There's an old rule in the Appalachian Mountains, if you hear your name called from the woods, don't answer. This week, we're delving into the hills to find out why. We cover folklore from a 200-year-old Tennessee haunting that killed a man, to a 10-foot creature that emerged in West Virginia in 1952, to the thing in the trees that learns your voice. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
Deep in the forests of early Tennessee, one family claimed they were tormented by an unseen entity that spoke, sang, attacked their children, and ultimately murdered the family patriarch. We descend into the terrifying true legend of the Bell Witch, one of America's most infamous hauntings that still haunts the Red River Valley more than 200 years later.Be sure to Subscribe, Rate, & Review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Audible!Support the show by becoming a sponsor on our Patreon: www.Patreon.com/NYMysteryMachineNYMM Merch! www.NYMysteryMachine.comHave a strange and/or paranormal story? Trenton Battle brings nearly a decade of hands-on experience as a former field investigator with the Hopkins County Paranormal Society in Kentucky, where he actively investigated paranormal activity from 2013 to 2021. His work has taken him deep inside some of the most haunted places in America, where unexplained encounters, ghost sightings, and eerie phenomena are more than just stories—they're lived experiences. In this episode, we dive into Trenton's investigations at infamous locations like Waverly Hills Sanatorium, Bobby Mackey's Music World (often called a "portal to hell"), Octagon Hall, Perryville Battlefield, and properties connected to the Bell Witch haunting in Tennessee. These locations are known worldwide in the paranormal community for intense ghost activity, dark history, and chilling firsthand accounts from investigators and visitors alike. We also explore what it's really like to be a paranormal investigator—what happens during an investigation, how evidence is collected, and how to balance skepticism with open-minded curiosity in a field filled with both truth and exaggeration. Trenton shares insight into paranormal research, ghost hunting techniques, and the psychological impact of investigating haunted locations. But this conversation goes beyond ghosts. Trenton Battle is now the Kentucky State Representative for the North American Dogman Project, a growing organization dedicated to researching Dogman sightings and encounters across the United States. The Dogman is one of the most talked-about cryptids in modern paranormal and cryptozoology circles, often described as a large, upright, canine-like creature with intelligence and speed that defies explanation. In this episode, we discuss real Dogman encounters, witness reports, and the growing number of sightings that continue to raise questions about what may be lurking in remote forests and rural areas. Is the Dogman a misidentified animal, a cryptid, or something else entirely? We explore the theories, the evidence, and the stories that keep this mystery alive. If you're interested in paranormal investigations, haunted places, ghost hunting, cryptids, UFOs, conspiracy theories, and unexplained phenomena, this episode is packed with insight and real-world experience from someone who has spent years in the field. Whether you're a skeptic, a believer, or somewhere in between, this conversation will challenge what you think you know about the unknown. What do competitive eating, a headless chicken, and a Soviet-era plan to nuke the moon have in common? They were all completely real, we talked about all of them, and honestly none of us are okay. This week we went fork-first into the deranged world of professional competitive eating — the training regimens, the diet cycles, the stomach expansion strategies, and the absolutely unhinged amount of money Joey Chestnut was making to inhale 76 hot dogs in 10 minutes. We broke down the most diabolical eating challenges on Earth (a 10-pound burger, a 5-pound inferno chip, and an ice cream challenge with a 97% failure rate that feels less like a dessert and more like a war crime), and had to decide – is this a sport? Spoiler — we said yes. Our standards are our own. Then things got weird. We covered the Tunguska Event — the 1908 explosion that flattened 800 square miles of Siberian forest, left zero crater, zero explanation, and apparently zero follow-up questions from the locals. We revisited the Bell Witch haunting that was so bad it convinced Andrew Jackson to physically leave Tennessee. We talked about Vesna, who fell 33,000 feet and lived, which science technically allows but should not. And Mike the Headless Chicken finally got his moment. He earned it.Also in this episode: rabies will ruin your week, your inner ear is held together by tiny crystals that can absolutely betray you, and the U.S. government once drew up serious plans to detonate a nuclear bomb on the moon. Carl Sagan did the math. They backed down. You are alive because of Carl Sagan. Pour one out.New episode. Certified chaos. Let's go.Cheers!m&t#MikeAndTonyShow #CompetitiveEating #JoeyChestnut #TunguskaEvent #BellWitch #WeirdHistory #TrueCrime #Paranormal #Podcast #NewEpisode #StrangeButTrue #PodcastLife

In Southern Indiana, a borrowed name takes on a life of its own. A “Bell Witch” isn't a single entity here—it's a label stapled to whatever refuses to die: a deer that shrugs off lead, a tunnel that remembers the dead, and a murdered watchman whose lantern still patrols the dark. This episode follows folklore as it migrates, mutates, and embeds itself into limestone, red brick, and railroad trauma—until all that's left is a green light in the distance… and your body's ancient decision to run.YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@HauntedAmericanHistory hauntedamericanhistory.com Patreon- https://www.patreon.com/hauntedamericanhistory LINKS FOR MY DEBUT NOVEL, THE FORGOTTEN BOROUGH Barnes and Noble - https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-forgotten-borough-christopher-feinstein/1148274794?ean=9798319693334 AMAZON: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FQPQD68S Ebook GOOGLE: https://play.google.com/store/books/details?id=S5WCEQAAQBAJ&pli=1 KOBO: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-forgotten-borough-2?sId=a10cf8af-5fbd-475e-97c4-76966ec87994&ssId=DX3jihH_5_2bUeP1xoje_ SMASHWORD: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/1853316 !! We're joined by astrologer Aliza Kelly for a very special episode and a full-on astrological investigation into one of America's most chilling legends: the Bell Witch. We revisit this infamous 1800s haunting, where the Bell family faced spectral scratching, whispered voices, bedcovers ripped away, and even a dog-bodied, rabbit-headed creature. The witch boldly quoted sermons, sang hymns, and—according to historical accounts—was responsible for the only documented case of a spirit killing someone. With Aliza's cosmic lens, we unravel astrological patterns that may explain the timing of the hauntings, the entity's vengeance, and the strange synchronicities woven through the Bell family's torment. The Bell Witch became one of America's most famous hauntings, but the truth behind the violent spirit that allegedly tormented a Tennessee family for years remains shrouded in mystery and debate.IN THIS EPISODE: The tale of the Bell Witch has gone on to become one of the most well known hauntings in American history and an iconic historical horror story, but of course it has left us to debate and speculate on whether any of it is true, and if so just what was the Bell Witch? (The Disturbing Case of the Bell Witch) *** The pentagram is most often seen in film and television as a symbol of Satan, or dark witchcraft – but that is not the reality of pentagram. The symbol has a much wider and richer history than what is portrayed in today's entertainment mediums. While the practices and beliefs of Wicca, gnostics, and druids use the pentagram in their practices, as do Satanists, the pentagram was (and sometimes still is) used by Christian believers as well – which I'm sure comes as quite a shock to those who don't know the full history behind this five pointed star. (The Paranormal Pentagram) *** I have told innumerable stories involving the death of someone, be it brutal, mysterious, or even darkly humorous. But it is high time I share a few stories of people who died… but then returned to the living. Not as ghosts, but as regular flesh-and-blood human beings who just happened to survive their own death. In this classic episode of The Grave Talks, we speak with Candy Wooten, Director of Operations at the Bell Witch Cave, who has witnessed the unexplainable firsthand. Long before horror movies or ghost-hunting shows, there was the Bell Witch — a real-life haunting so terrifying it became part of American folklore. In the early 1800s, the Bell family of Adams, Tennessee, were tormented by something unseen. It started with knocking on walls and grew into full-blown attacks — sheets ripped off, voices mocking them in the dark, and violent assaults on their daughter, Betsy. The spirit called itself Kate, but locals knew it as the Bell Witch. Even future president Andrew Jackson came to witness the haunting — and left convinced it was real. The witch claimed responsibility for John Bell's death… then promised to return every seven years — and again after a hundred. To this day, people near the Bell Witch Cave say they still hear whispers, see shadows, and feel the air turn cold around Halloween night. Was it a curse, a vengeful spirit, or something darker that still walks the land of Tennessee? #RealGhostStoriesOnline #BellWitch #HauntedTennessee #TrueGhostStory #AmericanHauntings #HalloweenSpecial #GhostStories #ParanormalPodcast #CursedGround #RealHaunting Love real ghost stories? In the 7th Annual Halloween episode of Rigor Mortis Paranormal, hosts Robert, David, Jasmine, Kory, and Ian dive into one of their most "action-packed" shows yet, featuring two chilling interviews and plenty of eerie conversation. Robert sits down with Eli from Ghost City Tours of San Antonio, who shares spine-tingling tales of haunted locations, UFO encounters, cryptid sightings, and even mummies! Plus insight into the colorful meanings behind ghost orbs. Then, Candy from Bell Witch Tours joins the show to recount the dark legacy of the infamous Bell Witch haunting, revealing the spirit's vengeful motives and her family's ongoing connection to the original property and cave. Between the interviews, the crew adds their trademark humor and personal stories including Ian's strange experience with a Frosted Mini Wheat; and teases new creative projects as they look back on their short horror film Mary Ann O'Neill, inspired by true events and reminiscent of The Black Phone. This Halloween special blends humor, history, and hauntings for an unforgettable night of paranormal storytelling.
A legend in Tennessee tells of the real-life Bell family, who were haunted back in 1817 by a ghost witch - arguably the worst kind of either of those things.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On the podcast, we have covered the Salem Witch Trials and other witch hunts in America and Europe. When we originally produced the Witches in America episode, we touched on a couple of the witch hunts that took place before the Salem outbreak, some Native American witches and then a couple of infamous witches, the River Witch of Marietta and the Bell Witch. We are still going to include some of that here, but the witch hunt material got a more thorough treatment in Episode 307, so we pulled that out. This Redux will explore some other witch narratives from America that we didn't cover before and update the material on the Bell Witch. Most of the people accused of witchcraft in the past, weren't actually witches, but that does not mean that there were not or are not really witches in America. Witchcraft has long been practiced in America and Wicca is an accepted religious practice in our modern era. Join us as we explore witches in America. Set in 1817 Adams, Tennessee, sinister events plagued the Bell family on their Red River farm. From sightings of bizarre creatures—like a dog with a rabbit's head—to violent knocks, whispers, and physical attacks by an entity claiming to be “Old Kate,” the Bell Witch terrorized the family, targeting patriarch John Bell Sr. and young Betsy. The episode explores the entity's malevolent powers, including shapeshifting, voice mimicry, and even a mysterious vial linked to John's death in 1820. But the mystery didn't end there as the enduring mystery of the Bell Witch Cave continues, a modern hotspot for paranormal activity, and debate theories ranging from a vengeful spirit to a poltergeist born of trauma. Join Gary & GoldieAnn as they venture Within the Mists of Tennessee to dive into the haunting legend of the Bell Witch, one of America's most infamous paranormal tales. Two hundred years ago, a quiet Tennessee farm became the center of one of America's most terrifying hauntings. The Bell family was stalked, tormented, and ultimately broken by a voice in the dark that claimed to want one thing, the death of their patriarch. What followed remains the only time in U.S. history that a ghost was blamed for murder. Just off the old Natchez Trace, in the quiet woods of Tennessee, stands a broken marble column marking the grave of Meriwether Lewis. The monument was meant to honor one of America's greatest explorers, but its shattered form also reflects a life cut short under circumstances that remain unsolved more than two centuries later. In 1804, Lewis and Clark led the Corps of Discovery across thousands of miles of uncharted wilderness. They mapped rivers, documented new species, and forged fragile relationships with Native Nations, returning home as national heroes. Yet only a few years later, while traveling east on government business, Lewis stopped at a frontier inn called Grinder's Stand. Before dawn, gunfire rang out. By morning, the celebrated explorer was dead. From the start, the explanation was contested. Some, including Thomas Jefferson and William Clark, believed Lewis had taken his own life after years of depression, financial trouble, and lingering illness. Others pointed to inconsistencies in the testimonies, the absence of eyewitnesses, and the violence of the scene to argue that he was murdered. Over the years, theories have ranged from robbery on a lawless road to political assassination, while modern scholars have even suggested his death may have been linked to malaria or another untreated disease. In this episode, we retrace Lewis's final journey along the Natchez Trace and examine the testimonies left behind. We look at the evidence for suicide, the motives for murder, and the generations of speculation that have kept this mystery alive. We also consider the more recent efforts by Lewis's descendants to exhume his body, hoping that modern science might finally answer the question that has haunted his legacy: how did Meriwether Lewis really die?
