Daniel D. Tompkins was born on June 21, 1774, in the town of Scarsdale in Westchester County, New York. He came into a world still under British rule, just two years before the colonies would declare their independence. His family roots traced back to England, where the name Tompkins derived from a form of “Little Thomas's son,” a patronymic surname that can be found as far back as the 1300s in Kent. The Tompkins family likely came to the American colonies in the mid-1600s during the great wave of English migration to the New World. His father, Jonathan Griffin Tompkins, born in 1729, was a well-respected local figure—a farmer, a judge, and a supporter of the patriot cause. He played a civic role in the Scarsdale community during and after the Revolutionary War. His mother, Sarah Ann Hyatt, came from the Hyatt family of New York. The Hyatts, like the Tompkins family, had early English roots, with possible Dutch ancestry in some branches, common in the Hudson River Valley. The Hyatt and Tompkins lines came together in a home that valued faith, education, and public service... I'm so excited to share this special 20 min episode stack as a highlight with a powerful message. I'm publishing this curation to help you make the most of your time. The episode features segments from the episode 017, 018, & 019 featuring Susan Cain and the following Aftercast & Solocast. https://richie.libsyn.com/susan-cain-quiet-the-power-of-introverts-in-a-world-that-cant-stop-talking ====== Introversion is not shyness. You can be a shy extrovert or an introvert who is not shy. "Don't think of introversion as something that needs to be cured." What about the Western Extroversion Ideal? The omnipresent belief that the ideal self is gregarious, alpha and comfortable in the spotlight” has pitfalls. What about extroverts who claim to be introverts? Discover the power of Quiet personally, professionally and in parenting. Erase from your vocabulary, "Now, I want to be someone else" and discover the power of quiet. Includes strategies for parents, children, teachers, in the office, at home and personally. What about introverted parenting? What if you have children with two kinds of children (introvert, extrovert)? How do you best parent them with the chill time or attention needed? Clue: Don't overprotect them, honor who they are. As Susan Cain says on this podcast, "Introverted kids have a longer runway that they have to travel before they take off and fly...you want to be with them on that runway...and they need to know from you that you really love who they are on that runway with them." Get ready to spend your time the way you like and not the way you think you're 'supposed to.' Stop denying your own reality of how you want to spend your time and step into your True North of what you'd like to be doing if you could. Richie Norton interviews Susan Cain author of the bestsellers Quiet Power: The Secret Strengths of Introverts, and Quiet: The Power of Introverts in A World That Can't Stop Talking, which has been translated into 40 languages, is in its seventh year on the New York Times best seller list, and was named the #1 best book of the year by Fast Company magazine, which also named Cain one of its Most Creative People in Business. Her record-smashing TED talk has been viewed over 30 million times on TED and YouTube combined, and was named by Bill Gates one of his all-time favorite talks. LinkedIn named Susan the 6th Top Influencer in the world. Susan has partnered with Malcolm Gladwell, Adam Grant and Dan Pink to launch the Next Big Idea Book Club; they donate all their proceeds to children's literacy programs. Her writing has appeared in the The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, and many other publications. Cain has also spoken at Microsoft, Google, the U.S. Treasury, the S.E.C., Harvard, Yale, West Point and the US Naval Academy. She received Harvard Law School's Celebration Award for Thought Leadership, the Toastmasters International Golden Gavel Award for Communication and Leadership, and was named one of the world's top 50 Leadership and Management Experts by Inc. Magazine. She is an honors graduate of Princeton and Harvard Law School. She lives in the Hudson River Valley with her husband and two sons. This powerful podcast will help you personally, professionally and in your relationships regardless of whether you lean introvert or extrovert. An instant classic in applicable learning for greater life improvement, happiness and productivity with quiet power. "Embrace the power of quiet." Newburgh is a small postindustrial city of some twenty-eight thousand people located sixty miles north of New York City in the Hudson River Valley. Like many other similarly sized cities across America, it has been beset with poverty and crime after decades of decline, with few opportunities for its predominantly minority residents. Sixty Miles Upriver: Gentrification and Race in a Small American City (Princeton UP, 2024) tells the story of how Newburgh started gentrifying, describing what happens when White creative professionals seek out racially diverse and working-class communities and revealing how gentrification is increasingly happening outside large city centers in places where it unfolds in new ways. As New York City's housing market becomes too expensive for even the middle class, many urbanites are bypassing the suburbs and moving to smaller cities like Newburgh, where housing is affordable and historic. Richard Ocejo takes readers into the lives of these newcomers, examining the different ways they navigate racial difference and inequality among Newburgh's much less privileged local residents, and showing how stakeholders in the city's revitalization reframe themselves and gentrification to cast the displacement they cause to minority groups in a positive light. An intimate exploration of the moral dilemma at the heart of gentrification, Sixty Miles Upriver explains how progressive White gentrifiers justify controversial urban changes as morally good, and how their actions carry profound and lasting consequences for vulnerable residents of color. For the U.S. to meet its clean energy goals by 2050, the Department of Energy projects that the country needs more than 10 million acres of solar development. Most of that is expected to be built in rural areas. Surveys show that the vast majority of Americans support renewable energy development, but projects planned in rural areas are meeting major resistance. Reveal's Jonathan Jones travels to Copake, New York, in the Hudson River Valley. It's the site of one of the most contentious fights over a proposed large-scale solar project in the United States. Jones looks at what's driving support and opposition to the project, Shepherd's Run. He starts with Bill and Nancy Rasweiler, the owners of land where the project is slated. For years, the Rasweilers have leased their land to local farmers to help offset the costs of maintaining it, but it's not enough. So they signed a lease with Chicago-based solar developer Hecate Energy. When they brought their plan to the rest of the town in 2017, they met resistance from other residents. During the same meeting, Copake's town board passed a new law to severely restrict the size of solar development. Jones finds that these kinds of local restrictions are being passed in rural communities across the country. Jones learns about the community concerns over the project: that it's too big, takes over prime farmland and negatively affects the environment and nearby homeowners. Residents who support the project say some concerns are a product of misinformation and Shepherd's Run is one of the many solar projects that has to happen to slow climate change. With the future of the project in question, Jones hears about a working group – a coalition of supporters and opponents of the project that came together to try to influence its design. Jones follows the group's efforts and how they landed with Hecate. Finally, Jones looks at ways agricultural communities are trying to make solar work on their land. This takes him to the Corn Belt, where he looks at how the U.S. is already using millions of acres of farmland to produce a less efficient clean energy source: ethanol. Jones also looks at a landmark agreement between the solar industry and environmental groups convened by Stanford University, which calls for advancing large-scale solar development while championing land conservation and local community interests. Some stories are just too big for one podcast. Some stories should be too big for one book. Sam Rebelein's Edenville is one such story. This 300-something page novel has more crammed into it than your average fantasy trilogy. There is backstory upon backstory, a cosmic framework, and enough different monsters to fill Guillermo del Toro's minibus. Yet somehow Sam corrals it all into a whimsical horror romp – a well-organised riot. We talk about ideas… about thinking them up, letting them evolve and, most crucially, getting them on paper. We talk narcissistic writers, the power of dreams, the unique eeriness of the Hudson River Valley and the questionable nature of curses. This conversation is a call to arms for writers. It's a weary acceptance that maybe, just maybe, sitting your arse in the chair is the most important thing you can do all day. Enjoy! The Architectural and Horticultural Endeavors of the Downing Brothers In the realm of landscape design and horticulture, few names are as revered as those of Andrew Jackson Downing and his brother, Charles Downing. Through their combined efforts, they have left a lasting imprint on the field, shaping not only the aesthetics but also the principles that govern landscape design and horticulture. Andrew Jackson Downing, born in 1815, was an iconic figure in 19th-century America, regarded as one of the founding fathers of landscape architecture. His visionary work combined aesthetics, functionality, and harmony with nature, aiming to create landscapes that were both beautiful and beneficial to the soul. He was an ardent advocate for the integration of parks and public green spaces in urban areas, emphasizing the profound impact such spaces could have on the well-being of the residents. Downing's contribution to landscape design and architecture is noteworthy. He was the author of seminal works like "A Treatise on the Theory and Practice of Landscape Gardening," which became a cornerstone for American landscape architecture. This book illustrated his innovative and holistic approach to design, which involved harmonizing architectural elements with the natural environment. His extensive research and writings on pomology have contributed immensely to the understanding and classification of various fruit varieties, including a myriad of apple species. Charles worked meticulously to catalog different apple varieties, contributing significantly to the field's growing body of knowledge. Charles' work in pomology complemented Andrew's landscape designs, merging form with function, aesthetics with agriculture. The duo often collaborated, creating designs that were not only visually appealing but also agriculturally productive, embodying a holistic approach to landscape architecture. Legacy Tragically, Andrew Jackson Downing's life was cut short in 1852 when he died in a steamboat accident on the Hudson River. Despite his untimely death at the age of 36, his ideas continued to shape American landscape architecture, influencing the design of renowned public spaces, including New York's Central Park. Charles Downing continued his work in pomology after his brother's passing, solidifying his reputation as a leading authority on fruit and helping to propagate a diverse array of fruit varieties across America. When the historic town of Hudson, New York, fell on hard times decades ago, it was design that came to its rescue. A few influential dealers opened shop, and were followed by designers, artists, and creatives. Now the town is a hotbed of fine dining, chic boutique hotels, and an ever-increasing number of design shops. And the entire Hudson River Valley is undergoing a renaissance. But can the town and the region maintain the momentum? Three lovers of the region—dealer Hannah Khachadourian, designer Nick Olsen, and interiors photographer William Abranowicz—discuss the role design played in this remarkable turnaround and how the area can sustain this success without losing its character. Undaunted and determined to complete the through hike, Marci and her trail buddies reconvened in June 2023 to complete those elusive miles and claim their PCT through hike crown. Marci shares her highs and lows from the challenge and why it was important to her to complete it. In the meanwhile, she teamed up again with Chris Stafford to take on another long trail bike ride—they completed the 450-mile Potomac Heritage Trail in 2022—this time it was the Empire State Trail. by Charles Lear, author of “The Flying Saucer Investigators.”Beginning on New Year's Eve, 1982, there was a series of sightings throughout the Hudson River Valley north of New York City by hundreds of people willing to go on the record. They reported seeing boomerang-shaped craft the size of 1, 2, and 3 football fields, that moved slowly, hovered, and turned on an axis. This is according to the first comprehensive book on the sightings, Night Siege, which was co-authored by J. Allen Hynek, Philip J. Imbrogno, and Bob Pratt, and published in 1987. One of the standout incidents in the book, covered in Chapter Eleven titled, “Close Encounter at Indian Point,” is a sighting by what are said by the authors to be security guards (they are all un-named) over the nuclear power plant on Indian Point, on the shore of the Hudson River in Buchanan, NY, just south of Peekskill, NY.
