Remember the late '80s when thrash metal was roaring through the underground, just waiting to explode? Those were the days when Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax were solidifying their places as the big four of thrash. But amidst these giants, bands like Paradox were carving their unique paths with blistering riffs and complex compositions that sometimes flew under the radar. If you're the type of metalhead who loves to dig through the crates at your local record store, hoping to stumble upon something you might have missed, then Paradox's 1989 release “Heresy” is the treasure you've been looking for.Paradox formed in Würzburg, Germany, in 1986, led by the dynamic duo of Charlie Steinhauer and Alex Blaha. Initially part of a cover band paying homage to acts like Overkill and Venom, they quickly transitioned to creating their original sound. By 1987, they had inked a deal with Roadrunner Records, a label synonymous with underground metal. Their debut, “Product of Imagination,” set the stage, but it was their sophomore effort, “Heresy,” that really made waves in the metal community.Imagine discovering an album purely by accident on a metal blog, where a quick 30-second sample convinces you that you've struck gold. That's precisely what happened when Tim stumbled upon “Heresy.” This album is a masterclass in thrash, delivering the speed, technical prowess, and raw energy defining the genre while infusing progressive elements that set it apart. From the opening acoustic strains that segue into ferocious thrash anthems, “Heresy” grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go. Tracks like “Kill Time” showcase the band's insane technical skills, with 30-second note melodies played at breakneck speeds. It's not just about speed and aggression; Paradox brings a level of musicianship and melody often lost in thrash's chaos.A standout track, “Search for Perfection,” features harmonized leads that are as captivating as they are complex. These guys aren't just about playing fast; they're about playing smart, weaving intricate guitar lines that demand repeat listens to appreciate fully. The tracks “Heresy” and “700 Years On” blend the historical narrative with relentless riffs, creating a listening experience that's both intellectually and sonically stimulating. What makes “Heresy” particularly fascinating is its concept. The album delves into the Albigensian Crusade of the 13th century, a campaign initiated by Pope Innocent III to eradicate Catharism in southern France. This historical depth adds a layer of intrigue, making the lyrics worth diving into despite their rapid-fire delivery. The production, handled by Harris Johns (known for his work with Celtic Frost, Kreator, and Sodom), ensures that every note and beat hits with precision and power. No wonder this album still sounds fresh today, able to stand toe-to-toe with modern thrash releases. The band's journey didn't end with “Heresy.” After a hiatus, they returned in 2000 with “Collision Course” and have since released several albums, including “Heresy II: End of a Legend” in 2021. While line-up changes have been frequent, Charlie Steinhauer remains the driving force, keeping the spirit of Paradox alive and thrashing. So next time you're flipping through vinyl, keep an eye out for “Heresy.” Whether a $32 import or a hidden gem in the bargain bin, it's a worthy addition to any thrash aficionado's collection. And if you're still on the fence, take a listen on your preferred streaming platform. This is thrash metal at its finest, and it might just become your new favorite discovery.Songs In This EpisodeIntro - Heresy 15:29 - Killtime 16:55 - Search for Perfection 21:01 - Castle in the Wind 24:47 - Massacre of the Cathars 27:26 - 700 Years On Outro - Crusaders RevengeMake Your Metal Voice Heard! In our quest to explore the depths of 80s metal, we rely on you, our listeners. When we spend the finite time of our lives angry, hurt, or offended, we're missing windows of opportunity that we could be living our purpose and loving our life. When you have the opportunity to take offense, DON'T DO IT. Every minute you spend with feelings of negativity is a minute that you are not living your purpose. You can never get those minutes back. We each get 1,440 minutes every day. When they're gone, they're gone forever. So instead of squandering time, let's invest it! When you invest time in helping someone else, you move into your purpose, you make someone else feel better, and you make yourself feel better. This is a much better, higher way to live than in the gutter of negative emotions. Living your purpose every day for the rest of your life is your antidote to depression, sadness, despair and all the problems that can be associated with those things. Living your purpose is real success, and it includes healthy relationships with good people, peace, joy, wellness, financial stability and a sense of contentedness that cannot be attained any way other than through living your purpose. So please listen every week as we continue to move toward finding and living the purpose for which you were born and perfectly matched. Christian receives a mysterious hand gesture from a concerned citizen but manages to decipher it. We also ponder the age old question - what's the difference between 'tips' and 'advice'? Christian's psych definitely got it wrong when asked about travel tips. This conversation devolves into Christian and Dion bullying Josh for having the audacity to talk to his friends about things that he is passionate about. Dion tells us his strategies for picking an aisle when he needs to traverse through the chemist. We also discuss what we love to browse in the pharmacy while waiting for our script. In this series thus far, Jonny Ardavanis has covered the themes of work, laziness, rest and sabbath. In the final episode of this short series, Jonny will examine the believer's responsibility to “redeem” their time. In Ephesians 5:15, Paul details that one of the predominant ways the believer evidences the transformation that has taken place in their life is how they steward their time. In this episode Jonny examines both the “why?” and the “how?” of redeeming our time.Watch VideosVisit the Website Follow on InstagramFollow on Twitter

Another late episode, because, fuck it, I move on my time. I can say I'll do better, but I don't know. It is what it is. Near the end of STS-125, NASA’s final space shuttle mission to the Hubble Space Telescope back in 2009, bad weather in Florida initially stopped the seven-member team from returning to Earth. The two-day delay that followed presented the astronauts with some unusual but much needed downtime. So what did they do with it? Looked out the windows. “I liked to listen to music and watch the world go by,” said Megan McArthur, a mission specialist on the Space Shuttle Atlantis. “It was pretty awesome.” For our new project, Power Up, we're asking fascinating people to explain how they set themselves up for success while living in (and, in this case, off of) an exhausting world. McArthur told us about the seemingly difficult task of relaxing in outer space. She also described her role in helping the American Girl doll company create Luciana, a Chilean-American who is an aspiring astronaut. “It helps for people to see a role model who represents them, right?” McArthur said of Luciana. “[Someone] who looks like them, maybe who has a similar experience as they have, in order for them to imagine themselves in that same kind of environment.” McArthur described her own experience meeting a role model: astronaut Sally Ride, who McArthur says she met when she was 16 years old. She says the 20-minute conversation with Ride, the first American woman to travel to space, was “a special and unique experience for someone just starting to think about what they want to do with their life.”Tell us how you power up!

As we look forward into the future and can clearly see our impending doom isn't it basic human curiosity to wonder how you might kill time during an apocalypse. In this episode Chris and Jerry delve into the subject as we ponder how we might spend or last days/months/years on earth. What's the best apocalyptic scenario to endure? This Is The End, duh. Go Franco! And oh, yeah, that movie X-men Apocalypse. X-Men Apocalypse Did we enjoy the movie? At this point who the hell cares. X-men was just another character heavy movie by Bryan Singer that does very little to showcase the depth its characters and importance of the X-men to the Marvel Universe. To put it simply: keep it simple. Make a movie about the X-men and leave out the exposition. We’ve been there, done that, and now we’re just tired. Sure you can show us Jubilee in a cameo, but why should we care? You messed up Wolverine Origins and so why not throw in Weapon X. It’s all an fare and it’s now recently been proven that the viewing public just doesn’t care any more. Singer has run his course as director of this franchise and until they dump him and widen their narrow view of what we the public/fans need to see of the X-men, Fox may as well close the chapter on attempting to make money off the X-men and focus on making better movies in general. Justice League Movie Title I saw this article which mentioned Warner Bros. were close to releasing the exact title to the Justice League Movie. At the time of this recording the title of the movie was Justice League: Part One, but after some fact checking we discovered the title to be Justice League. That’s right Justice League. Ain’t it Cool article: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/75372 Batman: The Animated Series One of the best Batman interpretation ever made was Batman: The Animated Series. If you have never see the episode, watch the Heart of Ice. This is a touch character story of one of Batman’s more infamous foes Mr. Freeze. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loiQi3aDc8c&feature=youtu.be Cormac McCarthy’s, The Road On the subject of worse case scenarios, we delve into The Road, by Cormac McCarthy. A man and his child struggle to stay alive in an apocalyptic world where dead is a blessing and living is a curse. “Death is a luxury." How do you motivate yourself to live when there is no hope? Humans have a nature instinct to survive but when there is no hope why is it that some people will be able to forge and find that little bit of hope to help motivate them to live. Are there any good guys in an Apocalypse? There can be no good people during a Apocalypse. No matter how righteous you are, when you are fighting to live — even if you kill to protect — you are not good. Righteous Quote: "There’s No Good or Evil at the End of the World There is only You" Righteous Quote:" A legend is what you do and not who you are." Fallout with Chris 34:34 How Do You Kill Time During An Apocalypse, really? Seriously, we do not know. It all depends on the scenario. Whether it's by nuclear war, a natural disaster, or The Rapture. We can prepare ourselves for whats to come until we're thrust into that position of "I must live." Prepare all you want. Start collecting canned goods now but we are not truly prepared until the moment becomes real and our true survival instinct kick in and define who we are when the apocalypse is upon us. Stacey Finney guest interviews Jo-Ann Rogan, lead singer of the band Thorazine. Jo-Ann was born and raised in North Babylon, New York, a suburb of Long Island. In 1985, Jo-Ann moved to Philadelphia where she began attending Temple University for Kinesiology. Shortly after coming to Philadelphia, she connected with West Philly punks and ultimately lived at Kill Time warehouse, a punk venue and living space. Jo-Ann helped put on shows that included many local artists such as Flag of Democracy (FOD) and hosted other events in Clark Park, a West Philadelphia land mark for outdoor festivals. Prior to entering Thorazine, Jo-Ann tells wild tales of backpacking through Europe and following FOD while they were on tour there. From dancing naked on stage with FOD to hitching a ride with a driver who jerked off in front of her and a friend, she weaves the tale of a young woman sowing her adventures and exploring the world on her own terms. Jo-Ann talks about touring and living with her band mates as well as being sued by the pharmaceutical giant, Smith-Kline-Beecham for using the name Thorazine. Jo-Ann shares many stories about the band’s ten-year stint: making a music video, playing Lalapalooza, and opening for the band Fear. Jo-Ann speaks with a heavy heart about the band’s break up in 2003, but shares her excitement for their recent reunion and what is happening with them now. She also discusses some of the barriers to being a female in the Philly punk scene as well as being the mother of two special needs boys. Jo-Ann talks about how her involvement in the punk scene has taught her to be a bold advocate where her children are concerned. Additionally, Jo-Ann blogs as “Punky Mamma,” where she writes about her daily experiences as a mother, among other topics. Jo-Ann shares some unbelievable stories and, in her own words, says, “Oh, it happened and it happened to me!” Photos by Stacey Finney The post LOUD! FAST! PHILLY!
