In what is quite possibly Leaving Eden Podcast's most requested episode ever, Sadie and Gavi discuss Jonestown, The People's Temple, and the massacre that occurred there in November of 1978. TW: In general we talk about a lot of potentially triggering topics on this show, including but not limited to suicide and mental health, racism, misogyny, PTSD and PTSD symptoms, child abuse, mental, physical, and sexual abuse, and spiritual abuse including guilt, shame, and fear. In most episodes we'll mention at least a few of these topics, but we try very hard to avoid graphic detail unless it's relevant to the story we're telling, and we do our best to give the audience a heads-up before going into detail on any of these topics. In this episode, of course we are going to be discussing many deaths by suicide, the majority of which were coerced or forced, and the death of many children, but we think that's obvious from the episode title and the topic we're discussing. We are also going to be talking about a lot of very twisted humiliation rituals, control and brainwashing and blackmail rituals, this goes a bit deeper than we were initially aware of. Of course we will give you a heads up before we drop any graphic details, but as usual we are going to err on the side of not glorifying abuse and letting listeners seek out the darker details if they want to. Hello listeners!! I got a new microphone but there is still some feedback and it amplified background noises. I will figure it out for future episodes so bare with me. Why did hundreds of people willingly follow a madman to their deaths and murder their children? This episode is the first in a three part series on the Jonestown Massacre as I try to examine why people would do that. What was it about him? How could they look past his abusive controlling behavior and follow him? How did he prevent them from leaving? Those are some of the questions I hope to answer. As for sources for this episode consist mostly of two books:The Road to Jonestown: Jim Jones and Peoples Temple By Jeff GuinnA Thousand Lives: The Untold Story of Hope, Deception, and Survival at Jonestown By Julia ScheeresSome information comes from documentaries but they discuss little about Jim Jones up to the move to California so I will include them in the other episodes source list.

On Thursday's Houston Matters: Many of us will travel over Thanksgiving and the holidays that follow. How might it impact the state of the pandemic? We talk it over with Dr. James McDeavitt from Baylor College of Medicine. Also this hour: On this date in 1978, 900 people died at The Peoples Temple in Jonestown, a settlement in the South American jungle of Guyana, in an act carried out by followers of cult leader Jim Jones. The shocking event had a Houston connection, as our Michael Hagerty learned in his 2018 conversation with writer Jeff Guinn, author of The Road to Jonestown: Jim Jones and The Peoples Temple. Then, there's been a lot of attention and hand-wringing lately over what public schools teach about sexuality and race. For example, books in Texas schools came under scrutiny recently because they cover some perceived uncomfortable subject matter. But aren't we regularly encouraged to get outside our comfort zones? We discuss the importance of sometimes being uncomfortable in our everyday lives. And we talk with Texas bee expert Jack Neff.

Welcome to part 1 of a 4 parter on The People’s Temple, it’s founder Jim Jones, and the supposedly idyllic town called Jonestown Jim Jones convinced his followers to follow him to in Guyana. As many of you know we’re located in Indiana, so there are some localish implications with this story that begin in Indiana, transferred to San Francisco to set up it’s home base, and finished in the Peoples Temple Agricultural Project, commonly referred to as Jonestown, all the way to South America, where the members of the People’s Temple, a religious organization that began with Jim Jones preaching about Jesus and social reform in 1955 and ended with the mass murder of 918 people in Jonestown on November 18, 1978, in the single largest mass casualty event involving US citizens at the time.

But again, IS there really such a thing?) Along the way we track the rise of Jim Jones in California from Midwestern Cult Leader new in town to a mover and shaker in California politics! (He was Rosalyn Carter's pen pal!)  We learn how the Peoples Temple got small town California to accept them (money) and how Jim Jones got big city politicians to embrace him.  (votes).  Then we see the slow spiral that leads Reverend Jones and his followers to their ends in a snake infested jungle compound by off brand fruit drink and cyanide.  (Never say we aren't a fun podcast for the kids!  Actually, ALWAYS say that!) Cult leader Jim Jones used a dangerous mix of lies, abuse, and manipulation to control the members of his People’s Temple. The hold he had over his cult was so severe he convinced the members to move into the middle of the jungles of Guyana, AKA Jonestown. But, as the events unraveled so too did Jones. Failing health and a drug addiction fueled his craziness and led to a US Congressman flying to Guyana to see things for himself. The ensuing events led to the tragic murder of the Congressman and much of his party, then culminated in in the deaths of over 900 people at Jonestown…over a 3rd of which were kids. Jones convinced his followers to drink Flavor-Aid laced with Cyanide. Some drank of their own volition, some were forced, while many (including children) were injected. How does a diverse church group who set out to build a paradise on Earth, a Utopian society free from racism and hatred, end up unleashing hell on Earth that culminated in one of the greatest crimes in our modern times? We dive in deep this week. Plus, Conspiracy has decided he’s going to be on Shark Tank, in an unrelated note he also decides he need to go to the aquarium, and finally Pecker, Kevin, and Chris Marcum all take a trip back to the lower 4th to finish this crazy topic. All of that and more on the podcast that has never met Jim Jones, but we know a guy who knows Jim Belushi - Hysteria 51.Special thanks to this week’s research sources:Research Assistant – Raymond Walden IVBooksRaven: The Untold Story of the Rev. This week on Sinica, Kaiser and Jeremy chat with Christina Larson, a science and technology reporter for the Associated Press, about a major story that her team broke: the Chinese scientist Hè Jiànkuí 贺建奎 announcement that he had edited the genes of embryos conceived in vitro, and that twin girls had been born, making them — if his claims are true — the world’s first gene-edited babies. We look at the overwhelmingly critical response to this announcement in the Chinese scientific community, among ordinary people, and among officials, as well as what this may mean for the ethical landscape in Chinese science. Please note that this show was taped in December 2018, and since then, He Jiankui has resurfaced, claiming that he’s doing just fine — so far. 15:20: The process by which He Jiankui conducted his research raised concerns throughout scientific circles worldwide. Christina was among a team of Associated Press reporters that spoke with the supposed founder of the hospital HarMoniCare, who allowed He to circumvent submitting his research to an ethical review board. “He told us, quite proudly, that he wasn’t a doctor or scientist, but a hospital property developer.” 24:34: The dodgy science behind a misguided experiment. Christina lists the litany of failures in He’s methodology, principal among them: the genes that were intended to be edited. “But there’s also evidence from the information Hè presented…that only half of the intended genes were edited in one of the two twins.” 31:10: When it comes to medicine, particularly ethically questionable experiments like the one He conducted last year, the stakes are higher. "So, ideally, scientists have peer review and ethical review boards, and technology companies have trade secrets and product launches in beta, because presumably the stakes are lower if it's a social media app. But things get messier in medicine when it's a life-or-death technology. You can't release something like that in beta." Recommendations: Jeremy: The Selfish Gene, by Richard Dawkins, a gene-centered story of evolution. Christina: She Has Her Mother's Laugh: The Powers, Perversions, and Potential of Heredity, by Carl Zimmer, a book on genetic inheritance; also, a story by Christina’s colleagues at the Associated Press on tracing products made in Uyghur internment camps: US sportswear traced to factory in China’s internment camps. Kaiser: The Road to Jonestown: Jim Jones and Peoples Temple, by Jeff Guinn, a dispassionate story of the horrifically tragic story of Jim Jones and the Jonestown Massacre.
