Below you will find her contact information as well as five steps to respond to sexual abuse when a child discloses. Now let's get down to the white meat! Five steps to respond to disclosure of sexual abuse from your child: 1. Believe them and validate their disclosure: " I am so sorry this happen to you and I believe you" will help them feel safe 2. Do not ask any details that were not readily given. It is important that the child is not traumatized further for lack of effectively being able to process what has occurred with your child. 3. Try not to react. Your child is already in a very fragile state when disclosing this information. Try not to react in a way that will cause further fear, anxiety, or worry ( such as stating you will cause harm to the perpetrator) 4. Contact advocacy center immediately. There are individuals trained to provide supports needed for your child to heal and criminal investigation to take place if you choose to move forward in this manner. 5. Do not immediately reach out to other family members to disclose the information or attempt to confront the perpetrator along with your child. This will cause further trauma for your child. **National sexual abuse hotline: 1-800-656-4673** Guest contact information: Chiquita Tillman. Author of " I AM A Ruby Not A Sapphire".
