Now that you're finished with the horror of Thanksgiving (turkey), join us as we examine a real life horror, straight out of Illinois. The enfield horror is a cryptid seen in the southern part of Illinois beginning on April 25, 1973. Reports started from a single source, Henry McDaniel, who heard scratching on his door in the evening around 9:30. Upon closer investigation, McDaniel found a strange creature that hissed like a wild cat, was 4.5 feet tall and gray, wih three legs, two short arms, and big pink eyes. Later, additional witnesses would claim to have seen the cryptid and the event actually served as a case study for social contagion in an academic paper written 5 years later. Dennis Nilsen was a serial killer active from 1978-1983. During that time, he preyed on young men and boys in London, murdering at least 12, but potentially as many as 16. All of his murders were committed at one of two homes where he lived. Nilsen was known to strangle his victims, and sometimes drown them, before ritualistically bathing them and keeping them in his home for periods of time. When he finished with them he'd burn their bodies and flush them down the toilet. Nilsen was caught in 1983. Nilsen was also known as the Kindly Killer and the Muswell Hill Murderer.

Welcome to the first of two updates we're publishing this week covering stories we've covered over the past couple of years. Today's updatisode provides current standings of the murders of Laci and Conner Peterson.
We're covering the tragic incident at Dyatlov Pass that occurred in the Ural Mountains in 1959 leaving 9 young adventurers dead. The group was comprised of mostly students from the Ural Polytechnical Institute. What was meant to be a three week trek to help them earn the next higher certification for their hiking and outdoors careers ended up being their last in a confusing tragedy that still has people questioning exactly what happened on that mountaintop all those years ago. Bourbon tasting until 20m in- Story begins at around the 20m mark. Today's episode is brought to you by Broken Barrel Whiskey. Shout out to Seth Benheim and his team for the sample bottles he sent over, we're excited to review them over the next few episodes and really enjoyed the bottle of 116 proof we tried at the beginning of this episode. Dennis Rader was also known as the BTK Killer o BTK Strangler. BTK stood for Bind, Torture, Kill because of how he killed his victims. Rader murdered 10 people from 1974 to 1991, including men, women, and children. The murders went unsolved for YEARS- obviously since they spanned a nearly 20 year period, but Rader wasn't caught immediately after the last one in 1991, he wasn't caught for another FOURTEEN YEARS, and only then after he started sending hints to the police that ultimately led to his arrest. Tonight we’re talking about the Gulf Breeze alien sightings from the late 1980s. These sightings, so famous that even fucking FOX MOULDER from the X Files wrote a report about them at one point, still divide opinions among anyone that sees the photographs and the 1:38 video Ed and Frances Walters claim they captured over a six month period from November of 1987 through March of 1988. They claim these sightings plagued them for just these six months, then completely disappeared, and today whether or not it’s real or a hoax still has just about anyone familiar with the story divided.
Today we're covering the grisly murder of pregnant Shannann Watts and her two daughters- perpetrated by her own husband and their father. Today, we’re taking a deep dive into the case where a man, supposedly desperate for a life with his mistress, perpetrated some of the most disgusting acts we've covered. This is our final episode of our six part series on Jonestown. In this episode we cover Jones moving to Jonestown and the downfall of Jonestown and his followers.
In the fifth episode of our SIX part series on Jonestown, we're covering the time period immediately preceding the Peoples Temple's relocation to Guyana. This covers Jones's growing paranoia, increased control over his congregation, and the growing sense of crisis he was fostering within his fellowship as he planned their move.
In Part 4 of our series on Jonestown, we take a deep dive into the era when Jones began abusing sex and drugs in the years leading up to his preparation to leave for Guyana. This episode takes us up to the year 1973 as we talk through the impact his addictions took on his family and the church.
In the third part of our deep dive into Jonestown and the events leading up to the catastrophic mass casualty event associated with it, we dive deeper into the work Jones did in Indianapolis from the time Peoples Temple was officially formed in their new building all the way up to their move to California. This is likely the halfway mark because it's looking like our "4 parter" is morphing into a 6 part deep dive. Source for this episode is Jim Guinn's Book, ' The Road to Jonestown: Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple'
In the second part of our deep dive into Jonestown and the events leading up to the catastrophic mass casualty event associated with it, we dive deeper into Jim Jones early life from high school, through college, and up until he formed his first church and moved it into a permanent home in Bloomington. Source for this episode is Jim Guinn's Book, ' The Road to Jonestown: Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple'
Welcome to part 1 of a 4 parter on The People’s Temple, it’s founder Jim Jones, and the supposedly idyllic town called Jonestown Jim Jones convinced his followers to follow him to in Guyana. As many of you know we’re located in Indiana, so there are some localish implications with this story that begin in Indiana, transferred to San Francisco to set up it’s home base, and finished in the Peoples Temple Agricultural Project, commonly referred to as Jonestown, all the way to South America, where the members of the People’s Temple, a religious organization that began with Jim Jones preaching about Jesus and social reform in 1955 and ended with the mass murder of 918 people in Jonestown on November 18, 1978, in the single largest mass casualty event involving US citizens at the time.
We're covering a few short stories about cannibalism this week, and we have ONE QUESTION- Oklahoma, are you guys ok? Because there are red flags. Everywhere.
Our hiatus is over! We come back this week to bring you the joyous tales of Sasquatch sightings! Last week we told you alllll about the Squatchman, this week we bring you some of the feel good stories he's put out to the world. From our mouths, to your earholes. Enjoy.
So who is the big guy? None other than Mr. Sasquatch himself, the Yippee Kayay Yeti, Big Foot, Swamp Ape, all of the above? Stories about a large, apelike creature roaming the world dating back all through history. Different cultures have given it different names, but they all describe a creature that walks on two legs, is covered in hair, and oftentimes is accompanied by a strong, foul smell. Today’s episode is going to focus on the sightings reported throughout the US of what we call BigFoot. Speculation on whether this creature is real runs the gamut from being an unidentified ape species that’s just really clever and hiding, to being an alien, to something even stranger. Join us today, as we introduce you to the folklore around him and start talking through whether or not he’s fact, fiction, or something in between. ***Audio alert- we had an issue with audio on this one, recorded it through the MacBook microphone, so bear with us. Quality will be back to normal next week*** Patty Hearst, granddaughter of media tycoon William Randolph Hearst, was a young heiress, living with her boyfriend Steven Weed in Berkeley in the winter of 1974 when a knock at the door changed her life. After her boyfriend escaped a group of intruders sent from the Symbionese Liberation Army, Patricia was thrown into the trunk of their escape car and then held hostage for nearly two months, until she finally released a recording stating that she had joined the SLA to fight. Two weeks later she was caught on video in the middle of a bank robbery where she clearly had joined with the SLA to commit the crime. For the new year, we're starting out with a listener request and a guest appearance! This episode features Lauren DeMuth, renowned expert and former resident of Georgia. Lake Lanier is an idyllic summer wonderland, complete with water coming from waterfalls of Georgia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. The lake hosts millions of visitors every summer who flock there for boating, swimming, camping, hiking, and all around good ole Southern fun. What they don’t plan on are the hundreds of boating and water fatalities that occur on the lake. The wonderland murders took place in a townhome in Laurel Canyon, CA. On July 1, 1981 four people were murdered in the drug house of a known gang, The Wonderland Gang. It’s thought that five people were initially targeted, but only 4 were unfortunate enough to be home at the time of the slaying. Ron Launius, Billy DeVerell, Joy Miller, and Barbara Richardson all died of blunt force trauma in a murder that LAPD officers would later say was bloodier than the Tate-LaBianca murders. Although 3 people were accused, including famous porn star John Holmes, technically these murders are still unsolved today. These were called witch trials, but what happened across first Europe and then in America, most predominantly in Salem was more criminal than supernatural, the result of politics and mass hysteria. The Salem Witch Trials have left a lasting legacy when we think of colonial America. Born from the fury of the European witch hunts dating back as early to the 1400s to 1782 spanning across Germany, France, Switzerland, and Italy (just to name a few,) the witch hunts firmly took hold in Salem, Massachusettes when in 1689 Sam Parris’s family was catapulted to the spotlight (and not in a good way) because his daughter Betty, niece Abigail, and their friend Ann started to play around with fortune telling. This child’s play resulted in multiple murders blessed by the church and the community and innumerable rumors and general unease across a Salem already divided from June of 1692 until May of 1693. This case goes by a few names, the Ammons Haunting, the demon house, or the 200 demon house. Regardless of the name, though, the story is terrifying. In November of 2011 the Ammons family moved into an unassuming white house on Carolina Street in Gary. What followed is seemingly straight out of a horror movie. It started with swarms of black flies, strange noises, levitation, and ultimately possession. The family fled the home in 2012 and moved to Indianapolis after multiple failed exorcisms. The house was famously purchased by Zac Bagans in 2014, then demolished in 2016 after he filmed a documentary titled Demon House in 2018 that was met with reviews that ranged from “hooey” to the most compelling paranormal documentary ever. For our Halloween episode, we put it to you guys to recommend some topics. We had a recommendation on our instagram to cover Shadow People. We’ve done this to a degree in the past, but always along with other strange figures. This time, we’re going in depth, discussing what shadow people are, what they aren’t, and what they do. Come hang with us for a spooky episode tonight. The Berkshire abductions and UFO sightings took place on Labor Day in 1969 across several cities in New England. These sightings are especially interesting because there were multiple sightings in multiple areas. Even more interesting is there are witnesses corroborating the stories of several of those who claim to have been abducted. This is a real creepy one, just in time for Halloween. So strap in, and hang out with us while we talk through this one. We're finishing up our coverage of Epstein with Dani getting deep into the weeds of what was found during the death investigation and potential theories on what actually happened. We had a lot of technical difficulties during this episode- we actually had to record it in 4 chunks, which is why it took so long to post. That said, in this episode you'll notice a few gaps (immediately followed by us groaning about the technical issues).
Our coverage of Epstein continues in our socially distanced part 3 of this 4 part series. We're covering the case from the time the local West Palm PD turned it over to the FBI all the way up to Epstein's death in a New York prison. Skip ahead to around the six minute mark if you want to get straight to the bourbon review and the crime. Our coverage of Epstein continues in this episode with a focus on the victims who initially came forward in Palm Beach. We dive into the trafficking cases that drove the first investigation into Epstein's illicit dealings up until the case was turned over to the FBI. We've had a lot of requests for coverage on Epstein. We've put it off for a while given the sheer amount of content being put out about him, but given the new developments with Ghislaine Maxwell and additional stories about trafficking coming to light, we're finally starting to tackle this one. Part 1 explores Epstein's early life leading up to the point in time where he meets Maxwell. We’re covering the disappearance of the Jamison family. On October 8 of 2009, the family disappeared after visiting a 40 acre plot of land in the Panola mountains for the second time in as many days. But, no one immediately knew Bobby, Sherilynn, or their young daughter Maddyson were missing. Due to their tendency to make spur of the moment travel decisions and the secluded area where the property sat, police wouldn’t be notified until 8 days later when their truck was found, abandoned, with their small dog locked inside. After multiple days spent searching and calling in all possible backup, they finally accepted that they wouldn’t find the family. Theories ran the gamut from murder/suicide, to cult activities, to drugs, to organized crime, but even with the discovery of the family’s remains in 2013, we’re left with more questions than answers. We'll bring you our regularly scheduled episode on Sunday, but for today, we're taking a conspiracy break! We talk pizzagate, whether or not Britney Spears is being held against her will, how long does Ghyslain Maxwell have before she too gets Epsteined, and an update on the tragic Vallows case.
It's part 2 of Charles Dederich and Synanon. Join us where the story of this cult left off last week as we dive deeper into their practices, their use of snakes, tax scheming, and ultimate downfall. Sources: https://www.anb.org/view/10.1093/anb/9780198606697.001.0001/anb-9780198606697-e-1501294 http://www.paulmorantz.com/cult/the-history-of-synanon-and-charles-dederich/
The cult we’re talking about of course is Synanon, the drug rehab program turned cult founded by Charles Dederich, in 1958. Dederich was an alcoholic who had successfully completed AA where he saw that those addicted to drugs weren’t welcome into AA meetings due to the thought that drug addiction was so different than alcohol addiction. Because of this, Dederich decided to form his own group that would cater to the specific needs of those addicted to drugs. While it started as a 2 year residential program for drug and alcohol rehabilitation, by the 1960s it had essentially become a commune where people were looking for self-actualization. By the 70s it was known as the Church of Synanon and by 1991 it had completely disbanded after legal issues that ranged from losing their tax free status, to terrorism, to some of the members being charged with attempted murder. Laci Peterson was living the classic middle class American dream. She’d married her college sweetheart, Scott Peterson. She and Scott opened a bar and sold it after college, then moved back to Modesto, Ca where Laci was from to begin a family. Laci worked as a part-time substitute teacher while her husband worked full time for a fertilizer company. In December of 2002, life seemed even more perfect for the young couple as Laci was eight months pregnant with the couple’s son Conner. Her idyllic life was soon to take a turn; however, as the last anyone saw Laci was December 23, 2002 when the couple went to visit her half-sister, Amy for Scott’s monthly haircut. Her husband Scott would report her missing later that night and her body, along with the body of Conner, and the family dog wouldn’t be found until mid-April of the following year. The investigation and the trial that followed after captured a nation, and was nothing short of harrowing with each new revelation uncovered. Martha was 15 years old at the time of her murder in 1975 Greenwich, CT. Martha was found in her yard, beaten and stabbed to death on Halloween Day with a golf club. A club that would later be linked to a neighbor family with 2 teenage boys, Thomas and Michael Skakel, cousins to the Kennedy family. Despite evidence supporting Martha’s involvement with the boys and the club linking the younger son, Michael, to the murder, no one would stand trial for 25 years. ***PLEASE BEAR WITH US ON AUDIO QUALITY, WILL BE BETTER NEXT WEEK*** We had some serious connection issues when we recorded this episode that causes Morgan's vocals to filter in and out, along with some added delays. We've scrubbed the audio as best we could to cut out prolonged silences, but be aware there may still be some that we missed. The skunk ape is a large humanoid ape that stands upright on two feet that has had numerous sightings throughout the SouthEastern US, but is primarily linked to the Florida Everglades. The skunk ape is reportedly large, males get up to 6.5 - 8 feet tall and 450 lbs, with the females a bit smaller at 5-6 ft and 250 lbs. They’re said to have dense reddish orange or black fur and glowing red eyes. It’s most notable chracteristic; however, is the stench that accompanies all sightings of it. The National Park Service, who we learned a couple episodes ago is nothing but truthful and straightforward, claims the skunk ape is nothing more than a local myth. But if that’s the case- why are there so many sightings going back hundreds of years and what are the images of the mysterious creature caught on camera?
