On his daily First 10 podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey reacts to the Pirates' latest loss Tuesday to the St. Louis Cardinals. He ponders another strong start from Bailey Falter; three hits for Nick Yorke in his MLB debut; manager Derek Shelton's curious decision to pinch hit Yasmani Grandal for Billy Cook late in the game; the disturbing surge of stolen bases allowed to opposing runners; and what it all means in the big picture. How has the team crashed so hard since the July 30 MLB trade deadline? And can they even match their 2023 win total by playing decent baseball over the final couple of weeks? Jason answers those questions, then turns attention to the Steelers. Why should there be no controversy at QB this week with Justin Fields likely starting in NFL Week 3 against the Los Angeles Chargers, as Russell Wilson continues to navigate his injury? And will Broderick Jones get another chance at tackle from coach Mike Tomlin?

On his daily First 10 podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey reacts to the Pirates' 12-2 thumping of the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday. Why does this offense perform so inconsistently? And can it put things together in time for a run before the MLB All-Star break? What should we make of Quinn Priester's strong outing? Is he finally starting to show why he was a first-round pick? Or does he still have a lot to prove? And does Joey Bart deserve more playing time after his grand slam and amid struggles by Yasmani Grandal and Henry Davis? Jason tackles those questions and also offers some things to watch for as the Penguins wrap up their development camp with a scrimmage in Cranberry.
On today's episode of First 10, Jason Mackey discusses what the Pirates need to see out of Jack Suwinski after Tuesday night's performance, why they continue to play Yasmani Grandal, and where he'd like to see them go with the catching situation. Mackey also touches on the Penguins adding Sebastian Aho, needing to get a winger and what looks to be a daunting schedule.
On his daily First 10 podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey reacts the Pirates' victory against the Reds on Tuesday in Cincinnati. Can they use it as a springboard to a winning streak that would help them greatly in their MLB playoff race for an NL wild card spot? Or will the inconsistency of players like Yasmani Grandal and Michael A. Taylor prevent that? Did Mitch Keller prove that he's just fine after some slips from his dominant May? And can Henry Davis finally prove he belongs at the MLB level as he starts a minor league rehab assignment with the Altoona Curve? Jason tackles those questions, offers his thoughts on an ESPN article that ranks the Steelers' starters 18th in the NFL and reacts to the announcement of the next Hockey Hall of Fame class.

With both not seeing the division as a juggernaut what does that mean for each team currently? Fort also talks a bit about his new Podcast "Hold My Cutter" with Greg Brown.
