I couldn't settle on anything to narrate this morning and decided to just speak about some things that were reflections, and recalled a revival story I had read from James Hall and the Revival in North Carolina in 1802. At then end I read from Ruth Bryan's diary, and somehow tied it all together.

In 1991, James Hall joined the Umatilla Tribal Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter on the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation in Eastern Oregon. Today, Hall is the fire chief of the agency, leading its response to structural fires, wildland fires and calls for ambulance transportation services in a coverage area spanning hundreds of square miles. In February, Hall was appointed by Governor Tina Kotek’s Office to serve a three-year term on the Governor’s Fire Service Policy Council, making him the first tribal representative to serve on the council in its history. A bill passed by the Oregon Legislature last year made changes to the council’s membership, including a requirement that one of its members be a fire agency representative from one of Oregon’s nine federally recognized tribes. Hall shares his recent work on the council and efforts to advocate for all tribal fire agencies in the state.

Why Isn't Everyone Tapping Into the Ancient Wisdom of Mushrooms? with Alli Schaper What if the tools for healing grief, protecting your brain, and accessing direct divine experience have been growing in the earth for thousands of years and most people just forgot? In this episode of Why Isn't Everyone Doing This?, Emily Fletcher sits down with Alli Schaper, entrepreneur, wellness pioneer, and co-founder of Super Mush, for a wide-ranging conversation that moves from the science of Lion's Mane to the cultural history of psilocybin, from grief and brain trauma to microdosing as ceremony, from a black bear encounter in the wilderness to why worry is brakes on our prayers. Alli got off eight to nine pharmaceutical medications at 23 and became her own doctor. Functional mushrooms were the turning point. She built Super Mush, a brand born at the intersection of ancient plant wisdom and modern neuroscience, and founded the Microdosing Collective, a nonprofit dedicated to education and access for low-dose psychedelic use. This conversation is grounded, personal, scientifically curious, and spiritually alive. In this episode, they explore: – What a 5,000-year-old caveman named Otzi tells us about the staying power of functional mushrooms – Why Lion's Mane is one of the most promising tools for protecting the brain against cognitive decline – How the brain of someone on mushrooms looks similar to the brain of someone in deep meditation – Alli's mother's microdosing journey through grief after losing her father, and what it actually looked like – The James Hall story: catastrophic brain trauma, a medical miracle, and six months of microdosing – Why "worry is brakes on our prayers" and how detachment accelerates manifestation – The vision quest story, the black bear, and what real fear teaches you about daily stress – Emily's experience microdosing with her Ziva team, and what they built together that day Key Moments: 06:49 – The "holding company" reframe for romantic partnership 18:25 – Lion's Mane and cognitive protection explained 38:34 – Mushrooms, religious ceremony, and the history of psychedelic sacrament 42:35 – The RAND report: 10 million microdosers in 2025 48:13 – How psilocybin helps metabolize grief without numbing it 56:45 – James Hall: brain trauma, medical miracle, and microdosing 01:03:13 – Worry is brakes on our prayers 01:12:35 – Alli's vision quest and the black bear encounter 01:24:55 – Prayer as technology: tuning your instrument, not controlling outcomes About Alli Schaper Alli Schaper is an entrepreneur and co-founder of Super Mush, a functional mushroom brand rooted in ancient wisdom and modern neuroscience. In this hilarious and insightful Ward Radio episode, Cardon Ellis sits down with filmmaker Barrett Bergen (director of the new Mormon comedy short Java Jive) and James Hall to unpack the future of Latter-day Saint comedy. Why is so much "Mormon humor" either too insider for outsiders or overly sanitized? How can we create comedy that's authentically LDS yet universally funny — like Jewish comedians have mastered for generations? They discuss ditching the "cringe" and shame around everyday faith quirks (like coffee on a date), embracing confidence in our identity, and why self-deprecating humor earns respect.Plus: Clips and breakdown of Java Jive — a future missionary on a date with a non-member, forbidden fruit (coffee) on the menu, and the hilarious fallout. In this episode of Off Script, Josh, James, and Tom discuss the importance of innovation in Leeds and the broader UK, emphasizing the need for representation and funding for technology outside of London, triggered by an article Tom wrote titled "National purpose on AI". Tom shares insights on the historical context of innovation in Leeds, the role of academic research, and the success stories of tech companies in regions like Stoke-on-Trent. They also propose Manchester as a suitable location for Lovelace Labs and call for a national data library to be established in Leeds. The discussion highlights the need for a more confident and proactive approach to promoting Northern innovation and addressing funding disparities. The UK government often overlooks innovation happening outside London. Leeds has a rich history of innovation and should be recognized for it. The tech sector in Stoke-on-Trent is surprisingly larger than in Oxford. Academic research is crucial for innovation but often underfunded outside major cities. There is a need for a national data library to be based in Leeds. Manchester is a strong candidate for the proposed Lovelace Labs. Local companies need to be more vocal about their contributions to the economy. Funding for innovation should be more evenly distributed across the UK. The North should celebrate its successes and promote its strengths more actively. A cultural shift is needed to demand more respect and representation for Northern innovation.

In this episode of Off Script, hosts Josh and James delve into the contentious topic of whether AI is destroying open source software. They discuss the recent layoffs at Tailwind, a popular open-source project, and how AI's ability to generate code from existing libraries is impacting the sustainability of such projects. The conversation highlights the ethical implications of AI's use of open-source code without proper attribution, raising concerns about the future of open-source maintainers and the community's ethos. They explore the balance between the benefits of AI in enhancing productivity and the risks of diminishing the value of original contributions to open-source projects. AI is changing the model of open source, not necessarily destroying it. The burden of maintaining open source projects is increasing due to AI's impact. Attribution and compensation for open source maintainers are critical issues. AI can automate mundane tasks, allowing maintainers to focus on creative work. The learning process for developers may be compromised by AI's ease of use.

Susan Brown is a professional editor, writing coach, and book doctor. She's had forty years of teaching college creative writing and book editing, and has guided dozens of books into print as an editor, and as a writing coach. My friend Jeff Moran in Woodstock had previously mentioned Susan to me, and so I was intrigued when I heard that Susan was going to run a five week online writing workshop called “The Secrets of the Great Writers”.Jeff had told me that Susan was a James Joyce scholar. That was a little bit intimidating, but also immediately credentializing. I've appreciated a number of books on writing, by Stephen King, George Saunders, Anne Lamotte, Mary Karr and others, and thought it might also be instructive, and interesting, to be part of a writing workshop, so I signed up for Susan's class. I learned a lot in the workshop, we had a terrific group of very talented fiction and memoir writers in the class, and it was a lot of fun. One of the dozens of sources Susan identified for us during the workshop was a book called Hit Lit - Cracking the Code of the 20th Century's Biggest Bestsellers, by James Hall. In his book, Hall identifies the features common to the biggest bestsellers of all time. Susan and I discussed her Secrets of the Great Writers Workshop. Susan actually conducted an abbreviated Workshop on the Air. We discussed Hall's Hit Lit and we discussed Ulysses. We discussed storytelling. I loved this discussion. The books examined in Hit-Lit, many of which are referred to in our discussion.Gone with the Wind*Peyton PlaceTo Kill a Mockingbird*Valley of the DollsThe Godfather*The ExorcistJawsThe Dead ZoneThe Hunt for Red October*The Firm*The Bridges of Madison County; andThe Da Vinci Code**I've read these. Some of the other books referred to by Susan:Moby DickThe Scarlet Letter The LighthouseSound and the FuryThe Lincoln LawyerBlack Cherry BluesGone Baby GonePride and PrejudiceLet the Great World Spin Madame BovaryThe Glass CastleAngela's AshesWildCatcher in the RyeLolitaUlyssesI encouraged Susan to run a class guiding us through Ulysses!
