00:00 – 31:07 – JMV Opens the show by inquiring what he expects to see from the Colts tonight in their preseason game. What are the position battles he’s curious to see, including the kicker battle. How does the Anthony Richardson question affect that kicking battle? John moves to the notion that the Bears would change their name from the Chicago Bears to the Indiana Bears. He circles back to the Fever conversation from yesterday and what he’s seen in the last couple days of reaction to it. 31:07– 42:15 – JMV restates that The Jackson 5 might be the only “picture-esque” thing to come out of Gary Indiana before reading at texter calling out his response to the Stephanie White press conference. Then, JMV and Caleb go through the Pacers schedule which just got released. 42:15 – 46:56 – Caleb finally watched Night Shift after John told him to. Also, on this day the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High was released. 46:56 - 1:08:54 – From CBS4/FOX59, Mike Chappell makes his weekly appearance. He explains what he’s most intrigued by in the preseason game. On Anthony Richardson, the backup wide receiver’s opportunity and if Keenan Allen is just not wanting to do training camp, the offensive line’s status and the kicking battle. Send us Fan MailWelcome to the hall of imagination, and I can't believe what I'm seeing. This is the first time that I have ever seen a wax figure who is now deceased that I saw in real life.Yes, I am Michael Jackson, and you say that you have seen me before?Yes, I saw you with your brothers at a concert in Washington DC.AH, Mr. Bartley, I believe that I remember that concert very well. And Michael, if I may call you that–this is really strange–as of talking to wax figures and hearing them respond is not strange enough - but in your case I saw you during your earthly life.Well, Mr. Bartley, Let's have some fun… or at least, let's start there. Michael, could you tell us about your very beginnings–back to the Gary Indiana days.?Yes Mr. Bartley. If you were talking about my life, it definitely does begin in fun–think of me as a kid in a tiny house in Gary, Indiana, singing my little lungs out, dancing like someone my age, trying to be heard over brothers, siblings, and the general chaos that you might find in a big family. But it doesn't end in fun.You might say, Michael, that you are a tragic warning about what happens when intense fame collide with a fragile human body and mind. Why don't you start by telling us about your early years?Certainly Mr. Bartley. I was born August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana—a working-class steel town in the Midwest. I was the eighth of ten children in the Jackson family, packed into a small house where money was tight, tempers could be hot, and music was both escape and opportunity.Support the showThank you for experiencing Celebrate Creativity.

Hear the second edition of a new segment titled “40 Indiana guitar pioneers that every Hoosier should know.” Over the next year, we'll be sharing the music and history of Indiana guitarists who made notable contributions to music. Some of these musicians are world-famous; some you may not have heard of. This is not a ranked list, and it won't be presented in any particular order. On this edition, learn about the Gary, Indiana guitarist Donald Kinsey, who played with artists including Bob Marley, Albert King and Peter Tosh. Donald Kinsey was born May 12, 1953, in Gary. He was one of three sons of Lester “Big Daddy” Kinsey, a respected Chicago blues guitarist, singer, and harmonica player who migrated from Mississippi to Gary in the mid-20th century. Music was part of Donald's life from an early age. He began playing guitar at five years old, learning chords from his father and performing in church and at local gigs. By his early teens, he had earned the nickname “B.B. King Jr.” In 1972, Donald's professional career took a major leap when he was recruited to play with Albert King, one of the most influential blues guitarists of all time. Kinsey toured extensively with King, appearing at major festivals including Wattstax and the Montreux Jazz Festival. He also recorded several albums with King, including I Wanna Get Funky and Blues at Sunrise. This was a formative period that helped Kinsey refine his technique and stage presence while reaching audiences beyond the Midwest club circuit. In the mid-1970s, Kinsey left the Albert King band to join the psychedelic rock group White Lightnin'. The band's self-titled debut album was released by Island Records in 1975. Kinsey's connection to Island Records would prove significant. The label was co-founded in Jamaica by Chris Blackwell in 1959, and Blackwell introduced Kinsey to a rising young star on the label: Bob Marley. Kinsey's career soon took an unexpected turn toward reggae. From 1975 to 1976 he toured with Bob Marley and the Wailers, appearing on Marley's classic 1976 album Rastaman Vibration and numerous live recordings. Kinsey also worked extensively with Peter Tosh, contributing to several landmark albums including Legalize It, Equal Rights, Bush Doctor, and Mama Africa. He also recorded with Burning Spear, playing guitar on the albums Dry & Heavy and Marcus' Children. Kinsey was with Marley during one of the most harrowing moments in reggae history—the attempted assassination of Marley in Kingston in December 1976, when gunmen opened fire at Marley's home. After Marley's death in 1981, Kinsey recorded a tribute titled “Song for Bob.” In 1984, Kinsey reunited with his brothers Ralph and Kenneth and their father Lester to form The Kinsey Report, a band blending electric blues, rock, and roots music. The group recorded a series of albums beginning with Edge of the City in 1987 and became known for its powerful live performances, earning critical acclaim on the blues circuit and touring across the United States and internationally. Kinsey remained active into the 2020s, performing with both the Kinsey Report and the Wailers band. Donald Kinsey died February 6, 2024, in Merrillville at age 70, just weeks after the death of his older brother Ralph.

Asher White is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, visual artist, and writer whose prolific creative practice began in her early teens. She started releasing music on Bandcamp at 14, and by her mid-20s, had self-released more than a dozen albums. Her pop vision marries disparate sounds—skittering noise with swooping strings, lively banjo with blasts of feedback—across genres including drone, folk, Tropicalia, noise rock, and chamber pop. Deeply informed by her trans identity, and Jewish spirituality, White's work is both intimate and expansive. White's 2024 album “Home Constellation Study” was praised by Pitchfork for its “imagination, complexity, and feeling.” Her sixteenth LP “8 Tips for Full Catastrophe Living“ was released in 2025 by the Indianapolis label Joyful Noise Recordings. White will perform at State Street Pub on October 1.

CUJO is a podcast about culture in the age of platforms. Episodes drop every other week, but if you want the full experience — including access to our CUJOPLEX Discord and our eternal parasocial friendship — we recommend signing up for a paid subscription.Paid subscribers also get access to The Weather Report, a new monthly episode series where we take stock of where the cultural winds are blowing and tell you what's rained into our brains. In the latest installment, cyberethnographer Ruby Justice Thelot joins us to wax philosophical about the Labubu craze, matcha and “performative male” discourse, and why politicians are lifting weights in public. To whet your appetite, we're lifting the paywall on the episode for the next 48 hours. It's easy to get the impression these days that the traditional media industry is abandoning cultural criticism. Over the past few months, outlets like The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Chicago Tribune have been reassigning or letting go of veteran film, music, and theater critics, leaving some to debate what impact, if any, written criticism still has on the culture at large. Bucking this trend (and pretty much all mainstream media logic) is The Metrograph, a new biannual print magazine about cinema from the eponymous repertory theater in New York City's Chinatown. It's long, proudly niche, intentionally disconnected from the news cycle, and available only in print—with the goal of offering deep film fans an experience they won't be able to find online, while inviting a new generation of people into the culture. The recently released second issue includes a 42-page dive into Paul Morrissey's archives, author Gary Indiana's favorite films (RIP), a history of the Japanese pink film, a “cinemap” of Belgrade, and a comic about Jerry Lewis's infamous lost film The Day the Clown Cried. The cover, which we've cropped for this episode's artwork, features a painting by artist Louise Giovanelli inspired by Christina Ricci's character in Buffalo '66.Senior editor Annabel Brady-Brown (formerly of Australia's Fireflies Press) and editor-at-large Nick Pinkerton (film critic, screenwriter of The Sweet East, creator of the Substack Employee Picks, and a former coworker of Emilie's at Kim's Video) join us to discuss the past, present, and future of independent film criticism—and what it means to make a magazine for cinephiles in 2025. We also discuss why younger people in NYC seem to be gravitating back to the movies these days, and how the hyper-IRL, videostore-centric independent film culture of 20 years ago is a good template for what that might look like in the 2020s. Finally, we shout out some of the directors, movies, and micro publications that are making right now such an exciting time for cinema in NYC — and the repertory theaters and video stores we love around the world that are keeping the old Kim's Video spirit alive.Issue 2 of The Metrograph is out now. Buy it here, or at an independent book or magazine store near you.Read more by our guests:”Less rock, more talk: On Paul Morrissey, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Ezra Pound, ‘political' art, and 1988's ‘Spike of Bensonhurst'” by Nick Pinkerton (Employee Picks) “Sunshine, lollipops and rainbows: On the subversive pleasures of Agnès Varda‘s Le Bonheur” by Annabel Brady-Brown (The Metrograph) This is a public episode. Listen to an interview with the acclaimed Gary, Indiana composer and electronic music producer Jlin. Her music has been praised by Pitchfork, NPR, Vogue, Rolling Stone and The New York Times, and she's collaborated with artists including Björk and Philip Glass.  Born Jerrilynn Patton in 1987, Jlin's bold, genre-defying work has reshaped the landscape of experimental electronic music. Her rhythmically dense and emotionally intense style emerged from footwork, a high-speed dance music rooted in the underground music culture of Chicago. But Jlin's sound evolved over time, becoming an unmistakably original voice that transcends categorization.  Jlin rose to prominence with her 2015 debut Dark Energy. The album was immediately hailed as a landmark in contemporary electronic music. Both The Quietus and The Wire named it Album of the Year, and Pitchfork included Dark Energy in its Top 20 Albums of 2015. Her follow-up album, Black Origami further solidified her status as a leading avant-garde composer. The album received almost universal acclaim, with The New York Times, Rolling Stone, NPR, and The Guardian including Black Origami in their the Best Albums of 2017 lists. Jlin's latest, album Akoma has also garnered widespread critical acclaim.  Beyond her solo releases, Jlin's influence has expanded into the worlds of dance, classical music, and performance art. She has composed for the renowned Kronos Quartet and her music has been used by choreographers including Wayne McGregor and Kyle Abraham. Despite her international recognition, Jlin has remained firmly rooted in her hometown Gary, Indiana.
