In October 2001, the dismembered remains of seventy-one-year-old Morris Black were found floating in Galveston Bay. A few days later, Black's neighbor, Robert Durst, was arrested on suspicion of murder and released on $250,000 bail. After posting bail, Durst jumped bail and disappeared for six weeks, before being arrested by Pennsylvania authorities at the end of November. In the years that followed, investigators and prosecutors began combing through Durst's life, discovering disturbing connections between the excentric millionaire and the mysterious disappearances and deaths of several people who were once close to Durst. Robert Durst had been a suspect in the murder of Morris Black, but was it possible he was in fact a multiple murderer who'd evaded detection for decades?Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAssociated Press. 2001. 9 years after the debut of his remarkable docuseries “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst”, which included a stunning confession by Durst on a hot mic, acclaimed filmmaker Andrew Jarecki (“Capturing the Friedmans”) is still at it. In April 2024, HBO released the first of his new six-episode series, “The Jinx - Part Two”, an investigation every bit as chilling and riveting as Part One... and maybe even more disturbing.   Joining Ken on the pod to talk about his epic saga of the New York real estate tycoon turned murderer, Andrew explores the backstory of Durst's now famous five-word confession (“Killed them all, of course”) and takes us through the Los Angeles trial that found Durst once again trying to beat a murder charge. Along with a fascinating cast of characters, Part Two explores the dark theme of complicity by Durst's family and friends who, time and time again, chose money and loyalty over doing the right thing. One might say about Andrew's quest, “Exposed them all, of course”.   “The Jinx - Part Two” is nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series   Hidden Gems: “Darwin's Nightmare” “Screwball”   Follow: @andrew.jarecki on Instagram @topdocspod on Instagram and twitter/X   The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix.

Recently went on William Ramsey Investigates to discuss Andrew Jarecki's documentaries "Capturing the Friedmans" and "The Jinx". At times the discussion goes off into some conspiratorial directions! However, there is some good information about Jarecki, his father's ties to Epstein. It may explain why he decided to begin his career as a documentarian, making an apologist flick for a pedophile and his son that abused 17 children (according to Jesse Friedman) in Great Neck, NY in the 1980's. For more information on the case against Arnold and Jesse Friedman - "Capturing the Friedman - What Was Left Out" - https://youtu.be/qjYWOZgMbHQ?si=sFKgP2NuYOU_gfAQRoss Cheit "The Witch-Hunt Narrative" - https://a.co/d/3tpInhFThank you, Patrons!Theresa Parrino, Sanny O'Brien, DSamlam, Janet Gardner, Suzanne Kniffin, Iriana Campbell, Jennifer Klearman, Patricia Linz, Nancy, Judy Brown, Pat Brooks, Linda Lazzarro, Susan Hicks, Jeff Meadors, Donna, Faith Peeples, Jennifer Powell, Cindy G Yurts, Kay Bee, Dana Natale, Debra Couture, Cindy Poschesci, Riverdale Pilates, Luanne Miller, Rachbaum, Kevin Crecy, Renee Chavez, Angela Smith, Melba Pourteau, Julia K Thomas, JS, Stephanie Roach, Stark Stuff, Robyn Ray, K, Kayce Taylor, Yvette Jockin, Karen Cote, Tammie Sheppherd, JenTile, LadyLex, Shari Davis, AussieDood, Katrina Hetherington, Susan Swan, Dean, GiGi 5, Susan, Manjit Ender, Mentour Mentor's Mentee, Kee Sardi, Dana Natale, Marie Patrignani, Bewildered Beauty, MotherofHens, Pepper, Joan, Pat Dell, Blythe, Laura, Plai Braik, Lorraine R, Sandra Guse Van Zealand, Isa, Krissy G, Michelle B, TB , Maria, Erin Faesen, Regan Johnson, AJ Foster, Hugh Ashman, Melissa V, Heyy Manny, Victoria Gray Bross, Toni Woodland, Danbrit, Evan Scott, Holly from Dallas, Kenny Haines, Maureen P and Toni Natalie.Get access to exclusive content & support the podcast by becoming a Patron today! https://patreon.com/robertaglasstruecrimereport Or throw a tip in the tip jar! https://buymeacoffee.com/robertaglass Or support Roberta by sending a donation via Venmo. https://venmo.com/robertaglass

Did the Biden Panic Help Biden? [TEASER]

Over two million people tuned in to see if an 81-year-old man would fall on his face at Thursday night's press conference. Instead, they received a deep-dive lecture on foreign policy. That's more than the TV audience for the Oscars. Now, Democrats are finally pushing back against Trump's fascist blueprint, Project 2025, with their own 100-day plan for 2025, most of which can only be passed if Democrats win control of both chambers of Congress. Still, Biden voicing these solutions while the world scrutinizes his every step and gaffe promotes a culture of change we desperately need to rebuild our democracy. Much of Biden's plan can also be implemented on the state level, where Democrats have increasingly expanded their power, thanks to grassroots efforts. These next four weeks, as we head into the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, will be the last window of opportunity to replace Biden. Expect a continued bloodbath in the press as centrist Democrats, allegedly paid off by megadonors, continue their sabotage of Biden's campaign and pro-labor agenda to rebuild the middle class. As Minnesota House candidate Will Stencil wrote on Twitter: “What makes this so depressing is that if you stop doing theater criticism on the strength of his voice or whatever, this is a clip of a US president strongly defending a working-class economic boom he successfully fought to create. And no one wants to hear that or seems to care.” Meanwhile, leading Black women voices, like Nikole Hannah-Jones, creator of the 1619 Project, and Stacey Abrams, continue to push back. Jones wrote on Twitter: “This is what I am hearing from so many Black Americans and especially Black women who feel 1) that their vote, decision, and concerns are being undermined by non-Black people in the Democratic Party, 2) that too many people reporting and commenting do not seem to understand the stakes, and 3) that perhaps the polling is reflecting a Democratic Party that is attacking its own candidate rather than the opposing one.” Several new polls show Biden ahead of Trump, and reports say that his press conference reassured jittery megadonors. Was the Biden panic ultimately good for Biden? Behind the scenes, years before Robert Durst's hot mic murder confession made it to air, investigators in the Susan Berman case had been reviewing evidence uncovered by the producers of “The Jinx.” And as America grew transfixed with the 2015 TV series, the man connected to three high-profile crimes felt the heat.Once the millionaire fugitive was captured, prosecutors began building their legal case by tying together two crimes. They argued Berman knew Durst was behind the disappearance of his first wife, Kathleen, and he murdered Berman to keep her quiet. But to prove their theory, they'll have to get it out of Durst's many loyal friends and associates. In “The Jinx - Part Two,” director Andrew Jarecki reveals in real time what was happening as the original HBO series shook up the cold case. With extensive jailhouse recordings and courtroom footage, the sequel dissects the murder trial and seeks to answer the final mystery: what happened to Durst's money?OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "THE JINX - PART TWO" BEGIN IN THE FINAL 10 MINUTES OF THE EPISODE.In Crime of the Week: inhospitable. In episode #107 your favorite CEOs Taylor Graham and Chloe Willemsen are sitting down with an entrepreneurial force to be wreckened with... Nancy Jarecki Nancy has always played by her own rules. She's the innovator behind the multiple award- winning company bettybeauty, inc., was born in Kansas, studied art in Texas, and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as an artist. Recognized as one of the up and coming Southern California artists by LA Weekly, Nancy showcased her art at numerous shows and in corporate art collections. As Nancy continued on her entrepreneurial path in Los Angeles, she was tapped in early 1986 by the creators of a startup cable network to help develop and launch a cable network called Movietime. The following year she was an instrumental part of the launch team for the network now known as E! Entertainment Television. During this time, Nancy met her husband, Andrew Jarecki, who was visiting Los Angeles to launch his company, MovieFone. She soon moved to New York to join him, helping him develop the business, and starting their new family. In 1999, the Jareckis sold MovieFone to AOL Time Warner started a movie production company as well as moved their family to Rome, Italy, where they were completing work on the Oscar-nominated film Capturing the Friedmans documentary. While in Rome, where they lived for two years, Nancy had an experience that gave her the idea to start her own innovative beauty products company, bettybeauty, inc. Visiting a hair salon, she noticed women leaving with small “take home” bags. When she inquired as to what they were, the receptionist told her they were a bit of extra hair color for “the hair down there – to make it match!” Realizing that women across America would love a commercially-available product to color this important area, Nancy began developing the first safe color for the hair down there to fulfill this unmet need in the beauty market. Nancy Jarecki, an entrepreneur and mother of three, didn't know what was hitting her as she walked the red carpet at Ali's Head Case premiere. What she thought was a strange little fainting spell was actually a subarachnoid hemorrhage. And while almost 50% of people do not make it, Nancy did. She shares the story of that day's events, the brain surgeries and many months of recovery, all of which, according to her doctors, were made better by her attitude and optimism. She seems to think that having part of her skull sewn into her abdominal wall for “safe keeping” is a hoot. And it kinda is! Let's just say that keeping a sense of humor is also part of the story. What a Creep: Robert Durst  Season 13, Episode 8 The Jinx Creep! (Kathleen & Robert Durst) In 2015, HBO released a docu-series that took the nation by storm. The first media interview with Robert Durst, the son of billionaire real estate magnate Seymour Durst, in decades at the time. The then 72-year-old Durst has been accused of three murders in his life and seemed to use his money and privilege to avoid any real penalty. The filmmaker Andrew Jarecki was obsessed with Durst's story, so his 2010 film All Good Things starring Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst was inspired by the story of Durst's first marriage Kathie McCormack who disappeared in 1982 and was declared dead in 1990. Since then, he was accused of murder two more times and seemed to be made of Teflon. He is now serving time for first-degree murder and will soon be on trial for the murder of his first wife. Will he make it long enough to face a jury of his peers again? Now hear from the star and host of MTV's hit series CATFISH: THE TV SHOW, Nev Schulman, about his experiences and perspectives on this evolving medium. In late 2007, filmmakers Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost sensed a story unfolding as they began to film the life of Ariel's brother, Nev. They had no idea that their project would lead to the most exhilarating and unsettling months of their lives. A reality thriller that is a shocking product of our times, Catfish is a riveting story of love, deception and grace within a labyrinth of online intrigue. The film was produced by academy award nominated filmmaker, Andrew Jarecki and was executive produced by Brett Ratner. Prior to CATFISH, Schulman was a New York City photographer and filmmaker, and the youngest member of Supermarché. Today we recap an all-time classic, Capturing The Friedmans, and get into a lively debate about how this documentary stacks up in today’s world. Was director Andrew Jarecki irresponsible in how he handled the footage and information he had? Was there a bias towards helping Jesse? Will our guest Curtis Cook and Paco ever see eye-to-eye on this doc? Listen to find out!The true crime documentary Capturing The Friedmans was directed by Andrew Jarecki. Released in 2003, this was Jarecki’s first film and was subsequently nominated for an Academy Award. While preparing a documentary about children’s birthday party entertainers, Jarecki learned that professional clown David Friedman, was the son and brother of two men who had been convicted of child sexual abuse in a high-profile 1980s criminal trial. Using home videos made by the Friedman family before and during the trial, Jarecki explores the conflicting stories of the accused, the alleged victims and the investigators as this modern day Greek tragedy unfolds on film. There are many documentaries like Capturing The Friedmans but somehow this doc is entirely unforgettable. Our guest Curtis Cook is a writer and standup comedian living in Los Angeles. He’s puked after a keg stand on a show called Flophouse, traveled through an Ebola checkpoint for a segment on Vice News, and awkwardly interacting with Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein during a sketch on Portlandia. On the latest episode of the Talkhouse Film podcast, Academy Award nominee J.C. Chandor, the director of Margin Call and All is Lost, is in conversation with Borderline Films' Josh Mond, a producer turned writer-director whose debut feature, James White, is out now. The two friends discuss Mond's personal and professional path to this semi-autobiographical film inspired by his own experiences with his late mother as she battled cancer, while their chat also touches on: Mond's aborted first feature, a sex comedy that was to star Jonah Hill; which of his collaborators had a full beard at 13; and how The Jinx, Andrew Jarecki's sensational doc miniseries about Robert Durst, threw a wrench into James White's editing process. In this episode, I have the pleasure of chatting with the very talented Maggie Kiley ("Brightest Star," "Some Boys Don't Leave," "We Own The Night," "All Good Things"). I first met Maggie at the Austin Film Festival, where her directorial feature debut, "Brightest Star," was premiering. Her feature film was inspired by her short film "Some Boys Don't Leave," which was a number one selling short film on iTunes. We talk about everything from her beginnings in backyard performances to taking part in AFI's prestigious Directing Workshop For Women to directing her first feature two months after giving birth to her second child. BRIGHTEST STAR will be screening in theaters and digitally starting January 31. MAGGIE KILEY'S BIO Filmmaker and actress Maggie Kiley most recently directed and co-wrote the feature film BRIGHTEST STAR which was inspired by her award winning short film SOME BOYS DON’T LEAVE.  As a recipient of the Panavision New Filmmaker Grant, BRIGHTEST STAR was shot on 35mm in New York City and stars Chris Lowell, Rose McIver, Jessica Szohr, Clark Gregg and Allison Janney.  BRIGHTEST STAR premiered at the Austin Film Festival and will be released theatrically and digitally in late January 2014. Maggie was one of eight women selected to take part in American Film Institute’s prestigious Directing Workshop for Women and it was through her participation in this program that she made SOME BOYS DON'T LEAVE.  Maggie received the Student Visionary Award at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival and the Alexis Award for Best Emerging Student Filmmaker at Palm Springs International Shortfest.  SOME BOYS DON'T LEAVE was the number one selling short film on Itunes for several weeks, has played at over 40 festivals and continues to screen both nationally and internationally.  Currently, Maggie is developing her second feature, Dial-a-Prayer, to shoot in Michigan in the Spring of 2014.  She is also attached to direct the film 12 Reasons Why I Love Her, based on the graphic novel from Oni Press/Closed on Mondays Entertainment. As an actress, Maggie has appeared in film, television and on stage.  She has worked extensively at Atlantic Theater Company in New York where she is one of just 40 ensemble members.  Maggie received her BFA in Theater from New York University and was invited to join the critically acclaimed ensemble after graduating.  Maggie has been fortunate to work with such great film and television directors as James Gray, Lesli Linka Glatter, Daisy von Scherler Mayer and Documentarian Nathaniel Kahn.  She recently appeared in Andrew Jarecki's  ALL GOOD THINGS alongside Ryan Gosling, Kirsten Dunst and Frank Langella.

O terror (de casa mal-assombrada) The Woman in Black, de James Watkins.

Director Andrew Jarecki on the making of his first narrative feature, All Good Things. The film, starring Ryan Gosling, Kirsten Dunst and Frank Langella is inspired by the bizarre, real life story of Robert Durst — the wealthy son of a New York real estate magnate — whose wife went missing in 1982 and whose good friend is murdered years later. Not tried for either case, Durst was later was arrested in Texas after his neighbor's dismembered body was found floating in Galveston Bay. Durst, who had been living there disguised as a mute woman, pled self defense and got three years in prison for illegal dismemberment of a body. Today he's free. Jarecki talks about the threatened lawsuit by the Durst family organization and how Robert Durst actually liked the film.
