At some point we’ve all had doubts about the path we’ve started ourselves on. Your career is about to take off. The feeling of excitement and anticipation is bubbling inside of you. It may be a place you’ve always wanted to work, where the people have the same drive you do. Maybe it’s a different city, where the pay is really good. All of these things are great, until you hit that inevitable bump. It could be a boss, certain co-workers, or just the work itself. We have all heard stories of workplace bullies, toxic work environments and culture. If you’re a young pro or even an experienced one, how can you face these pains and not feel like the walls are closing in? Megan talks with Tati Petkovic about the challenges faced starting out and what it did to her confidence as a person and professional. In 2019, Tati started teaching Process for Graphic Designers at OCAD University. Tati has freelanced at multiple award-winning design studios in Toronto, Ontario, Canada including Parcel Design, aftermodern.lab, Weaymouth Creative, Cundari, and Clearspace Design. The words “diversity” and “inclusion” have been top of mind students, university presidents, as well as employees and industry leaders in the last few years. A 2018 survey by the Society of Human Resource Management stated that 55-percent of respondents "very strongly" or "strongly agree" that their employers' policies promote diversity and inclusion. In 2017, a survey of more than 80 chief diversity officers found that 62-percent said that their positions were inaugural for their campuses—a sign that the chief diversity officer role continues to grow. To gain the perspective of what colleges and universities are doing to address diversity and inclusion, Megan and Jason chat with Priya Doshi, a professor in American University’s School of Communication.
