Slam the Gavel welcomes back Riti Chikkerur to the podcast. Riti was last on Season 3, Episode 154. Today she is accompanied by Attorney Kelly March in Colorado. Today we discussed Our Children Matter Most, Inc. where Riti Chikkerur is Executive Director of the OCMM, a non-profit and in the process of restructuring as a Benefit Corporation and collaborates with NAACP. Why can't doing good be profitable? Because it is solution based. Riti is in the process of going to law school.   TILA-LABS (Trauma Informed Legal Advocacy) was discussed which provides holistic approach and solutions to the parents and also to the legal community. This will include nutrition, legal, spiritual and mental health. They will soon be launching TILA-LABS, a one-stop holistic trauma informed view on a parent's situation, helping to resolve it.     Attorney Kelly March, in Colorado since 2010, began to see how corrupt and backwards some situations can get in the family courts. Attorney March saw that certain families could benefit from TILA-LABS as they become overwhelmed by the system. A holistic approach would be so beneficial to families and shorten  court cases which would in turn benefit the children. To Reach Riti Chikkerur and Attorney Kelly March:  www.ourchildrenmattermost.org or dismantlingfamilycourtcorruption.com***** Supportshow(https://www.buymeacoffee.com/maryannpetri)Maryann Petri: dismantlingfamilycourtcorruption.comhttps://www.tiktok.com/@maryannpetriFacebook:  https://www.youtube.com/@slamthegavelpodcasthostmar5536Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/guitarpeace/Pinterest: Slam The Gavel Podcast/@guitarpeaceLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/maryann-petri-62a46b1ab/  YouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/@slamthegavelpodcasthostmar5536  Twitter https://x.com/PetriMaryannEzlegalsuit.comhttps://ko-fi.com/maryannpetri*DISCLAIMER* The use of this information is at the viewer/user's own risk. The last time Laurie was on we discussed how Mother's Day, Father's Day is a mixed bag for all of Us.     Today we talked about how important the ACE's Scores are and how intergenerational trauma plays into them. Laurie pulled up on the screen (you can watch on YouTube) and showed diagrams of what actually plays into the ACE's Score and the solution is to be proactive. 2/3rds of the population score at least 1 on the ACE's. People with a score of six on the ACE's run more of a risk of dying 20 years early. 1/8th of the population has a score of six.     Laurie explains the root causes and solutions. "It is easy to get into the tunnel vision of 'this is happening to me and I can't do anything about it,' AND if we walk through the world knowing that 2/3rds of the the population have at least 1 on the ACE's Score, everyone needs to know how this will impact their child." Bear in mind the 2/3rds of judges have scored at least 1 on the ACE's this is an opening to discuss how harmful they are being to others.Laurie's information:  https://www.facebook.com/share/p/kKyEVgR9ThcpjX3s/?mibextid=qi2Omgdismantlingfamilycourtcorruption.com*DISCLAIMER* The use of this information is at the viewer/user's own risk. On this episode of Faith Beyond Limits, we discuss a topic considered taboo in church today: mental health. Our guest is Sheena Torres-Nunez, a licensed practitioner under the Florida State Health Department. We will discuss the ACE Score and the importance of addressing mental health. We need to learn to say, "What happened to you?" instead of "What's wrong with you?" We will learn about The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Score, a tool used to measure the total amount of stress experienced during childhood, which can have a significant impact on mental health outcomes later in life. Torres-Nunez emphasizes the importance of understanding and addressing these experiences rather than simply treating the symptoms of mental illness. Additionally, the episode mentions the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) organization, which is dedicated to supporting individuals and families affected by mental illness and advocating for improved mental health care. By raising awareness and reducing stigma surrounding mental illness, organizations like NAMI and conversations like those on the Dr. Phil podcast can help promote a more compassionate and effective approach to addressing mental health. Y'all, I don't even know where to begin on the notes for this episode! So much good information; you will want to take notes! We both took about 4-5 pages of notes in this fascinating conversation. Dr. Barbara Sorrels is a childhood trauma expert that we both heard in our teaching seminars; we were so excited that she agreed to chat with us on the podcast. She grew up in Washington, D.C. and began working in hospitals with children who had experienced trauma, and she knew this would be her mission. Dr. Sorrels writes books and trains others about how to recognize and deal with children who have experienced woundings that affected them deeply. Dr. Sorrels is a wife, mom, and grandmother. Her husband had a terrible accident while on a short-term mission trip to Africa that left him paralyzed. This happened while they were dating, and she has spent her life loving and caring for him. Her own experiences have shaped her faith and commitment to Christ and given her a deeper understanding of those she works with. She tells us the difference between trauma and severe stress, how to help regulate babies who have experienced trauma, and strategies for working with others. We also talk about ACES, what this tool is, what it means if you have an ACE Score, and how to have protective factors. Dr. Sorrels told us that Jesus is the #1 protective factor available to us. We learned that people with strong faith come back with hope, and having a sense of purpose helps us get through. As many of you know, I've been investing a lot recently in my new community. It's called Parenting After Religious Trauma and, in it, we explore the impact of childhood trauma and specifically religious trauma. We discuss the impact that it has on the rest of our adult lives and parenting.  This all comes back to one of my core beliefs, the thesis of my book Parenting Forward: if we change the way we parent, we can change the world. As time goes on, I only become more and more convinced of this truth. It becomes more and more evident that so much of what happens in our childhood determines the kind of person, neighbor, friend, partner, parent, and citizen that we become.  So today, I have Dr. Carol Scott on the show to talk all about this. Dr. Carol is a TEDx speaker and author of two books. Her expertise is in childhood trauma and how that impacts relationships which she believes is the foundation of success in so many areas of our lives. Tune in to join in on our incredible conversation. Show Highlights: Dr. Carol's journey of realizing the impact her childhood trauma had on her adult life. Why 5-7 years old is a critical time for setting social and relational patterns. How trust issues can develop when we're infants. The difference between unlearning and rewiring our brain patterns. Why healing has to start with admitting that what you experienced in childhood was not okay. How to intentionally nurture our kids' development and emotions without being paranoid about harming them. Why our priority should be making our kids feel seen. How being trauma-informed helps us having better relationships in adulthood. How to figure out your needs and ask for them to be met. In this podcast, I interview Dave Lockridge, the founder of ACE Overcomers a Center for Resiliency and Trauma-Informed Training. Dave shares a about The ACE Study, the largest study of its kind with more than 17,000 participants. The purpose of the study was to see how stressful and traumatic childhood experiences influence later physical and emotional health. The study observed 10 types of adverse childhood experiences: emotional, physical, and sexual abuse, emotional neglect, physical neglect, domestic violence against the mother, mental illness of a family member, substance abuse in the home, parental separation or divorce, imprisonment of a household member. As your ACE score increases, the risk for the following health problems increases in a strong and graded fashion: alcoholism and alcohol abuse, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), depression, ischemic heart disease (IHD), liver disease, fetal death, illicit drug use, smoking, attempted suicide, unintended pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, partner violence, obesity. Dave specializes in teaching survivors of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) how to understand trauma, so they can better care for themselves while overcoming the effects of ACEs. Often times, society minimizes or dismisses traumatic experiences as just another minute experience to get over. What some in society fail to realize is the impact adverse childhood experiences has on an individual. You may think, well, its no big deal, just adjust and get over it, or how about you don't thing of it at all. I wish it was that easy. Adverse Childhood Experiences can leave a person so broken to the point of physically crippling that individual. We're talking with Fritzi Horstman.  She's the Founder and Executive Director of the Compassion Prison Project.  Before that, she was a Grammy Award Winning producer of projects like HBO's “The Defiant Ones” as well as dozens of television projects, documentaries, and several films.  In 2018, Fritzi had the experience of visiting a high-security prison and while she was there her heart broke.  She saw some things she thought needed to change, so she dove in to help.  A video that demonstrates the amazing work of the CPP has gone viral with millions of views.  In fact, that's how I came across Fritzi's story.  After watching the video… I dug into the story and was so impressed I wanted to have her on to share about her journey! She's the example of someone who saw something that needed to be fixed and she came up with a tangible solution to help.  I think it will inspire you.  Let's get to it.     Listen To The Podcast:     RESOURCES: The Compassion Prison Project's Website: compassionprisonproject.org More info from the CDC on childhood trauma and the ACE Score: www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention Facebook: @compassionprisonproject  Instagram: @compassion.prison.project    The CPP Video we talked about: Step Inside the Circle from Fritzi Horstman on Vimeo.   MORE INFORMATION ON THE EPISODE: On February 12… 235 incarcerated men gathered in the yard of a California maximum-security prison to learn something about themselves. These men formed a huge circle… and our guest… Fritzi Horstman… stood in the middle of that circle… alone… with a microphone… guiding them through an incredible process of awareness and healing. Maybe you've seen the viral video that helps to tell the story… a million+ people have watched it… and it's amazing.  (It's featured in the resources section above.) Fritzi reads a series of statements.  Each time… if these men could say yes to the statement… about their childhood… about the environment, they grew up in… about the abuse and trauma they faced… about the incredible challenges, they'd had to deal with… then they were asked to step further into the circle. It's a circle of compassion. It's a circle of no shame. It's a circle of healing. Again… if you've seen the video… you know it's an incredibly powerful and incredibly revealing process that we can all learn from.   And that's just the beginning of the “Compassion Prison Project” started by Fritzi. This week, we're going to talk with her about how she went from being a Grammy Award Winning producer to be the Founder and Executive Director of the Compassion Prison Project. I hope it inspires you to DREAM and to THINK about the places where you see a problem that needs to be fixed… and to ask… “What can I DO to help?”   MINUTE BY MINUTE: 0:02 What to expect today 2:05 Meet Fritzi Horstman 3:59 The back story of how it got started 4:37 More about the Compassion Prison Project 7:42 How trauma-affected Fritzi 9:30 How extreme poverty affects the brain 12:43 When Fritzi decided to be the change 16:55 The peace that comes with not judging 18:39 Become a problem solver 21:59 The ACE test 25:36 How Fritzi has overcome her own childhood trauma 27:49 How to connect with Fritzi 28:39 Mitch's biggest takeaways   WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! So… I know one of my favorite parts of the conversation was when Fritzi talked about seeing the problem but she looked at it through her experience.   Yes… I loved it when she said, “I'm a producer.  I fix problems!”   She reframed this huge challenge and although she didn't have experience with the prison systems… she gave herself permission to explore possible solutions.  She didn't wait.  She started.  She asked, “What can I do?” and she took action.  That's huge! How about you? What's something that stood out to you from the conversation?   Leave a comment and let me know!

The root system of a tree is its hidden protection against the harsh realities of wind and drought and disease. For people, loving and healthy childhood attachments are our central hidden protection against the inevitable losses and tragedies of life. But what happens when these early attachments aren't safe and secure?Jami's childhood emotional neglect and abuse and profound loneliness left her attachment roots shallow and damaged, yet her inner fire and natural resilience helped her to grow up strong and healthy despite the childhood challenges. When the winds of loss and grief started to blow, she came toppling down, twice. This led to a long list of failed treatments, benzodiazepine dependence and its horrors, and even a brief course of ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) when seemingly all other options had failed. And today, she again stands strong and tall, a testament to her refusal to give up and to relationships that have helped to scaffold her and compensate for those early traumas.Adverse childhood experiences and effects on long-term resilience and risk of chronic illnesshttps://www.acesconnection.com/blog/got-your-ace-resilience-scoresMajor depressive episode vs "nervous breakdown"https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/how-everyone-became-depressed/201309/bring-back-the-nervous-breakdownKetamine vs ECThttps://www.psychiatryadvisor.com/home/topics/mood-disorders/depressive-disorder/short-term-treatments-for-depression-ketamine-vs-ect/Dr. Hhttps://www.craigheacockmd.com

Exploring the dangers of Disney’s take on poverty, mental health, and relationships. With backgrounds in medical humanities and school therapy and social work, Jenifer Fisher and Nikki York describe a recent project analysing Disney films in terms of how they depict poverty and mental illness and what solutions they present to these problems (almost always: get yourself rescued by one perfect relationship). Their analysis found a strong, and realistic, correlation between characters' adverse childhood experiences (ACE) score (a measure of neglect and abuse) and the incidence of poverty and mental illness in their portrayals. Our conversation explores concepts of the 'self-made man' and the 'virtuous poor', the reduction in emphasis on poverty in films since 1937, and the dangerous consequences of presenting singular relationships as solutions to mental health problems.

Recently I have been researching the fascinating field of childhood trauma and uncovered an interesting link between adverse childhood experiences and Hashimoto’s disease. One of the studies I discovered came out of a large, important public health study, The ACE Study, but it focused specifically on cumulative childhood stress and autoimmune disease in adults. What are adverse childhood experiences? Adverse childhood experiences, or ACEs, are experiences that expose individuals under the age of 18 to childhood traumatic stress. These experiences include physical, emotional or sexual abuse; witnessing domestic violence; growing up with household substance abuse, mental illness, parental divorce, and/or the incarceration of a household member. Who was studied? A group of 15,357 adult Kaiser Permanente health maintenance organization members available for follow-up through 2005 was involved in this study. They were selected from the ACE Study, which was performed from 1995 to 1997. These individuals are interesting because while many studies have looked at inner-city poor people of color, this study’s participants were mostly white, middle and upper-middle class college-educated San Diegans with good jobs and great health care. This highly educated population was made up of 40 percent college graduates. Of the remaining individuals, 36% had some college education, 17% were high school graduates (i.e., they had 12 years of education). Only 7% had not completed high school. What did they measure? The study authors looked at the data from the ACE Study and created an ACE Score that included eight types of interrelated and co-occurring exposure to childhood adversity to measure cumulative childhood traumatic stress. So, the greater the number of adverse experiences, the higher the score. The ACE Study Questionnaire is very simple and includes the following 10 questions.   “While you were growing up, during your first 18 years of life:   1) Did a parent or other adult in the household often …   Swear at you, insult you, put you down, or humiliate you? or Act in a way that made you afraid that you might be physically hurt?   2) Did a parent or other adult in the household often …   Push, grab, slap, or throw something at you? or Ever hit you so hard that you had marks or were injured?   3) Did an adult or person at least 5 years older than you ever…   Touch or fondle you or have you touch their body in a sexual way? or Try to or actually have oral, anal, or vaginal sex with you?   4) Did you often feel that …   No one in your family loved you or thought you were important or special? or Your family didn’t look out for each other, feel close to each other, or support each other?   5) Did you often feel that …   You didn’t have enough to eat, had to wear dirty clothes, and had no one to protect you? or Your parents were too drunk or high to take care of you or take you to the doctor if you needed it?   6) Were your parents ever separated or divorced?   7) Was your mother or stepmother:   Often pushed, grabbed, slapped, or had something thrown at her? or Sometimes or often kicked, bitten, hit with a fist, or hit with something hard? or Ever repeatedly hit over at least a few minutes or threatened with a gun or knife?   8) Did you live with anyone who was a problem drinker or alcoholic or who used street drugs?   9) Was a household member depressed or mentally ill or did a household member attempt suicide?   10) Did a household member go to prison?”   If the answer was yes to any of these questions, the respondents were allocated one point. Next, the authors looked at those scores and compared them with the risk of 21 different autoimmune diseases that resulted in hospitalization. These illnesses included Graves’ disease, diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome,

Earlier this year, when I was looking for answers… grasping at straws for something to explain what I was feeling, going through and experiencing, I came across a Ted Talk – by way of a dear friend.  The ted talk featured Dr. Nadine Harris – who talked about how childhood trauma affects health across a lifetime. Only because a friend sent me the link did I listen to this while driving.  Shortly into the Ted Talk, I had to pull over, this doctor was hitting way to close for drive time.  I ended up listening to this podcast two more times at home the same night, and immediately bought her book “The Deepest Well” and listened to it fervently on audible over the next two days.  The ACEs score is a metric on a scale of 1-10 (10 being worst) that tallies up the types of trauma you may have experienced as a child.  According to Dr. Harris, 64% of adults in America have an ACE Score of at least 1. The numbers get more chilling as the higher your ACE score gets.   Did you experience, before the age of 18 any of the following? Emotional Abuse, recurrent Physical Abuse, recurrent Sexual abuse, contact at least once Physical neglect Emotional neglect Substance abuse in the household Mental illness in the household Mother treated violently Divorce or parental separation Criminal behavior in the household I feel your pain and shock.  Any one of these would be a shame for any child to experience.  But multiple?  That’s where the ACES study and Dr. Nadine’s work really takes off. Dr. Nadine and her colleagues were able to draw a definitive scientific line between high ACE scores and bad health outcomes in adults.  What kind of bad health outcomes?  For starters, there’s obesity – check for me and hubby.  Anxiety – check check.  Asthma – check for my hubby.  CPD – not yet but we are concerned. So now what do you do with all this information?  For me, I started this podcast as I look for answers from guests on how to deal with my untreated PTSD and high ACE score of 9.  It’s still such a new science with very little outcomes yet, that there’s not a lot of literature.  Fortunately, we can take our cues from the military and how their returning warriors deal with their PTSD.  Many of them are working in the community sharing their healing tactics – because PTSD is not just for the military – it’s for all of us normal people who experienced abnormal traumas.
