Dr. Armstrong explains what makes the adolescent so amazingly powerful and talks about how we can tap its wonders in the middle school and high school level with simple interventions such as bringing emotion into learning, providing students with physical movement as they learn, incorporating real life experiences like internships and apprenticeships, and helping students understand how their brains work. Thomas Armstrong, Ph.D. is the author of 20 books including his latest, a novel called Childless. His other books include The Power of the Adolescent Brain, Neurodiversity in the Classroom, 7 Kinds of Smart, Multiple Intelligences in the Classroom, and The Human Odyssey. There are over 100 foreign editions of Dr. Armstrong's books in 30 languages. Dr. Armstrong has given over 1000 keynotes, workshop presentations, and lectures on six continents in 29 countries, and 44 states in the past thirty years. He has written articles for Family Circle and Ladies Home Journal, as well as a column for Parenting Magazine. Key Takeaways “What were they thinking?” A lot of things are going on in the teenage brain that were not going on 2-3-4 years ago. It's amazing that teenagers are as reasonable as they are given the neurological changes and growth happening within the teenage brain. The teenage brain can often seem that they have their foot on the gas pedal, but the brakes haven't been installed yet. They have an insatiable need for new experiences. The teenage brain fully develops around the age of 22-23. Giving teens the chance to make choices and take responsibility is important for their mental growth. Help your teen to self-regulate their emotions. Help them understand what the triggers are and then help them develop their own strategies on what they can do about it. Teens are looking for leadership, people who can help them learn things. Be sure that they are learning from people who have their best interest in mind. Help them find mentors in their area of interest so they can have hands on experience. The teenage brain is seeking reward. Social media plays a huge role in that need. Parents can tab into rewarding their teen in ways that satisfy that need without giving way to social media. We are born as geniuses with the joy and passion to learn. Over time, that can be diminished. As parents we can stop suppressing the things that they love to do. Let them have the experiences that help them decide what they want to move towards. Multiple reality TV shows like “Fear Factor” and “Survivor” have become enduring franchises based on a simple premise: Disgusting participants and audience alike by subjecting participants to challenges involving unusual foods, or slimy, and creepy crawly creatures. Despite their revulsive nature, millions of people tune in week after week. Moreover, for some people, “gross” things are not only appealing but fascinating, and can even become an object of desire. In addition, for humans, disgust is such an important, organizing emotion that some prominent researchers have proposed it underlies our sense of morality. To help us answer what is so intensely compelling about the repulsive, and give us insight into the role of disgust in human behavior, we have invited Dr. Thomas Armstrong to Psychodrama. Tom is an associate professor of psychology at Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA. He is the director of the Palouse Emotion and Experimental Psychopathology (PEEP) Laboratory [http://www.peep-lab.org/]. He completed his PhD at Vanderbilt University in Clinical Psychology, and his research focuses on improving the measurement and treatment of disgust in anxiety-related disorders, and more recently, sexual dysfunctions. Professor Armstrong is also interested in making eye tracking methodology more accessible, and he recently co-created an online alternative to eye tracking: MouseView.js [https://mouseview-docs.netlify.app/]. We had a lot of fun and learned a lot in our free ranging discussion with Tom about the things we find disgusting (frogs for Katie, and very little for Leo), and what these individual differences may mean for various aspects of life. Yet another episode in which we surely lost more potential endorsements. Nutella, we hardly knew ye. LISTENER WARNING: As may be expected, the episode discusses explicitly topics related to disgusting stimuli and ranges from phobic stimuli (like the feared tree frogs and octopus!) to the taboo incest and very unusual paraphilias. Listener discretion is very much advised. Enjoy!
Colin Pearce speaks with Jim Cathcart about: Nature, nurture, velocity, intelligence Jim Cathcart, National Speakers Association Hall of Fame inductee, Sales and Marketing Hall of Fame inductee, has authored an impressive 20 books, the most popular of which is The Acorn Principle. In this podcast, Jim shares the highlights of his approach to the development of human personality, temperament and intelligence. He explores the interaction between 'the nature vs. nurture discussion' in reference to who we are according to our DNA and who we become. The acorn principle says that an acorn will always produce an acorn tree, never a spruce or an elm. That's our nature. How that oak is nurtured will have the major impact on who a person ends up being. This is why it is important to know our nature first. Part of knowing our nature is to understand our unique intelligence. And yes there are multiple intelligences; a musical verbal mathematical, spatial, interpersonal etc… However undergirding our intelligence is what Jim calls our personal velocity – the natural part of energy and drive. He gives a quick illustration of this by comparing the velocity of former US President Donald J Trump and current US president Joe Biden. Even a casual observer can see there's a difference in velocities. One is neither better nor worse than the other. It's an example of the different velocities between a bear and an eagle. Jim discusses values and says there are seven that are common to us all; however his top three values might be the same as your bottom three values. He says when we understand that, we will be a long way towards understanding and resolving conflict in families friendships, teams and workplaces. Jim reminisces about some of his earlier personality type nicknames and they are worth hitting. He mentions Joe Bag'o'oughnuts, Buzz Constantly, Bill BottomLine and Tom Triplicate. Although Jim doesn't use these characters in his current speeches and studies they were very formative in his earlier work. If you're interested in pursuing more in any of Jim's topics you can refer to some of the books that have formed his thinking over the last 15 years Howard Gardner, ‘Frames of Mind' – about multiple intelligences. The MYTH OF THE ADHD CHILD by Dr. Thomas Armstrong who is a strong objector to the controversial ADD/ADHD diagnosis. Here are some topics, he will be discussing: Why Medicating Kids to Make Them Behave is Not a Very Good Idea Reason #1 for America’s ADHD Epidemic: We Don’t Let Kids Be Kids Anymore – ADHD presents a question of brain maturation, not a neurological disorder, so a child’s age relative to their classroom plays largely into the ADHD diagnosis. At the same time, we’re expecting children to do things they are not developmentally ready for. Reason #3 for America’s ADHD Epidemic: We Disempower Our Kids at School – Boring classrooms may be causing ADHD symptoms and thus fueling the sale of “bad schooling practices adaptation drugs.” Reason #7: Too Many People Have a Vested Economic Interest in Seeing It Continue – Dr. Armstrong takes a look at some of the underlying relationships and complex financial forces at work to feed the ADHD diagnosis. Strategy #1: Let Your Child Fidget – schools are beginning to recognize the benefits of fidgeting and are building it into the school day. Forget fidget spinners! Try everyday objects like a tennis ball, clay, pipe cleaners, or a string of beads that a child can safely and quietly manipulate while they work. October is often recognized as ADHD Awareness Month! "At a time when ADHD and the medications used to treat it are growing by leaps and bounds, Thomas Armstrong asks parents to think critically about the ADHD diagnosis, to value the uniqueness of their children’s different rhythms of learning, attending, and behaving, and to appreciate and use the wide range of non-drug strategies that are out there to help their kids prosper in school and flourish in life." - Michele Borba, Ed.D., author of The Big Book of Parenting Solutions, Building Moral Intelligence, and UnSelfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World "Thomas Armstrong, author of a pioneering series of books on neurodiversity, offers practical alternatives for parents who want to enable their ADHD-diagnosed children to tap the natural strengths of their atypical minds, manage stress, and express their creative intelligence without relying solely on medication. An inspiring guide to helping your kids live up to their fullest potential."- Steve Silberman, author of NeuroTribes: The Legacy of Autism and the Future of Neurodiversity
How can you improve your child’s behavior and attention span without drugs, labels or coercion? Dr. Thomas Armstrong, author of The Myth of the ADHD Child: 101 Ways to Improve Your Child’s Behavior and Attention Span without Drugs, Labels, or Coercion, attempts to answer this question on this week's episode of the podcast. Now, I want to point out that Dr. Armstrong has opinions on ADHD that many doctors don’t share, but I think it’s important to ask questions and he does a good job of asking questions about a disorder that confuses many parents. In our conversation, we talk about the rise in ADHD diagnoses, what schools are doing right and wrong to help kids who have short attention spans, and about tips to improve your child’s behavior and attention without drugs.

A new concept on human diversity has emerged over the past 10 years that promises to revolutionize the way educators provide services to students with special needs: neurodiversity. Just as we celebrate diversity in nature and cultures, so too do we need to honor the diversity of brains among our students who learn, think, and behave differently. In Neurodiversity in the Classroom, best-selling guest Dr. Thomas Armstrong argues that we should embrace the strengths of such neurodiverse students to help them and their neurotypical peers thrive in school and beyond. His innovative book focuses on five categories of special needs: learning disabilities, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, intellectual disabilities, and emotional and behavioral disorders. We will discuss: * The positive attributes associated with that category, * Acclaimed neurodiverse adults who have excelled in their chosen fields, * Computer programs and applications that allow students with special needs to overcome obstacles and achieve success, * Rich networks of human resources both inside and outside of school that educators can draw upon to support the social and emotional lives of neurodiverse students, * Innovative learning strategies that are tailored to each student's unique strengths, * Future career paths for which a student s particular gifts might be a good fit, * Modifications in the school environment that allow for seamless inclusion of neurodiverse students in the regular classroom, and * Timely information about how to integrate the strategies and assessments for each category with the Common Core State Standards.
