In this thought-provoking episode of Reasonably Happy, Paul Ollinger sits down with journalist and author Jane Borden to unpack her explosive new book Cults Like Us: Why Doomsday Thinking Drives America. Together, they explore how apocalyptic beliefs, religious extremism, and cult-like behaviors have shaped American identity—from Puritan roots to modern political movements like MAGA. Jane reveals how tribal psychology, anti-intellectualism, and the prosperity gospel fuel division, and why both the far right and far left are vulnerable to cultish thinking. With dark humor, candid insights, and a deep dive into American history, this episode is a must-watch for anyone curious about religion, politics, and the future of democracy. I begin by recommending a relatively unknown ministry (richardwurmbrandfoundation.com/) that I respect and support (0:44). Then we talk about the pros and cons of deporting all Chinese students in the US (9:33). Next, I talk about how I learned Mandarin (21:08), beginning 22 years ago this week, followed by an overview of the unique Chinese places to pray for this week (34:36). Finally, I tell a few more stories, beginning with the fun (also 22 years ago this week) of being surrounded by police in Shunde (43:01). We end with a couple of letters from William Borden (BordenofYale.com) dating back 120 and 112 years, respectively, as he shares (51:20) about the heathenism he witnessed and why he dressed like an Arab in Cairo. The LIzzie Edition Part V.bEpisode 256 we return to the mother of all murder mysteries, the case of Lizzie Borden in commemoration of the 125th anniversary of the verdict in her sensational trial, June 20, 1893. We again turn to the godfather of American True Crime, Edmund Pearson, the librarian who wrote slyly humorous takes of famous murder cases. His landmark essay, simply titled The Borden Case, makes up the first 119 pages of Pearson's Studies in Murder, from which this episode is adapted.Ad Free Safe House EditionBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/true-crime-historian--2909311/support.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to this New Year's mashup edition of China Compass and the Prison Pulpit! Nearly every week, I mention the Appendix to my little book, Unbeaten, which details my arrest, interrogation, and deportation from China in 2018. This appendix, entitled Remember My Chains, is the written version of a message I’ve given all over the world about how to pray for the persecuted church. You can get my book and the sermon, Remember My Chains, at Unbeaten.vip, or read it for free on Substack where it was just posted yesterday: https://chinacall.substack.com/p/remember-my-chains The following notes follow the basic flow of today's podcast... Borden of Yale: The Millionaire Missionary BordenofYale.com William Borden’s plea for more missionaries to serve in China: Beginning in September, he managed to visit at least thirty colleges and seminaries before sailing for Egypt in December. Spending one to three days in each place gave opportunities for private conversations as well as meetings. On many occasions, with the background of his experience at sea he would ask, “Are you steering or drifting?” ... Often Borden would meet one to whom it seemed too high, with another question: “Are you willing to be made willing?” “If ten men are carrying a log…nine of them on the little end and one at the heavy end, and you want to help, which end will you lift on?” .... In proportion to the population at the time, there were five hundred times as many ministers of the gospel in the United States as there were ordained missionaries in China. Wang Yi on the need for more evangelistic, church planting pastors in China: "Our churches are becoming crowded with middle class professionals. The gospel needs to enter the city more deeply. It must enter the drains, enter in with the petitioners and the marginalized peoples. If your church still has no pastors; if there are no pastors in your city, your community, or even your street; if your company has a GM but there is no pastor there; if the university you work for has a Party committee secretary but there is no pastor, then I must ask: do you know the average ratio of prostitutes to pastors in China? Do you know the ratio of thieves to pastors, of corrupt officials to pastors?" Wang Yi’s New Year’s (Twenty Year) Resolutions... Today, as a continuation of the Unknown Missionary series on The Postscript, we discuss the intriguing testimony and life (1887-1913) of missionary William Whiting Borden. Borden was a rich young man with incredible intellect and aptitude who gave everything he had for the cause of Christ. Provost of Living Faith Bible Institute Brandon Briscoe has invited James Fyffe, former missionary and faculty professor of Missiology at the Living Faith Bible Institute to have this conversation. Summary In today’s podcast, I begin by talking about a great teaching opportunity in China (1:12) followed by an explanation of the “Borden Myth” (6:10). Then I work through a number of current China-related news topics (20:42). Finally, I turn to the province of the week, Guizhou, (40:32) and a couple of moving stories (45:16) of missionaries and martyrs. Wanna Teach in China? (bfwesten at gmail dot com) “I'm the only foreign English teacher in my university and the first one here since 2019! I've been teaching Spoken English to English majors in the College of Languages and Literature, which gives more opportunity to talk with students. I've been asked to teach Public Speaking and Debate next semester, so that should be fun and provide opportunities for good conversations. I've heard the university is hoping to increase the number foreign teachers in 2025 to about 10.. I'm wondering if you might have any brothers/sisters who are interested in spending some time in China. Our family would be thankful to have some like-minded folks around and I am happy to assist in the process. Growing up, many of us sang a rhyme about the crime attributed to Lizzie Borden that began, "Lizzie Borden took an axe." But did this young woman actually commit the crime for which she was accused and acquitted? What happened to the Borden family inside their home is not in dispute. Two people were murdered with an axe. What is unclear is how they came to that end. And perhaps that is why there are reputedly hauntings at this Fall River, Massachusetts home. Come with us as we explore the home, the family, the crime and the hauntings connected to the Lizzie Borden House. On August 4, 1892, in Fall River, Massachusetts, an incredibly grizzly event took place. Andrew and his wife, Abby Borden, were brutally murdered by repeated strikes with a hatchet to their heads. The primary suspect in the case was their daughter, Lizzie. In the subsequent trial, there wasn't enough evidence to convict, and ever since, people have wondered if Lizzie did, in fact, kill her parents, and if she didn't, who did?
