When nineteen-year-old Patty Hearst was kidnapped from her apartment in February 1974, everyone assumed the heiress had been abducted for the purposes of ransom. However, in the days that followed, Hearst's kidnappers, the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA), made themselves known when they sent a letter demanding the Hearst family provide food to every needy family in California. For nearly two months, the SLA held Patty Hearts captive, or so it seemed to the public. But when the group's demands were met and Hearst was given the opportunity to leave, the teenager shocked the world when, rather than flee her captors, she joined their ranks in support of their cause. Hearst's decision set in motion a chain of events that resulted in several acts of explosive violence and forever changed the way we think about victims of kidnapping. Yet in all the analysis of the case over the last fifty years, one question remains unanswered, and possibly unanswerable: Was Patty Hearst a willing accomplice to the SLA or was she a brainwashed victim trying to survive a traumatic ordeal?Thank you to the Amazing Dave White (of BRING ME THE AXE PODCAST) for research and writing assistance!ReferencesAssociated Press. 1974. Beverly Sutphin (Kathleen Turner) is the nicest lady you'd ever hope to meet. She has a nice dentist husband, Eugene (Sam Waterson) and two lovely children, Chip (Matthew Lillard) and Misty (Ricki Lake), is friendly to all and she even recycles! Don't go stealing her parking spot like neighbor, Dottie Hinkle (Mink Stole) or Bev will make obscene phone calls. Don't insult her son like the math teacher (John Badila) or she'll run you over. Don't break her daughter's heart like Carl (Lonnie Horsey) or she'll stab your liver out. You better rewind those video tapes or you'll be beaten with a leg of lamb like that freak Mrs. Jenson (Patsy Grady Adams). And definitely don't wear white shoes after labor day like Juror #8 (Patricia Hearst). Beverly goes on a rampage in Serial Mom, this week on Doom Generation.
VP Vance says courts “aren't allowed” to overrule Trump's executive orders or block policies Read more below: https://www.forbes.com/sites/alisondurkee/2025/02/09/jd-vance-suggests-judges-arent-allowed-to-control-trump-after-courts-block-his-policies/ LEGAL ANALYST/AUTHOR: John O'Connor, is author of Postgate: How the Washington Post Betrayed Deep Throat, Covered Up Watergate, and Began Today's Partisan Advocacy Journalism He served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Northern California representing the United States in both criminal and civil cases. Deep Throat's lawyer discovers the Washington Post betrayed his client—while covering up the real truth about the Watergate scandal. The conventional wisdom of Watergate is turned on its head by Postgate, revealing that the Post did not uncover Watergate as much as it covered it up. The Nixon Administration, itself involved in a coverup, was the victim of a journalistic smokescreen that prevented mitigation of its criminal guilt. As a result of the paper's successful misdirection, today's strikingly deceptive partisan journalism can be laid at the doorstep of the Washington Post. After Deep Throat's lawyer, author John O'Connor, discovered that the Post had betrayed his client while covering up the truth about Watergate, his indefatigable research resulted in Postgate, a profoundly shocking tale of journalistic deceit. In an era when numerous modern media outlets rail about the guilt of their political enemies for speaking untruths, Postgate proves that the media can often credibly be viewed as the party actually guilty of deception. Americans today mistrust the major media more than ever. Postgate will prove that this distrust is richly deserved. BOOK: BIO: John O'Connor is an experienced trial lawyer, practicing law in San Francisco since 1972. He has tried cases in state and federal court throughout the country. He served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Northern California from 1974-1979, representing the United States in both criminal and civil cases. Among his interesting assignments have been representation of the government during the OPEC oil embargo of the 1970s; writing Fifth Amendment and “state of mind” briefs for the prosecution in United States v. Patricia Hearst; representing the FDIC, FSLC and RTC during the savings and loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s; representing California Attorney General Dan Lungren in campaign-related litigation; defending

Cry-Baby is the pick of this week's supporter, Lucky LouLouGreen! Cry-Baby (1990), directed by John Waters, was a deliberate foray into mainstream filmmaking while retaining Waters' signature offbeat style. Set in 1950s Baltimore, the movie serves as a satirical homage to teen musicals like Grease and rebellious youth culture. Waters assembled a unique cast, headlined by Johnny Depp in his first major film role post-21 Jump Street, as he sought to break free from his teen heartthrob image. Alongside Depp, the ensemble included Ricki Lake, Traci Lords, and Patricia Hearst, with Waters blending Hollywood newcomers with eccentric cult personalities. Filmed on location in Maryland, the production leaned heavily on a retro aesthetic, featuring vibrant costumes, classic cars, and rockabilly-inspired musical numbers. Waters worked closely with choreographers and musicians to infuse the film with both authenticity and absurdity, creating a stylized yet tongue-in-cheek tribute to 1950s pop culture. Despite Waters' reputation as a cult filmmaker, Cry-Baby was produced with significant studio backing from Universal Pictures, granting it a larger budget than his previous works. This collaboration with a major studio presented challenges, as Waters had to balance his trademark subversive humor with the commercial expectations of a broader audience. The film's over-the-top humor and campy sensibilities divided critics upon release, but it gained a devoted following over time, particularly among fans of musical comedies and Waters' unconventional storytelling. While Cry-Baby didn't achieve box office success, it cemented Waters' ability to inject mainstream cinema with his rebellious flair and ultimately inspired a Tony-nominated Broadway adaptation in 2007, solidifying its status as a cult classic. Their romance sets off a rivalry between the rowdy, leather-clad "drapes" and the prim, uptight "squares", leading to a series of musical showdowns, quirky antics, and over-the-top drama. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

In this episode, we unravel the insidious tactics of love bombing and conditional affection, the manipulation and dependency that cults and abusive relationships foster, and the isolation and indoctrination techniques that rob individuals of their autonomy. We also delve into the intricacies of leaving such environments and the intense feelings of shame and guilt that often accompany this challenging process. We'll discuss gender dynamics in narcissistic behaviors, the rise of female cult leaders like Amy Carlson and Elizabeth Claire Prophet, and the complex realities faced by cult members. From high-profile cases like Charles Manson's manipulation tactics and Leslie Van Houten's eventual transformation, to the impact of modern social media in cult awareness, Rick offers invaluable insights into how cults recruit even the most intelligent individuals and celebrities. Plus, we explore the critical role of intervention and the journey towards recovery, touching on compelling stories like Elizabeth Smart's and Patricia Hearst's abductions and subsequent reprogramming. Whether you're curious about the psychological traps of cults, or looking for ways to protect yourself and others, this episode is a powerful guide to understanding and safeguarding your autonomy. The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 8th study session on Michael Meiers' Was Jonestown a CIA Medical Experiment. This infamous mass murder has countless parallels to our recent literary selections - Columbine, Michael Swango, and The Hart murder-suicide. The Rev. Jim Jones, a White man born in a Racially Restricted Region of Indiana, took a thousand people from California to Guyana, South America. On November 18th, 1978, Jones killed nearly all 1,000 of his mostly black followers and orchestrated the assassination of Congressman Leo Ryan. Some were shot, but most were poisoned with cyanide, just like "Double-0 Swango." For nearly half a century, this event has been conventionally understood as a bunch of brainwashed black loons following a White charlatan to their demise in the jungle. Meiers' work suggests something far more nefarious. Last week, we learned about the assassination of the first black superintendent of any major California jurisdiction, Dr. Marcus Foster. Shot with cyanide bullets in November of 1973 (5 years before the November 1978 Jonestown massacre), the Symboinese Liberation Army (SLA) claimed credit for the slaughter and proceeded to kidnap Patricia Hearst, White daughter of publishing titan Randolph Hearst. Meiers suggests that the SLA was a CIA creation and their harebrained kidnapping may have been an elaborate distraction to keep North Americans from paying more attention to the concurrent COINTELPRO and Watergate scandals involving state-sanctioned corruption. Meiers also suggests Rev. Jones was connected to the SLA and may have contracted them to eliminate Dr. Foster, who opposed Jones' unfettered access to Oakland's poor black children. #COINTELPRO #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#
Happy Birthday, dear Patty, haaaappy birthday to you! Who's Patty, you ask? Why, Patty Hearst, of course! Today not only happens to be Ms. Hearst's birthday, it's also the 50th anniversary of the year she was kidnapped by, and then apparently joined with, a far left domestic terrorist organization. How did that all go down? Guess you'll have to listen to find out...Rob teaches Ray and Daniel about Patty (sorry, Patricia) Hearst's relatively mundane upbringing as an heir to the Hearst journalism fortune; the rise of the Symbionese Liberation Army (most of whom got their start in drama school - yes and motherf*&^ers!); how her status as the granddaughter of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst marked her as a target for the SLA; her tramautic experiences at the hands of the SLA; how Patty's transformation into "Tania" and her seeming cooperation with the SLA shocked the world; the biggest shootout in American history; and the controversial question that continues to surround the aftermath of her kidnapping: did Patty really become a terrorist, or was it a case of Stockholm Syndrome gone horribly awry?If you like what we're doing, please support us on Patreon, or you can subscribe to our bonus content on Apple Podcasts. Patty Hearst, Part 2. After witnessing the death of your friends, what do you do next? And where do you go? How does tragedy and trauma shape and reshape Patty Hearst's life. And what does innocence, guilt, and justice look like when the crazy ride finally comes to an end? This episode covers everything after the house fire which tragically kills many of the members of the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) through present day. We discuss the intricacies of the numerous trials of Patricia Hearst, Bill Harris, and Emily Harris and then see where everyone ends up in the years following.
Today Lauren brings us the tale of the kidnapping of Patricia Hearst, granddaughter of newspaper tycoon and policitican William Randolph Hearst. It a truly twisty tale, starting with living with her hippy boyfriend, and then being taken from the apartment, stowed away, blindfolded. BUT, it doesn't stop there. There's ransom, brainwashing, an attempted bank heist and then the police make some arrests.... but who they arrest is quite interesting. Episode #750 Watergate the 50th Anniversary Pt.2 Richard welcomes a U.S. Attorney to discuss the Watergate scandal which began early in the morning of June 17, 1972, when several burglars were arrested in the office of the Democratic National Committee, located in the Watergate complex of buildings in Washington, D.C. This was no ordinary robbery: The prowlers were connected to President Richard Nixon's reelection campaign, and they had been caught wiretapping phones and stealing documents. The ensuing attempted cover-up of the break-in led to President Nixon's eventual resignation in August 1974. Guest: John O'Connor is an experienced trial lawyer, practicing law in San Francisco since 1972. He has tried cases in state and federal court throughout the country. He served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Northern California, representing the United States in both criminal and civil cases. Among his interesting assignments have been representation writing Fifth Amendment and "state of mind" briefs for the prosecution in United States v. Patricia Hearst; representing Coach Don Nelson in litigation with Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban; and representing W. Mark Felt regarding the revelation of his identity as Deep Throat.
