Jane Borden discusses her book, Cults Like Us: Why Doomsday Thinking Drives America. She explains why the doomsday beliefs of our Puritan founders still drive American culture. Tracing threads of our latent Puritan indoctrination through eugenic cults, prosperity gospel, and the current rise in far-right extremism, she proposes that the United States might just be […]

Donald Wright speaks with Carman Miller about his book The Black Box: Lady Bessie Borden's Family, 1863–1956. In a remarkable tale of tragedy, war, family conflict, and imperial diplomacy, The Black Box presents a collective biography of four generations of women in an elite Nova Scotia family during the late-nineteenth to mid-twentieth century. These intelligent, educated, artistic women were pragmatic and autonomous persons who contributed to the development, maintenance, defence, and management of the Borden family's material resources. Illustrating the changing nature of the time, the book explores the adventurous and curious lives of women who moved at the highest levels of society. It examines how the synergies of their private and public lives redefined their place in society during an era when the state and religion became more active and private lives more public. It also demonstrates the role and importance of the material components of social power, such as dress, residence, clubs, and travel. Drawing on archival material retained by the family, the book reveals how the Borden family defined, secured, and sustained its status in society. The Black Box is a unique record of an elite family's response to the changing political economy of imperial Canada. Carman Miller was born in Nova Scotia and educated at Acadia University (B.A., 1960; B.Ed., 1961), Dalhousie (M.A., 1964) and University of London (Ph.D., 1970). In 1967, he joined the History Department at McGill as a Lecturer; he became Assistant Professor in 1971 and Associate Professor in 1977. He also served as Chairman of the department from 1978 until 1981. Miller's research interests are primarily in Canadian military and political history of the late 19th and early 20th century. This week, we dive into another famous true crime story, Crime Classics brings us “The Bloody, Bloody Banks of Fall River.” Host John Tefteller is joined by researcher Karl Schadow and Bernard Herrmann biographer Steven C. Smith to unpack this 1950s take on the Lizzie Borden case. The episode walks us through the tense, tightly wound world of the Borden household, leading up to the infamous murders and the trial that followed. It's a familiar story, but Crime Classics gives it a unique edge with its dry narration and psychological focus. We also take an in-depth look at Bernard Herrmann's score, which uses just a few instruments to build tension. It's a perfect example of how this series could take a well-known case and make it feel fresh, unsettling, and gripping. Today’s podcast was recorded in a church parking lot in Enfield, CT. The show travels down memory lane, as I try to remember more details from the days leading up to my arrest and interrogation on the night of April 30, 2018, including a look at a number of things I did wrong that likely led to my capture by the Chinese Communist police. In the latest instalment of Murders That Haunt, Yvette Fielding turns her attention to one of the most infamous and unresolved criminal cases in American history.Fall River, Massachusetts, 1892.On a sweltering August morning, wealthy businessman Andrew Borden and his wife Abby were found brutally murdered inside their own home.Their daughter Lizzie was tried, acquitted, and never charged again. The case was never solved. But something, it seems, has never left that house on Second Street. This week, Yvette explores the full story of Lizzie Borden: the woman, the trial, the mystery. Before stepping into the paranormal legacy that has made the Borden house one of the most investigated locations in the United States. From the heavy, deliberate footsteps that climb the staircase and stop dead on the landing, eerily mirroring Abby Borden's final moments, to the unexplained indentations that appear on the bed in the very room where she was slaughtered: the reports from guests and investigators are as unsettling as the murders themselves. We look at the sightings of a silent woman in Victorian dress, the curious presence that moves objects and leaves guests with a creeping sensation of being watched from just over their shoulder, and the haunting detail that perhaps says it all: someone was in that house, and nobody could prove who.Joining the case files of Mary Blandy, Al Capone, Mary Ann Cotton, Amelia Dyer, H.H. Holmes and The Corned Beef Killer Ethel Major, Lizzie Borden takes her place in the series as a woman history couldn't convict, and a house that refuses to forget.Lock the doors and make sure you don't go upstairs alone!A Create Podcast Hosted on Acast. This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! PART TWOMost people think they know the story of Lizzie Borden: two brutal axe murders in 1892, a sensational trial, and an acquittal that still fuels debate more than a century later. Today, the former Borden family home stands as a popular haunted bed and breakfast, often portrayed as a site of mischievous spirits and lingering tragedy. But what if the real horror didn't begin—or end—with Lizzie?Sam Baltrusis, who shares his firsthand investigations inside the infamous Borden house. According to Sam, some of what he encountered felt far too intelligent, far too oppressive, and far too dark to be explained as simple residual hauntings.Could a malevolent entity have influenced the family long before the murders occurred? John is joined by Matthew Borden, partner and co-founder of BraunHagey & Borden, and Kory DeClark, partner at BraunHagey & Borden. They discuss litigation challenging federal law enforcement responses to protests, focusing on the Dickinson case in Portland, Oregon, that resulted in an injunction restricting how government agents may use force against demonstrators. The case arose from a series of protests against immigration enforcement policies. The plaintiffs alleged a pattern of excessive and indiscriminate force by federal agents at these protests that chilled lawful First Amendment activity. The legal team assembled extensive evidence, including 62 sworn declarations and video footage, documenting incidents such as using pepper spray on an 82-year-old woman and firing tear gas and projectiles at peaceful protesters. The effort to gather evidence was intense, involving rapid coordination among attorneys, staff, and volunteers to identify witnesses, collect recordings, and conduct expedited discovery in only 28 days. The discovery included depositions of federal personnel and testimony from experts and local law enforcement officials, who contrasted federal tactics with established crowd-control practices. The evidence demonstrated a broad pattern amounting to an informal policy inconsistent with constitutional protections rather than a series of isolated incidents. One powerful piece of evidence, in addition to the limited training that is much inferior to what police receive, was that the government conducted no investigations of and imposed no disciplinary measures on the officers involved in these incidents. At the preliminary injunction hearing, the government largely relied on general assertions that protests were dangerous and that restrictions on force would compromise officer safety, while offering no direct rebuttal to specific incidents. In contrast, the plaintiffs emphasized that targeted, proportional policing methods were available and commonly used by trained local agencies, and that indiscriminate tactics such as tear gas often escalated tensions rather than restoring order. The resulting injunction limits the use of force to situations involving imminent threats and active resistance. It restricts the deployment of crowd-control weapons against passive or non-threatening individuals. These constraints align with existing use-of-force standards and have not been shown to endanger officers when implemented. The government has appealed the preliminary injunction to the Ninth Circuit. Finally, they discuss BraunHagey & Borden's “impact” practice of focusing almost 20% of its work on pro bono activities on cases that could have the maximum impact for a broad group of people or change the law to benefit a large group of people.Podcast Link: Law-disrupted.fmHost: John B. After a few personal updates from these past couple of days since returning to Malaysia, I begin by talking about the new Hong Kong security law that empowers gov’t to search phones and other devices, and why this isn’t quite the big deal as some want to make it seem. Also, I talk about Canada’s search of my phone. (7:54). Next, we take a few minutes for a fascinating look at global gasoline prices (22:05). Then, we look at the REALITY of China’s energy consumption (Hint: its not as Green as it seems)(26:50). Another well-written article from India provides a helpful take on the two things China lacks as it attempts to grow into a world superpower (32:19). Next to last, we work through an eye-opening take by a Chinese writer for a Japanese newspaper, comparing China’s current economic state to Japan’s back before the real-estate bubble burst 30+ years ago (38:50). Last but not least, while looking briefly at this week’s Pray for China cities, I tell the story of the one and only time I was caught red-handed smuggling Christian literature from Hong Kong into China (47:04). Today we will look at some of his “birthday writings” from prison… Richard Wurmbrand Remembers Birthdays in Communist Romania https://chinacall.substack.com/p/a-pastors-prison-birthday And find out more about Michael Wurmbrand’s ongoing ministry (and free books!)... https://richardwurmbrandfoundation.org/ How to Give? Today’s podcast begins back home in Malaysia, then picks up in Calcutta (3:58), followed by dispatches from both Agartala (12:22) and later Siliguri. After making fun of North Korea and China’s national “elections” (15:50), we take a deeper look at China and India’s relationship (25:52), followed by China’s efforts to (literally) silence the languages of the minorities in China (43:51). Lastly, our brief look at this week’s Pray for China cities happens to include (without prior planning) a call to pray for Tibet (55:17). Welcome to China Compass on the Fight Laugh Feast network! Thoughts on Bangladesh and How to Pray… When I first started learning about Bangladesh in 2002, there were only about 130+ million people. Today that number is closer to 180! Let me help you with an example of just how crowded it is… similar in size to Georgia, Iowa, and Alabama, but with 15 or 25x more people!s **Bangladesh is the most densely populated sovereign nation larger than 1,000 square miles** - It has a population density of roughly 3,538 per sq. mile (1400/km)! - Virtually all higher-density entries are tiny city-states, territories, or micro-nations far below 1,000 square miles, including: Macau (~33 km², ~22,000/km²), Monaco (~2 km², ~19,000/km²), Singapore (~710 km², ~8,225/km²), and Hong Kong (~1,100 km², ~7,000/km²). - Among sovereign countries (or comparable large entities) exceeding the size threshold, no other nation surpasses Bangladesh. Next in line for larger countries include places like Taiwan (~636/km²), the Netherlands (~548/km²), and South Korea (~529/km²). Islam growing faster than anything else Christians converted from Islam are growing, but still a tiny minority (200k) Pray for more laborers, open doors, boldness, and protection from the evil one As always, put yourself “in their shoes” as you pray… How to Give? This week we start by looking at Rocket Man’s latest missile launch, and why China lets him stay around, followed by more thoughts on China and Iran, and then China’s attempts to hack Starlink. To remind people to pray for persecuted believers as Hebrews 13:3 teaches: “Remember those who are in prison, as bound with them.” We’ve looked at Wang Yi and Early Rain Church’s writings in the aftermath of their arest in 2018, but I’ve also regularly turned to other persecuted ministers who have gone before, such as Richard Wurmbrand, to give us a voice literally from prison. Let me recommend a little book (Return of the Raider/The Amazing Story of Sergeant Jacob Deshazer), that I was tempted to cover in a full Prison Pulpit episode: https://jacobdeshazer.com/return-of-the-raider The Middle East continues to be in the spotlight this week. There is obviously much we do know to pray for, but I want to remind you that there is also so much we DO NOT KNOW. For instance, Iran’s regime-induced internet blackout keeps us from hearing much at all from the majority of Iranians who are cheering on the potential fall of the Islamic regime. Let’s not forget them. My guess is if communication were functioning normally, we’d be inundated with positive messages from within Iran. One report I saw estimated that in Iran it's more like 95% against the Ayatollahs and 5% for. But we really just don’t know. Finally, we come to our topic of the day, Chinese Christians in Exile and Serving Abroad… I have to be careful here. I simply cannot give up too much info about the folks I’m going to mention, so bear with me as I search for the right words… - Chinese missionaries are being sent to most of western China, almost all of Asia (sans India), and much of the Middle East, and they “fit in” much better than Westerners in many of these places - They are being trained in much the same way Western missionaries are trained to work cross-culturally, not in a matter of days, but years, in strategic places both inside and outside of China - Some of them struggle to leave China (passports confiscated), but others cannot return, as they will be arrested upon arrival with their passports confiscated for the foreseeable future - We have a major project later this year to help the missionary arm of the Chinese Underground Church Strategic Opportunity to Give: MCI3.org ($50,000 need!) This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! Is it possible something far more sinister was at work behind closed doors?#TheGraveTalks #LizzieBorden #BordenHouse #HauntedMassachusetts #TrueCrimeMeetsParanormal #IntelligentHaunting #DarkEntity #HauntedHistory #FallRiver #ParanormalPodcast #HistoricHauntings Love real ghost stories?
