In 1981, the UN established the International Day of Peace to commemorate and strengthen the ideals of peace. In a time when both the influence of multilateral institutions like the UN is being questioned, and the peace we need is in rapidly shortening supply as violence becomes the norm, my guest this week is doing amazing work with communities to find more peaceful paths through questions of conflict resolution by taking a systemic and complexity-informed approach. How we engage our young people in responding peacefully to the inevitable conflict they experience in their own lives feels like a critical part of what we do as educators, but so is being open to question the way in which violence and harm can also be normalised by the systems in which we live and work. Mt 18:15Few things in life cause more stress than unresolved conflict. It will elevate your blood pressure and consume your thoughts until you resolve it, so if you're wise, you will deal with it right away. Not all people feel this way. Even though Jesus commanded us to deal with it, many Christians refrain from saying anything for the sake of peace. Not so. Unresolved conflict will affect your peace of mind, your productivity, and your attitude toward others, so it must be dealt with. Additionally, the problem with refusing to face an issue is that it will probably occur again. So, according to an interpersonal communications adviser, do these three things: (1) "Ask God to give you His words to say so that His purpose will be achieved. 'My word...will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it' (Isa 55:11 NIV). (2) Empty your emotions out to God before engaging the offender. Emotions tend to get in the way of facts and can hinder objective thinking. This isn't as hard as it may sound once you decide you are going to make every effort to settle the issue in a harmonious way. 'If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone' (Ro 12:18 NIV). (3) Be clear as to what you perceive the problem to be. Avoid vague arguments that leave room for misinterpretation. For example, 'You need to do better' does not really clarify the problem." When two or more people find themselves at the crossroads of a fundamental decision, the advice they are often given is to compromise. But compromise doesn't actually lead to a solution that fulfills everyone. More often than not, it leaves both sides feeling like they got robbed, and it kills the connection necessary to come up with something better. Good news - even in the most seemingly impossible choice, there is an option that honors everyone. Our “either/or” society doesn't teach us to look for it, so we're constantly working with limited creative possibilities when so much more is accessible. When we bring curiosity into the space and lead with a willingness to resolve, that's when we access the many other options that serve everyone better. How do we clear the emotional debris that makes it hard to access the creative possibilities? Why are so many people okay with small talk, even if it drains their aliveness? In this episode, we talk about how to shift from either/or choices into conversations and solutions that truly honor and fulfill everyone.
