Her recent book, Kindred Creation, is a call and response to dream and design better worlds rooted in African lifeways: a path to Black freedom, a love letter to Black futures, and a blueprint to intergenerational Black joy and dignity—all (and always) on Black terms. * In this episode, Aida is joined by CIIS Director of the Center for Black & Indigenous Praxis Preston Vargas for a powerful conversation exploring African epistemologies and recalling the dignity and distinction of the African way of life. Aida shares her philosophical framework: remember, refuse, and reclaim as a vital guide for birthing new worlds and reclaiming land, language, lifestyle, and labor. * This episode was recorded during a live online event on February 19th, 2025. Americānī Houthiānōs oppugnant Praeses Americānus nautīs imperāvit ut crebrīs tēlīs impetum facerent in Iemen, unde Houthiānī latrōnēs suīs tēlīs innocentēs mercātōrēs nāvēsque onerāriās oppugnāre solent.

Yoon dīxit necesse sibi vidērī nē rēspūblica Cōrēānōrum detrimentum caperet ā Cōrēānīs Septentriōnālibus, quī tamen nōn videntur bellum in gentem Merīdiōnālem mōvisse. Senātus igitur Cōrēānōrum nunc dēlīberat, an Yoon sit āmovendus. Russī, quī prō regimine Sȳriacō anteā latrōnēs āeriā violentiā annō bis millēsimō sextō decimō represserant, nunc nequeunt āeroplāna ā bellō in Ūcrāīnēnsēs gerendō in Sȳriam dēdūcere; neque videntur putāre regimen diū contrā latrōnēs stātūrum, itaque nāvēs suās Tortōsā dēduxērunt. Russī enim duōs tantum portūs habent quī hieme nōn congelantur, vidēlicet Tortōsam in Sȳriā et Sebastopolim in Crimēā, quorum uterque nunc perīculōsior Russīs vidētur quam ut hāc quidem hieme adhibeātur. Lēgātī porro Russicī hortantur cīvēs, ut ē Sȳriā fugiant. Gallī ex Africānīs gentibus expulsī Prīmum Tzadī subitō foedus, quō licuit Gallīs mīlitibus castra in Tzadiā pōnere, termināvērunt; deinde novus praeses Senegālēnsium nuntiāvit nōn decēre Gallōs mīlitēs in Senegāliā versārī. Gallī iam ē Maliā, et Burkīnā Fāsō et Nigritāniā mīlitēs dēduxerant. Oranō porro, prīvata Gallōrum societas ad ūranium ēffodiendum constitūta, ējecta est ē Nigritāniā, ubi magistrātūs metalla publicāvērunt. Inde apparet Gallōrum auctōritātem in Africā esse dēminūtam. Gallōrum magistrātūs expulsī Senātus Gallōrum magistrātūs, quippe quibus senātōrēs tam sinistrārum partium quam dexterārum non iam cōnfīderent, improbāvit. Michaelis igitur Barnier brevissimum magistrātum in quīntā Gallōrum Rēpūblicā gessit.
Hugh Callacher, the founder of The Missing Kind Charity lays out the vision for the Kinda-Movement which encompasses various projects around the world to bring more kindness to people, animals and the planet.
Itaque incertum est, an superior Senātūs camera, ubi optimātium partes dominantur, velit magistrātūs, quōs Trump ēligit, cōnfirmāre. Āeroplānō glandibus plumbeīs ictō, magistrātūs Americānī prohibuērunt, nē quis hāc mēnse āeroplānum in Hāītiam dīrigeret. Scholz parum amātus Olāvius Scholz, cancellārius Germānōrum, comitia indīxit diē vīcēsimō tertiō mēnsis Februāriī habenda. Quibus in comitiīs ille vidētur sperāre sē posse secundum creārī cancellārium, quamquam minus amātur quam ullus alius cancellārius in memōriā Germānōrum.
Welcome to our 6th iteration of the Black Girl's Guide to Surviving Menopause podcast: the Season of Orisii. Building on our international diasporic tour from last year, this season's theme is Orisii, or 'pairs' in the Afric language of Yoruba. We've invited different types of pairs to explore the through-line between menarche and menopause. You will hear parent/child, partner/lovers and siblings to offer their reflections and observations about this journey as individuals and as Orisii. We, as people capable of menstruation, understand that each experience is unique and impacts both ourselves and the connections we have with our loved ones. For our final interview for this Season of Orisii, our producer and BGG2SM Creative Director, Mariah M., interviews our Lead Menopause Cartographer and Founder of BGG2SM, known to us as Omisade but known by their sister, Georgette, and close family as Wilhelmina aka Billie. Together, they are affectionately known as “The Burney Girls”. Two fiery daughters were born to a Cancer mother and a Scorpio father who has passed away. They were raised by a Cancer stepfather who adopted them when he married their mother. They spent their time growing up between North Carolina and Maryland, and they spent summers in New York. Now, both mothers of boys and grandmother (Georgette) of boys, we discuss motherhood and auntieship and the tenderness of Scorpio Season. Autumn invites us to slow down and embrace letting go. Scorpio is the sign of transformation, death, and rebirth, and this season holds a special place for The Burney Girls as November holds both their mother's day of ascension as well as their father's birthday, now passed. Within this mourning of what was, a new relationship and way of connection to their parents was birthed. Wilhelmina and Georgette, each named after their late father, have used their grief as a path to deeper connection as sisters in adulthood. You will hear parent/child, partner/lovers and siblings to offer their reflections and observations about this journey as individual and as Orisii. We, as people capable of menstruation, understand that each experience is unique and impacts both ourselves and the connections we have with our loved ones. For this fourth episode of our Season of Orisii, we have life partners, Jasiatic and Elsworth Usher. In this episode, we time-traveled, grounded in the here and now, dipping back to the past and stretching towards the future, where taking risks lands us in infinite possibilities and love grows. In numerology, the number 4 represents practicality, loyalty, knowledge, and dependability. It seems very fortunate for us to explore the journey from menarche to menopause through the lens of the intergenerational love partnership between Jasiatic and Elworth. Many astrologers agree that Virgo and Capricorn are one of the most auspicious pairings, platonically, romantically--creatively. Mercury and Saturn Pragmatism and Vigour Earth and Earth They seem to get each other... Jasiatic and Elsworth also share a love connection between the American South and the Global South, with Jasiatic heralding from Charlotte, North Carolina, and Elsworth a first-generation American from Belize. In this episode, we explore: Reflections of first periods (menarche) from the first person perspective and bearing witness to it Southern vs. Caribean mothers August Virgos Intergenerational love and care Unexpected death Grief Menstrual blood What it means to be sure and risk it all Meet Jasiatic and Elsworth: Jasiatic Anderson Usher, @jasiatic, resides at the cultural and philosophical crossroads of world travel, radical taste making, “artist as art”, and foodie meets chef. She is the creator of the Liberation Dinners and has hands in plant based pop ups, food history classes, transitional plant based coaching, along with food writing. Elswoth Usher, @iamelz, is a creative writer, digital content creator, sous chef, photographer, thinker, lover, partner, and Capricorn stelium. Together, they co-host "Su Casa," Charlotte's longest-running dance party for the culturally starved, which Jasiatic manifested over 10 years ago. *No menstrual blood was used to coerce Brother Elsworth. We, as people capable of menstruation, understand that each experience is unique and impacts both ourselves and the connections we have with our loved ones. For this third episode of our Season of Orisii, we have sisters adrienne maree brown and Autumn Brown. Opening portals, multiverse traveling companions, and life beyond the end of the world: How can we stay grounded in the present moment, in this reality of constant change, decay, death, and rebirth, without feeling completely overwhelmed? And then what? Surviving the various challenges within ourselves and in the world while navigating the transition between our changing identities of past, present, and future selves, all while supporting each other and remembering our individual needs. What if we redefined "self-centered" to mean the preservation of all aspects of ourselves, young, older, fragile, strong for iterative healing? These are some of the themes and questions we explored with the Sisters Brown, adrienne, and Autumn on this episode and we can't think of a better way to kick off Black August during our Season of Orisii. Black August is a time of year to honor our Black freedom fighters, political prisoners, and resistance against oppression via study, fasting, training and fighting. It is the antithesis of “celebration” and empty “homage.” Black August commemoration and practice place our collective struggle and sacrifice on center stage. More on the why of Black August here, detailed by the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement. Meet adrienne and Autumn: adrienne maree brown grows healing ideas in public through her multi-genre writing, her collaborations and her podcasts. Informed by 25 years of movement facilitation, somatics, Octavia E. Butler scholarship and her work as a doula, adrienne has nurtured Emergent Strategy, Pleasure Activism, Radical Imagination and Transformative Justice as ideas and practices for transformation. She is the author/editor of several published texts, co-generator of a tarot deck and a developing musical ritual. adrienne's forthcoming book Loving Corrections will be released on August 20 from AK Press. Autumn Brown is a musician, facilitator, and author of speculative fiction and creative non-fiction. As the front woman of the eponymous band, AUTUMN, she has created two EPs, The Animal in You and The Way Your Blood Beats. Her writing has been featured in Revolutionary Mothering, Parenting 4 Social Justice, Octavia's Brood, and Lightspeed Magazine. She co-hosts the podcast How to Survive the End of the World, and facilitates political education and movement strategy through the Anti-Oppression Resource and Training Alliance. Guest Post By David Stephen South Africa is facing waves of unprecedented electricity cuts due to maintenance of its coal power stations. There are reports of some households having just 6 hours of electricity per day. The head of their power utility company, Eskom, recently resigned. South Africa's neighbor, Zimbabwe also faces similar issues, with up to 19 hours of electricity cuts per day, due to low water levels for their main hydropower plant. The experience for South Africa mirrors some countries across sub-Saharan Africa with hyper-intense energy poverty. Can Maps Ease South Africa's Electricity Cuts Problem? There are power generation and distribution problems in some countries in the sub-continent resulting in hours of blackout at homes, workplaces and others. The extent of the problem in a country is sometimes masked, with varying stats and some neighborhoods having it worse than others. Looking at ways to solve the problem, with alternative energy sources and new players, it is important to expose the extent of the problem in a country, at any point. Electricity Cuts Map This will be a map of a country to show areas with electricity or not, at every moment. This will be similar to traffic maps for internet data and others, emanating from different locations. This is different from satellite images of a cross section of light, at night, of electricity spread in continents. This will be an actual user generated, real time data for availability and cuts. How? People across the country will feed in data of electricity status from their locations, ON or OFF, via an app. The app will be used when GPS is activated and would have two basic buttons, ON and OFF. Clicking on either would send data into the server, to be visualized in a map that can be seen publicly. The goal is to expose the extent of the problem, to governments, citizens, investors, stakeholders and so on. There can also be a text version, where information in a particular format can be sent to a number, to then transmit it into data to be visualized. This function, for feature phones can come later, or for those with smartphones without internet connections. There can also be one for voice messages in local languages, using a format, which can be transmitted to OFF and ON. As soon as electricity is restored somewhere, a person can go to the app, which would request that location is activated, to click ON. This can also be done anytime as long as there is electricity. The data will be verified by those around the same location who click ON. When it goes off, they can click OFF to send the data as well. There will be a transformer, pole or cable feature on the app, so that those in places where their public electricity facilities are damaged can report it, and it goes live as well, for another segment on the map. The objective is so that what people experience is exposed, to prospect for change, which can be an incentive for most people to report things accurately. The map can be based on any of the popular map services. It would show dark and gold, for light and blackout, with chances to zoom in to streets. This will be a silent way to ensure that the problem is in center of priority for decision makers, so that whatever is improving or not, is noticed. South Africa can lead with this solution, but it would far applicable, specifically in some other countries where they have been suffering hard cuts for years. So long as there is no chat feature or social media, some governments may not be quick to crush it. Some may still do, but a few that would be opened to this accountability may find that the architecture is a useful guide towards infrastructural advance for the country. If the app has to make money to pay for servers and up times, it is possible to allow for limited ads, in general, without tracking. There will also be a privacy policy on geodata of people not to be used for any external purpose. South Africa has a problem that other countries in Afric...

Raedariī Canadēnsēs comprehēnsī Ottavae prope senātum Canadēnsium raedāriī, quī quinque hebdomadēs reclāmant in mandātum, quō prohibētur nē quis nisi īnsitiōne contra luem coronāriam munītus mercēs inter Canadam et Americam vehat, nunc ā custōdibus pūblicīs comprehenduntur et dē viīs āmoventur. Justīnus Trudeau, summus magistrātus Canadēnsium, ēdīxit, nē quid detrimentī rēs pūblica caperet, auctōritātem extraordināriam sibi arrogandam, ut raedae in viīs illegtimē statūtae uncō abstraherentur.
Quae ēdicta, dum strenuē in populum impōnēbantur, Boris Johnson, minister prīmārius, ipse conviviīs cēnīsque identidem celebrandīs violābat, quārē rogātur, an intemperantiā impulsus Johnson perīculōsē ēgerit, an māiorem, quam necesse fuerit, partem populō adēmerit lībertātis. Itaque tribus rēbus pūblicīs subversīs Russī māiorem in diēs grātiam colunt in Africā occidentālī, ubi auctoritas Gallōrum pedetemptim dēminuitur. NATURES INVITATION On the fair face of Nature let us muse, and dream by lapsing stream and drooping wood; Tread the dark forests whose primeval ranks, since the creation dawn have cast their shade; Ponder by flowing stream and ocean tides, and note the varied forms of life they hold, Mark the wild game so clear to hunter's heart, the swarming fowl that skim the salty deeps, The birds that haunt the woodlands and the plains, The fish that swim the seas, the lakes, the streams, And tempt the thoughtful angler to their marge; Glance at the life that fills our native woods, and game of Asian plains, and Afric wilds. When soft May breezes fan the early woods, and with her magic wand the blue-eye'd Spring Quickens the swelling blossoms and the buds, Then forth the russet partridge leads her brood, while on the fallen tree-trunk drums her mate ; The quail her young in tangled thicket hides, the dun deer with their fawns the forests range, The wild geese platoons hasten far in air, the wild ducks from their Southern lagoons pass, And soaring high their Northward journeyings take, The dusky coot along the coast-line sweeps, The piping snipe and plover that frequent, The sandy bars and beaches, wing their flight, And all the grassy prairies of the West, Team with the speckled younglings of the grouse, And all the budding forests and the streams Are gay with beauty, joyous with young life. Then swell the first bird melodies; the wren chirrups and perches on the garden rail, The blue-bird twitters on the lilac hedge, or flits on azure wings from tree to tree; The golden robin on the apple-bough, hovers, where last year's withered nest had been, The darting swallows circle o'er the roof, the woodpeckers on trunk of gnarled trees Tap their quick drum-beats with their horny beaks, the crow caws hoarsely from the blasted pine, High in mid-air the sailing hawk is poised, while from the grove the purple pigeon-flocks, Burst with loud flapping in the grain-sown fields. Fair is the scene in Autumn, when the frosts from palettes rich, with prodigal, gorgeous brush Color the nodding groves with brown and gold. Then silvery-skied, and purple-hazed the dome of heaven's deep vault, and fair the earth below. Far up, where sunny uplands scope their sides, shaggy with woods, prone to the brimming stream, Where bowering beech trees shake their laden boughs, and oaks their varnished acorns high uplift, Where the broad butter-nut its gummy fruit in russet husks slow-ripens day by day, And where in crowded ranks the chestnut groves waves out their broad-leaved pennons to the air, And from their prickly burs shake treasures down, there the quick clusterings of the squirrels sound. The gentle valley with its belt of hills crowned to their tops with grand, primeval woods, Glows with all forms and hues that nature loves. Deep in its hollow stretch meadows brightly green, kept verdurous by the full o'erflowing stream ; Yet the deep swamps and thickets that engird, the river-reaches, are resplendent all, Their umbrage tinctur'd with imperial dyes. The maples tall with blood-red foliage burn, the hickories clap their palms of burnish'd gold, The poplar thrusts its yellow spire in air, the russet oaks and purpled dogwoods blend, Their colors with the alder's sable green and scarlet sumacks; all contrasted rich With sombre evergreens, and willows pale. And when the winds autumnal, wailing strip the frosted foliage, like a host they stand, With trailing banners and with drooping plumes. Such be the scenes in wondrous forest-land Such be the scenes by sea and lake and stream That we would picture; wild romantic scenes, Dear to the hunter's and the angler's soul. -Isaac McLelllan

Conclusion, les Français doivent quitter le Mali. L'acronyme AFRIC signifie Association for Free Research and International Cooperation.

Today, we STOP in our TRACTS for this conversation…with a black man! A man who has been in my life for over 20 years and impacted it in ways that continue to unfold…Steve Anderson was born in Louisville, Kentucky in the 60s – which is considered one of the most dangerous cities on earth. When his Dad was shot by his “supposed” friend when he was just 9yrs old, anger smoldered within him, “how could my Mom not press charges? How could the other man, shot in the mouth, live; and my Dad, shot in the leg - die?” So many inbuilt experiences of growing up Black permeated his body before he moved to LA to start life on his own at 21 – but quickly, he began his decades-long navigation of the globe starting in Switzerland.Picked up by two budding beach volleyball players from Australia, he would move to Perth to execute the dream of winning Olympic medals – which he did with a Bronze in ’96 and a Gold in 2000 w Nat Cook & Kerri Pottharst. Marrying his Swiss Aussie wife in 2000, he remained Nat’s coach for 16yrs.During that time, he would head up coaching programs in Bali and Venuatu and leave legacies for athletes and organizations in those countries over the next 10yrs. My Canadian beach team would rise to our best ever World finish of 7th place under his guidance and the things I learned with this man can only be described as “zen tutelage”!Steve became instrumental in my life for being able to ask and express things that sometimes, it felt like, there was no one else to really, be comfortable asking. My Mom married my Black Dad in 1973 (when Interracial marriage was only legalized in the US in 1967 – 6yrs prior) and many family members refused to come to that wedding. My Mom and Dad hailed from one of the most racially charged cities in Canada, being on the Atlantic Coast where many slave boats dropped off “cargo” (and I say it like that bc that’s how it was back then) in the 1800s before heading down to the US cities. There is even a city in Atlantic Canada called “Afric-ville” bc of its dense population of blacks. My last name of Maxwell is actually Scottish bc my great-great-great GrandFather was a cook on the ship where every black person took the Masters name of Maxwell! In 2013, Steve left to head up the whole of Team Canada BVP with his now 5yr old son and soon to be new wife Alicia. He would lead that country to #1 in the world within a short 2 year period.Recently, he was asked by his suburb, aptly named “The Beaches” in Toronto to give the speech for their #BlackLivesMatter march. He begins our conversation with his emotional share of his life experience as a Black Global Citizen of this planet we call earth! Piece based on Poems on Various Subjects Religious and Moral by Phil Smith. "The reason I chose this item from the list of Smithsonian Treasures was, I think, because it looked like something I might instinctively shy away from, or think, "that's not mine to explore." It’s a book of poems, published in 1773, written by Phillis Wheatley, "a young Negro Girl, who was but a few Years since, brought an uncultivated Barbarian from Africa." The horrific language of that description is from the book’s introduction, in which her "master" addresses the public to confirm that these poems really are the work of his slave. I found it an intense and confusing document to engage with, knowing the context of its creation, and even more so as I began to explore the poems. How she crafts iambic pentameter, and brings such richness of sound and image together in her invocations of nature - this really grabbed me (lines like: “And nectar sparkle on the blooming rose.”); but I felt resistance to all the talk of heaven (most of the poems are elegies for the recently-bereaved, called “On The Death Of … ”). There are poems in which she describes her own story as one of salvation - lines like "’Twas mercy brought me from my Pagan land”; alongside other passages, like this one, where she lays out her anger and grief: Should you, my lord, while you peruse my song, Wonder from whence my love of Freedom sprung, Whence flow these wishes for the common good, By feeling hearts alone best understood, I, young in life, by seeming cruel fate Was snatch’d from Afric’s fancy’d happy seat: What pangs excruciating must molest, What sorrows labour in my parent’s breast? I am grateful for the invitation to respond to this Smithsonian item. Reading the book of poems made me touch on the sadness and fear that I feel around the implications of my whiteness and my maleness. It made me feel angry about our past, and shameful of - and frustrated by - my complicity in the refusal of some parts of self and society in the UK (and America) to dismantle colonial attitudes and address racist structures, mental and social. I felt drawn to trying to express something of that by using Wheatley’s words. "I started by collecting phrases from across the book and reordering and reassembling them into short choruses and mantras. I was drawn to fragments of text around the oft-repeated phrase "on the death of", as well words that refer to existence - "endless", "breath". I noted down lines that, taken out of their original context, seem to address the reader directly: "How soon would you each sigh, each fear dismiss?" "InitialIy, I asked a friend in the US to read the extracts, and thought about finding an African-American actor as I feared erasing or misrepresenting Wheatley’s experience and story. But through conversations, and with some time, I realised that I was being evasive, looking to hide behind other people’s voices rather than being up front about the fact that it was my own response to Phillis Wheatley's work. "The piece that has emerged is called “Torn”. This word is one Wheatley uses to describe death (the image of a branch ripped from the tree), and it echoes the violence of the transatlantic slave trade in which children were “seiz’d” from their parents. “And sure ’tis mine to be ashamed, and mourn” - I sing this line as a lament, inviting myself to engage with Wheatley's story, acknowledging my positionality as a white British man and the responsibility we all have to learn from the "evils past”. In the middle, Wheatley’s words are heard in celebration of nature - the divinity of mountains and forests; but the idyll is ruptured, sonically, by the returning violence of human brutality - the ripping apart of families and community. "This piece is just a response. To understand Wheatley’s world and experience and art is to read her poems. I hope this piece will invite you to do so!" TechCentral — In this promoted episode of the podcast, TechCentral speaks to Thibault Crosnier Leconte, country chairman and GM at French pharmaceuticals giant Sanofi, about the company’s initiative to identify and support healthtech start-ups and entrepreneurs. Sanofi is calling for South African entries to the Afric@Tech Challenge, part of the Viva Technology 2020 event in June in Paris, France, and is specifically looking for start-ups that are innovating in the area of health and medical technology. There, they will have a chance to present their inventions to global investors and tech leaders at Europe’s largest technology event. As part of the Afric@Tech Challenge, which closes on 6 March 2020, start-ups stand a chance to not only present their technologies at Viva Tech but also gain access to an investment partnership with Sanofi. In the podcast, Crosnier Leconte explains why Sanofi is interested in supporting South African – and African – healthtech start-ups and entrepreneurs and what those entering can expect from the challenge. Enter the challenge here: https://challenges.vivatechnology.com/en/challe Sanofi at Afric@Tech comprises four challenges aimed at providing innovative and adapted solutions to improve access to medicine and healthcare in Africa. Initiated by Sanofi in all African countries, this contest will help identify, reward and accompany the best start-ups in their goal of revolutionising practices in the health sector in Africa. Now in its third year, the event consists of four challenges, which Crosnier Leconte sets out in the podcast. The selected projects could also benefit from financial assistance and individual support from Sanofi, through a system of coaching and mentoring. “The four challenges are part of Sanofi’s strategy to encourage innovation in Africa. They represent a concrete way to contribute locally through the support provided to the most audacious and innovative entrepreneurs in the achievement of their projects,” says Crosnier Leconte.

Do you have pet names for your plants? Amy the Amaryllis. Jerry the geranium. Once I bought some dahlias at a private plant sale. Before I drove away, I rolled down the window to ask for the sellers name; they’ve been my “Doris“ dahlias ever since. Doris and I have stayed in touch over the years, and I have to say; she’s as lovely as the bloom on those dahlias. So whether they are called Howard or Bertie, Harry or Liz; if you’ve named your plants, you are not alone. The gesture of honoring a loved one or the little laugh evoked from a cleverly name to plant all add it to the joy of gardening. There’s nothing wrong with that. Brevities #OTD On this day in 1855 Paul de Longpré (Books By This Author)was born. Known as the "King of Flowers", de Longpré painted exceptional portrayals of roses (his first love), and wildflowers (his second love). If you look at his work, you'll find somewhere in his composition his signature accent – a bumblebee. After exhibitions of his work on the East Coast, reviewers praised, "No one but a poet could paint as he does." "De Longpré has the rare gift of reading down to the heart of his loved flowers." De Longpré was raised in northern Paris. His father left the family early one - a hurt that de Longpré hid from reporters; telling them that his father was dead. De Longpré's family was artistic and he helped his mother financially by painting silk fans with his brother. (The fans were quite fashionable at the time). After marrying the delightful Josephine Estievenard, de Longpré was mentored by Francois Rivoire. Like Rivoire, de Longpré’s mastery of watercolors are said to rival the richness of oil painting. When de Longpré lost his savings in a Paris bank crash, he immigrated with his wife and their children to the United States - ultimately calling Hollywood their home in 1900. At the time, Hollywood was a brand new development just west of Los Angeles - De Longpré built a lavish Mission Revival style villa and it quickly became the most famous estate on the boulevard. He bought an additional three blocks of property from socialite Daeida Wilcox Beveridgein exchange for three of his flora watercolors. On the property, de Longpré planted over 4000 rosebushes the muses for his work – and he turned the main level of his magnificent home into an art gallery. The place became a sensation; a hub for elites, as well as a tourist destination, with over 8,000 visitors a month. De Longpré’s guests were greeted by a very courteous Japanese butler who would hand them a list of the paintings titles and prices. Pauls daily habit was to get up in the morning and pick flowers with his youngest daughter, Pauline, by his side. After creating more than 2,000 paintings, de Longpré died in 1911. Josephine and the girls sold the house and sadly agreed to a final exhibition of de Longpré's work, which included his masterpiece the Cherokee Rose. It was a Josephine's lifelong regret to part with these paintings. Thirteen years later, the architectural wonder of the de Longpré's villa and the lavish gardens were all destroyed to make room for commercial buildings and parking lots. #OTD On this day in 1734, Elsa Beate Bunga was born. She was a pistol. Married to the handsome Swedish Count Sven Bunga, Elsa was a passionate amateur botanist. At her Beataberga mountain estate, she had many large greenhouses. Bunga wrote a book called, "About the Nature of Grapevines", which brought her notoriety and authority. She even corresponded with fellow Swede Carl Linnaeus (who is almost 30 years older than her). Bunga also drew attention because of her way of dressing. Like the women of her time she wore a skirt, but she distinguished herself by dressing as a man from the waist up. When King Gustav III (1771 - 1792), inquired about a peculiarly dressed woman at the Royal Swedish opera, Bunge boldly replied, "Tell his Majesty that I am the daughter of statesman Fabian Reder and married to statesman Sven Bunga". Unearthed Words #OTD Maryland selected the Black-Eyed Susan as the State Flower. This was after much debate. The Baltimore Sun, among many others, was not in favor of the Black-Eyed Susan selection, writing dismissively: "Susan came to Maryland, not on the Ark or the Dove, but a migrant from the Midwest mixed in clover and hayseed." Before the plant received it's popular common name, there was a song by John Gay called Black-Eyed Susan - popular in British maritime novels. The song tells of a love story between Susan and her Sweet William. As the two say their final farewells before his departure on a long sea voyage, Susan had crying and had black circles around her eyes. Today, their stories continue; folklore sharing that Black-Eyed Susans and Sweet William share the same bloom time to celebrate their undying love for each other. Here are a few verses: All in the Downs the fleet was moor'd, The streamers waving to the wind When black-eyed Susan came on board; Oh! where shall I my true love find? Tell me, ye jovial sailors, tell me true, If my sweet William sails among your crew. William, who high upon the yard, Rock'd with the billows to and fro, Soon as her well-known voice he heard,; He sigh'd, and cast his eyes below; ;- The cord glides swiftly through his glowing hands, ' And quick as lightning on the deck he stands. ' So the sweet lark, high pois'd in air, Shuts close his pinions to his breast, If chance his mate's shrill call he hear, And drops at once into her nest, The noblest captain in the British fleet, Might envy William's lips those kisses sweet. O Susan, Susan, lovely dear, My vows shall ever true remain; Let me kiss off that falling tear; We only part to meet again. . Change as ye list, ye winds, my heart shall be The faithful compass that still points to thee. Believe not what the landsmen say, Who tempt with doubts thy constant mind; They'll tell thee, sailors, when away, In every port a mistress find. Yes, yes, believe them, when they tell thee so, For thou art present wheresoe'er I go. If to fair India's coast we sail, Thy eyes are seen in di'monds bright; Thy breath is Afric's spicy gale, Thy skin is ivory so white. Thus, ev'ry beauteous object that I view, Wakes in my soul some charm of lovely Sue. Though battle calls me from thy arms, Let not my pretty Susan mourn; Though cannons roar, yet safe from harms. William shall to his dear return. Love turns aside the balls 'that round me fly; Lest precious tears should drop from Susan's eye. I The boatswain gave the dreadful word, The sails their swelling bosoms spread; No longer must she stay aboard They kiss'd she sigh'd; he hung his head Her less'ning boat unwilling rows to land; Adieu! she cries, and wav'd her lily hand. Increase your tree diversity by planting a Kentucky Coffee Tree. Something Sweet Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart The story of de Longpré is quite enchanting. There are two images in particular about de Longpré that stuck with me. The first is such a quintessentially French image. De Longpré is riding his bicycle, peddling out to the garden with an easel on his back, a hat on his head, on his way to paint the flowers he loved so much. The second image is a photo of de Longpré in the garden with his little daughter Pauline. In an article in the Overland Monthly, we get a little glimpse into their relationship. "de Longpré’s youngest daughter, is a bright little miss about eight years old. If you ask for her name, she will say it is Pauline; but the only name she has ever called at home is “Joujou”; the French word for toy or plaything. She is idolized by her famous father, and when he walks in the garden she is always by his side." Everyone agrees that the more diversity there is in politics the more innovative we will be and, the more likely we'll address the needs and challenges of the diverse communities that are emerging in this Global Economy. But the lack of progress in the representation of some groups, such as African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans and other minorities in many industries and in politics is particularly notable, especially in the United States and Europe. This episode celebrates minorities. We take a look at the contributions people of colour have made in the development of this world economy. In celebration of Black History Month, we recall the history of African-American contributions in the United States and we look at what we have to do today to ensure we have more minorities in both corporate and political leadership position.

The company behind the racist Chinese laundry detergent ad that sparked widespread online outrage around the world issued a half-hearted apology for the uproar it caused. Actually, it was one of those 'we're sorry if anyone was offended' kind of apologies, nonetheless Shanghai Leishang Cosmetics did say sorry to Africans for any misunderstandings caused by the Qiaobi detergent ad: "We express our apology for the harm caused to the African people because of the spread of the ad and the over-amplification by the media,” the company said. It's the second part of their 'kind of' apology that is especially interesting. Deep down, it's highly likely that they are not really that sorry about the whole thing, but they do seem perturbed that the international media made such a fuss: "The foreign media might be too sensitive about the ad," said a company spokesman. The media seemingly picked up on the massive internet outrage that erupted, mostly in the US and UK, about the ad and the shocking characterization of black people as being "dirty." For most westerners, this type of blatant in-your-face racism is more reminiscent of 19th century 'black face' media in the US than the more subtle, yet equally destructive, stereotypes of black people that remain depressingly-common in contemporary television and film. Now that this incident appears to be settling down and we can step back to analyze what happen, it's apparent just how little Chinese society has progressed in understanding the importance of racial and cultural diversity as well as how seriously much of the rest of the world takes this issue. Throughout much of this affair, it really seemed that Chinese and Westerners were speaking past each other as if it was two totally different conversations. Westerners, mostly white people, were visibly outraged by the Chinese callousness. Meanwhile, the prevailing Chinese response was often confusion over what all the fuss was about. Not surprisingly, this led to a retreat into an instinctive defensive crouch that occurs whenever China comes under sustained criticism from the West. Nicole Bonnah is the Beijing-based founder of the Blacks Lives in China blog and a documentary producer working on a new film about black and African experiences in China. In response to the recent controversy, Nicole wrote an entry for her blog this week that said the time is now here for the Chinese to accept some responsibility for the "Afric-phobia" and anti-black racism that is prevalent in contemporary Chinese society. She joined Eric to discuss her recent blog post and to reflect on the Qiaobi ad controversy as a whole. Join the conversation. We'd love to hear your thoughts on whether you agree with the online outrage that enough is enough and the Chinese can no longer hide behind the veil of "cultural context" that is so often used to justify offensive Chinese attitudes towards people of other races and ethnicities? Or do the Chinese have a point that the hyper political correctness in the West, so often criticized by Westerners themselves (ahem, Donald Trump) is to blame and that everyone is getting excited over this simple TV commercial for nothing.
