This week we travel to March 2003 when Dominick Dunne has a very hot retort to the shots across the bow that Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has taken against him in a very lengthy essay in January 2003. Our man Nick is holding nothing back in his reply, always searching for justice for Martha Moxley. Find sources at more at this episode's show page at doneanddunne.com. This week, we conclude Dominick Dunne's role in the investigation of the murder of Martha Moxley in Greenwich, CT. in 1975. With the assistance of Mark Fuhrman and an 18 month grand jury investigation, an indictment was handed down to Michael Skakel in early 2000. This episode leads us through the summer of 2000 with our man Nick attending the probable cause hearing for Skakel, and all the courtroom drama attached. Learn more about your ad choices. This week, we travel alongside Dominick Dunne on a quest for justice in the murder of Martha Moxley, slain in the exclusive enclave of Greenwich, Connecticut, on October 30, 1975. The investigation was dormant for almost two decades, but our man Nick gets a whiff of a bigger mystery during the rape trial of William Kennedy Smith in 1991. With his curiosity aroused, Dunne begins his own investigation, resulting in his 1993 novel A Season in Purgatory, a fictional telling of the crime. But Dunne hadn't really solved anything. With the help of a confidential informant, Dunne has access to the Sutton Report – the file the Skakel family never wants seen. Dunne is going to make sure someone sees that report to continue the journey for justice for Martha. That person is former LAPD detective Mark Fuhrman. On the night before Halloween in 1975, Martha Moxley, a vibrant 15-year-old, set out to spend the evening with friends and neighbors in the upscale community of Belle Haven, Greenwich, Connecticut. By the following morning, the quiet neighborhood would be forever scarred. Martha's lifeless body was found in her backyard, brutally murdered with a golf club—a crime so shocking it reverberated across the nation. In the days following her death, investigators were faced with a tangled web of leads. What began as a local tragedy quickly unraveled into a case that highlighted the sharp divide between privilege and justice. The focus soon turned to the Skakel family, neighbors of the Moxleys and relatives of the Kennedy clan. Reports indicated Martha had spent her final evening with the Skakel brothers, Michael and Thomas, both of whom became central figures in the investigation. As the case developed, whispers of influence and power began to overshadow the pursuit of justice. Despite mounting suspicion and evidence, including accounts of inconsistent alibis and troubling behavior from members of the Skakel family, the investigation stalled. For years, the case remained cold, leaving Martha's family and the community in anguish, haunted by the lack of accountability. Over the decades, the case would resurface, each time with renewed attention and controversy. In 2000, Michael Skakel, the nephew of Ethel Kennedy, was arrested and charged with Martha's murder. His trial captivated the public as prosecutors laid out a timeline implicating Michael, citing his alleged confession to a classmate years earlier. Convicted in 2002, he was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison. However, this was far from the resolution many had hoped for. In the years following his conviction, Michael Skakel's legal team challenged the verdict, citing insufficient representation and procedural flaws. In 2013, his conviction was overturned, and he was released on bail. The case remains a contentious topic, with ongoing debates about guilt, privilege, and the elusiveness of justice. Originally recorded and release as EP 52 and EP 53 in January 2023. Martha Moxley was only 15 years old when she was found brutally murdered in her own yard in a very affluent neighborhood in Connecticut. The case went unsolved for decades until books and probs into the case drew more attention to it and an arrest and conviction was made- but technically the murder still remains unsolved today. On October 31, 1975, around 12:15 in the afternoon, Sheila McGuire, a teenager living in the exclusive Belle Haven community in Greenwich, Connecticut, was walking from her house to her friend Martha Moxley's to invite her to go downtown that day. To get to her friend's house, she cut through a wooded section of their backyard. She spotted underneath the low-hanging branches of a pine tree what looked like a sleeping bag lying on top of a foam mattress. As she continued to walk closer, she was able to see that it was the partially clothed body of her friend, Martha Moxley. Martha Moxley was a 15-year-old high school sophomore who was murdered on October 30, 1975 in Greenwich, Connecticut. Moxley was last seen alive at the home of the Skakel family, across the street from her home in Belle Haven. The case drew international attention because two of the suspects were relatives of Ethel Skakel Kennedy, Robert Kennedy's widow. Retired FBI agent Jodi Weber joins me to discuss the case. October 31, 1975. Greenwich, Connecticut. After she fails to return home the previous night, the body of 15-year old Martha Moxley is discovered in her backyard. She has been stabbed in the neck and bludgeoned with a golf club and pieces of the shattered club are traced to the residence of the Skakels, a prominent family from the neighborhood. Decades later, one of the family's children, Michael Skakel, who was 15 at the time of the crime, is charged and convicted of Martha's murder. However, Michael's conviction winds up being vacated on two separate occasions due to ineffective counsel at his trial, so he is released from prison. In 2020, the state announces that they have no plans to retry Michael, meaning there are no conclusive answers about what happened. On the night before Halloween in 1975, Martha Moxley, a vibrant 15-year-old girl, set out to spend a fateful evening with friends and neighbors. Little did anyone know that this night would mark the beginning of a harrowing mystery that would haunt the small, close-knit community of Greenwich, Connecticut. Martha's mother, Dorothy, grew increasingly alarmed when her daughter failed to return home as the night wore on. With each passing moment, her concern deepened, and she embarked on a frantic quest to locate her beloved child. She made a series of calls to neighbors, friends, and relatives, desperately seeking any information about Martha's whereabouts. To her dismay, no one had seen or heard from the young girl for hours. As the night unfolded, Dorothy's worst fears began to materialize. Unable to bear the agony of uncertainty any longer, she called the police, sparking a frenzied search for Martha that would last for hours. Exhausted and overwhelmed, Dorothy eventually succumbed to her fatigue and drifted into a restless sleep, holding on to the hope that her daughter would return safely during the night. However, when she awoke, the world came crashing down around her. Instead of her daughter's embrace, what awaited her was a horrifying discovery that would send shockwaves throughout the nation. The lifeless body of Martha Moxley lay in the backyard of their home, her face pressed into the earth, a young life brutally taken. The weapon used to commit this heinous act was a golf club, wielded from behind, leaving a community shattered and heartbroken. But what made this tragedy even more devastating was the revelation that the prime suspects in this gruesome crime were none other than members of the famous Kennedy family. The ensuing investigation would unearth a web of secrets, intrigue, and power that would keep the nation on edge, asking questions that went beyond the confines of this small suburban town. Join us as we delve deep into the chilling and enigmatic case of Martha Moxley, a tale of innocence lost, justice delayed, and a community forever scarred by a crime that transcended their idyllic surroundings. In this podcast episode, we'll unravel the layers of this haunting mystery, exploring the impact on a family, a town, and the very fabric of American society. Did Michael Skakel actually kill Martha Moxley or was someone else was responsible? This week, “The Trail Went Cold” will be releasing the first part of a special two-part episode about one of the most controversial murder cases of the past half-century. Special thanks to listener Jeremy Indick-Connelly for narrating the opening of this episode.
