After hearing our episodes about the Reno Tahoe Territory, and visiting the Washoe Club, he wanted to talk about perhaps encountering the ghost of an old cowboy. Then, listener Chad tells about his personal connection to the UFO over Lake Oneida, New York, in 1997. Occurring just a few months after the famed Phoenix Lights, this looked remarkably similar. As if that's not strange enough, Chad's family's footage of the lights gained enough attention that he believes it is connected to a visitation of strange Men in Black-type characters, as well as his own mystery illness. Virginia City, NV rose as the center for silver mining with the discovery of the Comstock Lode in 1859 & became the nation's 1st industrial city. It was a bustling city that had cultural institutions like the opera & famous residents like Mark Twain. The Washoe Club opened its doors on B Street in the Reynolds Building on June 1, 1875. It was a luxurious space filled with giant plate glass windows & bronze statuettes & was nicknamed “The Millionaire's Club” because it was where the rich & newly rich would drink, play games, & visit with prostitutes. Less than 5 months after opening, a fire burned through downtown, destroying a good amount of Virginia City, including the Washoe Club. It didn't take long though for the club to find a new space – the trustee board for the club settled on a 3-story building on C street that even had a saloon on the bottom floor.The local mines began to diminish, Virginia City's population dwindled & the Washoe Club eventually closed in 1897. Because of the cities history with cave-ins, gunfights & greedy claim jumpers, it is no surprise that the Old Washoe Club is considered to be one of the most haunted locations in the West. Bar stools move on their own, the saloon doors will mysteriously swing open for ladies that are entering, & numerous shadow figures have been spotted on the upper floors. There are several spirits that are seen & felt in the Old Washoe Club & there is one spirit who has an affinity for alcohol. If you let a full shot of Bourbon linger too long at the bar, it will mysteriously be drained, & the staff will leave a full shot before leaving at night & it will be empty in the morning.Who or what still lingers at the Old Washoe Club? This week's guests are paranormal investigators “Mikey” Thompson and Cheryl Plumb. We met while touring Scotland together in 2022, and they both have some incredible stories to share. Michael A. Thompson “Mikey” is a registered nurse. Mikey's obsession with the paranormal started in the fall of 2002 after he found his sixteen-month-old daughter floating face down and lifeless in the deep end of the family pool. She survived this tragedy after being clinically dead for approximately 26 minutes. However, shortly after she returned home from the hospital, Mikey and his family's paranormal nightmare began. Their story has been featured in an episode of The Travel Channel's Haunted Hospitals. Mikey has also been a guest on Paranormal Experienced Radio with Kat Hobson, Dead Air with Ken Decosta and George Lopez, A World Awakening with Andrea Perron, and appearances on The Dark Zone and Spirit Realm Network. Having investigated such locations like The Queen Mary, Calico Ghost Towns Maggie Mine, The Winchester Mystery Mansion, Glen Tavern Inn, Old Paulding Jail, Colonel Allensworth Park, Washoe Club, and MacKay Mansion in Virginia City, Nevada, just to name a few, Mikey brings paranormal experience and his passion for helping others living or dead to every investigation. Cheryl Plumb is a dedicated and seasoned paranormal investigator with a passion for uncovering the mysteries that lie beyond the realm of the living. Then, there’s the back room of the Washoe Club, called “The Crypt.” In the wintertime here, it gets so cold that the ground freezes. Meaning that when people died in the wintertime… M: They couldn’t be buried in the ground? So… Oh no, don’t tell me… W: Yep, “The Crypt”, the room, was used to store the dead bodies. What’s the most haunted building here in Virginia City? W: According to the Internet, that would be… the Washoe Club. In 1873, 12 people died in an explosion. And it’s said that in the 90s, an old man committed suicide- and locals say he’s the most evil spirit! M: Oh, I’m not afraid of an old man! Except my dad when my grades are bad… W: Ha ha. Then, there’s the back room of the Washoe Club, called “The Crypt.” In the wintertime here, it gets so cold that the ground freezes. Meaning that when people died in the wintertime… M: They couldn’t be buried in the ground? So… Oh no, don’t tell me… W: Yep, “The Crypt”, the room, was used to store the dead bodies. Virginia City is an Old West mining town complete with a history of gun fights, explosions, brothels and mine cave-ins. The Comstock Lode was found in the Virginia Range near the future Virginia City and prospectors came looking for an alternative to the Gold Rush. Samuel Clemens was one of them. And when his luck at finding precious ore proved lacking, he took a job at the local paper and adopted the name we all know him by today: Mark Twain. The richer men in the city wanted a place to call their own and the Washoe Club was built for those millionaires. It is the oldest saloon in the city. And it is one of the most haunted locations in a reputedly very haunted town. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of the Old Washoe Club.
