Between Worlds: How artist Julius Manapul Made Art Their Home

Julius Manapul transforms the pain of displacement into powerful art that challenges colonial structures and celebrates queer identity. As a Filipinx immigrant who arrived in Canada in the 90s, Manapul found themselves caught between languages and cultures—a displacement that led them to embrace visual communication as a universal language transcending verbal barriers.Manapul's multimedia practice spans sculpture, installation, performance, and experimental film, but perhaps most striking is their transformation of pornographic imagery into intricate butterfly patterns. These works initially attract viewers with their beauty before challenging them with the revelation of their source material. "It's fascinating how the work never changed," Manapul observes. "It's people's perspective that changed." This moment of realisation become a thread Manapul continually explores in their art and teaching practice as an Assistant Professor at OCAD University. Their most recent exhibition "Sila/Siya/Ako" (they, them, me in Tagalog) examines the connections between religion, colonisation in the Philippines and the racism experienced within queer spaces. Manapul juxtaposes Catholic symbolism with gay club music, highlighting how both institutions—ostensibly places of belonging—often alienate those who don't conform to dominant ideals. The exhibition's mannequins, adorned with replicas of King Philip's armour crafted from gay porn images and whitewashing products, confront viewers with the ongoing effects of colonisation in contemporary Filipino culture.Manapul shares career triumphs and how they overcame barriers coming up in Toronto's art scene. When traditional gallery spaces initially rejected Manapul's work, they strategically self-funded exhibitions and submitted to international calls—finding recognition in Europe before gaining traction in Canada. This resourcefulness reflects their powerful advice to emerging artists: "If there's no space for you at the table, make that space." Now an Assistant Professor at OCAD University, Manapul creates the representation they lacked growing up, proving that persistence and connection are essential tools for artistic success.Want to explore more transformative art that challenges cultural boundaries? Welcome back to ARTMATTERS: The Podcast for Artists. This week on ARTMATTERS, we get back to our conversation with Brooklyn-based artists Krista Louise Smith and Elliot Purse. Holding a BFA from OCAD University and an MFA from the New York Academy of Art, she has been awarded a New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) grant, the Ruth Katzman Prize, and is a three-time recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation for the Arts Grant. In August 2023, her practice was highlighted in Artnet News' “Up Next” by arts writer Katie White.Elliot Purse's art explores masculinity, cultural symbolism, and the body through charcoal and paint. As I slowly settle into 2023 — reflecting on the blur that was 2022 — I can't help but think about the complex problems (aka big messes!) we face at every turn: from increasingly devastating manifestations of the climate emergency, to the ubiquitous homelessness crisis, to the perplexing challenge of accessing a family physician in prosperous regions such as British Columbia, Canada. At the same time I am buoyed by the promise of Systems Thinking. Systems practices can take many forms and have the potential to inform — and guide us through — sensible, comprehensive and creative problem-solving. Here on this channel, we have explored some of the origins of systems and cybernetics by talking to knowledgeable experts from across the globe. Today's systems thinkers and practitioners are building upon a rich tradition, and are activating systems lineages in incredibly interesting ways. I've recently been drawn to works that highlight the application of systems — especially those with intriguing connections to other disciplines. The book that is the subject of this episode does just that by exploring the intersection of systems and design thinking. Design Journeys for Complex Systems: Practice Tools for Systemic Design (Bis Publishers, 2022) is a designer's handbook to learn systemic design tools to engage stakeholder groups in collaborative design to address complex societal systems. Authors Peter Jones and Kristel Van Ael describe how systemic design uses systems thinking and service design to address large-scale societal contexts and complex socio-technical systems. These are contexts characterized by social and technological complexity, high uncertainty, and often problematic outcomes. They describe the function of design as “system sensemaking” and using a tour guide metaphor, the book trains people's mindsets and provides tools for dealing with hyper complexity, to enable understanding of systemic problems, and to build capacity to collaborate in teams to produce action proposals. A little bit about the authors of Design Journeys for Complex Systems: Dr. Peter Jones teaches systemic design and health service design in the MDes programs at Toronto's OCAD University, is a co-founder of the Systemic Design Association. Kristel Van Ael is a business partner at Namahn, a humanity-centered design agency based in Brussels, and is lead author of the Service Design and Systemic Design toolkits. It was a pleasure to talk to Peter and Kristel. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did. Learn more about your ad choices. Alexander Manu is the author of many design thinking books, and is a lecturer at OCAD University, where I've also had the chance to lecture a few times. He was also the head of a big design studio called Axis for 25 years starting in 1980. Today Alexander is going to share some valuable knowledge on how inventors, startups, and small manufacturers should attempt to disrupt and capture an industry, all done by identifying, transitioning, and defining the category for yourself so that your product can be unbeatable. Today you will hear us talk about: The iPhone changed everything, but most people misunderstood what the iPhone really was. When you want to be competitive in hardware, you want to define the market yourself. Be courageous, trust your gut, think about the long term. You want to be the first, the best, or the only. Understand what it is You are not designing hardware, you are designing behavior enablers Is it inside out, or outside in. The first step in disruption is Transition You cannot judge disruptors by existing lenses, as it's new. Every product is a cultural transformation What is the nature of transformation Define the category for yourself As a hardware startup you need to overcome the natural industry baises Think far down the road, what will your disruption change in the future? Makes it very hard to compete (WD-40, Kleenex) When you disrupt, you need to unlearn. Always aspire to be the best, especially these days. Don't compromise on quality. Price is no longer an issue, both in the product, but also in the cost of designing it right. Trigger & Content Warning: Topics will include mentions of genocidal / sexual violence and child abuse (S6, EP 7) Cambodian human rights advocate leader Dany Pen joined me for this week's episode as we talk about her work to support survivors of violence. Her dad's side of the family were executed at the infamous Tuol Sleng Prison Center during the Khmer Rouge and after learning of her family's tragic fate there, Dany was compelled to go into human rights advocacy work and support survivors from Cambodia, to America, to Canada and currently in Bermuda where she resides. We spent time talking about how the petition that we were working on with members of the Cambodian and Cambodian diaspora brought a collective response and call-to-action on VICE News' controversial piece featuring a white photographer / artist who digitized the photos of civilian prisoners at Tuol Sleng without consent. Listen for more on this episode! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bio: Dany Pen is a Human Rights/Court Advocate, the Executive Director of Raleigh International Bermuda; and Founder of Women's A.C.T, an international advocacy group pushing for equality, justice, empowerment and support for survivors of sexual assault, violence and domestic abuse.
