The Trump administration's agenda has become unmistakable: attack the living legacy of the Civil Rights Revolution – both by trying to erase the historical memory of it, and by reversing the expansion of democracy that it won. Why are Trump and his billionaire backers so threatened by this legacy? What lessons does it have for us today? How does social change happen? This episode is built around a class on this topic, taught by our host Brian Becker, part of a class series at The People's Forum in New York City titled: 'Hidden Histories of Rebellion in the United States', recorded on January 27th. We've added supplemental audio clips and edited it for this podcast format. This is a preview of a patrons-only episode. Michael Bishop grew up surrounded by emotional trauma, bullying, homelessness, and instability, moving in and out of the foster care system while dealing with serious issues at home. Fighting became a way to survive, and that anger eventually led to him being locked inside Massachusetts juvenile detention centers for nearly two years. In this episode, Michael shares a firsthand account of life inside youth detention, including physical abuse by guards and the long-term impact of being punished instead of protected. This conversation exposes the harsh realities of the juvenile justice system and how a broken upbringing and systemic failures shaped the course of his life. _____________________________________________ #JuvenileDetention #PrisonStories #JusticeSystem #SurvivorStory #TrueCrimePodcast #Massachusetts #LifeBehindBars #lockedin _____________________________________________ Thank you to PRIZEPICKS & GOLD DROP SELTZERS for sponsoring this episode: PRIZEPICKS: Visit https://prizepicks.onelink.me/LME0/IANBICK and use code IANBICK and get $50 in lineups when you play your first $5 lineup! _____________________________________________ GOLD DROP: Head to https://www.thedryoak.com/ and use promo code LOCKEDIN at checkout for 10% off your order. _____________________________________________ Hosted, Executive Produced & Edited By Ian Bick: https://www.instagram.com/ian_bick/?hl=en https://ianbick.com/ _____________________________________________ Shop Locked In Merch: http://www.ianbick.com/shop _____________________________________________ Timestamps: 00:00 Brutal Beginnings Inside Juvenile Detention 00:40 Childhood Trauma, Homelessness & Foster Care 01:05 Meet Mike: His Story Begins 02:24 Growing Up With Instability & Family Struggles 05:04 Homelessness, Loss & a Broken Family System 08:26 Bullying, New Schools & Feeling Like an Outsider 13:13 Gifted Programs, Mental Health & Acting Out 16:32 Rebellion, Police Encounters & the CHINS Program 23:00 School Fights, Suspensions & Falling Behind 27:27 DSS Group Homes & Foster Care 33:02 Foster Homes, School Incidents & Authority Clashes 40:54 Probation, Drug Tests & Escalating Legal Trouble 46:26 Alternative School, Metal Detectors & Physical Restraints 53:46 Probation Chaos, Failed Drug Tests & Court Dates 56:14 Sentenced to Juvenile Detention 01:01:14 Intake & Assessment Unit: Fear, Isolation & First Restraints 01:11:51 Westborough Secure Unit: Abuse, Trauma & Turning 18 01:20:05 Staff Abuse, Manipulation & Surviving the System 01:31:01 Developing Narcolepsy While Locked Up 01:39:27 Violence, Corruption & Hard Lessons Learned 01:46:03 Other Kids' Stories: System Failure on Repeat 01:53:37 The Final Straw: Restraint, Investigation & Consequences 02:02:02 Transferred to a New Facility: A Glimmer of Hope 02:08:11 Release From Juvie, Recovery & Life After Lockup 02:13:29 Mental Health, Healing & Breaking the Cycle 02:16:49 Final Thoughts: Advice for At-Risk Youth Learn more about your ad choices. We tend to read the story of the Israelites making the golden calf and ask, “How could they?” But we fail to realize that what the Israelites were guilty of, idolatry, is the very thing that is behind all of our other sins. Today, Pastor J.D. shows us not only the danger of idolatry in our lives, but how we can escape it. Ultimately, what is bad news for those who reject Christ is actually good news for those who follow him: You become like what you worship.

What if food were treated as care, not convenience? In this episode of The Caring Economy, we sit down with Laura Pensiero, a registered dietitian, chef, and leading voice in the Food Is Medicine movement, to unpack how nutrition quietly shapes nearly every outcome we care about, from long-term health to workplace resilience to healthcare costs.Laura shares her journey from the Hudson Valley to professional kitchens to collaborating with physicians at Memorial Sloan Kettering, where she helped translate clinical research into practical, everyday nourishment. We explore why dietary patterns like the Mediterranean diet continue to outperform trends, what precision and personalized nutrition could unlock next, and why food remains one of the most underutilized tools in modern healthcare. At a moment when health systems are strained, burnout is widespread, and prevention is finally entering the policy conversation, this episode asks a deeper question: what would it look like to build a system that supports care before crisis? This conversation is about food, but it's also about leadership, systems, and rethinking what we value in a caring economy.

The Letter of Jude E4 — In verses 5-7, Jude warns a Jewish Messianic community about a group of people in their midst who live without moral restraint and reject Jesus' authority. After comparing them to a series of human and angelic rebels in the Hebrew Bible, Jude then calls out the corrupt church members in verses 8-10 as ones who “slander the glorious-ones,” referring to angels. What is Jude talking about, and why would slandering spiritual beings be considered offensive? In this episode, Jon and Tim explore the Hebrew Bible and Second-Temple period apocryphal literature to understand the unique role and revered status of angels among 1st-century Jewish people.FULL SHOW NOTESFor chapter-by-chapter summaries, referenced Scriptures, and reflection questions, check out the full show notes for this episode.CHAPTERSRecap of Introduction and Setup for Verses 8-10 (0:00-10:21)Angels in the Hebrew Bible and Second-Temple Literature (10:21-39:02)Michael the Archangel's Restraint (39:02-1:06:12)OFFICIAL EPISODE TRANSCRIPTView this episode's official transcript.BIBLEPROJECT JUDE TRANSLATIONView our full translation of the Letter of Jude.REFERENCED RESOURCESGod and Spiritual Beings Podcast SeriesCheck out Tim's extensive collection of recommended books.SHOW MUSIC“Chillbop ft. Send us a textListen to my new podcast: https://therenewedmindpodcast.buzzsprout.comToday, we step into one of the great turning points in the entire story of David — a moment when the kingdom shakes, loyalties shift, and the consequences of years of unresolved pain finally erupt into out-and-out rebellion. If chapter 14 felt tense, chapter 15 feels explosive. This is the chapter where the unthinkable happens:David is forced to flee his own family and city because his own son has stolen the hearts of the people. It is heartbreaking. It is shocking, and it is deeply human. This chapter is more than a history lesson because I believe it is meant to warn us about what happens when ambition replaces humility, when image replaces integrity, when bitterness replaces reconciliation, and when leadership is tested when it is most vulnerable. So, let's step into another gripping chapter in the life of David — a chapter where the king is on the run, the kingdom is in crisis, and God is quietly at work behind the scenes.Welcome to the episode.Land Development Conversations with Developers, Builders, and Industry LeadersReal conversations from the development world.Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the showFollow and Support All my Creative endeavours on Patreon. For our "Sunday Context" series, we build on this past week's coversation about the Battle of New Orleans with a look at the largest slave rebellion in US history, led by Charles Deslondes, which took place just outside of New Orleans in 1811. Like the story of the War of 1812, this involved the mix of ethnic, political, and cultural forces that only New Orleans has -- and highlights the way in which the future of slavery would become the defining issue of the era.Join our America250 newsletter community! Hey Regular Guys and Gals, we did it again and made it through another week! This week, Kev takes a look at how punk rock used to mean rage… but now? Maybe kindness is the real rebellion. A reflection on how Iggy Pop went from chaos to calm, and why Superman (not Batman) might actually be the hero we need right now. How real success isn't found in likes or headlines, but in Target pretzels, your dad's corner store coffee, and creating something that makes people feel less alone. Why detaching from outcomes often brings better ones, and how letting the old way die sometimes makes space for the truer path. RGF bonus: Dustin Hoffman on what real success actually looks like, Larry Bird's beer-fridge dream, ‘Kev On the Scene' with Karamo Brown skipping the press tour, Bowie's Heroes, and how you can be one too… just for one day! The Letter of Jude E3 — After the letter's opening appeal, Jude (or Judah) begins warning corrupt members of a Jewish messianic church community who cast off restraint and live openly immoral lives. He does so with an ancient rhetorical technique found in both the Hebrew Bible and the Dead Sea Scrolls. Jude shares three stories of rebellion in the Hebrew Bible: the spies fearful of the promised land in Numbers 13-14, the “sons of God” in Genesis 6, and the inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis 19. Then he draws comparisons to the corrupt church members, promising they'll receive the same judgment. Why does Jude write this way about the moral crisis in a church? What is he trying to communicate? In this episode, Jon and Tim explore verses 5-8, unpacking the dense biblical references and what they would have meant to Jude and his audience.FULL SHOW NOTESFor chapter-by-chapter summaries, referenced Scriptures, and reflection questions, check out the full show notes for this episode.CHAPTERSA Jewish Rhetorical Technique (0:00-18:10)Rebellion of the Spies, Sons of God, and Sodom and Gomorrah (18:10-36:41)Concluding Thoughts on the First Triad (36:41-51:54)OFFICIAL EPISODE TRANSCRIPTView this episode's official transcript.BIBLEPROJECT JUDE TRANSLATIONView our full translation of the Letter of Jude.REFERENCED RESOURCESThe Dead Sea Scrolls (Pesharim)Check out Tim's extensive collection of recommended books.SHOW MUSIC“Fellowship” by Lofi Sunday, Cassidy Godwin“Peace With You ft. Rebellion and Theater in MinnesotaThe dialogue turns to the rebellious American province of Minnesota, where local authorities and National Guard forces reportedly confront federal Department of Homeland Security agents over immigration enforcement in suburban streets. Gaius expresses alarm at combat-ready troops appearing in peaceful neighborhoods, while Germanicus identifies these confrontations as symptoms of potential civil war, drawing parallels to the radicalization that preceded the French and Spanish Civil Wars when ideological factions manufactured crises to justify violence. They dissect what Germanicus terms the "theater" of modern political conflict, wherein the Left imitates revolutionary Jacobins while the Right grows increasingly militant, both sides driving the nation toward artificial confrontation that serves partisan interests rather than public good. Germanicus notes the bitter irony of the Governor—referred to variously as Wallace or Waltz—who previously deployed what critics called "stormtroopers" during the plague years to enforce compliance, now mobilizing those same forces against the central government he once served. The debaters conclude that while much of this represents performative "authoritarian theater" designed for political consumption rather than genuine rebellion, such staged conflicts carry the grave risk of spiraling into authentic fratricidal violence and the catastrophic breakdown of imperial order that doomed previous republics.1902
THE PERSONAL RULE OF CHARLES I AND THE SLIDE TOWARD REBELLION Colleague Jonathan Healey. Tensions rise as lawyer Edward Coke champions the Petition of Right against Charles I's arbitrary imprisonment and taxation. After the Duke of Buckingham is assassinated by a disillusioned soldier, Charles dissolves Parliament in 1629, beginning a decade of "personal rule." He levies controversial taxes like "ship money," which judges uphold, fearing the public. Religious rigidness led by Archbishop Laud and the ruthless administration of the Earl of Strafford alienate the populace. Charles's attempt to impose a new prayer book on Scotland triggers a rebellion, causing his control over England to collapse. NUMBER 31680 CHARLES II
