In this episode, host Kyle Younker sits down with Liam Weld, Head of Data Centers at Meter, to explore how AI is reshaping the modern data center from the inside out. While data centers are often discussed in terms of land and power, Weld explains why networking has become one of the most critical—yet underappreciated—drivers of performance and cost in AI facilities. The conversation unpacks the shift from traditional north–south traffic to east–west traffic between GPUs, why AI clusters now function more like a single massive computer, and how latency, reliability, and cabling can directly impact model performance. Weld also details Meter's vertically integrated approach to networking, spanning hardware, software, installation, and operations, and how this enables automation and long-term efficiency. BLAIR SCHULMAN- On May 1, Midwest Agenda celebrates its fifth anniversary, marking five consecutive years of daily coverage dedicated to documenting contemporary art across the American Midwest. Founded in 2021 by critic, writer, and speaker Blair Schulman, Midwest Agenda is anindependent, free, and publicly accessible platform documenting regional cultural activity. Through artist features, exhibition announcements, critical commentary, and reporting, it amplifies artists and institutions often overlooked by national art media. Over five years, the project has documented thousands of exhibitions and events across twelve states, creating one of the most consistent public archives of Midwestern art. Midwest Agenda's coverage has tracked key developments impacting artists and communities, including shifts in public arts funding, debates around public art and civic space, the role of artificial intelligence in creative practice, political impact on the arts and the increasing influence of artist-led initiatives. Its social media platforms extend this work through direct, public-facing critiques of how current events shape artistic production and cultural conditions across the Midwest. The anniversary underscores several conclusions drawn from the archive: • Independent, decentralized media platforms are essential to documenting contemporary art ecosystems where visibility remains a barrier • Art in the Midwest is deeply connected to civic, political, and community life As Midwest Agenda enters its sixth year, it continues its commitment to daily publication and long-term documentation, reinforcing its role as both a news source and a living archive of the region's cultural landscape. Jackson Williams is building large-scale steel sculptures with handmade bending tools, a MIG welder, and a small corner of a shared shop.If you're a welder thinking about getting into metal art, starting small, or building something original without buying a shop full of equipment, this episode will show you what actually matters.• Learn how Jackson builds full-size animal sculptures from half-inch round bar using mostly hand bending and simple jigs • See how he scales reference images on the floor to lay out a framework before skinning a sculpture with rod • Understand why shared shop space can be a smarter move than trying to outfit your own shop from scratch • Hear how posting his work online and saying yes to Fabtech helped create momentum and new opportunities • Take away Jackson's best advice for beginners: start small, play around, and fix anything that is not rightJackson Williams is a steel sculptor based in Asheville, building wildlife and figure sculptures from round bar with a style that emphasizes motion, anatomy, and flow. He developed his craft working alongside his father, sculptor Chris Williams, before carving out his own direction in steel rod sculpture. Not sure what to do with your one precious existence? Good news from the true-life adventures of Vibeke Saugestad: You don't have to pick one thing. Best known as a power-pop singer-songwriter, Vibeke is also an accomplished literary translator, multi-instrumentalist, puppet-maker and ventriloquist. "I don't stand still for long," she says in our interview. Vibeke's music career started in the early 90s when she was the teenage frontwoman for Weld and other bands. She kept making music for the next 35 years in various groups ranging from the mellow, loungy Thinkerbell to her most recent combo, the hard-driving Vibeke Saugestad Band, featuring an all-star group of Beacon-based musicians. Another local project, The Wynotte Sisters, pairs Vibeke with Sara Milonovich and Daria Grace (both former Beaconites guests). Outside of her music, Vibeke has built a career as a translator, creating Norwegian versions of English language books, including "Johnny Cash: The Life" by Robert Hillburn and Booker prize-winner "The Sellout" by Paul Beatty. It doesn't stop there. During the pandemic, Vibeke took up ventriloquism and created Punguin, a conceited but adorable animal who spreads joy on Instagram at @the-punguin. (Penguin appears in this interview.) For more episodes and community updates, visit Beaconites.com or contact Zach at zach@beaconites.com. Photo credit: Ken Fox

Also ned ausschlieslich des, wassder vo mir erwardd dud. Also meggern. Eichndlich will ich euch verzähl, dass dess für mich alles immer mehr a fremde Weld wird. Also werbål, awer ehm ned blos. Desweechn fang ich edz amål mid denne Neolochismen a. Also als erschdes Beischbiel. Mei fränggischs Owerschdüble is desweeng in derre ledzdn Zeid ganz schö neis schwitzn komm. Awer eds, wos rum iss, kann ich mei neu erlerndes Wissn mid euch deil. Jede Menge neue Wörder habb ich glerrnd. Also echd, ich hald mich ja eichndlich für relladief elogwend. Mid an zimmlich grousn Wordschadz. Drodzdem hädd ich bald a Wörderbuch brauchd. Des wird dann ah gern a weng "ssbeissie", also seggsuell aufglådn. "Häit du Laff" kann a innerer "Forsd Broggsimmidie" vorkomm. Also wenn Leud unner Zwang beinanner sin. Früher hammer des geechn n Willn verheierd gnannd und dass dess scho alles gud werrn wirrd war des dumme Gschmarri vo derre Mudder, der wos früher genauso ganggn is, wo des also eichndlich hädd besser wiss müss. Gsåchd haddse dess aus sonerer Ård fadalisdischer Schigglichkeidshörichkeid. War a schönner Scheiß, wo mir in meiner Generazion eichndlich froh drüwer wårn, dassmer die Zeidn üwerwunne hamm. Heud isses irchndwie seggsie und anscheinend so was wie a verloggende Fandasie. Na ja, wie auch immer. Ich habs verschdanne. "Ennemies to Laffers" is üwrichns im Brinnzibb des gleiche. Also glebb ich. Awer es is nedd immer so bös. Ab und an isses a "kosie" also liebenswerd und innerer Wohlfühlwelld. Oder des ganze is enne "Romm Komm", also a rommandische Kommödie. "Grammbie x grammbie" oder "grammbie sannschein" is nacherd Gschmaggsach. Gibbds a als "Hie foll harrder", also nedd bloos zuerschd, sondern a noch heffdich, beziehungsweise heffdicher. Des nennd mer nacherd "obsessd", also sozmsåch besessen oder zumindessd bruddål fogussierd. Neben den grimminellen Oarschlöchern und feindlichen Desboodn gibbds awer a Hoggeischbieler, Feuerwehrleud, Subberstaars, oder a Leud ausm Hochådl, also "Roiels". "Bewechende Übsilon A Sdorrie", also für junge Erwaxene. Wobei ich mich an derre Schdelle a fraach, wie jung die sein dürffn mid denne bornografischn Inhåldn und gleichzeidich, wie lang mer a junger Erwaxener iss? Dabei fallen denne Werbedexdern Deemen wie "Mendll Hells", "Embauermennd" als Werbeslougen ein. Also ich du mir da in dem Zusammenhang schwer. Was mir auf jedn Fall gloar is, is dass der fast schon putzig anmudende Versuch, einiger konserfadieferer Verlåche, dess ganze serjös zum verbagg, denne hibbn Formulierungen nedd schdaddhald kå. "Ssbeissie Enimies tu Laffers" is eefach vielsåchnder, wie "Zeitgenössische Liebesromane" und ich glebb, dass dess in a boar Jährli a kenner mehr verschdeh wird. Damidd lass ich dess mid denne Neologismen für heud a gud sei. Kommmer amål zur zugegebenermåsn obulendn Obdig. Awer dummerweise hald immer der selbe Schdiel. Nacherd is dess edz obdisch middlerweile ehrlich gsaachd a a Einheidsbrei. Braggdisch is des für mich a enns vo denne Broblemmli. Also bei Dobb Diddln. Dasses hald keinerlei Differnzierung geb dud, is des Brobleem. Heyne had zum Beischbiel a boar echd schönne Glassiger, wo edz a in derre Form rauskomm dun. Weils nacherd besser gling dud? A wenns deudsche Audorinnen sinn? Wennse kä Kadz hamm, nacherd wird weniggsdns a endschbrechnder Bseudonüm gewähld. "Kazi". A noch a schönnes Schdichword. Bseudonüm gibbds nämmlich a a boar drolliche. Meisdenz a english. Und immer schbrechend. Sozumsåch gehm die scho enn Vorgeschmagg off dess, was kommd. HC Dolores. Mei romanische Gundbildung is nämmlich a ned schlechd. Dolor, doloris: der Schmerz. Die lebbd üwrichns miderre eeaachichn Kadz unnem Kordschi zamm, also demm Lieblingshund vo derre Gwien. Ach ja, was mer nedd vergess dürf. Alle mideinand sinn immer und ausschließlich Besdseller Audorinnen. Schbiegel, Niu Jork Daims und was wäss ich. Also zusädslich dazu, dasse Diggdogg Sensäischäischens sin. A wemmer in genau dem Fall vielleichd doch üwern weng glangvolleren Bseudonüm nachdengg solld... Gehd ja. Zum Beischbiel Frau Scharlodde Robinson. Da is eichndlich scho gloar, was die schreim wird. Kim Stänli Robinson könnds Vorbild sei. Also Mars. Robinsonade. Also Ändi Wier. Marsianer. Vielleichd a kindische Drodzaggzion, wo mir eichndlich zum dengg geb solld. Gloar isses mir bewussd, dass des a dumme Drodzreagzion is. Doch! Weil alle Schbassbremsn zur Urne gangn sinn. Herr Eibach Graddulazion Herr Frankenberger vo derre ÖDeBe! Herr Eibach! Alles Eiferer! Herr Eibach!!!
In this special episode of Weld Wednesdays with AWS, recorded live at the Inspection Expo & Conference in Austin, Texas, Jason Becker sits down with longtime AWS volunteer and industry veteran Bill Komlos for an in-depth conversation on volunteering on AWS code committees. While most welders, inspectors, and fabricators rely on AWS codes every day, few understand how those standards are actually developed. Bill shares his journey from local AWS section involvement to national technical committees, explaining how volunteers from across the industry—inspectors, fabricators, engineers, and educators—collectively shape the codes that govern welding worldwide. This episode covers why committee participation is open to the public, how involvement can accelerate your career, and why real-world shop experience is essential to keeping codes practical, relevant, and safe. Jason and Bill also discuss mentorship, networking, the value of diverse perspectives, and why the next generation of welders and inspectors is critical to the future of AWS standards. If you've ever complained about a code requirement—or wondered how to get involved in shaping them—this episode is for you. For more information on how you can get involved with the AWS Click Here

In this episode of Bigfoot Society, firsthand witnesses from across North America finally share what they experienced — often in places Bigfoot researchers know all too well. From a violent nighttime incident at a remote Montana campground, to a massive figure crossing a road near Weld, Maine, to daylight activity along Highway 7 near Morton and Mineral, Washington, these encounters didn't happen in stories — they happened in real places.Listeners will hear accounts tied to the Appalachian Trail near Dudleytown, Connecticut, the forests of northern Minnesota, the White Mountains and Mogollon Rim of Arizona, ranch land in British Columbia, and even an Interstate 90 rest stop in Washington — locations where witnesses never expected to come face-to-face with something they couldn't explain.Hunters, campers, loggers, ranchers, and truck drivers describe moments of silence, fear, movement, and presence — sometimes lasting only seconds, sometimes stretching through the night. No theories pushed. No conclusions forced.Just firsthand testimony, shared carefully and honestly.Listen to the full episode — every voice matters, and the pattern only emerges when you hear them all.
In the first Weld Wednesdays with AWS episode of 2026, I'm sitting down with Dr. Josh Burgess, current President of the American Welding Society and Senior Program Manager for Metallurgical and Welding Engineering at the Tennessee Valley Authority. Dr. Burgess shares his path from welding in high school and competing at the national level to earning his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in materials science and engineering. Along the way, AWS played a pivotal role—providing scholarships, networking opportunities, mentorship, and leadership development that shaped his career. This conversation covers: How AWS membership opens doors at every career stage The value of section involvement and industry networking Leadership development through volunteering Welding metallurgy, inspection, and failure analysis Workforce development and future career paths in welding Emerging technology like additive manufacturing and automation Whether you're a student, working welder, inspector, educator, or industry leader, this episode highlights why welding remains one of the most versatile and opportunity-rich trades available today. In this episode of Weld Wednesday with AWS, I sit down with Andrew Brown, host of The Lost Art of Skilled Trades Podcast, live from FABTECH 2025 in Chicago. Andrew and I dig into the real numbers behind the Skilled Trades shortage — including the projected need for over 320,000 welders by 2029 and the retirement wave that could pull more than 157,000 welders out of the industry in the next decade. I share how I first discovered the workforce gap when I moved into teaching, and Andrew breaks down why so many companies are struggling to connect with Gen Z. We talk about wage issues, soft skills, entry-level expectations, and why companies can't just post an ad and expect welders to line up anymore. We also get into a topic that both of us feel strongly about: mentorship vs. gatekeeping. I talk openly about my own early struggles finding someone willing to teach me, and Andrew explains why passing knowledge down is critical if we want the next generation to succeed. We wrap up with a discussion on automation, co-bots, and why welders, pipefitters, ironworkers, and aerospace fabricators continue to be irreplaceable in a world that's becoming more digital every year. If you care about the future of the welding workforce, this is an important conversation. To get involved with AWS click here

Welcome back to All One Song: A Neil Young Podcast. We're spending the summer talking to some great musicians and writers about their one favorite Neil Young song. Or at least one of their favorite songs. Last week, our guest was Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth — and of course, the conversation went deep into Steve's memories of Sonic Youth's tour with Neil and Crazy Horse in 1991, when both bands were bringing incredible waves of feedback to the masses across North America. An exciting time! For Neil, the tour resulted in a fairly traditional live album, the classic double-disc Weld. But that wasn't all. Inspired partly by what he heard Sonic Youth doing, Young also put together Arc, one of — if not the — most avant-garde pieces of music Young has ever created. Basically, it's a 35-minute noise collage consisting of the elongated and improvised endings of various songs that he and the Horse played in early 91. It's the sound of amplifiers pushed to their limits, of things falling apart in ragged, glorious fashion. It's an expressway to yr skull, as Sonic Youth put it. Here this week to examine the mysteries and magic of Arc is Ilyas Ahmed. The Portland, OR-based musician has been making consistently fascinating music for well over two decades now, whether all on his own or in close collaboration with fellow travelers like Grouper, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, Golden Retriever, Dania Shihab and many more. He also serves as guitarist in Grails, an awesomely uncategorizable collective that just put out one of the 2025's best records — the appropriately named Miracle Music. No matter what Ilyas does, it's always infused with a sense of curiosity, adventure and imagination. Our conversation about Arc goes in a bunch of different directions — it's a rich text, as the academics like to say. So let's get into it … Looking for a digital music platform that feels more like a record shop? THE COLORADO GOP IS ABOUT TO COMMIT SUICIDE FOR THE PARTY Word on the street is that Herr Dave Williams, called here Baghdad Bob by Dick Wadhams in a column, has the votes to opt out of the primary system in Colorado. He's kicked out anyone who dares to disagree with him (did you know Lauren Boebert is now a RINO?) on the Central Committee and just threw out a bunch of Weld voters who would have voted no on the stupid plan. This means we could face a situation where FOUR members of Congress, where President Trump barely has a majority, could NOT be chosen at the state assembly. They weren't last time, you remember Williams and his collection of morons endorsed a bunch of other losers, including Williams, who got his butt kicked. This means we could lose control of the House when Williams nominates himself, Ron Hanks, Janek Joshi and someone other than Lauren Boebert to run. I'm gonna get Dick on the show to discuss asap.
