Amputating a limb should be a last resort, but people in lower socioeconomic groups as well as African Americans are up to four times as likely to undergo an amputation than white Americans, according to Dr. Mehdi Shishehbor, president of the University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute. We will begin Wednesday's “Sound of Ideas” talking to a Shishebor, who is considered a pioneer in limb preservation. Later in the show, we will talk to the Cavaliers organization about its upcoming “Bow Tie Night.” The annual event will be held March 2 at Rocket Arena where the Cavaliers will play the Portland Trail Blazers.
Reverend and Dr. Don J. Tynes cares so much for his patients. He will drive them across the State of Michigan if need-be to prevent amputation for those suffering in advanced stages of peripheral artery disease, known as Critical Limb Ischemia. He knows it's possible for doctors to at least try to open up arteries below the knee, but he has discovered that so many physicians tell patients it can't be done. He doesn't settle for that. He strives to ensure his patients have all options exhausted to save their limbs before an amputation is considered. He shares what sparked his passion for limb salvage and led him to become a medical missionary for patients with poor leg circulation. #peripheralarterydisease #padsupport #pvdsupport #peripheralvasculardisease #CLI #globalpadassociation

Long time listeners of the show will be very familiar with todays guest, Andy Ross. Andy is an artist, a hunter and outdoorsman, always delivering with an epic story. The last 6-9 months however have been immensely challenging for Andy, to say the very least. Back in August, 2024, he underwent a lower leg amputation, removing a quarter of his right leg between the ankle and the knee. Gilman Marston,(1811-1890), a staunch supporter of President Abraham Lincoln and the Union Civil War effort reached the rank of Brigadier-General in the Union Army. His arm was shattered at the First Battle of Bull Run 1861. He refused amputation and later fought in all of the major battles of the Eastern Theatre (his brigade suffered heavy losses at the 1864 Battle of Cold Harbor).
In the US, there are over 150,000 lower extremity amputations each year, adding up to 300-500 amputations per day. Over half of amputations are due to vascular causes, and those who experience this type of amputation are at higher risk for various complications, including higher mortality rates. Given these statistics, it is of optimal importance for us as rehabilitation professionals to take on a multifaceted approach from the beginning, and focus on giving our patients the tools to continue on with healthy habits and continued mobility when they leave our care. Physical and Occupational therapy professionals play an integral role in improving the lives and outcomes of those who have experienced lower extremity amputation, and through this podcast you will learn some valuable information for your toolkit to improve functional success when working with this population. A man in England got three years of jail time for selling firesticks so people could illegally watch Premier League soccer (football). Susie shares the origins of the photo finish, how a horse once won because of a thread of saliva, the limits of accuracy, and how it relates to the Hawkeye system in tennis that determines whether a ball is in or out of bounds. The Catechism looks at matters relating to scientific research, bodily integrity, and the dead with the lens of the dignity of the human person. Fr. Mike helps us navigate the Catechism's teachings by acknowledging science and technology as a good while emphasizing restrictions and conditions to ensure respect for the dignity of persons. Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 2292-2301.
