Weekly sermons from Resurrection Church Sai Kung, Hong Kong

If we are going to live wisely, we need to understand that our actions have consequences. Our deeds are leading us to a certain destiny. Proverbs reveals the inescapable moral order woven into the fabric of reality itself. And it points us to the only way to receive a better outcome than all our deeds deserve. 05-10-2025 - Lucas Durant

God calls us to love, treasure and cherish him with all that we are, and all that we have, with all our being, and all of our doing, in each and every aspect of life. If we don't, both success and failure will be a danger to us.28-09-2025 - Kevin Murphy

There are certain ways of living that are characteristic of the wise. You can observe them in generation after generation. What are the "family traits" of wise people down through history? Solomon gives us three.21-09-2025 - Lucas DURANT

The scriptures tell us that it is possible to grow in wisdom, but it won't happen by accident. God is pleased to give us wisdom! But we need to know and accept His terms and conditions. 07-09-2025 - Lucas Durant

We live in a time when we can observe evils happening all over the world in real time. Provoking our outrage has become a core business strategy within the attention economy. But Psalm 37 gives us wisdom for how to walk in the way of peace. Peace within, Peace without, Lasting Peace.17-08-2025 - Lucas Durant

Psalm 23 is the probably the most well known poem in the world. Why? Because it speaks to the universal human experience of feeling weak and afraid. And in the midst of deepest darkness, it gives us a message of peace and hope.10-08-2025 - Lucas Durant

The famous philosopher and atheist Bertrand Russell was once asked what he would say if, after death, he found himself standing before almighty God. Russell replied - "Not enough evidence, God! Not enough evidence." Many people share the sentiment, but is that right? According to the Bible God is a speaking God. Psalm 19 shows us that God is speaking constantly, universally and verbally. 03-08-2025 - Lucas Durant

"To thine own self be true." But who are you? The scriptures teach us that before we can know who we are, we need to know who God is. Psalm 8 shows us God and our selves.27-07-2025 - Lucas Durant

Where are you looking for satisfaction? The Rolling Stones famously sang I can't get no satisfaction; the author of the book of Ecclesiastes agrees. Satisfaction is fleeting. Or is it?20-07-2025 - Lucas DurantPre-recorded for broadcast during T10 storm.

Almost every profession and job has a code of conduct which sets out the expectations for us in our work. But our most important roles - spouse, parent, child, etc - don't come with one. In Ephesians 5:21-6:9, Paul gives us a household code for Christian people. He sets out the principle, then he shows what it looks like for different members of the household to apply it.29-06-2025 - Lucas Durant

The darkness of sin is much more of a problem than we generally recognise. We can see the darkness not only in sinful deeds, but also in sinful words and thoughts. The problem goes all the way down into us, and all the way out across society. But Christians, the Bible says, are light. And by God's power, even our darkness is made light.22-06-2025 - Lucas Durant

Many people have struggled with certain besetting sins and character flaws for years, if not decades. Can people ever really change? Paul says Christians can and must change. And he shows us the engine for change that transforms us from the inside out. 15-06-2025 - Lucas Durant

"Live a life worthy of the calling by which you have been called." Knowing the high calling on the church in Ephesians 1-3, how could we ever live up to it? By God's grace we have been given gifts to equip us for the worthy life.08-06-2025 - Lucas Durant

As Paul moves from explaining God's big plan for the universe to the practical implications of that plan for the church, he prays. His prayer gives us a great model of how to pray for our church in particular and the church universal. 01-06-2025 - Lucas Durant

When we read the book of Acts, we find that in the earliest days of the church there was a Copernican revolution in terms of understanding God's plan for His People. The mystery that was formerly hidden but now revealed is that Christ's salvation is open to all people without distinction. Jews and Gentiles have been equally incorporated into third-kind of humanity, one new family - the church.25-05-2025 - Lucas Durant

Everywhere we look in the world, people are divided. Public discourse, politics, international trade - it's all become increasingly hostile. What is God's answer to our divisions? The Cross of Christ. There at the cross, our hostilities were put to death and we were reconciled to God and one another.18-05-2025 - Lucas Durant

Becoming a Christian always requires a miraculous work of God. Paul reminds Christians of what we were, tells us what are and explains what we are for.11-05-2025 - Lucas Durant

What is God's blueprint for your life? Knowing God's master plan will enable you to live confidently and give you a sense of direction. Ephesians summarises God's big plan.27-04-2025 - Jack Wong

If Christ was raised from the dead, then death is not the end and there is an eternity of joy ahead for all Christians. It's a wonderfully comforting thought. But is it true? And if it is, what does it mean?20-04-2025 - Lucas Durant

Where do we expect to find God? Are there dark places in the world and in yourself where you are certain he cannot be found? The cross crucifies what we know about how God works. 13-04-2025 - Lucas Durant

What do you do with overwhelming guilt? Remorse is not enough. Bring it to the cross. 30-03-2025 - Lucas Durant

Amid false testimony, sham trials, denials and cursing - Jesus remained silent. Understood rightly, his silence sounds like grace.23-03-2025 - Lucas Durant

How can we understand Jesus' deep and sudden sorrow in Gethsemane? It is a foretaste of the cup of God's wrath that he would soon drink for us. And knowing exactly what it would cost him, he went through with it.16-03-2025 - Lucas Durant

Jesus uses the passover meal to give us an interpretive grid for his death. Christ's death is the source of salvation and the the centre of salvation history.09-03-2025 - Lucas Durant

What is Jesus worth? Some will calculate his worth according to whether he helps or hinders their goals. Love ends calculations. 02-03-2025 - Lucas Durant

When the end of all things comes, and Jesus Christ returns, what should we expect? The judgement of all people. If all will be judged, then it is important to know who will judge and what his criteria will be. 23-02-2025 - Lucas Durant

Christ will return, the end will come... but how should that shape our priorities in the present. Jesus' parable of the talents explains how best to invest our present labours in light of the end.16-02-2025 - Lucas Durant

Christ will come again and bring the world as we know it to a sudden, unexpected, cataclysmic end. No one knows when. So, keep watch and be ready. 9-02-2025 - Lucas Durant

It's the end of the world as we know it... or is it? The disciples heard news that made them think that everything was collapsing, but Jesus' instruction was "stand firm". Let's take him at his word.02-02-2025 - Lucas Durant

In his inaugural sermon among his home congregation, Jesus preached good news for the poor. The initial response was delight, but quickly shifted to violent outrage.26-01-2025 - Lucas Durant

Jesus' first miraculous sign was turning water into wine. This can be seen as a foreshadowing of the pattern of his entire ministry. As we examine this sign, we see three essential aspects of what Jesus came to do - remove shame, transform lack, reveal glory. 19-01-2025 - Lucas Durant

Epiphany is the time of year when Christians celebrate the revelations concerning Jesus' unique glory. The Magi were some of the first to have receive such an epiphany. God rearranged the heavens to bring them near, he spoke to them through the scriptures to make it clear, and coming into his presence his glory appeared. 05-01-2025 - Lucas Durant

Happy New Year! But what does that mean? Where does blessing come from, what is it, and how can we receive it? 29-12-2024 - Lucas Durant

Christmas is the antidote to all our anxieties. In the first Christmas song, sung by Mary, we learn how we can go on singing. 15-12-2024 - Lucas Durant

In the midst of what seems like chaos, God has a plan. Far from making us passive, God tells us his plan in order to call us to live by faith in Him. Faith in God's plangives us ultimate hope in the face of every trial. 08-12-2024 - Lucas Durant

Evil should make us angry. But when does righteous anger crossover into unrighteousness? When wicked behaviour is dealt with wickedly, how does God respond? 01-12-2024 - Friedemann Barinske

God says we need to be changed into the image of His Son. But most of us hate change. How does God accomplish his work? He wrestles us. 24-11-2024 - Lucas Durant

There are many ways that people try to secure blessings for themselves. But there is ultimately only one source from which all blessings flow. 17-11-2024 - Lucas Durant

Though the LORD can radically heal and restore a person's life, the cause and effect consequences of sin normally knock on long after repentance and conversion. Why does the LORD allow those difficulties to continue? Laban's Deception and Leah's Disappointment show us that it is the LORD's Discipline for our good. 10-11-2024 - Lucas Durant

This episode in Jacob's life is profoundly encouraging. It shows us that God is not distant. His power is actively shaping directing world and his presence is intimately close to his people. Jesus Christ is the connection between heaven and earth. 03-11-2024 - Lucas Durant

This ranks as one of the most dramatic stories in the Bible. The characters each have their own aims and they will stop at nothing to achieve them. But while each person sinfully pursues their own goals, God achieves his purpose. God cannot be stopped. 27-10-2024 - Lucas Durant

How do we explain the difference between those who embrace the Christian faith and those who reject it? Do people become Christians because they are more moral, more clever or better in some way? The story of Jacob and Esau powerfully dismantles that idea. God's saving purposes in the world are advanced by his sovereign election. 24-10-2024 - Lucas Durant

Christians are motivated by God's grace to give generously. Yet even when we are motivated to give, we must still determine how to give. Paul's instruction to the Corinthians helps us to invest our resources wisely, trusting God to produce a harvest. 13-10-2024 - Lucas Durant

According to the scriptures, the way we use our money can tell us a great deal about the condition of our hearts. A heart that has been changed by God's generous grace is revealed in generosity. This section of 2 Corinthians gives us a model for what a healthy heart looks like and a prescription for bringing our hearts to full health. 06-10-2024 - Lucas Durant

The hospitality of Christian people has been one of the most powerful tools that God has used to advance the gospel and change the world. God still works through this sacramental means. When we show hospitality to strangers, we may be entertaining angels without knowing it. 29-09-2024 - Lucas Durant

Humanity is rife with divisions. False worship retells human stories and reinforces those divisions. Biblical worship reveals reality from God's perspective and invites us to participate in God's story. True worship must shape the whole life of a Christian. 22-09-2024 - Lucas Durant

Hospitality, according to the Bible's use of the word, means "love for strangers", and it was primarily shown by welcoming weary people one's own home and providing for their needs. According to Ephesians 2, Christ meets us as weary strangers, alienated from God and one another. But in his hospitality toward us, Christ welcomes us in and makes us family. 15-09-2024 - Lucas Durant

Why is there something rather than nothing? Many people buy into the secular materialist worldview which tells us that nothing became everything by chance and that human beings are the product of countless generations of violence. To believe this is to believe that the world is fundamentally a hostile and meaningless place characterised by scarcity and competition. The Bible tells a very different story about a Creator God who is the ultimate host, making total provision for his honoured guests and welcoming them into fellowship with him. To believe this is to see the world as a fundamentally delightful and meaningful place characterised by abundance and love. Which world are we living in? 08-09-2024 - Lucas Durant

What are you boasting in? What is the thing that thrills you, gives you purpose, and gives you confidence. Paul says there are only two kinds of boasting - boasting that may look outwardly impressive but is ultimately empty, or boasting in the cross. 01-09-2024 - Lucas Durant
