Today's Headlines: Hurricane Melissa tore through the Caribbean just as feared, leaving dozens dead and catastrophic damage across Jamaica, Cuba, and Haiti before weakening to a Category 1 on its way to the Bahamas. Nearly 80% of Jamaica is still without power, and hundreds remain missing across the islands. In Gaza, Israel resumed airstrikes that killed around 100 people after a soldier was shot in Rafah — but quickly announced the ceasefire was back on. Hamas says it's delaying the return of hostage remains in response to the strikes. Trump, meanwhile, is still globe-trotting — now in South Korea, where he announced the U.S. will share sensitive nuclear submarine technology, one of the country's most tightly guarded military secrets. This comes months after North Korea bragged about its own nuclear-powered sub. Back home, a new Pentagon memo ordered all 50 states, D.C., and U.S. territories to form “quick reaction forces” — over 23,000 National Guard troops trained for riot control — to respond to potential unrest. The administration also indicted its first Gen Z political figure: 26-year-old Illinois Democrat Kat Abughazaleh, charged with assaulting an ICE officer during a protest — charges that could carry up to 14 years in prison. On the money front, the Senate symbolically voted against Trump's 50% tariffs on Brazil (which won't actually change anything), the Fed cut interest rates another 0.25%, and the shutdown continues as millions risk losing food aid. The Dow hit a record 48,000 — mostly thanks to AI stocks — even as layoffs surge at UPS, Nestlé, and Amazon. And in some good news for once, philanthropist Mackenzie Scott donated $60 million to the Center for Disaster Philanthropy and another $38 million to Alabama State University — the largest gift in the HBCU's 158-year history. Green's career would lead him to Tuskegee University in 2000 where he served as the Compliance Officer, Defensive Coordinator for Football, and the Head Men & Women Tennis Coach. While at Tuskegee for the next five years Coach Green's legacy of success still reigned true on the football field with a nationally ranked defense each year and four SIAC Conference Football Champs. This success was mirrored on the tennis courts with four SIAC Conference Tennis Championships; six NCAA Tennis Tournament appearances; five-time SIAC Highest Team GPA for Men and Women; and four SIAC Conference Tennis Coach of the Year. A generation of college students had their experiences forever altered by a global pandemic in 2020. Those times were difficult for many students, but for Jaicee Christian and Amir McKinstry, two Alabama natives who initially attended Alabama State University together, it only helped them to lock in even further. Even as Amir transferred down the road to Tuskegee, they maintained their tight friendship and kept each other focused on the prize. All roads in youth baseball and softball development roads converge this weekend in Montgomery, Alabama, for the first-ever Flyball Jubilee. The event is presented by The Players Alliance in partnership with the city of Montgomery. According to the Associated Press, Taraji P. Henson will receive an honorary AARP Purpose Prize for her work in eradicating the stigma surrounding mental health in marginalized communities. The organization announced that Henson, founder of the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation, will be honored at a ceremony on Oct. 1 in Washington, D.C. Henson's foundation, launched in 2018 in memory of her father, who battled untreated mental health issues after Vietnam, focuses on providing mental health resources and support. Henson expressed her hope that AARP's recognition will encourage more people to discuss their struggles openly and seek help. The pair broke their paper down into financing, staffing, and regulations to uncover the importance, possibilities, and difficulties of supporting long-term care in rural areas. “Bringing awareness is the main thing and it's great that we have all these different avenues and different ways of doing it..” – Lex Pierre Jeff has been in the healthcare field for nearly 30 years in a range of roles from Sales to HR in pharmaceuticals, medical device, dental, fitness, and telemedicine. Currently and for the last 15 years he's been running a telemedicine company providing physician services to rural and critical access hospitals. He derives great satisfaction providing access through technology to critical care specialists, hospitalists, infectious disease, and cardiology physicians that aren't available to patients locally. He lives in N.CA wine country with his wife, three daughters, and golden retriever. When not working he's usually on a bicycle in the mountains or on a country road. As Director of Dentistry for Chambers Health, Lex is responsible for overseeing all operations within the dental department. He has been committed to providing superior dental care to underserved areas since graduating from dental school. His focus remains on addressing rural oral health disparities by increasing and promoting oral health access. Lex earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Alabama State University and his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Dentistry. He is currently pursuing fellowships within the Academy of General Dentistry and the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Lex travels nationally to attend the best continued educations to stay up to date with all the innovation within the dental field.
