October is my absolute favorite month of the year! It has Halloween, which my favorite holiday! No family involvement, just fun costumes, parties and a good time all month long. That's why I got married in October. So, today, on October 1st... you will always find me at my favorite coffee house having my first Pumpkin Spiced Latte of the year. Yum.... October is also CyberSecurity Awareness Month... and we are kicking off the month with a dive into cyberbullying. Today we are sitting with Patrick Craven, Director of Center for Cyber Safety and Education. We are discussing the real effects of cyberbullying and the real life tactics parents and trusted adults can use to protect the little ones in their lives. Patrick explains that bullying has morphed since we were all kids... bullies don't have to be brave anymore and take you on eyeball to eyeball or toe to toe. No... they now can hide behind the safety of their devices and attack with full force. And they multiply quickly... hear how easy it is for kids to go from a few to hundreds or even thousands picking on your child... when you thought he was just in his room checking on homework after dinner. This is serious stuff. Fortunately, Patrick has real advice to share with teachers and parents - not just on how to protect your kids - but what to do if and WHEN they actually get bullied or cyberstalked. He's been a lazy cat over the past few decades, but Garfield is back, and helping users navigate a changing and sometimes daunting online world. FOX's Joy Piazza explains in this edition of "FOX on Tech": When the "Garfield" comic strip first hit newsstands in 1978, "going online" wasn't a thing. Now that lazy feline is helping kids and adults alike navigate the 'web safely: (Davis) "We've been working very hard to take our analog cat into digital world now." "Garfield" creator Jim Davis partnered with the Center for Cyber Safety and Education to make a series of online safety adventures: (Davis) "People by nature are very trusting, so when someone asks them to share their phone number or password or something like that, they tend to." The center's director Patrick Craven says some holiday toys and gadgets could lure online thieves: (Craven) "When you sign into some of these things, you're giving them access to your contacts on your phone or on your social media site and things like that. Do you really want them to have that? So what would Garfield's Facebook profile look like?: (Davis) "Favorite food: Lasagna. Favorite pastime: Sleeping and eating, it would be a very short profile." Garfield's adventures are on SafeAndSecureOnline.org. With FOX on Tech, I'm Joy Piazza, FOX News.
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has criticised Eskom's proposed electricity tariff hike, saying the increase is unjustified.
In this week's program, Khalil Bendib in conversation with two labor activists who share with us progress made within the labor movements – internationally and domestically – around the issue of solidarity Palestine. Patrick Craven of COSATU (The Congress of South African Trade Unions http://www.cosatu.org.za/cosatuho.htm ) discusses the latest action taken by a South African union that refused to offload an Israeli ship last month to protest Israel's bloody massacres in Gaza, and Michael Eisencher of USLAW in Alameda County will talk about nascent efforts from within to break the US labor movement's long-standing silence and complicity in the ethnic cleansing of Palestine. Later in the show, two Bay Area-based Algerian-born musicians, singer-songwriter-activist Moh Alileche and DJ and music producer extraordinaire Chab-i-Sabbah, join us to tell us about an upcoming concert at Ashkenaz in Berkeley on Saturday, March 14.
