Have you ever felt unheard in a conversation?  Or wondered why society seems more divided than ever? Historian and podcast host Ramona Houston joins us to reveal how radical listening can bridge cultural divides, resolve conflicts, and reshape history. Ramona Houston is a U.S. historian specializing in African American and Mexican American history.  As we celebrate Black History Month, Ramona shares her insights on the power of listening and its impact on understanding history and resolving conflicts. In this episode, she highlights the significance of radical listening—truly hearing what others say and what remains unspoken. Ramona discusses how listening can transform relationships, whether personal or professional, and how it plays a crucial role in addressing societal challenges. Through her experiences, Ramona emphasizes the importance of recognizing often-overlooked contributions to history, particularly from women and marginalized communities. By listening to diverse voices, we can reshape our understanding of history and foster a more inclusive narrative. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a leader seeking to improve communication, or someone passionate about social change, this conversation will inspire you to embrace the art of listening and its potential to create positive change. "In the U.S., we have Black History Month, Women's History Month, AAPI Heritage Month, and Hispanic Heritage Month—times dedicated to recognizing how different groups have contributed to American history.  This is important because if you read American history books, you'll see how many groups have been marginalized.  As historians, we work toward a future where these histories are included in all books and in all ways—not just separated out. History changes when we start adding different groups of people.”- Ramona Houston   SUPERPOWER Notes: 00:01 – The Importance of Inclusive History. Jill Atogwe is a wife, mom of 4, writer, and author of a brand new children's book, “Left Out: Believing My Story is for God's Glory”. She is passionate about encouraging others with the truth of the goodness and wisdom of God's plan - even when it doesn't look like we want it to. Our prayer is that you would come away from this episode deeply encouraged and better equipped to walk the path of your own unique and challenging life story. What We Chat About on This Episode:~Jill's new children's book, Left Out, what led her to write it, and what readers can expect~The things we feel like God left out when He made us and how that part of our story is for our good and His glory~The reality that this book is for our hearts as adults just as much as it is for kids; how its message ministered to my own heart personally on a difficult path I am walking myself ~How Jill has come to discover for herself that what God left out is part of her story, for her good, and God's glory; how she has helped her kids understand this truth for themselves~How Jill has helped her kids to embrace their own uniqueness and differences~Jill's advice for parents who want to know how to foster a positive self-image and confidence in their kids ~Teaching kids to be noticers ~Getting our kids to think for themselves ~Helping parents to understand how they can address more sensitive topics with their kids in a way that is inclusive and respectful ~Training our kids to be both curious and kind~How to help kids who are dealing with anxiety; Jill's own experience with OCD~The power of memorizing Scripture with our kids~Choosing our kids and their wellbeing, even when it's hard and exhausting~Understanding that if God left something out of our story, that thing He left out would not have been good for us (even if it's something we really wanted!)~Delighting in the Lord and not in what we think we want ~Being encouraged during hard times of trial by heroes of the faith ~What Jill has learned from hard trials she has gone through and trials she has watched loved ones experience ~Comforting others with the comfort we have received ~The good that comes from trials ~Learning alongside our kids ~And more!Inspiring Quotes to Remember:“The things we feel were left out when God made us are the things that can make us feel left out as we grow. And the heart of the book is that what God left out is part of our story - it's all for our good and all for His glory.”“It's a blessing for us to be different, not just us set apart singularly, but for all of us from one another, that God is so creative that He made so many different things happen to serve a purpose. It would be so boring if we were all exactly alike.”“When stuck in fear and anxiety, it can be so helpful to expose our children to the Word daily, to have special hymns to go through together that are comforting, and to read stories of a real God who created us in a special way and did not make any mistakes. This is how we help our kids and ourselves to learn to trust Him.” “We can look back on our life and see big capital T Trials and moments of deep struggle and see how God transformed us through them and used those moments for His glory. So when I'm in the thick of it, that is what I look to. I also look to heroes of the faith and to people in the Word like Paul and David. I look to people who have gone before me and am encouraged and comforted by their examples.”“This won't be forever. The brokenness of this world and the brokenness of our bodies is not forever. But while we are here, we need to be honest with our friends and loved ones so we can all walk in this together and be lifted up by those around us, trusting that the Lord will comfort us in our time of need so that we can comfort others.” “Psalm 119:17 stands out to me, where the Psalmist says it is good for him to be afflicted so that he might learn God's decrees. He goes on to say that the law from God's mouth is more precious to him than a thousand pieces of silver and gold. I can always look back and see (though I can almost never think it in the moment when it's so painful) that it was good that I had to walk down hard paths. Hindsight is a gift.”“It's difficult to train our kids in something that we're battling ourselves. Sometimes we can feel hypocritical and end up avoiding things like that with them. Or maybe we feel it is tender to train our kids in a subject that we are struggling with. But I would encourage parents to lean into it. We can learn things right alongside our children. We don't have to have things perfected in our minds in order to train our children up in the way they should go.”Resources Mentioned:Left Out: Believing My Story is for God's GloryBearTown by Fredrick BackmanAnxious People by Fredrick BackmanA Man Called Ove by Fredrick BackmanWhere You Can Find Jill:Substack: The Gold StandardInstagram: @jillatogwe Get full access to Beyond the Boxes at rebekahhargraves.substack.com/subscribe

The fine line between transparency and TMI. Let's get into it: oversharing at work — we've all done it, and we've all cringed after. But here's the tea: when we spill sensitive info without thinking, we're not just breaking trust, we're tanking our ability to Care Personally and Challenge Directly. In this episode, Kim, Jason, and Amy dig into a listener's story about sharing too much too soon and just how quickly oversharing can derail trust and create chaos. They unpack why these missteps happen, how different company cultures play into it, and what it really takes to find that sweet spot between transparency and discretion. Andrew and Ben trace the strategic zigzags of America's far-left, recount their pioneering role in organizing drives, and measure the Party's own accounts of its politics against the often ambiguous, even contradictory realities of its practice. Did Communists merely supply the shock troops for someone else's political ambitions, or did they put their stamp on the CIO, in ways that were durable and lasting? Did their practice of unionism conform to the mainstream of the labor movement, or did it contain the germs of another kind of CIO? What, ultimately, did the CIO do to the Communist Party?  As the Republican National Convention comes to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Laura talks with award-winning reporter and author, Malaika Jabali, author of "It's Not You, It's Capitalism: Why It's Time to Break Up and How to Move On”. Wisconsin is one of the most racially unequal states in the country, with rising housing costs outpacing wages and one of the highest Black male incarceration rates in the nation. It's also seen a precipitous decline in Black voting — for either party. Are these things connected? Back in 2020 Jabali went to Milwaukee to find out and made a short film “Left Out“ in which she spoke to Black elected officials as well as non-voters. In this episode of Laura Flanders & Friends we'll revisit that film, hear Jabali's advice for concerned Dems, and answers, when it comes to the RNC, what's in it for Black Midwesterners? All that and a commentary from Laura. Jabali is the former Senior News and Politics Editor at Essence Magazine.“It's almost a cottage industry of trying to figure out what happened with the white working class . . . The other side of that is that you have a lot of Black non-voters. A lot of Black people are saying, ‘We don't have any options between the Republican and Democratic party' . . . So they tend to stay home. It was me trying to understand what was going on behind the numbers. I barely saw any journalism about it.” - Malaika Jabali“. . . We have a propaganda machine through the US government, media, law and policy that made it illegal to be socialists . . . Martin Luther King, the Black Power Movement, the Black Panthers, they were surveilled for any hint of thinking about any anti-capitalist thought . . . What kind of system is that where it is so hell bent on freedom, but does not give you the freedom to think about other ideas and types of policies? I don't consider that very democratic.” - Malaika JabaliGuest:  Malaika Jabali: Journalist & Author, “It's Not You, It's Capitalism”Full Episode Notes are posted HERE.  They include related episodes, articles, and more. Episode #92: For anyone who has been hurt by a friend--or a group of friends--recently or in the past, this 14-minute episode is for you. It's a solo episode that came from my reaction to a TikTok video I saw by a woman who was left out of a group trip years ago and has decided she will never trust anyone with her friendship again. Other titles I considered: (and all relate to this 14-minute episode!)Not All Women Are Vicious Don't Let Being Left Out Dictate Your Future FriendshipsDon't Overly Focus on the Friends Who Rejected YouYou (and your kids) Will Survive Being Left Out There is a Natural Drifting From Friends at Each Age and Stage of LifeIn other words, I covered all of the above in this one. LINKS MENTIONED:The TikTok video I'm reacting to in this episode “Why Big Friend Groups Often Fail and Helping Kids Handle Friendship Conflict” with Dr. Lisa Damour“I'm Just Not Into This Friendship” with Ruchi Koval“Friends Will Hang Out Without You” with Taryn Kessel“Difficult Teen Friendships and Parent Involvement” with Stephanie Sprenger“Every Friendship Starts or Deepens With an Act of Bravery” with Amy Weatherly and Jess JohnstonQUOTES FROM THE EPISODE: "There's so much focus on who wasn't interested, who drifted away, who left, who left you out, who left your kid out. Let's focus on who said yes. That is where our energy should be.”“I don't think it's a good idea to ‘normalize,' to use an extremely overused word on the internet, turning our lives upside down when friends do things without us. If we're going to normalize anything, let's normalize that friends WILL hang out without us. Just like we sometimes want to hang out in smaller groups or with just one or two people.”* All transcripts are available on the main Buzzsprout "Dear Nina" site. This week we dive into 2nd Corinthians chapter 5 in a message titled "Make a Play." Despite what we tell ourselves... God didn't put us on the planet to "ride the bench." Our position on the team isn't "Left Out." Jesus came to redeem and restore people, places, and things and His work isn't finished! Better than that... we're invited to be a part of it! He brought us on the team to Make Plays! But if we're honest... it doesn't always feel that way. Often it feels like other people are the ones God is using and we're just hanging on the sidelines. Well if you've ever felt that way or have even wondered how God has wired you to contribute to His work in the world, this Sunday is for you! We're excited to gather together and celebrate all Jesus has done, is doing and will do both in us and through us! As in this poem by Gary Snyder:  The Trail Is Not a Trail“I drove down the FreewayAnd turned off at an exitAnd went along a highwayTil it came to a side-roadDrove up the side-roadTil it turned to a dirt roadFull of bumps, and stopped.Walked up a trailBut the trail got roughAnd it faded away—Out in the open,Everywhere to go.”  ["The Trail Is Not a Trail" by Gary Snyder, from Left Out in the Rain. © North Point Press, 1986.] You're invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, would you subscribe, share a 5-star rating + nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time!Meanwhile, stop by my Quarter Moon Story Arts website to:✓ Check out What I Offer,✓ Arrange your free Story Starter Session,✓ Opt In to my monthly Newsletter for bonus gift, valuable tips & techniques to enhance your story work, and✓ Stay current with Diane and on LinkedIn.Stories From Women Who Walk Production TeamPodcaster: Diane F Wyzga & Quarter Moon Story ArtsMusic: Mer's Waltz from Crossing the Waters by Steve Schuch & Night Heron MusicAll content and image © 2019 to Present: for credit & attribution Quarter Moon Story Arts

Do you Live Loved? Do you live your life filled up with the fullness of God's love in you? I don't know about you, but sometimes I struggle with this, so I am really excited to recommend a book to you. It is called *Uninvited: Living Loved When You Feel Less Than, Left Out, and Lonely. It is by Lysa TerKeurst; she is one of my favorite authors. I actually read this book back in 2016. It released the same month that my friend passed away, and I remember reading it. But I have to tell you that I don't remember all the takeaways from it because I was in such deep grief. I just recently read it again, it was actually the perfect timing because I walked through a situation last year where I felt some rejection as well as it has just been a lonely season in my life as my kids are getting older and ready to launch. So I need this message in my life; I need to live loved! Cannot wait for you to hear about being set apart and the olive tree! So much wisdom in this book! Also, I am so excited for someone to win a copy of Lysa's book: *Uninvited. All the details of the book giveaway are on my website at jodirosser.com or you can click this direct link: https://kingsumo.com/g/jfn0mb/uninvited-book-giveaway I refer to my book, *Depth: Growing Through Heartbreak to Strength in this episode. Here is a direct link to my book page on my website to listen to my book trailer and find out more. *Note: If you are interested in purchasing these recommended books, I would love for you to use the Amazon Affiliate link above to help support the podcast. We mark the end of Black History Month with a conversation about the people who are too often left out when we celebrate the past. What do we learn when we study the history of those considered wayward and existing outside of the norms of the day? Cultural historian and MacArthur fellow Saidiya Hartman introduces host Kai Wright to the young women whose radical lives were obscured by respectability politics. Hartman is the author of "Wayward Lives, Beautiful Experiments: Intimate Histories of Riotous Black Girls, Troublesome Women, and Queer Radicals," which offers an intimate look into some of the Black lives that have been seemingly erased from the history books. Through a series of readings, they explore the complicated role of Black intellectuals like W.E.B DuBois, the Black family and how a damaging moralism continues to inform the policing of marginalized communities, public space and American cultural politics today. This episode was originally published as “The ‘Beautiful Experiments' Left Out of Black History” on February 8, 2021. Listen to more episodes here. Companion listening for this episode:  Faith Ringgold Creates Space for Black Americans (1/5/2023) Faith Ringgold's art is an intimate dialogue and debate between generations of Black women, stretching from the formerly enslaved to today. “Notes from America” airs live on Sunday evenings at 6pm ET. Does creativity help physicians care for their patients? Can making space for stories improve healthcare? How does imagination come into play in the practice of Medicine? Jay Baruch is a Professor of Emergency Medicine at Alpert Medical School of Brown University, where he directs the Medical Humanities and Bioethics Scholarly Concentration. He's a practicing ER doc, writer and educator. His upcoming book of non-fiction, narrative essays is: Tornado of Life: A Doctor's Journey through Constraints and Creativity in the ER (MIT Press, fall 2022) He is also the author of two award-winning short fiction collections, "What's Left Out" and and "Fourteen Stories: Doctors, Patients, and Other Strangers" (Kent State University Press, 2007). His academic work emerged as a response to the realization that medical training didn't prepare him for the complexity, uncertainty, and ambiguity that pervades patient care. His teaching involves interdisciplinary collaborations and pushing boundaries with people who hold different expertise and ways of looking at the world. His innovative collaborators have included brilliant museum educators, designers, and artists. Past honors include Director-at-Large, American Society for Bioethics and Humanities, the medical humanities section chair for the American College of Emergency Physicians, and faculty fellow at the Cogut Institute for the Humanities at Brown University. He received the inaugural Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Gold Humanism Award and the Brown Emergency Medicine, Innovations in Education Award.
