THE COURAGE TO COME BACK is an episode with my guest David Chalk. David is a Canadian businessman, AI innovator, and national literacy advocate who learned to read at the age of 62. He is featured in the acclaimed documentary The Truth About Reading—now streaming on Apple TV and Prime Video—which exposes the widespread crisis of illiteracy across North America. David's story offers hope to families and parents seeking answers, proving it's never too late to learn and change is possible at any age. As a child, David was wrongly labeled “mentally retarded” in an era before learning differences were understood. He lives with ADHD, dyslexia, prosopagnosia (the inability to recognize faces), and other challenges. Dismissed by the education system and told he would never succeed, David barely made it through school. Yet by 20, he became an airline pilot. By 23, he launched his first business—and by 28, was a self-made millionaire. He credits his resilience to the unconditional love of his mother and a belief in human potential. Today, David is using his decades of experience in artificial intelligence to help families break free from the cycle of reading failure. He is the founder of ReadingRoad.ai, a groundbreaking platform that blends neuroscience with emotionally responsive AI to help children and adults master reading. His focus is on creating safe, empowering experiences—especially for parents who feel lost in a system that's failing their children. In 2025, David was awarded the Courage to Come Back Award, one of Canada's highest civilian honors, for overcoming adversity and driving national awareness. He speaks across North America to parents, educators, and leaders—explaining how the brain learns, why current methods fall short, and what can be done right now to create lasting change. David's message is clear: no child should struggle alone, and no parent should be left without answers. With the right tools and understanding, literacy can be unlocked—for everyone. We The People During a recent zoom coaching group that I'm part of, one of the participants asked our coach: “Is the US going to make it?” This certainly was not a question I had expected since this particular group's focus is for its participants to share personal issues and get insights on how to tackle them. Our coach quickly shifted gears, took a deep breathe and calmly said: “Not this America. It's on its way out.” Not a very inspiring and positive response, I thought. After all, I had joined this group to receive uplifting, optimistic information and tools that I could use to improve my own life. But I suddenly felt a veil of anxiety swoop in and highjack my previously calm mind . Yet I was intrigued by this big picture question as I love deep explorations of such topics. And now I was even more intrigued by how the group would react to the coaches' rather dark statement. What followed was a sobering group conversation about the state of our nation. I started to see that the most pressing question clouding the American psyche - hidden underneath a thick layer of unresolved anger, outrage and division - was a simple question: 'Are we going to be okay?' And since ‘We' consists of millions of ‘I's… millions of individuals are feeling their own level of anxiety, wondering whether they would be okay following the upcoming elections. It was quickly evident to me that this conversation was not at all about politics but rather about our own individual levels of fear of death. The problem with this simple question is that it's impossible for us to answer it. We would have to first define what ‘we' means. And what 'okay' means. Maybe it would be easier to ask ‘will I be okay?'. Because that way, we can define for ourselves what those words mean to us. Will I, the human form survive? Will I die during some form of local unrest? Will my partner, my husband, my wife, my children be hurt by some evil forces of the opposing party? Will there be a civil war? Bombs? World war 3? Is this the beginning of the Apocalypse? And by being ‘okay', do I mean that I still get to go to Starbucks, keep my job, drive my car, play pickle ball, binge Netflix, go on all-inclusive resort vacations and invest in the stock market? So, let's look at what is frantically knocking at our front doors: Elections. Blue vs. Red, Good vs. Evil, Right vs. Wrong, Them vs. Us, You vs. Me… let's call all of this ‘Division' for simplicity reasons. To our coach's point, the United States of America is clearly divided and its current incarnation might soon come to an end. It is a possibility. We may not want to look at it. We may not like it. We may not want to face the fact that it might become a reality. But we do need to consider it as being one of the options. That said, what I foresee is going to end is not the people, not the spirit, not the states… only the ‘United' part. Let's face it… we no longer see eye to eye as a nation. I personally feel that a much needed split up between the main two clashing narratives on how to run this country - is needed. And a split up wouldn't be the end of the world by the way... HOCUS FOCUS is an episode with entrepreneur and writer Russell Kramer. In his own words: "When I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of seven - for asking questions without raising my hands and standing at my desk - I was promptly put onto Dexedrine, an amphetamine. I didn't want to take it, but I was given no choice and refused it at age twelve - only to be forced back onto ADHD meds when I was 16. This time it was adderall. I began to like adderall and took it on and off until my early twenties. I earned a college degree, did well in school, biked across the country and became a bit of an addict. Upon withdrawing from Adderall, I learned how to manage my ADHD and my addiction. Drinking Ayahuasca helped some. But ultimately I learned how to manage and live with adhd without taking medications and it became my aim to discuss this topic, represent the people and be there to help people with the brutal withdrawal of adhd medications. Russell Kramer is an entrepreneur and a writer and he has written - in his words - “The best Adderall memoir the world has ever known”, 'Hocus Focus: Coming of age with ADD and its medicines'." ADHD cannot cause ADHD is a mind boggling exploration around the idea that a label (ADHD) used to describe a bunch of observed behaviors cannot actually be the cause of the same label (ADHD). You may have to read this 5 times and listen to the episode 5 times, but you will see that this is a fallacy that we've come to accept in our society. ADHD: GOOD NEWS. BAD NEWS. is a new episode around the importance of realizing that true ADHD [symptom] healing is work that takes time. There is no quick-fix, no one-size fits all, no pill to magically make it go away. I believe that the real healing takes time and effort and it starts with parents taking radical ownership of their families, their children and most importantly THEMSELVES. They are not to blame, it's not their fault, but it is their duty as a parent to transform themselves first before medicating their children with schedule 2 drugs! Starting in 2024 I will be coaching 8-10 families and if you're interested to be one of the families (or individuals), go to www.adhdisover.com and get more info on my coaching offerings: https://www.adhdisover.com/services-7 You can schedule a FREE 30-min. WHERE ARE THE MEN? is a rant about the missing presence of fathers in families where an ADHD diagnosis has shown up. Sure, in most cases the fathers are there... physically. But are they there emotionally, spiritually and most of all intentionally! When men heal, boys heal! Boys are more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD than girls in the U.S., with approximately 11.9% of boys ages 3 to 17 years diagnosed with ADHD currently, compared to 5.5% of girls.
