I Find You Again.â In addition, Richard's songs have been integral to a number of successful film soundtracks. He earned a Grammy nomination for his contributions to St. Elmo's Fire; scored a Top 10 pop hit with âSurrender to Me,â which Ann Wilson of Heart and Robin Zander of Cheap Trick recorded for the movie Tequila Sunrise, and wrote âAt the Beginning,â a hit duet for the film Anastasia that Richard performed with Donna Lewis. Over the course of his career, Richard's songs have been recorded by Barbra Streisand, The Tubes, Sarah Brightman, Monica, Natalie Cole, Michael Bolton, Paulina Rubio, Emerson Drive, Chicago, Billy Ray Cyrus, Vince Gill, Kenny Loggins, LeAnn Rimes, Celine Dion, Julio Iglesias, Berry Manilow, Daughtry, Vertical Horizon, Lifehouse, Dave Koz, Jennifer Nettles, Ringo Starr, and many others. His memoir, Stories to Tell, is available from Simon & Shuster.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Send us a textLibby Roderick is a singer, songwriter, and recording artist, who was born in Anchorage just before statehood. Her father Jack Roderick was the last mayor of the borough of Anchorage prior to the unification of the municipality in 1975. Libby recorded her first album in 1990 which included the song, âHow could Anyone,â which has been featured on CNN, CBS, and the Associated Press. Her music has been featured at the U.N. Conference on Women, with Coretta Scott King and Walter Cronkite in Washington D.C., and played on Mars by NASA. Libby has also been the director of the University of Alaska Anchorage's Difficult Dialogues Initiative since 2006; through that initiative she has helped reinforce and protect civil discourse at centers of higher learning and beyond. According to former UAA Chancellor and governor of Alaska Sean Parnell: âLibby's work is a critical keystone in the university's service to students and to Alaska. The democracy-threatening polarization of the American public, social media's influence on our inability to find common ground, and the difficult but necessary discussions related to human dignity and educational access have combined to maker her leadership paramount to meeting the mission to the university.âÂ

I met Max Gomez at a show he played in my hometown. It was a solo acoustic show, and I was really blown away by his songs. They have a casual, and intimate feel. I knew I wanted to have him on my show and we finally worked out a time in his busy touring schedule. His songwriting incorporates some of the best elements of folk and country music. He weaves tales, explores heartbreak, and leaves you with a keen sense of the subjects in his songs. We had a great chat about his news album which is out now. You should go listen to it. After you enjoy this podcast. I hope you dig it!Â

A live recording and chat with Aoife Barry from our recent Listening Party for Jeff Buckley's Grace (1994) at the Big Romance in Dublin. One of the '90s most revered albums, Grace is an astonishing debut LP from the American singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley. Sadly, it was to be his only album as he tragically died three years later but the album is considered a classic for its wide-ranging, reaching vocals (Buckley's voice spanned four octaves), its resonant melding of rock, folk, soul and jazz and songs of intensity, beauty and grandeur including of course, the definitive cover of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah', along with songs like 'Lover, You Should've Come Over', 'Mojo Pin', and 'Grace'. Baroque, sweeping, poetic, soulâbaring, biblical, elemental and melodramatic Grace is considered one of the best debut albums of all time, and generally just one of the best records of all time. The high drama of his life imbues Buckley's songs with a level of intensity and singular weight It's no wonder that it's an album that teenagers are still discovering today. We discuss the record in front of a live Listen Closely audience.  Listen on Apple | Android  | Patreon | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS Feed | Pod.Link

As the first African American staff songwriter at Stax, Porter, along with his partner, wrote and produced songs such as âB-A-B-Yâ for Carla Thomas, âYour Good Thing (Is About to End)ââan R&B hit for Mable John that later became a pop and R&B smash for Lou Rawls, and his own recording of âCan't See You When I Want To.â Hayes and Porter are best known, however, for their work with Sam & Dave, including such classic hits as âYou Don't Know Like I Know,â âYou Got Me Hummin',â âHold On! I'm Comin'â (which later became a country hit for Waylon Jennings and Jerry Reed), âSoul Manâ (which became a hit a second time thanks to the Blues Brothers), âI Thank Youâ (which was later covered by ZZ Top), and âWhen Something is Wrong with My Babyâ (which was reimagined as a memorable duet between Otis Redding and Carla Thomas, a country hit for Sonny James, and an adult contemporary hit for Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville). The list of artists who've covered Porter's songs includes Aretha Franklin, Bruce Springsteen, William Bell, Melissa Ethridge, Bonnie Raitt, Garth Brooks, Etta James, Celine Dion, Wilson Pickett, George Benson, Dusty Springfield, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Staple Singers, Solomon Burke, James Brown, Eric Clapton, B. B. King, Tina Turner, Jackie Wilson, and more. His songs have been used as samples in countless recordings by artists such as Jay-Z, Eminem, Wu-Tang Clan, The Notorious B.I.G., Justin Bieber, Mariah Carey, and others. A highly celebrated giant among celebrated songwriters, Porter was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Pop star, singer-songwriter, and powerhouse vocalist Chloe Stroll joins Jrodconcerts for a candid conversation about her journey to her debut album, Bloom in the Break. We dive into Chloe's deep love for Whitney Houston and how the iconic star, alongside Celine Dion, inspired her to pursue her "big ballads" despite not having a professional musician in the family. Chloe shares stories of being "born a performer," trading Disney costumes for a microphone at her parents' dinner parties, and the connection she found in bringing people together through music. Chloe reveals the daunting task of writing over 70 songs and the process of paring them down to the dozen tracks that make up her full-spectrum album, Bloom in the Break. The album showcases her gift for "incisive, yet compassionate lyrics and her strong voice," offering comfort and relatability through tracks like the spectral âThin Airâ and the grand ballad âHome.â We also discuss her personal evolution, including the surprising pivot to music after completing business school and embarking on another career path in 2020. Chloe opens up about life's major milestonesâher marriage to Olympic medalist Scotty James in 2023 (and their relationship story) and navigating motherhood in music after having her baby in 2024. Hear how Chloe uses "music to heal" and how she translated real-time emotionâeven terrifying moments, as depicted in "Run"âinto her art. British singer-songwriter dodie has spent half her life in public. Long before algorithms and engagement metrics ruled the day, she began posting homemade songs and videos on YouTube as a teenager from Essex. Her soft voice, self-effacing humor, and unfiltered honesty drew millions of viewers who watched her grow up onlineâsharing heartbreaks, mental-health struggles, and moments of joy in real time. Fifteen years later, that same authenticity anchors her second album, Not For Lack of Trying (Decca / Verve), a project that finds her looking inward with more clarity and balance than ever. Produced with Joe Rubel, the record feels both intimate and expansive, blending hushed guitars, clarinets, and a subtle electronic pulse beneath lyrics about healing, boundaries, and learning to feel okay. Here she talks about what it means to grow up online, how she learned to protect her private life, and the long road to emotional equilibrium. She opens up about the strange feedback loop of being praised for her pain, the decision to step back from constant posting, and the discovery that medication, therapy, and time have finally helped her feel âa bit better.â She discusses the making of Not For Lack of Trying, her collaboration with friends like Greta Isaac and producer Joe Rubel, and the sonic choices that define her sound - the low rumble of drop-tuned guitars and the warmth of analog synths supporting a voice that seems to hover just above the mix. âWhen I'm writing,â she says, âI'm not aiming for how it sounds. I'm aiming for how it feelsâI just want to get goosebumps.â Along the way, dodie reflects on the evolution from being a âspecial girlâ with a ukulele and a webcam to becoming a full-fledged artist with more than a billion streams, seven million followers, and a place on Forbes' 30 Under 30 list. Through it all, she's still trying, still curious, still kind, still chasing that feeling. www.third-story.com www.substack.leosidran.com www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story

Her latest album, A Piece of Infinity, finds Meklit singing mostly in Amharic, and looking back to what is sometimes called the Golden Age of Ethiopian music â the time in the early 70s when Latin music, American funk, and traditional Ethiopian scales and rhythms all came together. Liz LongleyTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Nashville based artist Liz Longley. In this episode, Liz and I chat about her being born & raised in Pennsylvania, not far from where Taylor grew up, and how there MUST be something in the water in that area! Then we get into some of the reasons behind her attending; as well as some of the thigs that she learned at The Berkley School of Music. We touch very briefly on her similarly brief NYC residence, before she packed her guitar and her song book, and headed for the much more apt Nashville. Of course, I get her to explain a musical concept that I only recently learned about, and it turns out that it is her favorite musicology term! Then we talk about her music. Liz has released SEVEN albums! I pepper her with questions about some of my favorites of her work, and the meaning behind them. Naturally, I ask her about her two Kickstarter campaigns. In 2012, Liz launched a Kickstarter campaign designed to help her finance a studio album. By the end of the campaign, she has raised 157% of her goal. The resulting record that she made, landed her a record deal with Sugar Hill Records! We discuss a bit of her time at that record company, and how her exit from it transpired. Sadly, when she left the record company, they had received & shelved her latest album. So, she turned once again, to her backers at Kickstarter. Her 2020 Kickstarter campaign had a goal to raise enough funds to PURCHASE the finished album from the record company. The campaign met the stated goal in the first 24 hours and went on to raise 333% of the financial goal; making that one of the biggest musician campaigns ever funded on the platform. She used the extra funds to create TWO more records! Liz was a blast to chat with, and she even let me play two of her songs that I absolutely love. PLUS, we get together to come up with an amazing offer for the listeners of this episode. Liz will send every listener a FREE CD EP (just pay shipping)! Click the link below to get that FREE CD! Make sure you follow her on all of the social medias, and check her website for tour dates near you. At the time of this recording, Liz was about 8.75 months pregnant with her second child. That baby was born less than 2 weeks ago! Congratulations Liz and welcome Connor to the world!Link to FREE CD (Just pay shipping)B) FSH Sales Page #1 â Liz Longley
