To the best of my knowledge, Kris Schultz is the second“merch slinger” I've met that went on to pursue a lyrical life as a troubadour in her own right.  My first experience was with Texas songwriter Kayla Ray as she first visited KC slinging merch for Jason Eady.  I love Kris' trajectory…. check this out.  Growing up in Topeka, Kansas, Kris was obsessed at an early age with the country songs of heartbreak and loss on the jukebox at a bar she visited regularly with her parents.  At an early age, she showed promise in several sports, especially the field part of track and field eventually accepted a scholarship to throw Javelin at Kansas State University, where she majored in Radio/Television Journalism.  While competing in the Texas Relays during her college career, she fell in love with Austin, TX.  And soon moved there with only a box of books & CDs, a small stereo, and a bag of clothes.  She walked into the city-ran Austin Music Network TV channel, asked for an internship, and soon was spending her days proof-checking videos of local music and taking in every note. But she still hadn't thought of playing music herself. After years assisting musicians as merch slinger, roadmanager and van driver, but never playing or singing herself, Kris eventually  acquired a guitar and began writing songs. She released her full-length album, Standard Issue Heart, inOctober 2021, has played such legendary venues as The Saxon Pub and Cactus Café in Texas, toured in the Midwest, Southwest and Southeastern US, has been featured in the live performance series “Songs In Places.”  Kris recently found herself in the Heartland and we connected to make an appearance on the Tasty Brew Music Radio Show happen.   Enjoy this performance and conversation with Austin transplant Kris Schultz.  Tasty Brew Music Radio Show "Showcasing the best of Americana/Roots Music in andfrom the Heartland!”Fridays 10 AM to Noon CST on 90.1FM KKFI Kansas CityCommunity Radio !!Since 2010, spinning a “tasty brew” of Americana/Bluegrass/Country/Roots Music… empowering the art of the song! Tim McDonnell of Semafor discusses the shifting dynamics of climate and energy policy in both the US and the UK. As political leaders struggle to balance energy security, climate action, and public perception, they explore the "green hush" happening in campaign messaging—why politicians are avoiding direct references to climate change and how this could impact both policy and public engagement. The Green Hushing Phenomenon:"Green hushing" has emerged as a tactic in political campaigns, with politicians framing climate policy in terms of jobs, economic growth, and energy independence rather than climate impacts. Tim discusses how this strategic messaging shift might resonate with voters, particularly those in swing states like Pennsylvania. The UK's Conservative Party and Climate Policy:Turning to the UK, they explore how political leaders such as Robert Jenrick are echoing skeptical stances on net zero commitments, driven in part by a broader conservative narrative of climate action as an economic burden. Richard and Tim highlight the similarities between messaging in the UK and the US, examining how climate denial has evolved into opposition to climate costs.Climate Messaging in Campaign Ads:The duo analyzes recent campaign ads from environmental coalitions like the League of Conservation Voters and Environmental Defense Fund, which conspicuously avoid mentioning climate change, instead focusing on cost-of-living issues and corporate accountability. What does this say about the perceived salience of climate as a campaign issue?Implications of the "Dog That Didn't Bark":Richard and Tim reflect on the broader implications of the absence of climate discourse in the political spotlight, particularly in light of recent natural disasters in the Southeastern United States. They question how this "silence" may impact public awareness, climate activism, and ultimately, policy effectiveness.Transatlantic Messaging Echoes:The conversation also touches on the global nature of climate messaging, with the same rhetoric appearing across the US, UK, and even other parts of Europe. They discuss the role of think tanks and political alliances in propagating these talking points.Key Moments:[00:03:00] - Introduction: Recap of the DNC and the notable absence of direct climate messaging.[00:10:20] - Tim McDonnell on the “green hushing” approach in Kamala Harris' campaign.[00:19:50] - The UK's Conservative Party and skepticism around net zero: Comparing US and UK narratives.[00:28:30] - Richard shares insights on climate campaign ads and their strategic avoidance of climate language.[00:37:45] - Recent climate disasters in the Southeastern US and the “silent” climate policy response.[00:45:15] - Outro reflections: The need for direct climate discourse in politics.Subscribe:If you found value in this conversation, subscribe at wickedproblems.earth for more deep dives into the intersections of climate, tech, and politics. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Mark R Anderson, author of the book Sage Among the Pines. Mark, a Fulton Books author, retired after thirty-five years of distinguished service in the Department of Defense and ten years, concurrently, as an officer in the United States Navy Reserve. He completed his most recent book, Sage Among the Pines. A graduate of the University of Maryland and the National Intelligence University, Mark's upbringing in a military family instilled a love for travel and exploration, shaping his diverse perspectives and providing rich material for his creative works. Currently, the author resides in Pinehurst, North Carolina, with his wife and youngest daughter. In his spare time, Mark is an avid golfer at Pinehurst Country Club and enjoys filming book videos, alongside indulging in freshwater bass fishing across the Southeastern US. In my book review, I stated that I was excited to read this book before it came out on the shelves. Tom and Cynthia, along with their daughter, Lexi, have a great life. Until. Tom makes a mistake. Cynthia can't forgive him. No one tells Lexi what is going on. And then, without warning, Tom dies in a military training exercise. As Cynthia spirals into depression, her daughter spirals into adolescent rage. Only a sage among the pines, in the form of a grandfather-grandmother duo, can save them. This is a healing journey - healing from loss and betrayal - as well as a forgiveness journey. It shows how complicated life can become, even when people truly love one another. I enjoyed Mark's book because his characters are real. If you enjoy character-driven fiction, then this one is for you. On today's special bonus episode, recorded live from the Road to Majority Conference in Washington, D.C., put on by the Faith and Freedom Coalition, I was able to sit down with Georgia State Senator Shawn Still. While new to public office, Shawn became instantly embroiled in the Big Fani Willis RICO case surrounding Donald Trump, having been also charged in that case. We spend the opening of the interview discussing how the indictment occurred and what he has been doing since to fight it. While a few people took plea deals to avoid the cost, Shawn is focused on clearing his name and in showing everyone that he is yet another victim of lawfare. Shawn is the owner and president of Olympic Pool Plastering & Shotcrete, the largest swimming pool subcontractor in the Southeastern US. He employs over 100 Georgians in his Gwinnett-based company. During his first legislative session, he sponsored or co-sponsored 75 of the 211 Senate bills signed into law. Shawn hit the ground running for the citizens of Georgia and the 48th district. His consistent voting record has drawn the attention of multiple conservative and business-oriented organizations who trust him to fight for good policy under the Gold Dome. He was named the 2023 freshman legislator of the year by the Georgia Chamber. Take a moment to rate and review the show and then share the episode on social media. We pay tribute to another of the great labels of the O3L era...this time shining the spotlight on the magnificent DB Recs, the Atlanta-based label founded by Danny Beard, and run from 1978 - 1997 out of his still thriving record store Wax'n'Facts. Through Danny's ingenuity, support, and incredible ear for talent, it's safe to say that the alternative music scene in the Southeastern US would not be the same without him. DB's initial release was catalogue number DB-52, 'Rock Lobster' / '52 Girls', the first single by none other than The B-52's. From there, DB gave a voice to a wide range of artists in Atlanta, Athens, and beyond, including Pylon, Love Tractor, Oh-OK, Guadalcanal Diary, The Swimming Pool Q's, Fetchin Bones, Zeitgeist/The Reivers, The Jody Grind, The Coolies, Chris Stamey, and others. This week, we each offer up our Top 5 DB Recs songs with special guests Current Rage - John Moore (rhythm guitar), Paul Lenz (drums), and Bryan Lilje (bass). In absentia is lead guitarist and vocalist Olivia Bewley. You may remember the remarkable story of Current Rage from Episode 140: The band formed in 1979 by professional skateboarders Chris Bewley (brother of Pylon's Randy) and John Moore. By the beginning of 1981, they were headlining shows in the southeast with their brash, energetic, catchy post-punk tunes. They released the indie EP Seven Songs in 1982, which became a highly coveted collector's item among fans of DIY indie rock. After Current Rage ceased to be, each of the members followed different paths, with Chris Bewley succumbing to a heart attack in 2018 at the age of 57. Coinciding with the expanded 40th anniversary reissue of Seven Songs in 2022 on Propeller Sound Recordings, Current Rage is now back and experiencing a resurgence...with a twist. Chris's daughter Olivia plays lead guitar and sings in the current iteration of the band. While she never had much of a relationship with her father, through his music, his former band, and even some of his equipment, she is able to connect with Chris in powerful, unexpected ways. During this episode, we catch up with the band and (despite not being DB Recs artists themselves) discuss the indelible impact of Danny Beard and the DB roster on them. Deep gratitude to Current Rage's manager, Robin Hall Bewley Frankland, for organizing this return visit to O3L! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Have you heard of the opportunity zones? These are new community development program that was established by Congress through the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. The reason why the government is creating these opportunity zones is to encourage long-term investments, specifically in low-income urban and rural areas throughout the country, and bolster the economy. Now, as a real estate entrepreneur, how will this benefit you? In this last episode of our three-part series with Dave Codrea of Atlanta-based real estate investment firm Greenleaf, he discusses what an opportunity zone is, its risks and benefits, and the importance of proper underwriting when you have a deal in the opportunity zone. He also explains why it's important to look at it so that it makes sense from a deal standpoint, not just from a tax standpoint. Tune in now and find out if it's time for you to look at the opportunity zone you can invest in! The world is facing a great financial strain - what does this mean for the investment in the energy transition? On this episode of the Energy Gang, host Ed Crooks is joined by Nneka Kibuule from Aligned Climate Capital, and Sam Scroggins from Lazard. The gang starts the discussion by looking at the state of the economy. There is a surge of inflation being felt around the world. In the US, the current rate of consumer inflation is at 8.2%. As a direct result, 30-year mortgage interest rates are at their highest levels in two decades. In Europe, they brace for a rise in energy costs as winter looms near. We explore what this means for investment in low carbon energy and the cost of renewables. Back in August, the Biden Administration signed into law the Inflation Reduction Act, with tax credits that they hope will help stimulate more investment into wind, solar, storage, hydrogen and nuclear power. The bill is projected to have a huge positive impact over the next ten years, but is it already changing decisions on investments being made now? And what happens when the political landscape changes?Next, we shift our focus from the discussion of climate mitigation — cutting greenhouse gas emissions — and turn it towards climate adaptation and resilience. Recent events like the category 4 hurricane that destroyed parts of the Southeastern US and parts of Cuba, have highlighted the need for resiliency in local communities. Governments are committing money to strengthening the resilience of communities and infrastructures, but is there more the private sector can do to assist in climate adaptation? Can they generate a return from these hard-to-monetize spaces?Listen in as the gang takes a deep dive into where investors are putting their money.
