Labor Pains: Dealing with infertility and loss during pregnancy or infancy.
Have you ever forgotten a familiar word, sensed your loved one nearby, or cried unexpectedly and wondered, “Am I going crazy?” You are not alone, and in many cases, you are grieving. In this solo episode of Female Voices: Life & Loss, Teresa Reiniger explores the surprising ways grief can affect the brain, body, heart, and nervous system. Through compassionate stories and relatable everyday moments, Teresa explains why grieving people may struggle with memory, concentration, decision-making, exhaustion, emotional inconsistency, or the feeling that they heard, smelled, or sensed someone they lost. She also discusses why grief can surface in ordinary places, from the grocery store to a quiet self-care appointment, and why having a good day does not mean you are forgetting the person you love. Listeners will receive reassurance that grief does not follow a straight line, healing is not measured by the absence of tears, and joy is not a betrayal of love.Teresa Reiniger is a certified grief specialist, NLP master coach, life transition guide, founder of Living After Grief, and host of Female Voices: Life & Loss. She brings years of experience walking alongside women through grief, loss, identity changes, and life transitions. In This Episode● Why grief can affect memory, concentration, energy, and decision-making● Why people sometimes hear, smell, dream about, or sense someone they lost● How familiar routines remain wired into the brain after a loved one dies● Why ordinary questions, objects, songs, and places can activate grief● How the nervous system responds to loss, trauma, caregiving, and prolonged survival● Why laughter, joy, and new memories do not erase loveWhat You'll Take Away● Forgetfulness does not automatically mean your mind is failing.● A difficult day does not erase your healing.● Grief and joy can exist together.● Your grief does not need to look like anyone else's.● Self-compassion may help replace fear and shame.MEMORABLE QUOTESTeresa: “What if, instead of asking, ‘What's wrong with me?' you begin asking, ‘What has my heart been carrying?'”Teresa: “Understanding what's happening doesn't erase grief, but it often removes fear.”Teresa: “Your experience doesn't need someone else's permission to be meaningful.”Teresa: “That isn't failure. That's attachment. That's love.”Teresa: “Joy is not betrayal. Healing is not forgetting.”Teresa: “There isn't one right way to grieve. There's only your way.”TIMESTAMPS01:01 — Am I Going Crazy—or Is This Grief?04:30 — The Experiences Grieving People Rarely Discuss09:00 — Why the Brain Keeps Searching for Them14:00 — When Grief Hides Inside Ordinary Moments19:00 — Grief Brain, Forgetfulness, and Mental Exhaustion24:00 — How the Nervous System Responds to Loss29:00 — Why Grief Can Feel Unpredictable34:00 — Healing Does Not Move in a Straight Line39:00 — Joy Is Not a Betrayal44:00 — When Years of Survival Affect the Body49:00 — There Is No One Right Way to Grieve54:00 — What Has Your Heart Been Carrying?
Welcome back to another unstructured In My Opinion episode. Matt shares an update on losing weight to run faster, the explosion of Chinese super shoes and Dynafish, a potential marathon world record attempt in jeans, HYROX plans, coaching updates and why he has backed away from frequent sauna use. The main discussion centres around losing weight to run faster, prompted partly by Josh Kerr's visible change in body composition alongside his recent performances. Matt reflects on his own marathon career, including a period where gaining roughly 3.5 kg coincided with slower marathon performances before intentionally losing around 4 kg and returning to consistent sub-2:20 racing. Matt explains the simple approach he has personally used - maintaining a modest calorie deficit on most days while prioritising high-volume, satiating foods, then aggressively increasing carbohydrate intake around important training. Rather than trying to remain perfectly fuelled every hour of every day, he discusses using roughly 12-hour windows before major sessions and races to maximise carbohydrate availability, followed by substantial refuelling afterwards. He also discusses why he avoids obsessing over daily scale weight, instead looking at longer-term trends and carbohydrate cycles. Matt believes intentional weight-loss phases should generally be relatively short - around 6 to 12 weeks for most athletes and rarely beyond 20 weeks - rather than becoming a permanent part of training. The conversation also tackles the stigma surrounding weight loss in endurance sport, RED-S, disordered eating and the potential danger of becoming obsessed with numbers. Matt stresses that this approach is only relevant to runners who genuinely have weight they can healthily lose and that improving performance should never come at the expense of long-term health. Later in the episode, Matt shares updates from the Chinese running shoe world, including upcoming laboratory testing of several Chinese super shoes and the rapid growth surrounding Dynafish. He discusses distribution delays, demand in China and plans for bringing more shoes into international markets. Matt also considers racing the Sydney Marathon in jeans and potentially attempting the marathon world record for running in jeans, before discussing his future racing ambitions, interest in trying HYROX and whether an Ironman is something he would ever consider. Finally, Matt explains why he has stopped frequent sauna sessions after noticing increasing fatigue and deteriorating training quality, despite initially introducing sauna as part of his marathon preparation. We've talked about the rise of masculinism in the past on Do You Really Know and today's subject is linked to the kind of traditional narratives that misogynistic men like to support. You know the type of views I mean: men are supposed to be strong, authoritative and physically imposing. Women, on the other hand, are expected to be gentle, compliant and ideally, not too independent. Since when do people choose their partners based on their exercise regime? New trailers and release dates are fun, but the real story is how culture moves when fandom, money, and social media collide. We kick things off with movie news like the Rick And Morty movie reportedly heading into development, a Betty Boop film idea that leans into creator pressure and commercialization, and a quick run of nostalgia drops and merch talk that somehow turns into a serious point about what audiences actually pay for. Then we hit TV and anime news hard: X-Men '97 hype, My Hero Academia updates, and a full Crunchyroll Awards winner rundown with real reactions, emotional moments, and the kind of debates you only have with someone who actually watches. Along the way we talk finales, backlash cycles, and why it's become “cool” online to hate the ending of everything, even when the work is solid. We pivot through sports with a shockingly short fight recap, then unload a stacked gaming news section: Summer Game Fest 2026 showcase season, Destiny 2 nearing the end of active development, platform strategy rumors, and big titles like Dragon Quest and a new James Bond game. We also touch tech headlines like Steam Deck pricing, new GPUs, and why Unreal Engine upgrades can squeeze both players and creators. As wine aficionados, Miroki and André are always asked what is their favourite wine? If you don't know André's, you may have been sleeping on previous Tasting Together episodes. Miroki, however, has often said her favourite depends on her mood...until you see how her eyes light up when Syrah is mentioned. When folks talk about Rhône wines, it's often in reference to Southern Rhône, with its very warm climate yielding wines of jammy and stewed fruit ripeness. Northern Rhône is made of different stuff. In this episode, I explain depersonalization and derealization—what they feel like, why they happen, and how many people experience emotional numbness, robotic sensations, and feeling detached from their body or surroundings. I also summarize research showing depersonalization as a protective response to extreme anxiety, the strong link with panic, and how internet catastrophizing and hyper-focus on symptoms make it worse. Then I offer clear, practical steps to break the cycle: surrender and reframe thoughts, shift attention outward through routines, exercise, mindfulness, journaling, consistent sleep/wake times, and treating depersonalization as harmless background noise so the brain can stop producing it. —My Anxiety Recovery Program— https://unpluganxiety.com/my-program/ —1 on 1 Coaching— https://unpluganxiety.com/1-on-1-coaching/ —My Website— https://unpluganxiety.com

Episode 11 looks at mental health anxiety and the common fear of going crazy, sometimes referred to as dementophobia. We explore the fear of losing your mind, or of anxiety becoming so intense that you might lose control. In this episode, I unpack where this fear comes from, why it is so common in anxiety disorders, and how the threat response and misinterpretation of sensations and thoughts keep it alive. The aim is to bring clarity and perspective to a fear that feels overwhelming but is widely misunderstood.

Discussing his new book, The Forensic View, Dr. Sharps explains the "continuity of the nervous system"—the biological fact that even trained first responders are vulnerable to the brain's natural stress responses. They discuss how trauma affects the prefrontal cortex, why memory errors during critical incidents are a matter of biology rather than competence, and how understanding these mechanisms can help officers navigate the stress of post-incident investigations.Key Topics Discussed:The Physiology of Stress: How adrenaline drains resources from the prefrontal cortex, literally changing how officers interpret reality during dangerous encounters. The Trauma of Scrutiny: How the stress of hostile interviews, media narratives, and repeated questioning can permanently rewrite an officer's memory of an event.Normalizing Perception Errors: Understanding that the brain naturally "fills in the blanks" (like mistaking a manatee for a mermaid or a phone for a gun) is a standard biological survival mechanism, not a sign of mental instability.Featured Book: The Forensic View: Investigative Psychology, Law Enforcement, Space Aliens, Exploration, and the Nature of Madness by Dr. Matthew Sharps. The government’s shut down, but Congress still cashes paychecks — and Mike’s had enough. From Democrats crying “extremism” while veterans can’t feed their kids, to senators dodging basic questions about getting paid, hypocrisy is on full display. Meanwhile, New York teeters on the edge as a radical Islamist socialist surges in the mayoral race, and the media obsesses over Trump’s new White House ballroom instead of real crises.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Are you tired, foggy, and just not feeling like yourself anymore? Maybe your workouts feel harder, your energy crashes mid-afternoon, or you can't seem to lose weight no matter what you do. You might assume it's stress, your thyroid, or just “getting older”—but these are often early signs of perimenopause and shifting hormone balance that quietly impact your energy, gut health, and mood years before your period ever stops. In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Mariza Snyder to break down what's really happening in your body during perimenopause—and why so many women are dismissed, misdiagnosed, or told it's “all in their head.” We talk about how fluctuating estrogen and progesterone can disrupt your metabolism, trigger fatigue, increase bloating and IBS symptoms, and even alter your brain chemistry, leading to anxiety, irritability, and brain fog. If you've been feeling off but can't pinpoint why, this conversation will help you connect the dots between your hormones, gut, and energy levels—and show you what real support looks like in this transition. What You'll Learn in This Episode • How to recognize the earliest signs of perimenopause before your cycle changes • The connection between hormone fluctuations, gut health, and brain fog • Why perimenopause is often mistaken for thyroid problems or depression • The truth about HRT—when to consider it and why you don't have to wait until menopause • Five simple, science-backed habits to stabilize your energy, mood, and metabolism You'll walk away understanding how to navigate this stage with confidence—knowing what's normal, what's not, and how to support your body naturally. If you've been feeling exhausted, moody, or just “off,” this episode is your guide to understanding what your hormones are trying to tell you—and how to restore balance from the inside out. Listen now to start feeling like yourself again.
