In today's episode, we'll be visiting the Old Washoe Club in Nevada, once a resting place for miners and luxury seekers and, according to some prominent paranormal investigators, a place of violent unrest for some of its dead.

Today, it's believed that the people who were formerly incarcerated at Old City Jail haunt its grounds. Unsurprisingly, there are reports of all of the classic signs of a haunting: objects that seemingly move on the own, disembodied voices and ghostly whispers, and slamming doors. Some of the other things people have experienced, however, are more sinister and not so common.....

The historical preservation at Colonial Williamsburg isn't limited to buildings. Visitors can also be immersed in early colonial life by visiting the blacksmith shop, brickyard, African American religion exhibit, carpenter's yard, courthouse, governor's palace, as well as historic farming and gardening sites. In fact, Colonial Williamsburg has been so meticulously preserved with adherence to historical standards that, if all the tourists were to suddenly abandon colonial Williamsburg, a 17th or 18th century ghost might feel quite at home. 

New Orleans is famous not just for Mardi Gras but for its unique culture, history, and contagious joie de vivre. While the city excels in celebrating life, its a place that doesn't shy away from death, either. Known world wide for its lively and joyous jazz funeral processions as well as its above ground cemeteries and ghost stories, New Orleans embraces its spookier side. The Dauphine Orleans hotel, with its luxurious spaces and haunted history, truly embodies the duality of the city.

They say that the undead are very much alive in Savannah. The ghosts of Native Americans, slaves, and casualties of the Civil War roam as freely as you or I. The site of many historical events and tragedies, it's no wonder how Savannah got its reputation as one of the most haunted cities in America. Even within this ghostly city, Old Candler Hospital stands out as a site of exceptional paranormal activity, and locals claim that the old hospital is one of the scariest places in town. 

The ghosts of Union and Confederate soldiers, still engaged in battle, wander the grounds of Harper's Ferry, West Virgina. The ghost of a freed slave still searches in vain for his family. A priest glides silently through the brick walls of his former church. A place famous for its importance during the Civil War, its ghosts roam the town today, a constant reminder to its modern residents of the horrors that once passed there.

We talk a lot on this podcast about how extremes of human energy often seem to result in hauntings or paranormal phenomena. We've visited abandoned hospitals, roads, state parks, ghost towns, hotels, and battlefields. Today, we'll be discussing a location which fits the bill for hauntings almost better than any other, a former prison known as Mansfield Reformatory, that many believe to be one of the most haunted locations in the United States.

A place of beauty associated with Midwestern wholesomeness, North Dakota might not be the first place we'd think of being associated with dark entities or hauntings. It's not just one building. It's not an old mansion or a single jail or an abandoned asylum or gallows. This legend goes beyond a single building, beyond one physical place. No, the most haunted location in the state of Kentucky is one where multiple tragedies occurred over the course of hundreds of years.   There is a legend haunting the sleepy town of Woodstock, Vermont that sounds like something out of a medieval European castle. Although it was already an impressive structure, Lemp used his massive brewery fortune to turn the thirty-three room house into a Victorian showplace. However, tragedy and misfortune struck the Lemp family and, by the time the brewery closed in 1919, it was the site of several suicides in the family along with a few untimely and mysterious deaths. Paranormal experts say that sudden and tragic deaths can cause spirits to become stuck, or earth-bound to the places they died. Once a place for conquistadors, salvaging, and adventures, the railroad industry transformed Key West into the largest and most luxurious city in all of 19th-century Florida. Today, it's a popular vacation spot, a place where the free spirited can go to unplug and get away from it all. But Key West is also a haunted city, and the La Concha Hotel with its many spirits are a large part of its ghostly atmosphere. As schoolchildren, we're taught about the founding of America. Like most countries, we have a rich, fascinating, and imperfect history. Colonists came over from England and established settlements, often clashing with the residing Native Americans. Life was hard, full of starvation, disease, and conflict. We have preserved much of this history—you can visit Plymouth Rock and a replica of the Mayflower in Massachussetts today, or stop by Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia and tour historic buildings and reenactments of early American life. But for all of our preservation and knowledge of colonial history, we still have no idea what happened to the lost colony of Roanoke or its many residents, who disappeared without a trace by 1590. It began when John Bell witnessed a strange, unnatural creature which vaguely resembled a dog. It ended with Bell's death.  In the sleepy town of Adams, Tennessee on a small family farm, one of the most infamous American paranormal events occurred over a period of four years. From late 1816 to 1820, the Bell family was tormented by an entity that came to be known as the Bell Witch. Who hasn't heard a version of the haunted hitchhiker story? A driver on a dark, foggy road late at night comes upon a woman in a beautiful dress. Against his better judgment, the driver gives her a ride home. Eventually, the ghostly rider disappears, leaving the driver wondering who…or what, he just had in his car. Chicago's Resurrection Mary is perhaps America's most famous iteration of the haunted hitchhiker legend. But is there some truth to this particular tale? Danger is inherent in the deep woods of the American landscape. Some places in America are famous for just one unexplained phenomenon or event, but Massachusetts' Freetown-Fall River State Forest is home to dozens of strange things of various types—from occult activity and murders, to cryptids, to physical locations with unexplainable “energies.”

  Sometimes, hauntings and legends spread like a game of telephone.  The story starts out with the truth and, as it's passed from person to person, it morphs and changes, picking up sinister and mysterious details along the way until it becomes a thing of its own.  Whatever the truth is, all that the residents of the former town of Pere Cheney needed to know to prove that the witch's curse was real was to look around at their dead.
