He suffers on the way. Why? Join us as we explore this profound question and hopefully find some reasons for peace in the midst of our hard times. Speaker: Pastor Jeff Boettcher
If God already knows everything and knows what you need, why pray? If God is in control of history and the world, why pray? If God is already going to accomplish his work, in his timing, and in his way, why pray? And what is prayer, anyway? Let's explore these questions together, and see how the Bible not only defines but also models prayer. And together, we can discover the invitation from God to not pray to him, but to pray with him as we go through the ups and downs of our everyday lives. WAYS TO LISTEN & SUBSCRIBE:

If God is in control of everything, can Christians sit back and not bother to evangelize? Hardly! I clarify the roles and responsibilities when sharing the faith. What does God do? What should we do? We do a thorough study of Scripture and find out! This teaching is loosely based on the modern classic, Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God, by J.I. Packer.
Today's show welcomes the insightful J.D. Greear, a pastor, author, and podcast host. We'll explore challenging faith questions that many grapple with or may encounter when interacting with others. This episode promises to be concise yet impactful for anyone seeking answers or desiring to support loved ones on their spiritual journey. J.D. Greear's book, 12 Truths & a Lie: Answers to Life's Biggest Questions, guides our discussion. We'll address prevalent lies we may believe, how God transforms doubt, the reasons behind suffering, unanswered prayers, and the persistent struggle with anxiety despite faith. Join J.D. and I as we talk about: The big lie we believe God can use our doubts If God is in control, why is there suffering Why isn't God answering my prayers If I am a believer, why do I still struggle with anxiety Favorite quotes: (4:08)- “The majority of our Bible is written by people who are in a season of doubt whether we are talking about the Old Testament or New Testament.” (5:03)- “Doubt is often divinely used as a way of drawing you deeper into who God is and the majesty and mystery of who he is.” (10:59) - “One of the things you find is when you are praying you are praying to a God who is not only infinite in power and infinite in love. He is also infinite in wisdom.” (11:44)—“Sometimes, He says be persistent and keep asking and knocking, but sometimes, He says he heard you. He is always answering, but the answer right now is: I know more than you, and I am going to do something better than what you're asking.” Coaching this week: (21:14) Simple Things That Give You the Most ROI Today in coaching, I share a list of easy-to-do things that can have a huge impact on your daily life. Text: Psalm 33:1-22 (ESV) Shout for joy in the LORD, O you righteous! Praise befits the upright. 2 Give thanks to the LORD with the lyre; make melody to him with the harp of ten strings! 3 Sing to him a new song; play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts. 4 For the word of the LORD is upright, and all his work is done in faithfulness. 5 He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the LORD. 6 By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host. 7 He gathers the waters of the sea as a heap; he puts the deeps in storehouses. 8 Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him! 9 For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. 10 The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; he frustrates the plans of the peoples. 11 The counsel of the LORD stands forever, the plans of his heart to all generations. 12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage! 13 The LORD looks down from heaven; he sees all the children of man; 14 from where he sits enthroned he looks out on all the inhabitants of the earth, 15 he who fashions the hearts of them all and observes all their deeds. 16 The king is not saved by his great army; a warrior is not delivered by his great strength. 17 The war horse is a false hope for salvation, and by its great might it cannot rescue. 18 Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love, 19 that he may deliver their soul from death and keep them alive in famine. 20 Our soul waits for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. 21 For our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name. 22 Let your steadfast love, O LORD, be upon us, even as we hope in you. SHOUT FOR JOY IN THE LORD There's a call to worship God for the righteous, which is befitting for them to do. Giving thanks through singing, especially singing a new song unto Him.[v.1,2] This is a reiteration of the last 2 verses of Psa 32. Why? In v.4-5, God's attributes are too evident to ignore. The psalmist declares, “For the word of the LORD is upright, and all his work is done in faithfulness. He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the LORD.” Moreover, His sovereign power in creating the world through His word. “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host. He gathers the waters of the sea as a heap; he puts the deeps in storehouses. Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him! For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.” [v.6-9] The plans and purposes of God are immutable. “The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; he frustrates the plans of the peoples. 11 The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of his heart to all generations.”[v.10-11] His sovereign knowledge of man's heart and intentions is one of the reasons. “13 The Lord looks down from heaven; he sees all the children of man; 14 from where he sits enthroned he looks out on all the inhabitants of the earth, 15 he who fashions the hearts of them all and observes all their deeds.”[v.13-15] Also, His preserving power over his own people. “The king is not saved by his great army; a warrior is not delivered by his great strength. 17 The war horse is a false hope for salvation, and by its great might, it cannot rescue. 18 Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love, 19 that he may deliver their soul from death and keep them alive in famine.”[v.16-19] Upon knowing that God is our help and shield, our resolve is to wait upon Him whatever the circumstances might be, is it not? Waiting is evidence of calmness, control, and trust. If God is in control we must be calm and composed. [v. 20-22]

When we have certain expectations and the result goes a different way, we look for a place to put our disappointment and often deflect it onto others. Sometimes, we'll even blame God. If God is in control, why wouldn't we expect the world to go a certain way? Bad things happen. So how can we know that God hasn't let us down? That may be the very question that was on a young teenage girl's mind as she and her husband found strange lodging to prepare for the most spectacular event the world had ever seen.
Our world's unpredictability is at an all time high. Whether we are all facing uncertainty as a nation or if we're facing unknowns individually and within our families - it's easy to be overwhelmed and discouraged. However, for Christians we have no reason to be afraid or dismayed, because despite how things may look, our world rests in the hands of our God. What if we began looking at life and interpreting all of life through that lens? If God is in control, how should we as His own children act and react under His rule? In this series we conclude that in order to stay most engaged with our God, we ought to trust in Him, pray to Him, and obey Him in every situation and season. In this first message, having established that our God is in control and with these aspirations to engage with Him, we discuss what it means to trust totally in Him and live from a place of confidence in His plans. If God is with us, no matter what, we can live with confidence that He is trustworthy and His plans are good. If He's got the whole world in His hands, that means we are always right where we need to be.
If God is in control of anything, what part do we play in this life? Do we have any free will at all? Or, is God to blame for everything? This week on Romans Untangled, we will start to explore this age-old, and very relevant question. For more resources or to learn more about Hope Community Church, visit hopecc.com.

Pastor Rodney Nichols learned at a young age that he was musically talented and was asked to direct the Pastor's choir. But he knew God had a greater plan for him. In June of 2000, he accepted his calling to be a preacher. He became the Pastor of True Faith Holiness Church for four years. After he met his wife in 2008 and graduated from Bible College, they planted the Garden of Praise Christian Fellowship, where they serve today. Their mission statement is to “extend, equip, and deploy.” They extend the hand of God to the lost, equip those who are seeking with the teachings of God's infallible word, and deploy those who they've equipped to build the kingdom of God on earth. Pastor Rodney's motto is “If God is in control, then we won't be out of control.” In this episode of Upthinking Finance™, we talk about Pastor Rodney's church, his ministry, “Midnight Soldiers,” and following God's calling on his life. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in...[5:46] How you can feel God's call on your life [7:22] Forming Garden of Praise Christian Fellowship [16:14] The mission and vision of Midnight Soldiers [18:33] The power of small churches to make a difference [24:29] What's next for Garden of Praise Christian Fellowship Learn about Garden of Praise Christian FellowshipPastor Rodney pastored a church in Los Angeles for six years when God shared that it was time to go back to his home church. He sat on the “sidelines” for five years. After he married his wife, God laid on his heart that it was time to start his own church. God strategically put things in place so that Pastor Rodney's wife knew it was his hand guiding their steps. When they were doing the 501c3 paperwork, they met someone who completed the paperwork for free. God continued to strategically put people in place through the journey. Running a small church has always been a financial challenge but God continues to provide. Like many small churches, they rely on their church members to continue their mission. As a leader, he has to trust God and believe that the congregation is trusting God as well. Pastor Rodney emphasizes that “You have to do your part for God to do his part. Your only guarantee is your faith.” The mission and vision behind Midnight SoldiersGod woke Pastor Rodney up at midnight one night and gave him the name of the ministry—Midnight Soldiers—and told him what he needed to do. The goal of Midnight Soldier is to bring blessings to the homeless population in Los Angeles at midnight, a time when many people feel hopeless. God connected him with Pastor David at Oceangate who connected the church with the airport that supplied them with sandwiches, parfaits, salads, and more. One Friday night a month, Midnight Soldier hands out meals, hygiene kits, clothing, blankets, etc. to the homeless population on Skid Row. I had the opportunity to walk alongside Pastor Rodney numerous times. We'd show up singing gospel songs and march the streets handing out resources. We took the time to meet people and hear their stories. We prayed with them and offered emotional support. We might not have been able to change anyone's circumstances but in that moment, people knew that someone cared about them and that there was hope. Small churches are powerful but face many challengesI believe that small churches have the ability to make a difference. Finances should never get in the way of that. Sadly, people don't realize that finances hold many churches back from being able to do more in ministry. Many churches fold because they can't meet their budgets. If money was no object, there would be highly successful ministries doing bigger things for the community. What's next for Garden of Praise Christian Fellowship?Rodney's goal is to grow the ministry over the next two years and plant another Garden of Praise location. His desire is to impact another neighborhood to feel the authentic love of who God...

Have you wondered how prayer works? If God is in control of everything and his plans are unchangeable and unstoppable, then does it really matter what we do? Do our prayers really change the mind of God? Join us on Sunday as we tackle the tension of God's sovereignty (his absolute control) and the power and the authority given to the church through Jesus to change the world through prayer.
The world around us is filled with sickness, poverty, violence, and innumerable other terrible things. Yet somehow many Christians believe that God wants everyone financially prospered and physically well. How can they believe that when one simply looks at the world in which we live? If God is in control and everything we see is God's will, people must be crazy to think God wants everyone healthy and wealthy! But what about those promises in the Bible for our financial and physical blessings? How do those work in this world and how should we approach those promises if obviously God wants some people sick and broke. We answer all of these questions and more in this podcast. May God bless you!
On this episode, we continued our discussion on the Providence of God and finished our list of areas where God governs and guides the events of the world towards a divine purpose. We then discussed: How does God's providential control relate to man's sinful act? If God is in control of everything, then why is prayer necessary? What is God trying to accomplish through His providence? And what are some of the means that God uses in the exercise of His providence? Listen as Pastor/Dr. David Murphy discusses this topic and answers other listener questions.
The Mission of the CupbearerWe talk about God's sovereignty a lot, but we keep running into circumstances that—on the surface—appear to threaten that reality. If God is sovereign, why do his children go through such difficult times? God is about to open a way for Nehemiah to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the walls, but why were the walls in such disrepair to begin with? Before we answer that, let's make the question personal. Some of you have recently recovered from being seriously sick. We praise God for your recovery, but we may also wonder why you were sick in the first place. If God is in control, shouldn't we always experience health? Shouldn't God's people be the most prosperous? We know that isn't true, but why? Opposition and sickness are the consequences of living in a world corrupted by sin. It was Israel's sin of idolatry that led them into Babylonian exile. That doesn't mean that every trial we go through is the result of personal sin, but they only exist because God's good design, from the beginning, has been corrupted by sin. Trials will provoke a variety of negative emotions that have the ability to send us into a downward spiral of despair and frustration. Trusting the Lord does not eliminate trials, but provides the integrity to face them with courage. Read Nehemiah 2:1-8. This morning we will consider three ways that Nehemiah dealt with his trial in a positive manner. I. Nehemiah Was Honest (1-2) Presumably, Nehemiah has served the king continually these past several months. What's different about this occasion is that Nehemiah was no longer able to conceal his depression. He generally kept his sadness in check when he was serving the king (v.1), but it appears his sorrow became overwhelming. Imagine going through this emotional challenge. Some people wear their heart on their sleeve. Everyone knows when they're upset. In fact, it seems like they want others to sympathize with them. There is a term for this, it's called “Sadfishing”. It is described on Wikipedia as “a behavioral trend where people make exaggerated claims about their emotional problems to generate sympathy.” Maybe you know someone like that, or you experience that tendency yourself from time to time. Let's be clear, Nehemiah was not sadfishing King Artaxerxes. His life depended upon him maintaining a professional demeanor before the king. There is the very real possibility that this scene took place during a festival. It would certainly add to the tension if Nehemiah is viewed as Debbie Downer killing the party mood. Or, even worse, is the potential that his sadness could be interpreted as having something against the king (which was actually true). Moping or pouting to gain the king's sympathy wouldn't just get him fired, it could possibly get him killed! That is why Nehemiah “was very much afraid” when Artaxerxes noticed his sadness (v.2). That reaction would be inconsistent with a perfectly safe working environment. Artaxerxes may show his compassionate side in this passage, but we know that he was not afraid of executing people, even those who were close to him. In fact, Artabanus, the commander of the guard, killed Artaxerxes father and then encouraged him to murder his older brother in order to take the throne. After becoming king, Artaxerxes avenged his father's death by murdering Artabanus. Nehemiah was also sensing just how much was riding on this moment. He had been preparing for this opportunity for one-third of the year. His fear represents the recognition that he has reached the culmination of that time. Before we consider Nehemiah's response, let us reflect upon his integrity. We will see that he was honest in the face of sadness and bold in the face of fear, but let's pause here for a moment. Note his emotional investment in this project. What works up your emotions? What makes you sad or fearful? What gets you frustrated? Do you find yourself emotionally invested in...

If God is in control of everything and his plan is already set in stone, why pray---But if God does not control everything, and outcomes depend on human free will, then it's not up to God, so why pray-
Scripture For Today: Genesis 24:45 “Before I finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Behuel, son of Milkah, who was wife of Abraham's brother, Nahor.” God is Limited By Our Prayers pt 5Yesterday, we started off with the question some people will ask to the effect of, “If God is in control, why does He allow all the evil in the world?” We answered that question explaining that Satan has the legal ownership of the kingdoms of this world. I'm not going to go back and explain all of that again today. But it is important that we take up our conversation from that point we left off yesterday. It's been said that sickness and disease is the foul offspring of it mother, sin, and it's father, Satan. Romans 6:14 says, “For sin shall not have dominion over you; for you are not under the law, but under grace.” We could also read Romans 6:14 this way, “SATAN shall not have dominion over you because you are a believer!” Amen! I like that! Another way is to say that, “Sickness and disease shall not have dominion over you, because you are a believer!” Amen! In Colossians 1:13, we read about our Heavenly Father, “Who has delivered us from the power of darkness and has translated us into the Kingdom of His dear Son.” This entire world, the worldly systems, the worldly governments, including here in the United States, lies in darkness. But – through Christ – we are delivered from the power of darkness, or the authority of darkness. Amen! Yes, we still are subject to natural laws subjected to us by these rulers of the darkness. But our spirits are always free and NOT subject any other power than that of God. Amen! God can only move here on this earth as WE, the Christians, ask Him to. He would be moving into Satan's territory illegally if He did otherwise. But God has a people down here on this earth who have authority because we have been redeemed. Amen! Only as we ask God to move, and we do that through prayer, can God legally move in the earth and in our lives. To tell the real truth about it, Satan can't move in and work in a believer's life unless that person GIVES him the authority to do so. God works through man. Satan also works through man. When believers can learn to resist the devil and yield to God (James 4:7) and let God work through them, they will see the victory that has legally been purchased for them at Calvary. To yield to God means to yield to His Word. And God's Word says that we, as Christians, are to pray. God's Word also tells us HOW to pray and for what to pray and to WHOM to pray. We've already covered all of that before, so I won't go into detail here. Just let me summarize it again for you… Matthew 9:38 says we are to pray to the “Lord of the Harvest to send laborers into the Harvest.” If God could just send forth laborers without us asking Him to do so, or if He could do some other things without us asking Him to do so, then WHY do we have to pray for these things? If we don't need to pray and ask God to move in our lives, then we should all just sit back and let God do something about the situations in our lives and about getting all of the sinners in the world saved. But throughout the Bible, we see God telling man to pray and to ASK. Amen! We see God inviting man, over and over, to “call on Him.” Even in the Old Testament, we see God telling man, to “Call unto me and I will answer you and show you great and might things which you do not know.” In case you are wondering, that is in Jeremiah 33:3. Amen! There are many, many scriptures where God in inviting us to pray. When we pray, we open the door for God to move. That's the way God has ordained in His Word that it should be. Then Satan can't accuse God of being unjust. God will only move in line with His Word. God is LIMITED by the prayers of His children. Knowing that, we should be all the more diligent to pray as Jesus taught us

About Steve As one of the most inspiring speakers in the market today, Steve Hopper brings a fresh and powerful presence to the professional speaking industry. Steve has delivered hundreds of presentations at corporate events, leadership and business conferences, personal development seminars, high schools and universities, churches... and even correctional facilities! With his life shifting keynotes seminars and workshops, Steve leaves his audience with an overwhelming desire to want more, to do more, and to become more! Likewise, he's been featured on TV, Radio and in several magazines and publications. As the Author of “From Prison to Purpose” he has inspired the masses through his personal story of turning a setback into a comeback and winning the most important game of all, life. The First Phase Football was Steve's life. Until one night, when at a keg party on the beach in Florida, he engaged in a fight. Three days later, the police showed up at his parent's door. The clock stopped ticking. The judge revoked Steve's bond because the judge didn't know if the boy Steve hit was going to live or die. Would it be a murder charge, or an attempted murder charge? It was a bad choice, with bad consequences. Steve was sentenced to 10 years in prison. He learned to fight for his life in prison. About 1 year into this new life Steve broke down. In the darkest moment of his life, he remembered something that his grandfather had told him. His dreams and goals were gone. He felt his life was over. Then his grandfather's message came to him, “Son, promise me that if you are ever at your darkest moment in life and your back is against the wall and you don't think there is any way out, just get on your knees and pray to God.” Steve took his grandfather's advice and called out to God. He felt an immediate shift. Meaning and purpose came over him. In addition, he felt he was created for something way bigger for him than where he was at. Steve spent the next portion of his prison sentence reading and absorbing everything he could for personal development. He also started sharing what he was learning with other inmates. In some ways, this is what launched his second phase. The Second Phase When Steve was released from prison, he was able to get a job selling cars. He did very well and despite the title of ex-convict and having no college education he thrived. Happy and making six figures, life was great! Until, the company down sized and he was laid off. Losing Everything…Again Once again, Steve lost everything. Despite the fact that no one would hire him, he didn't give up. Not being hired was actually a blessing as it forced him into entrepreneurship. Becoming an Entrepreneur Steve used the resources and experiences he had garnered during his time working to create a marketing company. He started looking at his skill set and what was happening with small business owners to identify a need. It's important to remember as we go through negative circumstances, that we've been through bad things before and we can survive again. Steve believes that God will use those circumstances to prepare us for the next level, the next thing we are meant to be and do. Created to Do Something Amazing We've all been created to do something crazy great in our lifetime. We just can't forget and have to keep focusing on looking on those gifts. Likewise, unique gifts have been given to each of us. It often takes these negative experiences to identify what those gifts are. The Most Powerful Question Steve is now a motivational speaker and business coach. He helps clients identify their goals and dreams that they haven't tapped into yet. The most powerful question he asks someone is “if you weren't getting paid a dime to do it, what would you wake up every day and do?” This answer is often what the person is passionate about and meant to be doing. Ask yourself “If you could do anything what would it be?”. Steve's purpose and the thing he truly loved was speaking. He spoke for free for over a year. It's important to recognize the gifts that we have been given and tap into them. Favorite Quote “Knowledge is power, but sharing your knowledge is purpose.” – Steve Hopper This is Steve's favorite quote when encouraging coaching clients to share their gifts. Even if someone else is doing what you want to do, you should do it. No one else is going to do what you do the exact same way, which means that you will touch lives that others doing the same thing won't be able to reach. Nothing is Stopping You It is important to remember that there is absolutely nothing stopping anyone from anything that they want to do. Steve is an ex-convict with no college education speaking in multi-million-dollar masterminds. Anything is possible. He's believes that what we import is what we export. We have to take the opportunities to gain education and college is an example of an opportunity to identify purpose. If God is in control, and we trust that God is in control, we know that he will direct us to where we need to and doing what we need to do to serve our purpose. If God is in control and if God is good, why would He allow bad things to happen to people who don't deserve it? If He allows it, can't he be to blame? These are questions that many of us struggle with. But looking at the story of Job, is there a better question we should be asking? www.impactchurchmd.com
If God is in control, how can human beings have free will? On the other hand, if human beings don't have free will, how can God hold us morally accountable for the things that we do? The Bible teaches that God is sovereign over all things but also that human being are genuinely free to make decisions. The Bible itself doesn't give us the answer of how these two biblical teachings can both be true. To harmonize them is the task of systematic theology, not biblical theology. Molinism is a theological system that seeks to account for divine sovereignty and human freedom. Molinism is the view that God uses His knowledge of what any free creature would freely choose in any given circumstance to orchestrate every event that occurs without violating human freedom in the process. In this podcast episode, Mr. Minton reads aloud his paper "The Case For Mere Molinism" which shows that out of all the theological systems on the table, only Molinism can account for the entirety of scripture's teachings. Disappointment. We all experience it. We all know what if feels like. We have all at some time or other said and done things when disappointed with our circumstances or other people that we have later regretted. But what are healthy ways to handle disappointment in our lives? On this podcast I continue my conversation with the author John Hindley on his book, "Dealing With Disappointment: How To Know Joy When Life Doesn't Feel Great". (Our earlier conversation at Podcast #032 is here). Disappointment can so easily come to dominate life - the nagging thought in the back of our minds and the constant "yes, but..." colouring all our pleasures. Do join us as we discuss practical ways to find joy through disappointment. In particular we discuss: Disappointment with my circumstances. The power of a different perspective rather than relying on the stoicism that we tend to default to. Or, in other words, how to defeat those painful things that are true by looking at things that are more true. Finding a balance between working too much or too little. Disappointment with people. How do I decide if it is something I should forgive and move on from or something I should forgive and then talk with the person concerned about? For more on this also see: Podcast #025 Is There A Difficult Person In Your Life? Disappointment with my success. John and I confess personal examples of how easy it is to tie up our meaning and identity with things that are actually quite trivial. How the good things of life are a signpost to a far greater work and person we should be enamoured by. How "the fuel for living a truly successful life is to know that you will one day live it perfectly, and with perfect satisfaction." For more on this also see Podcast #002 Success. Disappointment with myself. How facing up to the painful reality that I am not the person I wish was can be not the last word in our lives, but part of our story to greater wholeness. The freedom that comes from understanding, as John writes, "Your purpose in life is not to be perfect. Your purpose in life is to showcase God's grace to the imperfect." Balancing in my life God's gift of forgiveness with the gift of integrity. Disappointment with God. For people of faith, this is probably the hardest disappointment to face up to. As John says, "If God is in control - and He is- then behind all your disappointments with your relationships, your circumstances, your ministry and yourself must lie disappointment with God......God could have, should have, might have....and didn't. So often, in so many small and serious ways, it feels as if God doesn't come through." For more on this also see Podcast #028 The God I Don't Understand. What are some of the toughest questions you have ever asked about God and Jesus? You see, if you grew up in the church like me, chances are, at some point in your life, you started asking some difficult questions about God that your friends and family couldn't answer to your satisfaction. Did it matter? Well, maybe. Here's the thing: questions have the capacity to strengthen your faith, or possibly even destroy it. In this episode, I interview Brad Jersak. Brad is an author and teacher based in Abbotsford, BC. He's on faculty at Westminster Theological Centre (Cheltenham, UK), where he teaches New Testament and Patristics. He serves as adjunct faculty with St. Stephen's University (St. Stephen, NB). And he's also the senior editor of the CWR (Christianity Without the Religion) Magazine, which is based in Pasadena, CA. Some of his books include Can You Hear Me?, Her Gates Will Never Be Shut, and A More Christlike God. IN THIS EPISODE, BRAD ANSWERS THE FOLLOWING: • Can you tell us a little bit about A More Christlike God and why you wrote it? • Is there such a thing as "the God of the Bible"? • Is it possible that we find the kind of God we want to find in the Bible (God of peace/grace/anger/war)? • Humans have produced a vast pantheon of gods, how do we know what God is like? • There seems to be as many versions of God as there are people. How is your God the right one? • Are our ideas of God simply glorified projections of ourselves? • Walter Wink said, "atheism is the first step toward true worship." What exactly does that mean? • In your opinion, what are some of the false images of God? • Why does the "God of the Bible" seem so un-Christlike? • Why did it take so long for God to reveal himself perfectly in Jesus? • Mark Driscoll said he can't worship a Jesus he can beat up. What is your response? • How do we know your understanding of Jesus isn't just an upgraded version of yourself? • Did God punish Jesus for our sins on the cross? • What does the cross demonstrate about the nature of God? • How is the cross a response to the problem of suffering? • Who or what is Jesus saving us from? • In what sense do you believe Jesus died for us? • Can Jesus truly identify with a person who has been married, divorced, molested, or raped? • Isn't it arrogant to talk about God's nature? Who are we to say? • Is God free to do whatever he pleases (even things considered to be evil in our eyes)? • Why is God so violent? Didn't he even command genocide in the Bible? • Does God have a dark and wrathful side that balances out his goodness and love? • If God is in control, then why is there so much chaos in this world? • If God is such a loving Father, then why is there so much suffering? • Why doesn't God protect us from natural disasters? • Desmond Tutu says that "God does nothing without a human partner"? Do you agree? • You say that God operates in the world by consent. What do you mean by that? • According to you, what is "The Beautiful Gospel"? • What is "The Gospel in Chairs"? • Hector Avalos argues, in The Bad Jesus, that Jesus is flawed. What is your response?
