Today, on Notable Leaders' Radio, I speak with Amy Armstrong. Amy, a conflict resolution specialist, shares her incredible journey of overcoming fear, people-pleasing, and codependency. In today's episode, we discuss: Setting boundaries can be gentle yet firm. Knowing this encourages you to establish clear limits without feeling you must be harsh or confrontational, which can improve your relationships and overall well-being. Amy learned the importance of telling the truth and developing a personal identity at 45. This revelation reassures you that it's never too late to discover and embrace your true self, promoting lifelong personal growth. Fear often highlights areas for personal growth. By reframing fear as a tool for self-improvement, you can embark on personal growth rather than avoidance, empowering you to face challenges head-on. Amy emphasizes authenticity as the core of credibility and personal integrity. This encourages you to be true to yourself, fostering deeper and more genuine connections with others. Inviting others to share their perspectives promotes openness. This approach helps you build more inclusive and understanding relationships, enhancing communication and conflict resolution skills. Overcoming codependency and learning not to control life is crucial. This lesson encourages you to focus on self-awareness and authenticity, leading to healthier and more fulfilling relationships. Amy's "boundary blueprint" (VOICE) guides people in setting personal boundaries. This practical framework helps you establish effective boundaries, encouraging healthier interactions and greater self-respect. Amy has a new book "Reclaim Your Power to Resolve Conflict" coming next year. Anticipating this resource prepares you to enhance your boundary-setting skills and improve your ability to resolve conflicts.   RESOURCES: Complementary Resources: Free Conflict Quiz:  https://www.thecenterforfamilyresolution.com/  Guest Bio Amy Armstrong turns conflict into fuel for personal empowerment. Compromise is the Enemy of Curiosity: The Best Way to Resolve Conflict

When two or more people find themselves at the crossroads of a fundamental decision, the advice they are often given is to compromise.  But compromise doesn't actually lead to a solution that fulfills everyone. More often than not, it leaves both sides feeling like they got robbed, and it kills the connection necessary to come up with something better.  Good news - even in the most seemingly impossible choice, there is an option that honors everyone. Our “either/or” society doesn't teach us to look for it, so we're constantly working with limited creative possibilities when so much more is accessible.  When we bring curiosity into the space and lead with a willingness to resolve, that's when we access the many other options that serve everyone better.   How do we clear the emotional debris that makes it hard to access the creative possibilities? Why are so many people okay with small talk, even if it drains their aliveness?  In this episode, we talk about how to shift from either/or choices into conversations and solutions that truly honor and fulfill everyone.   Things You'll Learn In This Episode  -Deep wounds create defensiveness  When people have to navigate a fundamental difference, it's common to refuse to budge and come up with a better solution. Does this actually point to a deeply rooted wound that goes back to our formative years?  -The real reason people talk about the weather Small talk is so easy for some people, they can talk about nothing for hours. Why is it comfortable to some and irritating to others? What drives the need for small talk?  -The great power of a genuine conversation  Small talk doesn't nourish us in any way. How do we invite conversations that allow people to unleash their authenticity?

What's love got to do with it, as Tina Turner famously asked? Is there even a role for it in…the workplace? Turns out, yes, but let's be clear on what we mean by that! If you want to better resolve conflict, create inclusive cultures, and harmonize with upset customers to turn them into raving fans, this episode is for you!Today, Chloé Valdary and I have a delicious discussion about the three principles of the Theory of Enchantment and how they apply to your workplace. We talk about the first step you can take to express gratitude for both your strengths and weaknesses and how this opens you up to better interactions and more understanding. We discuss what love at work looks like, why it's not the same as romantic love, and how it creates a healthier, higher performing, and inclusive workplace. Chloé shares what prejudice actually means and how we can combat it to create better customer experiences and inclusive workplace cultures. Finally, we debunk the myth of the know-it-all leader or expert and why constant curiosity opens you up to more learning and better results. To access the episode transcript, please search for the episode title at www.TheEmpathyEdge.comKey Takeaways:We are not conditioned to share our struggles and weaknesses in the workplace. Breaking that paradigm and bringing our whole selves to work will allow all of us to grow and love.Ethically speaking, the word compassion means “with suffering.” You will experience suffering in life, but we want to enter the world in a way that doesn't harm us as we move through it.We cannot live life with no regrets. But we can have gratitude for the experiences we have had and the lessons we've learned. We change over time. Do the Who Am I practice every three days or so, so you can begin to recognize your patterns and your habits of mind. ""If we can remind people that they matter in every interaction that we engage in, whether it's in the business context or not, that makes an impression. That is the kind of transcendent experience that speaks to what I mean by the word ‘enchantment'." — Chloé Valdary Episode References:The DOJO community: enchanteddojo.comThe Tuning Fork community: enchantedtune.comThe Empathy Edge: Kristine Scott: How to Resolve Conflict with Angry Customers or ColleaguesFrom Our Partner:SparkEffect partners with organizations to unlock the full potential of their greatestasset: their people. According to a CPP global human capital study, 89% of employees let their conflicts with co-workers escalate. My guest today, Kristine Scott, is out to build a future where the energy of conflict gets harnessed to create pro-social change, not division.Kristine shares how she got into this work of coaching teams on how to resolve conflict and what she learned from young people on the street dealing with conflict effectively. We talk about why most of us prefer to avoid conflict and the false narrative we tell ourselves about our ability to emotionally connect. Kristine offers a 3-step formula for resolving conflict and gives examples of it in action. We also discuss how self-awareness and self-reflection are the keys to effectively handling conflict while also protecting your own mental health. To access the episode transcript, please click on the episode title at TheEmpathyEdge.comKey Takeaways:Most people prefer to avoid conflict because they think they're bad at it. We are more likely to remember the times we failed at conflict resolution, not the times we handled it successfully. If there's something that regularly gets under your skin, take a deeper look. Understand whether it is the action that is bothering you, or if it is what that action represents that is a trigger.Supervisors assume the conflict is repaired more often than it is, which can lead to performance issues and tension within the organization.Conflict often arises because people don't feel heard. You can't always solve the problem, but you can always listen with empathy and help them understand that they're heard."We all have our weak points about the things that really get under our skin, and we lose all objectivity. We can work on that old stuff. We can get support, do a little therapy, and come back to not be so reactive." — Kristine Scott Episode References:Jay Baer: How Empathy Gets Your Customers TalkingFrom Our Partner:Download the 2024 Ninth Annual State of Workplace Empathy study from Businessolver: businessolver.com/edgeDiscover more valuable content from Businessolver on The Benefits Pulse vodcast: businessolver.com/benefits-pulseAbout Kristine Scott, Chief Trainer, Seattle Conflict ResolutionKristine Scott is the founder and chief trainer for Seattle Conflict Resolution.
