Before Patty Hearst appeared as an actress in John Waters' movies, she captivated America on the silver screen as a hostage terrorized by the Symbionese Liberation Army. When the newspaper heiress was kidnapped by the radical organization in 1974, the country sympathized with her plight. But after just a few months, the SLA's guns weren't pointing at Patty anymore. Suddenly, Patty was firing her own weapons during fistfights and bank robberies as a member of the same terrorist group that once kept her locked in a closet. In court, Patty claimed she was brainwashed and that she played along for her own safety. It's true that Patty Hearst gave the performance of a lifetime — but we still don't know which part of her life was the performance. References to my disease should be ignored. The "Peoples' Action Network" sounds like the Symbionese Liberation Army. On at least one day last summer they expressed interest in making a health insurance company more accountable to its customers. In Your Medicare Benefits 2024, we learn how Medicare will help you if you have more than one serious medical condition and need expert assistance. Domestic terrorism and college campus protests are not new phenomena. In part one of this two-part series, we turn back the clock to the early 1970s and discus the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA), a leftist group based in California who murdered politicians, robbed banks, bombed police cars and kidnapped Patty Hearst. Who were they and why did they target the Hearst Family? Was Hearst a brainwashed victim suffering from Stockholm Syndrome or was she a radical urban guerrilla who willingly joined the cause? Retired California Highway Patrol Chief Mark Garrett and retired DEA Special Agent in Charge Bill Bodner talk through the details of one of the strangest criminal organizations and crime sprees our country has scene.

The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 5th study session on The Zebra Murders: A Season of Killing, Racial Madness and Civil Rights. Authored by Bennett Cohen, Racist Suspect. Prentice Sanders is classified as a black male and is credited with serving almost 40 full years with the San Francisco Police Department. This murder case reportedly involved random White people being killed by random black dudes. These killings took place at the same time that both the Black Panther Party and the nefarious Symbionese Liberation Army were in operation in the Bay Area. In addition to these infamous social clubs, Rev. Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple were well established in San Francisco's Fillmore district by 1973. In fact, Jones talked to his mostly black congregation about these homicides. After one week of study, Gus concluded that the White author, Cohen, is the primary hand writing this book. Mr. Sanders probably retold his life and times to this White Man, but had no authority in constructing how this book was written. Gus could be wrong. Last week, we learned that the Muslim mosque frequented by several of the black males suspected of being involved in the killings is on the same street at the Peoples Temple. Right next door actually. On January 28, 1974, the "zebra murders" resumed and intensified with 5 White people shot in one night. SFPD began "stopping and frisking" random black males, and USC star and eventual 4-time Super Bowl champion Lynn Swann and his 3 black males friends were assaulted, insulted and arrested. The so called "ghetto reward" went unclaimed, as no black people stepped forward to "snitch." #TheCOWS15Years #HammerinHankAaron INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

Last week we learned about two black male suspects for the killings. Larry Green and JC Simon has no criminal record, but were affiliated with a "radial" Nation of Islam sect. The White author talks about radical black "rage" and titles chapter six: "Revenge." We're told that black people have a distinct way of running - even when fleeing a crime scene. And we're told the negro murder suspects visit a muslim mosque at the corner of Geary and Fillmore. The Peoples Temple was at located at 1859 Geary Boulevard. Gus thinks Jim Jones had to be involved with the "Zebra killings" because of the proximity of the murders and because he was suspiciously quiet about these happenings. #NoNiggrasAtTheChristmasParty #CaliforniaStateHistory INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the debut study session on The Zebra Murders: A Season of Killing, Racial Madness and Civil Rights. Authored by Prentice E. Sanders and Bennett Cohen. Sanders is classified as a black male and is credited with serving almost 40 full years with the San Francisco Police Department. He joined the force in 1964, at a time when there were very few black officers - and that small number had tiny tenure. Sanders was appointed to the investigate the "zebra murders" towards the end of 1973. This case reportedly involved random White people being killed by random black dudes. Gus selected this book because we've spent half the year reading 2 different Jonestown books - written by White men, where neither author mentioned the "zebra murders." Gus found that fascinating, appalling, and unacceptable. **Importantly, it is widely reported that although these killings are reportedly black males killing White people, that is not why these events are branded the "zebra murders." This name reportedly originates from the "Z" radio frequency officers used to communicate about this crime. This may or may not be true. #CaliforniaStateHistory #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

Brad Schreiber: Revolution's End: The Patty Hearst Kidnapping, Mind Control, and the Secret History of Donald DeFreeze and the SLAForty years after the Patty Hearst "trial of the century," the true story of the events, including the beginning of police militarization in America.Revolution's End fully explains the most famous kidnapping in US history, detailing Patty Hearst's relationship with Donald DeFreeze, known as Cinque, head of the Symbionese Liberation Army. Not only did the heiress have a sexual relationship with DeFreeze while he was imprisoned; she didn't know he was an informant and a victim of prison behavior modification.Neither Hearst nor the white radicals who followed DeFreeze realized that he was molded by a CIA officer and allowed to escape, thanks to collusion with the California Department of Corrections. DeFreeze's secret mission: infiltrate and discredit Bay Area anti-war radicals and the Black Panther Party, the nexus of seventies activism. When the murder of the first black Oakland schools superintendent failed to create an insurrection, DeFreeze was alienated from his controllers and decided to become a revolutionary, since his life was in jeopardy.Revolution's End finally elucidates the complex relationship of Hearst and DeFreeze and proves that one of the largest shootouts in US history, which killed six members of the SLA in South Central Los Angeles, ended when the LAPD set fire to the house and incinerated those six radicals on live television, nationwide, as a warning to American leftists.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Over more than half a century as a writer for the London Daily Express and the Times of London, British-born Ivor Davis covered major stories in North America. He penned a weekly entertainment column for the New York Times Syndicate for over 15 years, interviewing some of the biggest names in show business, from Cary Grant to Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton to Tom Cruise and Muhammad Ali. In 1962 he was smuggled onto the campus of the riot-torn University of Mississippi when James Meredith became the first black student to be enrolled --accompanied by 127 --yes 127-- US attorneys--Days of rioting followed with two killed--including one foreign journalist. Three years later Davis  was in the front lines as Los Angeles' Watts riots erupted. In l964, Davis was the only British daily newspaper correspondent to cover The Beatles' first American tour from start to finish, given unparalleled access to John, Paul, George and Ringo on the road, in their hotel, and during long nights of card and Monopoly games as they talked frankly about their bizarre new life. He also ghosted a regular newspaper column for George Harrison. His first-hand, insider's memoir, the award-winning The Beatles and Me On Tour, 60th Anniversary Book, was published  in February. It is a fascinating journey back in time where for the first time he chronicles, frankly and humorously, 34 days with the world's most famous band on the road—at a critical moment in the history of rock. The anniversary edition was published on Feb 9th this year. Davis covered Robert Kennedy's 1968 presidential bid and was in the kitchen in the Ambassador Hotel the night Senator Kennedy was assassinated.  He was one of the Boys on the Bus chronicling the life of actor-turned-politician Ronald Reagan, first in his campaign for governor of California, then for president. He was a co-author of the 1969 political book Divided They Stand, which chronicled the Presidential election; and witnessed some of the biggest trials in American history: Sirhan Sirhan, convicted of killing Bobby Kennedy in 1969; black-power militant Angela Davis, acquitted of murder in l972; a year later, Daniel Ellsberg's trial for leaking the Pentagon Papers, and, in 1976, he was in San Francisco to see heiress Patty Hearst convicted of robbery after being kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army.   His new true crime book, “The Devil in My Friend: The Inside Story of a Malibu Murder.”  It is an account of the famous Eighties trial of Malibu engineer Frederick George Roehler,  who was convicted of the murder of his wife and young stepson after an almost year-long trial in the Santa Barbara Courthouse in May l982. The killings took place close by—at Santa Cruz Island. The new book will be published this year on May 7th.   https://ivordavisbooks.com/ Connect more:  https://www.chonacas.com/podcast/ https://www.instagram.com/shesallovertheplacepodcast/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/katiechonacas/   I hope you enjoyed the episode, please share with one person! You couldn't make up the kidnapping of Patty Hearst by the Symbionese Liberation Army in February 1974. The granddaughter of William Randolph Hearst, America's most divisive media baron, was kidnapped in Berkeley (of all places) by domestic terrorists who demand that Hearst feed the poor in exchange for the 19 year-old woman. That, in itself, was quite a story in an America still embroiled in both Vietnam and all the other aftershocks of the Sixties. But then Patty Hearst went rogue and appeared to join the SLA, participating in the heist of a San Francisco bank and changing her name to Tania, in honor of Che Guevara's girlfriend. Such was the paranoid America of early 1974. And, according, Roger Rapoport, author of the new novel SEARCHING FOR PATTY HEARST, such is the paranoid America of early 2024. History doesn't quite repeat itself, Rapoport explained to me. But it certainly rhymes, particularly when one compares the violent left wing cults of the early 1970's with the violent right wing cults of the early 2020's. Award winning film producer, publisher, author and investigative journalist, Roger Rapoport has covered the Patty Hearst story for half a century. From his front page story in the Wall Street Journal about life on a Ford Assembly line in his junior college summer of 1967 to his fascinating coverage of the aviation industry in Angle of Attack, Roger Rapoport has received many honors for his groundbreaking reporting over the past five decades. But perhaps the highest accolade of all is a comment made years ago by one of his first editors. “Roger's problem is that he doesn't understand the meaning of the word no.” In 1974, Rapoport, a contributor to publications like the Atlantic, Esquire and Rolling Stone, went to work for New Times covering the kidnapping of Patty Hearst, a few blocks from his Berkeley home. His exclusive reporting focused on the life and times of Steve Weed , the fiance the Symbionese Liberation Army left behind as these revolutionaries stuffed the love of Weed's life into a Chevy trunk and sped off into the night. Weed moved into Rapoport's house where they wrote a big advance book together on the case. Shortly before completion the former Princeton marijuana dealer who began an affair with Patty when she was a 16 year old student at the high school where he taught, sued to block publication of the book. The following year one of Rapoport's relatives, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mark Brandler (best known for the Onion Murders trial), presided over a key trial that included Patty Hearst as a defendant with two of the SLA members. After covering the San Francisco Hearst bank robbery trial in 1975 he went on, thirteen years later, to score an exclusive Oakland Tribune with Bill Harris, the man who actually kidnapped Patty Hearst and wound up fleeing cross country with her and his wife Emily Harris. While others let the story rest he interviewed Dr. Thomas Noguchi the coroner to Marilyn Monroe, Janis Joplin and Robert F. Kennedy as well as six of Hearst's fallen Symbionese Liberation Army comrades. Year after year Rapoport continued to pursue people who refused to go public and ultimately became convinced that nonfiction accounts of the kidnapping, including Patty Hearst's own account of her life on the run with her kidnappers, fell short. While continuing to pursue the story behind the “official” version of the case he found time to write biographies of Governors Pat and Jerry Brown, and filmmaker Michael Moore. In the midst of all his research he founded a successful publishing company, became an award winning film producer and screenwriter (Coming Up For Air), and playwright (Old Heart). During this time he wrote for STAT News and Wired, and contributed to the Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, San Jose Mercury News, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency and the Miami Herald. “I wrote this novel,” says Rapoport, ‘because I believed the American public deserved nothing but the truth. Very sorry about the delay. This book took a lot longer that I expected. Hope it was worth the wait.”Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. Happy Birthday, dear Patty, haaaappy birthday to you! Who's Patty, you ask? Why, Patty Hearst, of course! Today not only happens to be Ms. Hearst's birthday, it's also the 50th anniversary of the year she was kidnapped by, and then apparently joined with, a far left domestic terrorist organization. How did that all go down? Guess you'll have to listen to find out...Rob teaches Ray and Daniel about Patty (sorry, Patricia) Hearst's relatively mundane upbringing as an heir to the Hearst journalism fortune; the rise of the Symbionese Liberation Army (most of whom got their start in drama school - yes and motherf*&^ers!); how her status as the granddaughter of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst marked her as a target for the SLA; her tramautic experiences at the hands of the SLA; how Patty's transformation into "Tania" and her seeming cooperation with the SLA shocked the world; the biggest shootout in American history; and the controversial question that continues to surround the aftermath of her kidnapping: did Patty really become a terrorist, or was it a case of Stockholm Syndrome gone horribly awry?If you like what we're doing, please support us on Patreon, or you can subscribe to our bonus content on Apple Podcasts. Fifty years ago, on February 4, 1974, Patty Hearst was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army, and that story, covered thoroughly by a young journalist named Roger Rapoport, quickly became one of the most bizarre and polarizing crimes of an already unsettled time. Now Rapoport has written a novel to explore alternative theories of the crime and to delve into the complex psychology of many of the key actors in the drama. Using the techniques of fiction, Rapoport gives voice to much of the story that fell outside of the bounds of journalistic coverage. With a wry sensibility and insider knowledge, gained through access to the elite and secretive world of the Hearst family and many other behind-the-scenes players, Rapoport goes beyond the tabloid headlines to attempt to answer such questions as: Why did Patty participate in the kidnapping of a high school student just hours before six of the SLA kidnappers were killed in a firefight with the LAPD? Did celebrity coroner Thomas Noguchi mishandle the autopsies of six SLA victims? Why did Patty's lawyers dump her fiancé Steve Weed as a key witness at her trial at the last minute? Join us to test the theory that fiction can offer insights into the truth that reporting can't, and refresh your recollection of the story of Patty Hearst's kidnapping and the totally unexpected twists and turns that story took which carved it into the American psyche. When the murder of the first black Oakland schools superintendent failed to create an insurrection, DeFreeze was alienated from his controllers and decided to become a revolutionary, since his life was in jeopardy.Revolution's End finally elucidates the complex relationship of Hearst and DeFreeze and proves that one of the largest shootouts in US history, which killed six members of the SLA in South Central Los Angeles, ended when the LAPD set fire to the house and incinerated those six radicals on live television, nationwide, as a warning to American leftists. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/1198501/advertisement

In 1970, Dr. Marcus Foster was hired as the first Black superintendent of the Oakland Unified School District. Widely recognized as one of the greatest educators of his generation, he was brought here to help rescue a deeply troubled system. Within three years of his arrival, exactly 50 years ago this month, Foster was assassinated by a shady militant group that called itself the Symbionese Liberation Army. Even though many of the details of Foster's death are known, it remains one of the most mysterious murders of a notoriously turbulent era. Although the SLA supposedly emerged from Berkeley's revolutionary underground, there are some startling connections that point to a far more complicated story. On the anniversary of this tragic killing, this episode celebrates the legacy of Foster's impact on Oakland school and also delves into the murky origins of the group responsible for this death. The first segment features Patanisha Williams, the curator “The Audacity to Believe,” an exhibit about Dr. Marcus Foster currently on display at the African American Museum and Library at Oakland. When the murder of the first black Oakland schools superintendent failed to create an insurrection, DeFreeze was alienated from his controllers and decided to become a revolutionary, since his life was in jeopardy.Revolution's End finally elucidates the complex relationship of Hearst and DeFreeze and proves that one of the largest shootouts in US history, which killed six members of the SLA in South Central Los Angeles, ended when the LAPD set fire to the house and incinerated those six radicals on live television, nationwide, as a warning to American leftists.7 years ago #and, #brad, #control, #defreeze, #donald, #end:, #hearst, #history, #kidnapping, #mind, #of, #patty, #revolution's, #schreiber:, #secret, #sla, #theThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/1198501/advertisement

The phrase "Stockholm Syndrome" is widely recognized, but not many people know its' origin story. This week, Ali tells Ash about the failed Swedish bank heist in which the captor's hostages quickly started sympathizing with them, and how it led to the well known term. She also talks about the infamous kidnapping of Patricia "Patty" Hearst, the granddaughter of American publishing mogul William Hearst. She was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army in 1974 and was found and arrested for committing crimes with them, after having been indoctrinated by the extremist group for 19 months. -We'd love to see you in our Discord, come hang out!-We have super fun merch, go take a look!-Follow us on Instagram and Twitter!-Research assistance by Toni Wormold.-Audio editing by Gaytrice Perdue.-Sources:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/121-the-norrmalmstorg-robbery/id1508098400?i=1000570287280https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/1974/11/25/the-bank-dramaA 1973 Bank Robbery Gave the World 'Stockholm Syndrome'—But There's More to the Story Than Thathttps://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/22387-stockholm-syndromehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockholm_syndromehttps://www.bbc.com/reel/video/p0fbc3fl/is-this-the-true-origin-of-stockholm-syndrome-https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/stockholm-syndrome-kristin-enmark-bank-heist-b2283868.htmlhttps://www.nzherald.co.nz/hawkes-bay-today/news/therapist-challenges-stockholm-syndrome/KMTRRU45XUYDFC2VXJ5D6G5ITU/https://www.stadafa.com/2020/12/stockholm-syndrome-discredit.html#:~:text=The%20phrase%20“Stockholm%20Syndrome”%20was,by%20Jess%20Hill%2C%202019.)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patty_HearstThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4523794/advertisement

(episode unlocked from Patreon due to the increased popularity and skepticism of Programmed to Kill) Today, I look at the concept of serial killers as laid out by the FBI, specifically in Agent John E. Douglas's book 'Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit' and Netflix series, and then I compare it to Dave McGowan's 'Programmed to Kill: the Politics of Serial Murder'. I talk about the history of the concept, specifically the FBI's revisionism in pretending they invented the study of serial killers. Then I go into Ed Kemper (and to a lesser degree Herb Mullin) as depicted in the book and show, and the very interesting facts that get curiously left out of these popular histories. Full warning: it gets pretty weird, as we get into 'behavioral modification' experiments at Atascadero and Vacaville, and if Vacaville comes up, you know the Symbionese Liberation Army will as well.
