Today’s podcast begins back home in Malaysia, then picks up in Calcutta (3:58), followed by dispatches from both Agartala (12:22) and later Siliguri. After making fun of North Korea and China’s national “elections” (15:50), we take a deeper look at China and India’s relationship (25:52), followed by China’s efforts to (literally) silence the languages of the minorities in China (43:51). Lastly, our brief look at this week’s Pray for China cities happens to include (without prior planning) a call to pray for Tibet (55:17). Welcome to China Compass on the Fight Laugh Feast network! Paton (JohnGPaton.com) Borden of Yale: The Millionaire Missionary (BordenofYale.com) Unbeaten: Arrested, Interrogated, and Deported from China (Unbeaten.vip) Why the Prison Pulpit? The goal is to remind people to pray for persecuted believers as Hebrews 13:3 teaches: “Remember those who are in prison, as bound with them.” We’ve looked at Wang Yi and Early Rain Church’s writings in the aftermath of their arrest and attack in 2018, but I’ve also regularly turned to other persecuted ministers who have gone before, such as Richard Wurmbrand, to give us a voice literally from prison. Thoughts on Bangladesh and How to Pray… When I first started learning about Bangladesh in 2002, there were only about 130+ million people. Today that number is closer to 180! Let me help you with an example of just how crowded it is… similar in size to Georgia, Iowa, and Alabama, but with 15 or 25x more people!s **Bangladesh is the most densely populated sovereign nation larger than 1,000 square miles** - It has a population density of roughly 3,538 per sq. mile (1400/km)! - Virtually all higher-density entries are tiny city-states, territories, or micro-nations far below 1,000 square miles, including: Macau (~33 km², ~22,000/km²), Monaco (~2 km², ~19,000/km²), Singapore (~710 km², ~8,225/km²), and Hong Kong (~1,100 km², ~7,000/km²). - Among sovereign countries (or comparable large entities) exceeding the size threshold, no other nation surpasses Bangladesh. Next in line for larger countries include places like Taiwan (~636/km²), the Netherlands (~548/km²), and South Korea (~529/km²). Islam growing faster than anything else Christians converted from Islam are growing, but still a tiny minority (200k) Pray for more laborers, open doors, boldness, and protection from the evil one As always, put yourself “in their shoes” as you pray… How to Give? There is obviously much we do know to pray for, but I want to remind you that there is also so much we DO NOT KNOW. For instance, Iran’s regime-induced internet blackout keeps us from hearing much at all from the majority of Iranians who are cheering on the potential fall of the Islamic regime. Let’s not forget them. My guess is if communication were functioning normally, we’d be inundated with positive messages from within Iran. One report I saw estimated that in Iran it's more like 95% against the Ayatollahs and 5% for. But we really just don’t know. Since the Mayflower sidled up to Plymouth Rock, cult ideology has been ingrained in the DNA of the United States. It turns out that Puritan doomsday belief never went away; it just went secular and became American culture. From our fascination with cowboys and superheroes to our allegiance to influencers and self-help, susceptibility to advertising, and undying devotion to the self-made man, Americans remain particularly vulnerable to a specific brand of cult-like thinking. With in-depth research and compelling insight, journalist Jane Borden uncovers the American history you didn't learn in school, including how we are still being brainwashed, making us a nation of easy marks for con artists and strong men. Along the way, she also revisits some of the most fascinating cults in this country—including, the Mankind United and Love Has Won—presenting them as integral parts of our national psyche rather than aberrations. Join the author live for a night of pop history that contextualizes the current rise in far-right extremism as a natural result of our latent indoctrination, and proposes that the United States is the largest cult of all.(Sounds effects for sketch provided by freesound_community from Pixabay)Episode was recorded live February 26, 2026.Website: https://peculiarbookclub.com/Newsletter: https://subscribepage.io/schillacenewsVIP Membership: https://payhip.com/PeculiarBookClubYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@PeculiarBookClub/streamsBluesky: @peculiarbookclub.bsky.socialFacebook: facebook.com/groups/peculiarbooksclubInstagram: @thepeculiarbookclub

In Episode 250, I sit down with Dr. Brianne Borden and Claire Howard, co-owners of Yoga for All Musicians, for a conversation that is equal parts grounding, honest, and immediately useful. ·         Why "just focus on the music" is not always possible, and what to do when the world follows you into the practice room ·         The simple check in skill most musicians never learn, and why it changes everything from practice choices to injury prevention ·         How classical music culture trains disconnection, and what trauma informed teaching and cueing can actually feel like ·         A reframing of expectations that sounds small, but hits hard once you try it in real life ·         A short centering plus neck and shoulder reset you can do before you play, especially if you live in jaw and shoulder tension If you're ready to step on stage with confidence, perform at your best, and finally feel secure in your playing, let's talk! Blinkist Podcast - Interviews | Personal Development | Productivity | Business | Psychology

What if the United States wasn't just influenced by cult-like thinking, but shaped by it from the very beginning? This week on Simplify, Caitlin Schiller speaks with journalist and author Jane Borden, whose book Cults Like Us: Why Doomsday Thinking Drives America explores how cult dynamics show up across U.S. history, politics, consumer culture, and self-help. From Puritan theology to superhero movies, Borden argues that cults aren't fringe phenomena—they're extreme versions of patterns baked so deep into American culture that they came over in the metaphorical sourdough starter brought over on the Mayflower. Together, Caitlin and Jane unpack why Americans are so drawn to comfort, certainty, and strongmen—and what it costs us when we give up agency in exchange for reassurance. You'll also hear about Caitlin's new least favorite figure in history (spoilers: it's the compunctionless Edward Bernays), dismantle the stories about power we're told, learn how the desire for comfort slowly erodes democracy, and where we should turn—if not to a singular outside "hero"—to save the day. In this weeks episode we launch the new 'Proust Photo Quiz'. Friend of the podcast photographer Harry Borden is the first to take the questions on... The Proust Questionnaire is a set of questions answered by the French writer Marcel Proust. Proust answered the questionnaire in a confession album, titled An Album to Record Thoughts, Feelings, etc. The album was found in 1924 and published in the French literary journal Les Cahiers du Mois. Our 'Proust Photo Quiz' is an adaption of the original text. Harry Borden was born in New York and brought up on a farm in Devon in the South West of England. He studied photography at Plymouth College of Art and Design. Borden moved to London after graduation, where he worked as an assistant for the photographer Lester Bookbinder. He received his first commission from The Observer in 1994 and continued to work for the title until the present day photographing celebrities, musicians, creatives and politicians. Europa in omwenteling. Transatlantische perikelen. She was the quiet churchgoer. The dutiful daughter. The last person anyone expected to wield a hatchet. But on an August morning in 1892, the Borden home in Fall River, Massachusetts, became the scene of one of the most savage double murders in American history. And the name Lizzie Borden became synonymous with murder itself. In this episode, we step inside the Borden home to uncover what really happened—the brutal killings, the family tensions no one talked about, the trial that transfixed a nation, and the enigmatic woman at the centre of it all. Was Lizzie a cold-blooded killer? A victim pushed to violence? Or a scapegoat of Victorian morality? But the story doesn't end with the verdict. The house is still standing. Still watching. Still haunted. Guests report children giggling in the attic. Shadows beside their beds. Their own names whispered from the dark. The murders may be over a century past, but something seems to remain. This isn't just a story about what happened in 1892. It's about a place haunted by violence, a search for justice, and a mystery that will likely never be solved.

November is Nol-vember here on ⁨@wedrinkandwewatchthings⁩ and we're kicking off the month by pulling apart the cinematic mechanism that is Christopher Nolan's 2006 masterpiece of deception, "The Prestige." Grab your favorite drink...maybe our featured Danton's Obsession cocktail? Because this movie is as dark, rich, and endlessly complex as the rivalry it depicts. Get ready to dive into the world of Angier and Borden, where dedication to the craft becomes a blood-soaked obsession. This week, we are dissecting every stage of the illusion: The Pledge, The Turn, and most importantly, The Prestige. We'll be talking about the breathtaking performances by Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman, the incredible mood created by the Victorian setting, and the film's central, terrifying question: What are you willing to sacrifice for greatness? We also touch on the genius of David Bowie as Nikola Tesla, the unforgettable—and deeply unsettling—role of technology, and which magician, in our opinion, paid the heavier price for their art.If you love puzzle-box narratives, cinematic sleight-of-hand, and dark psychological thrillers, this is the episode for you. Lizzie Borden, the young woman accused of butchering her father and stepmother with an axe in their quiet Fall River, Massachusetts home in 1892. What began as a shocking local crime quickly became a national obsession, filled with gruesome details, strange inconsistencies, and a courtroom spectacle that would forever cement Lizzie's name in true crime history. We explore the tense family dynamics simmering inside the Borden household — the jealousy, resentment, and whispers of inheritance that may have fueled the rage behind the murders. Listeners will follow the chilling timeline of that August morning: the locked doors, the missing handle on the supposed murder weapon, and Lizzie's oddly calm demeanor in the hours after her parents were found slain. We break down the police investigation, early forensic blunders, and the testimony that both condemned and confused. Then came the trial of the century, where Victorian ideals of femininity collided with brutal reality. Could a well-bred Sunday school teacher really commit such a violent act? Or was Lizzie the scapegoat of a town desperate for answers? From her shocking acquittal to the eerie legacy that followed, Sean, Jorge, and Eric walk through the full story — from the family tensions and blood-stained evidence to the enduring myths, nursery rhymes, and ghost stories that keep the legend of Lizzie Borden alive more than a century later.www.patreon.com/theconspiracypodcast
