Not only is any depression rate in children unacceptable, but the fact that it has risen this much is a catastrophe on our futures. Cynthia Armstrong with the Pasco County Schools joins us today to share what resources school systems are putting in place for parents to protect their children from bullying. Cynthia discusses the new approaches schools are taking to cyberbullying - in and outside of school. The reaches of the school system are no longer limited by the school fence, parents have resources available 24 hours a day. If your child is being harassed at home, while tucked away in bed and surfing her mobile phone under the covers, you have resources and protections available. October is my absolute favorite month of the year! It has Halloween, which my favorite holiday! No family involvement, just fun costumes, parties and a good time all month long. That's why I got married in October. So, today, on October 1st... you will always find me at my favorite coffee house having my first Pumpkin Spiced Latte of the year. Yum.... October is also CyberSecurity Awareness Month... and we are kicking off the month with a dive into cyberbullying. Today we are sitting with Patrick Craven, Director of Center for Cyber Safety and Education. We are discussing the real effects of cyberbullying and the real life tactics parents and trusted adults can use to protect the little ones in their lives. Patrick explains that bullying has morphed since we were all kids... bullies don't have to be brave anymore and take you on eyeball to eyeball or toe to toe. No... they now can hide behind the safety of their devices and attack with full force. And they multiply quickly... hear how easy it is for kids to go from a few to hundreds or even thousands picking on your child... when you thought he was just in his room checking on homework after dinner. This is serious stuff. Fortunately, Patrick has real advice to share with teachers and parents - not just on how to protect your kids - but what to do if and WHEN they actually get bullied or cyberstalked. As I’ve been learning how to deal with my untreated PTSD, I've been learning alot about mindfulness meditation. This has greatly helped me these past couple months set some of the anxiety aside and generally learn how to be ok with the new found peace in my life (much easier typed/said then done!). Mindfulness meditation practice couldn’t be simpler: take a good seat, pay attention to the breath, and when your attention wanders, return. By following these simple steps, you can get to know yourself up close and personal. I’d love to hear from you on how this works out for you. Email the show at speak@savelori.org and let me know how you are doing. Please reference Episode 008 in the subject line, so I know it's you sharing with me. Earlier this year, when I was looking for answers… grasping at straws for something to explain what I was feeling, going through and experiencing, I came across a Ted Talk – by way of a dear friend. The ted talk featured Dr. Nadine Harris – who talked about how childhood trauma affects health across a lifetime. Only because a friend sent me the link did I listen to this while driving. Shortly into the Ted Talk, I had to pull over, this doctor was hitting way to close for drive time. I ended up listening to this podcast two more times at home the same night, and immediately bought her book “The Deepest Well” and listened to it fervently on audible over the next two days. The ACEs score is a metric on a scale of 1-10 (10 being worst) that tallies up the types of trauma you may have experienced as a child. According to Dr. Harris, 64% of adults in America have an ACE Score of at least 1. The numbers get more chilling as the higher your ACE score gets. Did you experience, before the age of 18 any of the following? Emotional Abuse, recurrent Physical Abuse, recurrent Sexual abuse, contact at least once Physical neglect Emotional neglect Substance abuse in the household Mental illness in the household Mother treated violently Divorce or parental separation Criminal behavior in the household I feel your pain and shock. Any one of these would be a shame for any child to experience. But multiple? That’s where the ACES study and Dr. Nadine’s work really takes off. Dr. Nadine and her colleagues were able to draw a definitive scientific line between high ACE scores and bad health outcomes in adults. What kind of bad health outcomes? For starters, there’s obesity – check for me and hubby. Anxiety – check check. Asthma – check for my hubby. CPD – not yet but we are concerned. So now what do you do with all this information? For me, I started this podcast as I look for answers from guests on how to deal with my untreated PTSD and high ACE score of 9. It’s still such a new science with very little outcomes yet, that there’s not a lot of literature. Fortunately, we can take our cues from the military and how their returning warriors deal with their PTSD. Many of them are working in the community sharing their healing tactics – because PTSD is not just for the military – it’s for all of us normal people who experienced abnormal traumas. Today we’re talking about finding hope when there is no reason to have any. I know this can be a daunting issue, but today we’re going to break down some vocabulary so it’s a lot less scary. I will be sharing my story with you and my hope is that it becomes a beacon of hope for someone out there. There’s no better way to find hope and healing then right now where you are. In later episodes we’re going to interview other people affected by all forms of bullying and receive hope from their resiliency. We’re going to hear from their champions, those who have been bullied and the various experts around the country providing hope and healing to the bullied, their champions, the bullies themselves and the silent witnesses who stood by and did nothing. This isn’t any run of the mill podcast. You aren’t going to take pages of notes and fill out your to do list. Rather, my hope is to touch your heart and make an impact on how you approach your future life and those that you love. In order to do that, first, I’m going to share with you why I started this podcast and my story. Then I’ll show you where to find local resources in your community and get you on the path for healing. My hope, my prayer, is that if you are a parent, a sister, brother, best friend, husband or wife that you will stay tuned into this message. The modern world we live in is changing faster then we humans can adapt. This doesn’t make us any safer. We humans need to equip ourselves to champion the ones we love, especially in the very moment they can’t protect themselves, even if we don’t know how. o o o I wish I was sitting at the table right across from you so I can see the look in your eye. Is there recognition to my story? Fear? Bewilderment? Or did I just hit too close to home? The one thing that stinks about podcasts is I can’t see your beautiful eyes and know how you are. Please don’t leave me wondering, reach out to me and send me an email at speakup at savelori dot org that’s lori l-o-r-i Once again that email address is speak up at save lori dot org Put Episode Zero in your subject line so I know it’s you! I’m going to confess, this episode was really hard for me to share. But it’s in no comparison to the pain you may be in if you are in trauma right now. One of the first books I read on the Socipoathic disorder is called “The Sociopath Next Door” by Martha Stout. I got it on Amazon and the link to it is in the show notes. That book was actually referenced in the first book I read called “Sociopath and psychopath: The Worst of Both Worlds” by Ken Fisher. Also available on Amazon and linked in the show notes. Before you judge and snub your nose at the mere mention of the word sociopath, I want to clarify something for you. This is going to be hard for you to swallow because you are an American, as it was for me when I first learned about it. First 3% of all NORMAL American adults are sociopaths. That’s TWICE the world average. They are everywhere and can be anyone. The bad news is that we Americans love them! More about why on our website with a link to Psychology Today. Second, sociopaths fall on the mental health spectrum between narcissists and psychopaths. Sociopaths and psychopaths both biologically lack what the rest of us humans have – a conscience. I know it’s extremely hard to believe life without that little Jiminy Cricket on our shoulder telling us what’s right and wrong. But there it is!! They just don’t have it! They really don’t know the difference between right and wrong and a lie and a truth. For that reason alone they can pass a lie detector test and get away with theft, murder and other bad things. And have. REFERENCES Sociopath and Psycopath by Ken Fisher The Sociopath Next Door by Martha Stout, ph.d.
