“People seeing the beauty of this valley will want to stay, and their staying will be the undoing of the beauty.” ******************* Soundprint: Tri-M performance of "America The Beautiful," in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Recorded by Rae Solomon. "America the Beautiful” was actually inspired by Colorado Springs. It started out as a poem titled, “Pike’s Peak.” For many, it’s a patriotic favorite. But to others, it can be a reminder that the America we know has been many different things to many different people...and not all of them inspiring. This episode’s story features an historical mystery brought to you by producer Paul Karolyi. This is “Left Hand, Left Out.” ******************* The Range & Slope Collective is Paul Karolyi, Matthew Simonson, and Rae Solomon. Special thanks to Jeremy Zornow and J.D. Lopez. The music you heard in this episode was by Blue Dot Sessions and Fred Mosqueda and his brothers. ******************* Range & Slope is an audio journey through Colorado. Yara is a young tax attorney in Northern Colorado, a mother of two little boys under the age of 4. As if her career and family didn't keep her busy enough, now she's decided to throw her hat into the ring for a seat in the state legislature in a district she's unlikely to win. She says she's doing it for her kids. But maybe she's also doing for herself.

Soundprint: The National Western Stock Show Parade. Recorded by Megan Arellano. With every episode we make, we hear a lot of amazing things. And we don’t always have a way to include them in our episodes. So, we thought we’d share some of that old tape that’s been sitting in the archives, gathering dust. Instead of one big story, we have three shorter stories. And we’ll also talk a little bit about our process. It’s also a little taste of the type of extra material you’ll get if you become a patron. ******************* The Range & Slope Collective is Paul Karolyi, Matthew Simonson, and Rae Solomon. Soundprint: The Sit 'n' Bull Saloon on Christmas Day. Recorded by Rae Solomon. For us here at Range & Slope HQ, it’s been a year of exploration and discovery. Since we launched the show in July, each of the three of us has produced two stories. Rae gave us a look inside Denver’s tiny home village and local journalism crisis. I found my way to the edge of a nuclear-reactor sized hole and talked A LOT about regional pizza styles. Back in September, Matthew told us a story about a man and a sporting goods sale. And now he’s back with something completely different. This time on the show, he brings us a story that took him on a journey to the far reaches of the state. This is "Collecting in Good Faith." ******************* The Range & Slope Collective is Paul Karolyi, Matthew Simonson, and Rae Solomon. Soundprint: DMV, Tremont Branch. Recorded by Rae Solomon. For many thrifty Coloradans, Labor Day used to be more than just an excuse to take off work. It was the shopping event of the year. Starting in 1954, and for many Labor Day weekends thereafter, the Gart Brothers would throw open their doors and welcome customers with discounted prices on outdoor apparel and winter sporting goods. Range and Slope’s Matthew Simonson brings us a story of fathers, family, and bargains spelled backwards. This is Cash Gart: The Songs of Sniagrab. ******************* The Range & Slope Collective is Paul Karolyi, Josh Mattison, Matthew Simonson, and Rae Solomon. More poetry for the edge of the big hole:  “I met a traveller from an antique land, Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand, Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed; And on the pedestal, these words appear: My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings; Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair! Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away.”   Story by Paul Karolyi Soundprint recorded by Rae Solomon Music by Blue Dot Sessions Additional support from the rest of the Range & Slope Collective “Holy Shit We’re Fucked Blues” by Jesse Wooten.
