In this edition of Madison Book Beat, host Andrew Thomas speaks with Steven Duong on his debut poetry collection At the End of the World There is A Pond (Norton 2025)."Tell all the truth but tell it slant." Taking Emily Dickinson's dictum as a guiding principle, poet Steven Duong delivers a collection startlingly clear, formally innovative, and consistently funny. At the End of the World There is a Pond is divided into four sections–The Jumpers, The Swimmers, The Sinkers, The Floaters--and throughout each Duong explores themes of addiction, mental health, climate change, diaspora, and popular culture.from "Anatomy":“there's no / point in writing nature poems anymore, / not unless you drown the verses in smoke / & oil & organophosphates–the Anthropocene / demands a new syntax” Steven Duong is a writer from San Diego. His poems have appeared in the American Poetry Review, Guernica, and the Yale Review, among other publications, and his short fiction is featured in Catapult, The Drift, and The Best American Short Stories 2024.The recipient of fellowships and awards from the Academy of American Poets and the Iowa Writers' Workshop, he is currently a creative writing fellow in poetry at Emory University. Welcome to our 6th iteration of the Black Girl's Guide to Surviving Menopause podcast: the Season of Orisii. Building on our international diasporic tour from last year, this season's theme is Orisii, or 'pairs' in the Afric language of Yoruba. We've invited different types of pairs to explore the through-line between menarche and menopause. You will hear parent/child, partner/lovers and siblings to offer their reflections and observations about this journey as individual and as Orisii. We, as people capable of menstruation, understand that each experience is unique and impacts both ourselves and the connections we have with our loved ones. For this third episode of our Season of Orisii, we have sisters adrienne maree brown and Autumn Brown. Opening portals, multiverse traveling companions, and life beyond the end of the world: How can we stay grounded in the present moment, in this reality of constant change, decay, death, and rebirth, without feeling completely overwhelmed? And then what? Surviving the various challenges within ourselves and in the world while navigating the transition between our changing identities of past, present, and future selves, all while supporting each other and remembering our individual needs. What if we redefined "self-centered" to mean the preservation of all aspects of ourselves, young, older, fragile, strong for iterative healing? These are some of the themes and questions we explored with the Sisters Brown, adrienne, and Autumn on this episode and we can't think of a better way to kick off Black August during our Season of Orisii. Black August is a time of year to honor our Black freedom fighters, political prisoners, and resistance against oppression via study, fasting, training and fighting. It is the antithesis of “celebration” and empty “homage.” Black August commemoration and practice place our collective struggle and sacrifice on center stage. More on the why of Black August here, detailed by the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement. Meet adrienne and Autumn: adrienne maree brown grows healing ideas in public through her multi-genre writing, her collaborations and her podcasts. Informed by 25 years of movement facilitation, somatics, Octavia E. Butler scholarship and her work as a doula, adrienne has nurtured Emergent Strategy, Pleasure Activism, Radical Imagination and Transformative Justice as ideas and practices for transformation. She is the author/editor of several published texts, co-generator of a tarot deck and a developing musical ritual. adrienne's forthcoming book Loving Corrections will be released on August 20 from AK Press. Autumn Brown is a musician, facilitator, and author of speculative fiction and creative non-fiction. As the front woman of the eponymous band, AUTUMN, she has created two EPs, The Animal in You and The Way Your Blood Beats. Her writing has been featured in Revolutionary Mothering, Parenting 4 Social Justice, Octavia's Brood, and Lightspeed Magazine. She co-hosts the podcast How to Survive the End of the World, and facilitates political education and movement strategy through the Anti-Oppression Resource and Training Alliance. When it comes to the A Quiet Place franchise we kept coming back to one big question: What are the biological factors that would allow these terrifying aliens who terrorize Earth to hunt via sound alone? The aliens, often referred to as “dark angels” in the films, have a number of distinct characteristics which will inform our questions. For starters, they're blind but incredibly sensitive to sound, which gives them an instinct to kill everything that emits the slightest noise. They are also incredibly strong and fast and they possess armored skin which protects them from most kinds of weapons, including bombs and fire. The only ways to kill them (so far) are to drop them into deep water (since they can't swim) or by emitting high-frequency sound which causes the armor on their heads to open and expose their only vulnerable part: their ears. In this episode we will dive into how this alien echolocation differs from what we see in animals native to our planet, and the environmental factors that might have contributed to how and why these creatures evolved as they did. And then there are all the story elements to consider, from the sound design (and lack thereof) of the films themselves, the question of childbirth in a world where uttering a sound can get you killed, and much more. Oh yeah, and then you might want to find out who from the film thought this movie should have been called Don't Fart. It's all fair game in Does it Fly? episode 12!SUGGESTED VIEWINGThis episode is FULL OF SPOILERS, don't say we didn't warn you! So, we'd recommend you watch both A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place Part II. Keep in mind, we recorded this episode without having seen A Quiet Place Day One (in theaters now), so there's no spoilers for that film. And if you've seen the entire franchise and still need this creepy itch scratched, when watching A Quiet Place, Hakeem also thought about the 2018 film Bird Box (you can find it on Netflix) starring Sandra Bullock, where the threat is sight instead of sound—if you see the force extinguishing humans, you die. It's kind of creepy, but definitely a good horror watch before going to bed!FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Here are a few recommendations!Echolocation“Let's talk about the anatomy of these aliens... They are big and strong. Their limbs are incredibly long and at the end they have these claw-like hands... Their heads are made of these plates that open to reveal the fleshy parts underneath. But their exoskeleton and the plates on their head, those things are virtually impenetrable. So, in order to kill it, what they've discovered is, is that with the right high frequency pitch... The monster just freaks out all the plates, opens on his head, making it vulnerable, and then they can take it out.” See also: Engaging Silence: Behind the Daring Sound of A Quiet PlaceHearing in Cockroaches, Spiders, Elephants and Other AnimalsHow Cockroaches Experience the World“There are some animals that use air movements [to listen]. One of my favorites is one of my least favorites… I was a kid in New Orleans. And if you live in New Orleans, especially in the 1970s, you have to deal with a monster even scarier than the one in this movie… They're called roaches.” See also: Do Cockroaches have ears? The Earth's terminator Line“There's that ring that separates the light side from the dark side, what we call the terminator in astronomy. And at the terminator [on planets that do not rotate] there will always be incredibly strong winds. So you will need something like those big claw hands to just sit there against those winds.” See also: The Moon's Terminator LineProject Hail Mary“Andy Weir, who wrote The Martian which then became a movie with Matt Damon, also wrote Project Hail Mary, which I don't want to give too much of it away, but… a big part of the book is trying to figure out and understand the aliens' background [and] the kind of world that they come from.” How A Quiet Place Sound Designers Made Audiences Afraid of Their Own Noise“Ethan Van der Ryn and Erik Aadahl, who were actually nominated for an Oscar for sound editing for the first film… said: ”By working on scary films as sound designers, we can become the puppet masters of the audience's emotions in an invisible way as opposed to the image. A great picture editor, Walter Marsh, had this wonderful saying along the lines of ‘images come in through the front door, but sound comes in through the back door'.” WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY? The lesson is obvious. True missionaries concentrate on doing the work of Mark 16:15 rather than operating social-welfare programs. True missionaries serve the message of Christ, not the institutions of the church. K.P. Yohannan, Come, Let’s Reach the World There are two ways that… Continue Reading "The Work of Mark 16"

The Billionaire Lifestyle 30 podcasts in 30 days - Day 2 Breaking Bad Habits Making Good Habits Most Habits are not learned overnight. Everything we learn starts with the smallest component. When we learn to walk, ride a bike or speak it is a time-consuming effort. The same is with habits, bad and good. Learning a new trait may be considered good temporarily, but as time progresses the trait acquired may turn ugly and unnecessary. Here is a list of bad habits you may identify with: Smoking Cursing/swearing (my favorite indulge) talking out of turn. obsessive eating poor health habits procrastination watching too much television Facebook, twitter, etc Mobile phone scanning vaping (guilty) shopping (retail Therapy) eating with your mouth open Talking on the mobile phone in public like you are in private Tardiness Chasing money with no goal. As we look forward into the future and can clearly see our impending doom isn't it basic human curiosity to wonder how you might kill time during an apocalypse. In this episode Chris and Jerry delve into the subject as we ponder how we might spend or last days/months/years on earth. What's the best apocalyptic scenario to endure? This Is The End, duh. Go Franco! And oh, yeah, that movie X-men Apocalypse. X-Men Apocalypse Did we enjoy the movie? At this point who the hell cares. X-men was just another character heavy movie by Bryan Singer that does very little to showcase the depth its characters and importance of the X-men to the Marvel Universe. To put it simply: keep it simple. Make a movie about the X-men and leave out the exposition. We’ve been there, done that, and now we’re just tired. Sure you can show us Jubilee in a cameo, but why should we care? You messed up Wolverine Origins and so why not throw in Weapon X. It’s all an fare and it’s now recently been proven that the viewing public just doesn’t care any more. Singer has run his course as director of this franchise and until they dump him and widen their narrow view of what we the public/fans need to see of the X-men, Fox may as well close the chapter on attempting to make money off the X-men and focus on making better movies in general. Justice League Movie Title I saw this article which mentioned Warner Bros. were close to releasing the exact title to the Justice League Movie. At the time of this recording the title of the movie was Justice League: Part One, but after some fact checking we discovered the title to be Justice League. That’s right Justice League. Ain’t it Cool article: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/75372 Batman: The Animated Series One of the best Batman interpretation ever made was Batman: The Animated Series. If you have never see the episode, watch the Heart of Ice. This is a touch character story of one of Batman’s more infamous foes Mr. Freeze. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loiQi3aDc8c&feature=youtu.be Cormac McCarthy’s, The Road On the subject of worse case scenarios, we delve into The Road, by Cormac McCarthy. A man and his child struggle to stay alive in an apocalyptic world where dead is a blessing and living is a curse. “Death is a luxury." How do you motivate yourself to live when there is no hope? Humans have a nature instinct to survive but when there is no hope why is it that some people will be able to forge and find that little bit of hope to help motivate them to live. Are there any good guys in an Apocalypse? There can be no good people during a Apocalypse. No matter how righteous you are, when you are fighting to live — even if you kill to protect — you are not good. Righteous Quote: "There’s No Good or Evil at the End of the World There is only You" Righteous Quote:" A legend is what you do and not who you are." Fallout with Chris 34:34 How Do You Kill Time During An Apocalypse, really? Seriously, we do not know. It all depends on the scenario. Whether it's by nuclear war, a natural disaster, or The Rapture. We can prepare ourselves for whats to come until we're thrust into that position of "I must live." Prepare all you want. Start collecting canned goods now but we are not truly prepared until the moment becomes real and our true survival instinct kick in and define who we are when the apocalypse is upon us.
