In Rwanda's Genocide Heritage: Between Justice and Sovereignty (Duke UP, 2025), Delia Duong Ba Wendel contends with the forms of justice and sovereignty enacted through sites of violent memory. Drawing from oral histories and a visual archive of memory work after the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, she explores the human rights and government priorities that preserved killing sites and victims' remains for public display. Rwanda's genocide memorials exemplify a global phenomenon that Wendel terms trauma heritage, wherein hidden or unrecognized violence is spatialized--made visible in public space--to demand justice and recognition. She argues that trauma heritage innovates on the form histories take by "writing" them into landscapes, constituting a reparative historiography from the Global South. Among those sites, Rwanda's genocide heritage comprises exceptionally visceral sites of truth-telling that highlight the politics of a past made present. Wendel demonstrates that such sites of memory require reckoning with the ethical and political dilemmas that arise from viewing violence as forms of repair and control. Ústředním tématem je mezigenerační rozdíl vnímání světa, kdy se první generace přistěhovalců drží tradic, zatímco mladší „1,5“ a druhá generace hledají rovnováhu mezi českou kulturou a svými kořeny. Hosté zdůrazňují absolutní prioritu rodinné soudržnosti, hluboký respekt ke starším a zásadní význam vzdělání, do kterého vietnamské rodiny investují maximum prostředků.

Was macht uns wirklich resilient? From the rise to the downfall — we unpack how the Duong family built influence in San Leandro politics and trace Azevedo's wild ride: from the infamous "community freezer locker" idea, an inability to speak a human language, to the federal charges that brought everything crashing down. What does this scandal mean for San Leandro's future? Who might fill his vacant council seat? Plus, we dive into the aftermath of Prop. 50, ask whether there's a Zohran Mamdani emerging in the East Bay, and track the buzz around Eric Swalwell's rumored run for governor.

So This Is My Why

When Vietnamese refugee Senh Duong fled after the fall of Saigon, he could never have imagined he'd one day co-found one of the most influential movie sites in the world - Rotten Tomatoes.A kid who grew up on Hong Kong kung fu flicks, Senh was obsessed with Jackie Chan. So when Jackie tried to break into Hollywood again, Senh went looking for honest reviews... But couldn't find any. Every critic said the movies were great (even when they weren't).So Senh decided to build a site that told the truth. What began as a side project coded through sleepless nights turned into a cultural phenomenon - one that raised $1 million (2 months before the dot com bubble burst!!), sold for $10 million, and changed how audiences everywhere judge movies. In this episode, Senh opens up about:

In this special episode, contemporary artists Hoa Dung Clerget and Duong Thuy Nguyen, and gallerist Sarah Le Quang Sang, join EMPIRE LINES live, exploring the legacies of French and British colonialism in East Asia, fifty years since the end of the Vietnam War, through the series, If They Survive, They are Refugees (2024).Marking 50 years since the end of the Vietnam War, Only Your Name (2025) is a group exhibition featuring works by artists of Vietnamese descent: Hoa Dung Clerget, Vicky Đỗ, and Duong Thuy Nguyen. The exhibition follows the journey of Vietnamese people migrating to the UK from 1975 onwards, preserving history through a Vietnamese lens and reflecting on the contemporary diaspora. In this special episode, recorded live at SLQS Gallery in London, gallerist Sarah Le Quang Song discusses the particular location of the exhibition, close to Hackney's Kingsland Road, also known as the ‘Pho Mile', where many Vietnamese families settled from the late 1970s. We discuss the title, which draws from On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous (2019), a novel by Ocean Vuong, written in the form of a letter from a Vietnamese American son to his illiterate mother.Duong Thuy Nguyen describes the process of making their embossed aluminium and wax sculptures, which reinterpret Joan Wakelin's photographs of Vietnamese refugees held in Hong Kong detention centres and refugee camps, now held in the collections of the V&A in London. Hoa Dung Clerget presents installations and sculptural works that consider the labour and lives of immigrant women through Nail Art subculture, distorting stereotypical and fetishised portrayals of Asian women. Drawing on their work, Chinoiserie (2025), Hoa shares examples of orientalism in East Asian art and education systems. Plus, we discuss Vicky Đỗ's documentary films, revisiting the history of Vietnamese refugees arriving in Hong Kong. This episode was recorded live as part of the public programme for Only Your Name, an exhibition at SLQS Gallery in London, in July 2025.For more information, visit: instagram.com/p/DLhGFqCIhNA/Womb of Fire 2025, curated by Tuong Linh, opens in Hanoi in October 2025, and tours to Ho Chi Minh City until January 2026.Interspecies Entanglements, curated by Florence Fitzgerald-Allsopp, is at the SLQS Screening Room online until February 2026. A thousand facets sits with Yen Duong before her showing at Goldsmith's fair week one, to talk about her experiences as a child, her love for art and how a visit to a science museum igniting the voice she has now. About: When I was 7 years old I experienced the eternal bond that jewellery can create with memories. My family and I were forced to flee our homeland of Vietnam as political refugees. We could take little with us on that perilous boat journey to Hong Kong and we chose our most precious possessions - family photos and jewellery which I've treasured ever since. To this day that jewellery connects me back with those childhood memories, loved ones and places for which I'm eternally grateful. That chapter of my life made me embrace the value of memories and the simple things in life. Maintaining that sense of joy and gratitude for the everyday lead to creating intricate, beautiful pieces from the raw materials around me and jewellery making became my creative outlet. At The Sir John Cass School of Art, London I learnt to push the boundaries of creativity and innovation with traditional skills. In the process of experimenting with structural complexity in movement, I developed the foundations for my Molecule Design Structure along with my creative expression.
