Samuel Bateman is incarcerated in a federal facility serving a fifty-year sentence. He maintains regular telephone contact with followers. A meaningful number of the women and girls removed from his FLDS offshoot — including individuals Christine Marie personally helped extract — have reportedly returned to his sphere of influence. Adult wives continue to identify him as their prophet. The conviction and sentence have not disrupted his operational control over the belief system he constructed. The pattern has direct precedent. Warren Jeffs has maintained influence over FLDS members from a Texas prison cell for over a decade. Bateman is replicating the same dynamic with the same psychological infrastructure — what Christine Marie characterizes as an "IV of indoctrination" delivered through regular telephone contact.Christine Marie addresses what she has learned about the content of Bateman's prison communications with followers. She identifies the division between women who have permanently separated from the group and those who have returned — and the social consequences for those who left, including potential reclassification as fallen or as enemies of the faith. She confronts the clinical and moral question she returns to repeatedly: whether some adults who have been conditioned within high-control religious environments from birth can be reached through intervention, or whether some individuals are functionally unable to construct identity outside coercive structures.Short Creek remains structurally intact. The theology, the isolation mechanisms, and the obedience hierarchy that produced both Jeffs and Bateman continue to operate. Robin Dreeke and Shavaun Scott examine why the FLDS persists when comparable organizations — NXIVM, Peoples Temple — collapsed following their leaders' removal. They address Faith Bistline's circumstances — having lost her family to Bateman and now raising the children affected by his conduct. They evaluate what intervention methods demonstrate efficacy with children in high-control religious environments and the competing harms of removal versus continued exposure. Both experts address directly whether the conditions at Short Creek are likely to produce another leader operating on the same model — or whether the community possesses the capacity to interrupt the cycle.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
Christine Marie risked everything to get them out. Some of them walked right back in. Samuel Bateman is serving fifty years in federal prison. He still calls. The women still answer. Some of his adult wives still call him their prophet. Some of the girls Christine helped pull out of his house have returned to his sphere. The conviction changed nothing about his hold on them. The sentence changed nothing. One phone call at a time, the certainty keeps flowing — what Christine describes as an IV of indoctrination right into their veins. The same pattern held with Warren Jeffs twenty years ago. He ran the FLDS from a prison cell. Now Bateman is doing the same thing with a different phone and the same psychological infrastructure underneath it.Christine addresses what she actually knows about what Bateman feeds his followers from inside. The split between the women who got out permanently and the ones who returned — and whether the ones who left are now treated as traitors, as fallen, as enemies of the faith. Why some women can walk out of a coercive group and build a real life the way Christine did, and others can't. The question she keeps coming back to — whether some adults can be reached at all, or whether some people only feel at home inside something broken. And what real change at the federal and state level would even look like.Short Creek is still standing. Same theology. Same isolation. Same obedience structure. Every co-defendant in the Bateman case was convicted. Robin Dreeke and Shavaun Scott examine why the FLDS survives when NXIVM and Peoples Temple collapsed after their leaders fell. They talk about Faith Bistline — who lost her entire family to Bateman and is raising the children they helped destroy. What actually works to help children still inside high-control religious groups. And the question both experts answer point-blank: is Short Creek going to break the cycle, or is the machine just waiting for its next operator?Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? The legal case is closed. Samuel Bateman is serving fifty years. Every co-defendant was convicted. And Short Creek is still standing — same theology, same isolation, same obedience structure that produced both Warren Jeffs and Bateman. The machine didn't break. It just lost its current operator.Robin Dreeke and Shavaun Scott examine why the FLDS survives when other cults collapsed after their leaders fell. NXIVM dissolved. Peoples Temple ended in mass death. The FLDS keeps regenerating. The theology provides the framework. The isolation provides the barrier. The obedience structure provides the pipeline. And the community has now demonstrated twice that when a leader is removed, the conditions that created him remain intact. They talk about Faith Bistline — who lost her entire family to Bateman and is now raising the children they helped destroy. About what actually works to help children still inside high-control religious groups when removing them causes devastating psychological consequences and leaving them in produces worse ones. About whether Jeffs can maintain control of the FLDS indefinitely from a prison cell — and whether Bateman is doing the same thing right now.Because Bateman is still calling. Every day. From federal prison. The women still answer. Some of his adult wives still call him their prophet. Some of the girls Christine Marie helped rescue have returned to his sphere. The sentence didn't end his control. The conviction didn't end his control. Christine describes the phone calls as an IV of indoctrination — certainty flowing one conversation at a time into people whose entire identity was built inside a system designed to make leaving feel like dying.Christine addresses the split between the women who got out and the women who went back. Whether the ones who left are now treated as enemies of the faith. The ugly question she can't stop asking: whether some adults can be reached at all. And what real systemic change would look like — or whether this is just the cost of a country that lets people believe whatever they want, even when what they believe is destroying children.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Luis and Angelo discuss the terrifying true story of Peoples Temple and the rise of Jim Jones – the charismatic preacher who built one of the most infamous cults in modern history. What began as a movement centered around racial equality, community and activism slowly turned into a nightmare built on paranoia, manipulation and total emotional control, ending with the mass suicide of over 900 people. The guys break down Jones' rise from a small Indiana preacher obsessed with religion and death to a political powerhouse with thousands of loyal followers and connections to some of the most powerful figures in California. They explore how Jones used staged healings and loyalty tests to build godlike authority, and how life inside Jonestown became a closed world shaped by fear, exhaustion, and constant psychological pressure. They also examine the final days leading up to Congressman Leo Ryan's visit to Jonestown in Guyana, the deadly airstrip ambush that resulted in his murder, and the chilling final pavilion meeting that ended in the deaths of nearly the entire congregation. Because the scariest thing about Jonestown isn't just how it ended – it's how many people truly believed they were building a better world before everything collapsed.

The 1970s saw a surge in the prominence of religious cults with groups like the Manson Family, Peoples Temple, and Heaven's Gate making headlines around the world. But smaller cults began popping up in rural communities all over the country, including right here in Michigan. In this episodes, we'll talk about two such cults- the House of Judah and the Theocratic Commune Natural Health Service- who committed unspeakable acts against their most vulnerable members, their own children. Cases: House of Judah, Theocratic Commune Natural Health ServiceAudio production by Bill Bertschinger.
Matt shares his thoughts on season 3: Heaven on Earth. He speaks of how he chose the story of Peoples Temple and Jonestown, the possible pitfalls of doing an extended series on such a dark story, his original and eventual agendas in the creative process, and what he hopes people can take away from hearing it.Theme Music: “Stick to the Plan,” written by Adrian Dominic Walther and performed by Dr. DelightAd Music:“Outside the Lines,” written by Aaron Sprinkle and performed by Lone CanyonBumper Music:“Get on Down,” written by Matthew Wigton and performed by Nu Alkemi$t

Most of us think we'd never fall for a cult. We imagine the followers of Jim Jones as naïve, brainwashed, or broken people who “drank the Kool-Aid.” But what if that's not the truth at all?In this eye-opening episode, host Gabe Howard speaks with the award-winning author of “Death in the Jungle: Murder, Betrayal, and the Lost Dream of Jonestown,” Candace Fleming, about the real story behind Jonestown, aka the Peoples Temple, and the mass suicide that shocked the world. Fleming reveals how ordinary, intelligent, and socially conscious people were slowly drawn into Jim Jones's orbit — not because they wanted to die, but because they wanted to belong, to matter, and to change the world. Listener takeaways: Discover nine warning signs of a destructive or cult-like group. Learn why intelligent, well-intentioned people joined Jim Jones' cult. Explore how to recognize and protect yourself from coercive influences. Listen in as they explore how groupthink, manipulation, and gradual isolation can transform a movement with noble intentions into something deeply destructive. Together, they dismantle the myths surrounding cults and reveal the psychological, emotional, and social dynamics that allow them to take hold. Ultimately, their conversation challenges us to confront an unsettling question: Could it happen to any of us? “They had started people with Peoples Temple, some of them back in the ‘50s when it was still in Indianapolis and truly was an integrated church, unheard of in the '50s. They followed Jones to California and then on to Guyana. And all of that was because of their own community. So people came for many reasons, but none of them because they were, as we would like to say, cultists, brainwashed, crazy.” ~Candace Fleming Our host, Candace Fleming, is the prolific and versatile award-winning author of many books for children and young adults. School Library Journal praised her most recent title, Murder Among Friends, which received four starred reviews, as a "chilling page-turner." Her previous book The Rise and Fall of Charles Lindbergh received six starred reviews, was a Kirkus, PW, Booklist, and SLJ Best Book of the Year, and was hailed by the Wall Street Journal as a “fascinating chronicle.” Candace's The Family Romanov also received six starred reviews, won the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for Nonfiction and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and was recognized as a Sibert Nonfiction Honor Book. Read my deep-dive article on the website: https://weirddarkness.com/Jonestown44MinutesJim Jones started the Peoples Temple preaching racial equality and winning civil rights awards, but by 1978 his Jonestown compound had become an isolated nightmare of beatings, forced labor, and "suicide rehearsals" where followers practiced drinking poison. On November 18th, when a congressman's investigation threatened to expose the truth, Jones ordered his followers to feed cyanide-laced punch to over 300 children first—then recorded audio as 900 people died in the largest loss of American civilian life before 9/11.Join the DARKNESS SYNDICATE for the ad-free version: https://weirddarkness.com/syndicateTake the WEIRD DARKNESS LISTENER SURVEY and help mold the future of the podcast: https://weirddarkness.com/surveyIN THIS EPISODE: We'll look not only at the horrible events of the Jonestown massacre itself, but what life was like for those in The Peoples Temple cult before the mass suicide took place. February 26, 1980. Berkeley, California. 51-year old Al Mills, his 40-year old wife, Jeannie, and Jeannie's 16-year old daughter, Daphene, are all shot to death, execution-style, in their home. Jeannie's 17-year old son, Eddie, is left unharmed inside his bedroom, but claims he did not hear the murders take place. Years earlier, the Mills family had defected from the Reverend Jim Jones' infamous cult, the Peoples Temple, and become outspoken advocates against them. Following the Jonestown Massacre, rumours circulated that surviving members of the cult were going to target the family as revenge. However, investigators suspect that Eddie was the actual perpetrator and make an unsuccessful attempt to charge him with the crime 25 years later. Did Eddie Mills murder his own family, or were they victims of an assassination by outside intruders? This week's episode of “The Path Went Chilly” explores an unsolved triple homicide and its potential connection to the Jonestown saga.Additional Reading:Support the show: Patreon.com/julesandashleyPatreon.com/thetrailwentcoldhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeannie_Millshttps://people.com/archive/the-mills-family-murders-could-it-be-jim-jones-last-revenge-vol-13-no-11/https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/BERKELEY-Man-jailed-in-family-slayings-from-25-2557794.phphttps://www.eastbaytimes.com/2005/12/09/son-wont-be-charged-in-1980-slayings/https://archives.sfweekly.com/thesnitch/2015/11/12/yesterdays-crimes-peoples-temple-hit-squads-and-jonestowns-last-victimshttps://www.sfweekly.com/news/yesterdays-crimes-jonestown-was-just-the-beginning-for-one-peoples-temple-family/https://www.psychologytoday.com/ca/articles/199203/the-truth-about-jonestown

Married to a Cult Leader The Mysterious Death of Her Son and Isabella Young's Journey from California to Hawaii. Isabella Young's story reads like a modern-day epic, equal parts heartbreak, healing, and spiritual transformation. Once married to a cult leader in Southern California and later a grieving mother after the mysterious death of her son, Isabella has emerged from unimaginable darkness to become a beacon of hope, wisdom, and resilience. Now living in Hawaii, she shares her harrowing journey through her books, art, and online presence, reaching audiences via the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast interview, available for free on their website, on Facebook, Instagram, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and more. “I didn't want to die, but I didn't know how to live,” she says. “That's when I began the deepest journey of my life.” The episode is also promoted across their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other social media platforms. A Sudden Loss and the Start of a Spiritual Odyssey Isabella's life took a tragic turn in 1994 when she was widowed while pregnant, left to raise a three-year-old son alone. The grief of losing her husband was only the beginning. Driven by a desperate need for healing and understanding, she set off on a quest that spanned three continents, embracing everything from shamanic journeys and vision quests to living in ashrams, and retreats. Look for supporting stories about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin . But the path she hoped would heal her led instead to deeper suffering. She became entangled in what she now identifies as a "messianic cult" in Southern California, a group with disturbing similarities to the infamous spiritual movements that once flourished in the Golden State. Married to a Cult Leader The Mysterious Death of Her Son and Isabella Young's Journey from California to Hawaii. Available for free on their website and streaming on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other podcast platforms. Cults and California: A Dangerous Combination From "Heaven's Gate" and the "Manson Family" to the "Peoples Temple" and more, Southern California has long been a magnet for unconventional spiritual movements, some with devastating outcomes. These groups often center around a charismatic leader, promise enlightenment, and prey on people during vulnerable moments, much like Isabella's own experience. “We came looking for healing,” Isabella recalls. “Instead, we became trapped.” The cult's leader, Isabella's husband at the time, exercised complete psychological control. She spent eight years in submission, surrendering her identity to the teachings of a man she now claims was directly responsible for her son's "murder", staged as a suicide. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast episode is available for free on their website , Apple Podcasts , Spotify and most major podcast platforms. The Mysterious Death of Her Son Isabella's teenage son died under suspicious circumstances that were quickly labeled a suicide. But to Isabella, the truth is much darker. Married to a Cult Leader The Mysterious Death of Her Son and Isabella Young's Journey from California to Hawaii. “It wasn't suicide,” she insists. “It was murder. And it was the final act that set me free.” The grief shattered her illusions. That moment, the deepest wound of her life, became the catalyst for escape. She fled the cult, fleeing California with nothing but a mother's broken heart and a soul desperate for truth. You can listen to his stories and interview on our website for free in addition to platforms like Apple Podcasts and Spotify, and other major podcast platforms. From Trauma to Transformation in Hawaii Now residing in Hawaii, Isabella has spent the last several years rebuilding her life, and reclaiming her power. She shares her journey and healing modalities through her website, and through her writing, including her most recent book, New Human of New Earth: Medicine for the Freedom and Future of Humanity. In her book, Isabella explores ancient, indigenous wisdom and spiritual tools that she believes hold the key to personal and collective transformation in this era of chaos and awakening. Married to a Cult Leader The Mysterious Death of Her Son and Isabella Young's Journey from California to Hawaii. “The world is changing fast,” she writes. “We need ancient wisdom now more than ever, for our health, our freedom, and our future.” The full podcast episode is streaming now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and across Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Her message is not just spiritual, but deeply practical. She speaks to people facing trauma, confusion, and isolation in a rapidly evolving world, offering tools for sovereignty, truth, and divine embodiment. A Voice for the Voiceless Through social media, her podcast appearance on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast available on their website, also on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and others. Isabella is now a voice for those who've been silenced, especially former cult members and survivors of religious trauma. Her advocacy also touches on how governments and societies label spiritual movements, often with vague or politically motivated definitions. In fact, across countries like France, Germany, and Russia the term “cult” or “sect” has been used in ways that stigmatize non-traditional faiths, even when they don't cause harm. But Isabella makes clear: when a movement exerts psychological control, separates families, or enables violence, it is no longer benign. Married to a Cult Leader The Mysterious Death of Her Son and Isabella Young's Journey from California to Hawaii. Follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast across Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Isabella's Message Today As the world continues to shift, Isabella's journey serves as both a warning and a light. From the tragedy of being married to a cult leader to surviving the "murder" death of her son, she has emerged stronger, wiser, and more determined than ever to guide others toward awakening and autonomy. “The Great Awakening is real,” she says. “And each of us must take responsibility for our own healing, our own power, and our own truth.” If her message resonates with you, follow Isabella Young. Her books are available now and her story is being featured in a powerful podcast series streaming for free on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast webnsite, also on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other major platforms. In a world where the line between spiritual freedom and manipulation is often blurred, Isabella Young's journey is a rare testimony of courage, clarity, and rising from the ashes. Her story is more than a tale of survival, it's a blueprint for transformation. You can help contribute money to make the Gunrunner Movie . The film that Hollywood won't touch. On this episode of Wife of Crime I am telling Russ all about the diabolical cult leader Reverend Jim Jones and his church The Peoples Temple. Most people have heard the expression "Don't drink the kool aid..." but not everyone knows where this warning actually stemmed from. Jim Jones started his church with a mission to help Black Americans at a time when racial tensions were at an all time high. He preached a socialist message and in the early years did many good things for the poor and homeless as well. But as time passed something sinister was growing inside of him. The power he held went unchecked and that power became a hell of a drug... In Part 1 we discuss Jim's childhood and the early years of his church. You may find yourself asking... can someone who does evil things also have good in them?? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In Part 2 of the case of Jim Jones and The Peoples Temple the story continues with Jones telling his followers that it's time to head to South America to build a socialist utopia where they can live together in harmony. Reverend Jim Jones has already began to descend into madness but, a group of a little over one thousand loyal church members are ALL IN and have decided to follow him. Little do they know that this new beginning is really just the beginning of their tragic end. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Racist Suspect Joel Whitney. Classified as a White Man, Whitney is a Brooklyn, NY writer whose work has been featured in The New York Times, The Daily Beast, The Baffler, The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, and Boston Review to name a few. He's "a former features editor at Al Jazeera America and a founder and former editor-in-chief at Guernica." Gus originally hoped to speak with Whitney about his 2016 publication, Finks: How the CIA Tricked the World's Best Writers. I'm not quite sure what my original motivation was for exploring this text - could have been Rev. Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple or Soundtrack to a Coup d'État. Anyway, by the time we got our calendars synchronized, Mr. Whitney had written another book, Flights: Radicals on the Run. Most of the featured subjects who had to flee oppression are Victims of White Supremacy like: Minister Malcolm X, Paul Robeson, Dr. Angela Davis, and Leonard Peltier - who recently benefited from a commuted sentence from departing President Biden. During the broadcast, Mr. Whitney repeated the tacky refrain that White people are also "held back" by Racism. He could only list two trifling ways that the System of White Supremacy holds him down. Whitney also engaged in another suspicious and common practice amongst Racist Suspects: Citing the work of Ibram X. Kendi, a Victim of White Supremacy, to confuse non-white people about what it means to be classified as White. #LorraineHansberry #FarceOnWashington #TheCOWS16Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#
In this episode we highlight the pressures and motivations that led Jim Jones to migrate his flock to the middle of the jungle in a South American country in a location so remote - escape was almost impossible. Until Leo Ryan, a U.S. Congressman, touches down in jungle on a congressional investigation into the communist settlement known as Jonestown. After offering asylum to Jim Jones' brainwashed, religious hostages; Leo Ryan and his party of reporters and government employees are ambushed at the airstrip which they flew in on and Leo Ryan is murdered. What happens next is horrific and everyone knows about the Jonestown Kool-Aid cocktail.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Jim Jones & The Peoples Temple Part TwoSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Jim Jones was an American cult leader and mass murderer who founded and led the Peoples Temple between 1955 and 1978. In what Jones termed "revolutionary suicide", Jones and the members of his inner circle planned and orchestrated a mass murder-suicide in his remote jungle commune at Jonestown, Guyana, on November 18, 1978.As a child Jim Jones was entranced with two things - Pentecostal preachers and Communism. Reflecting back on his participation in the Communist Party, Jones said that he asked himself, "How can I demonstrate my Marxism? The thought was, infiltrate the church."AND SO HE DID.He began his religious career in 1952, Jones was hired as student pastor to the children at the Sommerset Southside Methodist Church, where he launched a project to create a playground that would be open to children of all races. Jones continued to visit and speak at Pentecostal churches while serving as Methodist student pastor. He felt called to the pomp and circumstance of the Pentecostal movement. There was something about the attention that he just could not get enough of... that would lead him to start his own Church, The Peoples Temple. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Matthew D. Taylor. A White Man and California native, Taylor “is a religious studies scholar and expert in independent charismatic Christianity and Christian nationalism. He is the creator, writer, and narrator of the Charismatic Revival Fury audio-documentary series on the Straight White American Jesus.” Gus T. heard about Taylor's 2024 publication, The Violent Take It By Force: The Christian Movement That Is Threatening Our Democracy,” during the 2024 US presidential election campaign. Reports once again predicted that White evangelicals would be a solid, White rock of support for Trump's third try at the White House. Taylor's work explores how the White evangelical bloc became such staunch, violent allies for our current, less than pious president. He highlights how many of the now-pardoned White Terrorists who stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021 believed they were soldiers in the army of White God who were battling against “dark,” satanic forces opposed to Trump's second term. Gus is amazed The Peoples Temple's Jim Jones was not mentioned in this book, as he's is sterling illustration of the dangers of White evangelicals who deceptively use religious rituals to support the violence of the System of White Supremacy. The details about White female evangelical powerhouse and Suspected Racist Paula White again illustrate that most people classified as black do not understand what it means to be classified as White nor do we suspect White people of being Racist. #WhiteGeneticAnnihilation #ManifestDestiny #TheCOWS16Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#
The Context of White Supremacy makes time on the federally recognized holiday for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to study the work of Dr. Frances Cress Welsing. During Gus's Counter-Racist California Sojourn, he located a number of audio recordings of Dr. Welsing debating Dr. William Shockley as well as her giving lectures to groups of black people. One such recording is of a 1982 presentation the Grandcestor gave in Compton, California. She spoke at Compton Community College in April of '82, which is just over three years removed from the Jonestown massacre - which involved a large number of black Californians. Dr. Welsing makes time to mention the Peoples Temple in fact. She also discusses the sacrifices made and lessons that must be learned from the life and murder of Dr. King. Importantly, Dr. Welsing emphasizes that non-white people are not serious about Replacing White Supremacy With Justice - which is mostly still true in 2025. #WhiteGeneticAnnihilation #StraightOuttaCompton #TheCOWS16Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#
Cult leader Jim Jones promised the congregation of the Peoples Temple 'Heaven on Earth' in the form of the Jonestown commune in Guyana. However, the cult would come to a deadly end on November 18th, 1978, with the forced suicide of over 900 men, women, and children. Retired San Francisco Police Captain Yulanda Williams was only 12 years old when her family joined The Peoples Temple. She shares how she was able to escape Jonestown before the infamous massacre, and how her survival shaped the rest of her life.
